ummm, no there’s not, except some goofy college expo game.

Just a week or so ago the Northern tier of states was reveling in temperatures like 30 below F. Wouldn’t a night game in that sort of weather be just the greatest thing that could ever happen in the history of sports!
Its like the dumbass World Series games all at night – the money is everything player (and fan in this weather) safety is an after thought at best. Just because tonights game is in a warmer place does not mean they always will be.
OTOH, I thought the games were both tomorrow
TaMara (BHF)
Broncos. Patriots. I’m always caught in the middle so I shall ignore the game tomorrow. So I made soup (finally wrote the recipe for the cream of chicken soup). My house smells wonderful.

I’ve got four ads showing for the reissue of The Beatles US albums, three of which were the first albums I ever owned, but all of them are bastardizations of the UK releases put together after US Capitol couldn’t ignore the band any longer. I hope that these CD reissues stiff big time (even though Beatles Second Album and Beatles 65 are great collections of their songs).
That’s what I get for coming here from AllMusic and Amazon…

In case you are lurking on this thread even though you don’t like sports but it’s the only open thread…
Just got back from seeing the film of the play, Frankenstein, starring Johnny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch.
INCREDIBLE.
If this pops up at an arts venue near you, it’s a must-see. Impeccable everything!

@WereBear: Which version did you get? Going to nab them both? And Ditto Ditto on the recommendation.

I see the NewsMax headline: “Ex-NSA’s Hayden: Obama Reverts to Pre-9/11 Policy”.
Dunno whether they consider this a positive or a negative. Wait a minute. This is Newsmax, and Michael Fucking Hayden. Those two observations remove all doubt.

Today, I did pretty much nothing. I think I’m feeling a little more down about my boss’s impending retirement than I thought, plus I’m slightly freaked out that Charlotte has to get an ultrasound of her heart to see if the vet can figure out why she has a persistent heart murmur (level 2).
MomSense
@TaMara (BHF):
Can’t wait to see that recipe! I made a split pea soup just like my grandma used to make. There is something so comforting about soup in the winter.
MomSense
@Mnemosyne:
Sorry to hear about Charlotte and your boss retiring. Keep us posted. Sending you a hug.
WereBear
@scav: Benedict Cumberbatch as the Creature, Johnny Lee Miller as Victor. The way they set it up, it was a vote with the ticket stubs thrown in a basket, and that version won by 2 tickets (me & my girlfriend! we joked.)
But interest was so high in the other one they are going to try to bring that it, and if so, I’ll definitely return. It would be wild to see the differences.
But it’s really the Creature’s play, methinks.

Anyone know anything about visiting Minneapolis?
I want to stay one night in a reasonably priced hotel, take the train, visit University of Minnesota, and see a few other sights or parts of town that would appeal to graduate student.
Oh, and a place for authentic Minneapolis food whatever that might be.
The Dangerman
For Super Bowl, I’ve got:
(1) Seahawks (from Washington)
(2) Broncos (from Colorado)
(3) Staggering quantities of Weed being smoked
ETA: Given SF’s proximity to Mendocino County, (3) probably works for a 49er win, too
Roger Moore
@RobertDSC-Power Mac G5 Dual:
Why? Can’t you sell the rehabilitated ones at a profit?
Omnes Omnibus
@jharp:
Anything with a white sauce.
ETA: And a white sauce on anything.

@WereBear: Oh definitely, the creature’s play. But they are subtly different creatures (and Doctors). I found even the dynamic between the two actors altered when they switched roles; they’re just different people, different presences on stage. Holding everything else as constant as possible really highlights how much impact that has. It’s astonishing to watch it work out, how much the play is a living relationship sparking between people — which can also be asked as a question with this as an experiment. Multiple levels of interest.
RobertDSC-Power Mac G5 Dual
@Roger Moore:
I tried selling one Mac and got no takers. My issue is that I see Macs and/or parts I could use for my current stable of machines. I use two Macs daily, have a third for storage as a server, and a fourth (the one I tried to sell) as a test bed of sorts. I wound up installing Mac OS 9 on it and it runs fine, if a bit loud.
The only Mac I have left to buy is an updated Intel one for this and the future. But that’s far off for a while. I’m still improving this G5 with more hard drives and memory. The old girl still works well and I’m happy to have made the improvements I have.

Define ‘reasonable’ when it comes to hotels. I can suggest a bunch of good places to eat but I don’t think there is anything I could call “Minnesota food” anymore.
If you are here on a Sunday Morning I can’t recommend Hells Kitchen for Breakfast (it was called that long before that asshole was on TV) the food is way above average and Sunday is Gospel day, they have very good performers, Saturday there is a performer also & is often very good entertainment.
WereBear
@scav: Dang, you’ve made me want to see the other version even more, and my interest was quite high already, you can imagine.

@jharp: Lutefisk? The only dish I know of that’s regularly eaten by humans that is made with lye.

Re The Beatles, I am planning to visit the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center one day next week to see the “Colors” exhibition, especially the installation that has something like 900 “White Album” covers, each in a different stage of yellowing, greying, or grubbiness. The other installations sound neat, too, but I really want to see the WA room.

@jharp: Dunno about reasonably priced hotels since I live here, but strictly on location, there is a Marriot Courtyard in the Seven Corners area. It’s right next to the UofM Minneapolis campus, two blocks away from the light rail, which will take you from the other end of downtown all the way to both the Mall of America and the airport. It’s also right on top of Town Hall Brewpub, the best brewpub in the cities and makes arguably one of the best IPA’s in the country. If you’re into that sort of thing… (solid food, too…)

Last year’s vinyl reissue was the Parlophone LPs, but hard-core audiophiles say they are underwhelming. I bought the 2009 stereo CD reissues of the Parlophone LPs, and they’re fine.
Last year’s reissue is almost certainly going to be the last that is based on the original studio tapes. Those are almost 50 years old, and some of them are said to be borderline unplayable.

@efgoldman:
Certainly one of the best series made. I’ll gently suggest not gorging but instead taking them in two- or three-episode bites to make them more cinematic in length. Let them sink in a bit before continuing.
At least you don’t endure the ten-minute action buildups leading to commercials (one of the harder things about watching network shows transferred to disk.)
The season arcs are well handled, as is the series-long arc. And don’t get too attached to too many of the characters (many of whom are among the best characters ever on the small screen).

I used to work with this old Norwegian guy who took a vacation to see distant relatives who lived in the old country. He asked them about Lutefisk & their reply was “Hell, we haven’t eaten that crap since we got refrigeration!”
Hells Kitchen does have a wild rice & hazelnut porridge for breakfast thats all local foods. Minnesota was founded by German and Scandinavian farmers, the food that were local tended to be simple farm foods from Northern Europe. Some of it was really good but its not in favor right now. Other, sexier, foods get more attention.

Since tater tot hotdish is a stereotypical idea of MN food I would say go to the Bulldog in North East Minneapolis (not any of the others) and get their deconstructed TTHD – the beef is braised in Youngs double chocolate stout and the tots are treated with truffle oil. FABULOUS!

The San Jose/Tampa Bay game this afternoon was a pretty good affair. There were two natural hat tricks, back to back, without intervening goals. The first was by St. Louis and the second by Pavelski. I doubt that has ever happened before in the history of the NHL.

@Omnes Omnibus:
I ate Lutefisk twice in my life, as a kid. The first was made by my grandmothers sister, she had about 75 years of experience. The fish was light and tender with no flavor other than the drawn butter. A couple years later I had it again but I forget who cooked it. The fish was a nasty sticky sludge that smelled faintly of ammonia.
I guess the trick and skill was to make it not cook into mush while removing any trace of flavor – not exactly a skill I’d bother learning myself.

One of the Twin Cities restaurants that I like is called A Taste Of Scandinavia. Lots of good choices there but you’d have to be willing to go out to Edina. Keys Restaurants are what you might call a Minnesota tradition (especially the one near University Avenue at Raymond in St. Paul), but it’s pretty traditional breakfast fare. I can’t really think of anyplace that would have ‘Minnesota’ food.
Anyone been to the Black Forest lately? Traditional German fare. If you’re feeling adventurous, go to Kramarczuk’s Deli which isn’t all that far from the U of M.

@jharp: Only know Minneapolis by passing through the airport, and there’s a restaurant I go out of my way for whenever there. Amazing good for being in an airport. It’s based on a traditional store that’s been in the city since the 1930s, so maybe that would count for you? Here’s the main place and looks like it has the same deli menu that they have at the airport:

Sadly both Kramarczuk’s and Black Forrest have gone down hill. If that is your plan there is a Hampton Inn a short walk from the Maul of America and the light rail station to downtown. Week nights its about $120/night. We actually stayed there one night when we moved to MN from Florida, it was clean and quiet which are two of the most important things to me.
If thats your price range I can see what else I can find – you want along the light rail / downtown?

Just had breakfast at Modern this morning. It was OK, I had scrambled eggs with cream cheese, bacon green onions and mushrooms. It was cooked perfectly (eggs slightly runny). OMG margarine! That white lard-like stuff that you had to mix with the bright orange powder so it would look yellowish, like butter. The technological improvement when the orange dye came in a little capsule and you just broke it and then squeezed and massaged the plastic bag for about 20 minutes until the colour was reasonably well distributed (my “butter” was always kind of streaky).
Disgusting. I guess the real thing was too costly for our family. Apart from the farm where I spent some of my childhood summers, and inter alia learned to churn, I don’t think I had proper butter until I was in my 20s.
Omnes Omnibus
@SiubhanDuinne: Oddly, the color packet description does tend to be a part of the story.

We should compare notes sometime,, we hardly ever get to St. Paul to eat unless it is the Hockey tourny & then its Cossetta’s (despite their screwing the city & their employees with the rebuild). We get to Babani’s once in a great while (first Kurdish restaurant in the US) and a couple of places over on Snelling north of University. I bet there are other good paces but there are so many good ones on this side of the river & so many new ones we need to try that we never drive that far. The Cajun Potluck up in SHoreview has good food. Its a different menu each day of the week with Friday’s being our favorite but the drive from here to Shoreview around diner time is ugly so we do’t go as often as we would like.

For years it was illegal to sell colored oleo in Minnesota, it all came with that orange pill. My dads family was from Wisconsin though & it was legal there (despite WI supposedly being a dairy state). We always had yellow margarine when I was growing up. Butter was for very special occasions!

JPL
@Aji: He really is. From the pictures, he seems docile but I can imagine that is not what it seems. I can’t wait for the updates.

That’s the crux of my issue. I would love to say yes. I would enjoy taking them apart and building something out of them. But I already have one “surplus” Mac and three more would become an issue, lol.
I will say this: for the past two years or so after I’ve begun to learn how to fix these Macs, it has been a very fun ride. I’ve built several Macs for my stable through patient combing through Craigslist, eBay, and Google searches. I’m very happy with what I’ve built.
I happen to deal with the IT folks in my company on a regular basis and in the course of my duties, I see the machines they build and their work areas. I get a little jealous at what they have, lol.

Shamrocks is a good burger bar thats for sure. Our daughter went to school and played hockey with a Mancini (grandkid of the owner) They are a very good steak place but I can’t eat steak now so we never go there. Glockenspiel has decent German food but the real reason to go is that they have real, actual, German beer on tap. The other places I know of are like Tom Rieds, there only to get Wild fans drunk before games. Do you know of other good food on that street?
BTW – 7th St. Hardware is closing, I expect food to show up on that corner but am afraid it will be more “Miller lite by the bucket to prep for Wild, oh, and some reheated frozen crap”
Yatsuno
@Aji: You might have to accept that he might not be breakable. Of course I’ve been wrong before since breaking is just them getting used to a weight on their back. But the walk was very hopeful. And you both are lovely. :)
Aji
@Yatsuno: Thanks, sweetie. :-)
Actually, based on his natural movements, I think he’ll do really well, once we get over certain hurdles. He has the most beautiful gait I’ve ever seen in a non-gait horse, much less a half-wild one, and he clearly loves it. He’s also pretty eager to please, and wants to trust. He’s just got a lot to overcome.
I was just talking to someone elsewhere about this, and as with Miskwaki, we recognize something in each other. Nothing pleasant, but it means we understand a bit about what the other’s had to go through.
Yatsuno
@Aji: This story has not yet concluded, but the final act will be a lovely end to a long saga. I’m just glad you’re including us along for the ride.
jharp
@Schlemizel:
Yes. I want to be on the light rail line.
I am trying to sell my daughter on Minneapolis. And the train thing is something new to her. I for sure want her to check it out.
Aji
@Yatsuno: You’re very welcome, hon. The only thing we really care about is that ultimately, he’s healthy and happy, and that he gets to stay.
Yatsuno
@Aji: I would think if his owners were that concerned that they would have turned up already. Sounds as if he had been faring for himself for quite awhile. Of course if he’s been gelded then he was possessed by a human at some point. If he’s intact, then only he knows his history. You’re in for quite the wild ride with this one I’m thinking. Savour every last second of it. And please keep sharing!
Schlemizel
@jharp:
I’m not sure now is the right time of year to sell someone on Minnesota ;)
depending what you want there is a Country Inns and a Homewood both right next to the Maul of America that would be in the 90-120 price range. The Hampton Inn is 2-3 blocks away (its actually closer to cut across a parking lot to the next station instead but I am not sure about walkability around there.
If you want to be downtown there is a TownePlace by Target field for about $20 more. That puts you in the warehouse district which is young & hep & near to the trendy ‘north loop’ which is cool but also is the site of a lot of bars & clubs that have a certain amount of trouble in the wee hours of Saturday.
If you are going to have a car & just want to experiment with rail you could move out from those two ends. The train runs up Hiawatha which is a mixed bag. Trendy areas with nice places & restaurants etc & poor neighborhoods.
Maybe we could exchange phone #s via one of the FPers if you want to talk more about it in detail.
Aji
@Yatsuno: Miskwaki’s owner took four months, despite knowing exactly where he was (and despite being related to Wings). And that was only because there was a particular reason, shall we say (and because we’d invested in getting the horse, you know, healed and road-worthy).
So I won’t be at all surprise if something similar happens here. As Mnem put it to me a few hours ago, we may just have to ransom this one, too.

some years ago, in minneapolis, or eden prairie as it was, i went into a small deli to get a sandwich.

the lady at the counter took my order and then remarked “I noticed that you have an accent, where are you from?”
and i replied, “just east of Savannah and I don’t have an accent but everyone i’ve talked to here certainly does.”
she didn’t think that was too amusing.

Yatsuno
@Aji: To hell with ransom. You’re investing in his development and well-being now, that horse becomes yours unless the owner can compensate you for that time and effort. And HAY! That stuff ain’t exactly cheap you know.
Neighbours are raising nine horses and didn’t stock enough hay for the winter. At first my parents were generous and gave them some (my mom would NEVER let a horse starve) but now they’re paying for it, as it’s cutting into the winter supply here as well. I don’t know if they’re replacing it, or even if they can. It’s just a bad situation all around. They’re thinking of getting the authorities involved if it continues.
Aji
@Yatsuno: Oog. BT;DT. So sorry they’re dealing with it now.
[Sigh] we have a “horse neighbor issue,” too. It may wind up becoming a big problem locally; dunno yet. This year, though, we’re not in a position to help anyone with hay. Climate change has so screwed up our growing cycle that we only got two small cuts of grass hay this time (normally we get three good-sized ones; the rest is high-grade alfalfa). Cree is foundered, so she can have alfalfa only occasionally ad in small doses. Occasionally, harmony and Miskwaki have to be limited to grass, too. We’d shot through all of this year’s grass hay well before the end of the year, and we’re now on our second half-ton that we had to buy from someone else. That’s vanishingly rare for us, but I’m afraid it won’t be anymore.
The climate change thing, coupled with the drought conditions we already have – as things stand, we’re on track to have the worst year in recent memory for 2014, and while a lot of local folks don’t get it, we’ve been mired in a massive drought for two decades now – make me truly afraid for what this year’s going to bring in terms of food, both for the horses and for us.
