Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We still have time to mess this up!

Too inconsequential to be sued

Verified, but limited!

Not all heroes wear capes.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

Forty-two’ said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.

Good luck with your asparagus.

It’s a tarp!

We have all the best words.

This blog is Obama’s Katrina.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

The revolution will be supervised.

Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack!

This is a big f—–g deal.

Shock troops for the Unitarian Jihad.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity.

Naturally gregarious and alpha

Islam, The Thinking Religion

by John Cole|  February 4, 200312:15 am| 4 Comments

This post is in: Outrage

After the Columbia disaster, I asked this question:

How long before the lunatic fringe is pointing out that this is a sign from God, as the crew with the first Israeli astronaut died over Palestine, Texas?

There are numerous examples all over the place, but this one is the most fitting what I thought would come from the real morons with an ax to grind:

THERE were renewed calls for the deportation of Abu Hamza al-Masri yesterday after he said that Allah had destroyed the shuttle because it was a

More on Ed Rosenthal

by John Cole|  February 4, 200312:07 am| 1 Comment

This post is in: The War on Your Neighbor, aka the War on Drugs

Reader Ellen Roberts points out this link to the jury reaction in the Rosenthal conviction:

Jurors who convicted marijuana guru Ed Rosenthal of cultivation and other drug charges said Monday they would have acquitted him had they been told he was growing medical marijuana for the city of Oakland.

“I feel like I made the biggest mistake in my life,” said juror Marney Craig, a 58-year-old Novato property manager. “We convicted a man who is not a criminal. We unfortunately had no idea of who he was or what he did.”

Other jurors reached by The Associated Press agreed. They plan an unusual gesture: writing Rosenthal to apologize.

Rosenthal, 58, the self-described “Guru of Ganja,” faces up to an 85-year prison term when sentenced June 4. Prosecutors on Tuesday are scheduled to ask U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer to revoke Rosenthal’s bail.

After a two-week trial Friday, a 12-member federal jury unanimously concluded that Rosenthal, a world-renowned marijuana advocate, was growing more than 100 plants, conspired to cultivate marijuana and maintained an Oakland warehouse for a growing operation. He was painted as a major drug manufacturer and put on little, if any, defense.

The jury was not told that Rosenthal was acting as an agent of the city of Oakland’s medical marijuana program, which was an outgrowth of a 1996 medical marijuana initiative approved by California’s voters.

Disgusting. This just gets tiresome after a while. I wish people would get their act together and realize that the Patriot Act they areso hysterical about is nothing compared to what the War on Drugs has done to our civil liberties.

Go read the whole story.

Talkleft points to another disgraceful turn of events in the war on your neighbors:

We are very saddened tonight by the news of the conviction of author and medical marijuana activist Ed Rosenthal in San Francisco. He will be sentenced Tuesday to a mandatory minimum ten year sentence. The maximum sentence is life.

Dumb as a Sack of Hammers

Nelson Mandela speaks his mind:

Former South African president Nelson Mandela has slammed the U.S. stance on Iraq, saying that “one power with a president who has no foresight, who cannot think properly, is now wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust.”

Speaking at the International Women’s Forum, Mandela said “if there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America.”

Mandela said U.S. President George W. Bush covets the oil in Iraq “because Iraq produces 64 percent of the oil in the world. What Bush wants is to get hold of that oil.” In fact Iraq contributes to only 5 percent of world oil exports.

Not content to be merely stupid, Mandela wades into some race-baiting:

Receiving applause for his comments, Mandela said Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair are “undermining” past work of the United Nations.

“They do not care. Is it because the secretary-general of the United Nations is now a black man?” said Mandela, referring to Kofi Annan, who is from Ghana.

Yawn.

TAPPED needs a Mirror

From Tapped:

Outrage is, of course, the stock-in-trade of your average conservative journalist on campus — their own outrage at everything, and their wish to outrage everyone else. How tedious.

They should read their own site and then check their links list if they want a lesson in continuous and ridiculous outrage. This from the people who linked to this bile. When not writing about the SOTU, Mr. Ehrenstein has enlightened thoughts about race:

“On Friday, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said that while race-neutral practices are “preferable,” race can be used as “one factor among others” to achieve the goal of racial diversity on campus.”

Then she put the handkerchief back on her head and proceeded to brush-scrub the White House floors. But seriously folks —

“In the briefs, the Bush administration did not address the question of whether race could ever be considered a factor in making admissions decisions.”

Meaning that it’s considered a factor.

One must either be white or turn on one’s own race in slavish support of whites.

Deep thinking from the fringe.

Freedom From Criticism

Mean Mr. Mustard explains a thing or two to Susan Sarandon:

Once again, all together now, so all of Hollywood can hear: Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from criticism. You can talk all you want to Susan, but keep in mind, your continued offering of pathetic little platitudes that equate the deliberate killing of thousands of innocents with the careful efforts to hunt down and destroy their killers will likely mean getting branded with words a lot worse than “anti-American.”

“Brain-dead twit,” comes to mind, for example.
