Don’t Be Shellfish, Pass the Puffer On The Left Hand Side

It’s a little quiet here today. But it’s a happy quiet. Doing my best to keep Scout from being her crazy-ass self while she recovers from her spay.

What’s everyone up to tonight?

Also – apropos of nothing, I need a list of popular romantic movies – what are some of your favorites?

Open Thread: Meet Baby

It’s been a whirlwind 24 hours. A friend of a friend found this Great Dane wandering around her neighborhood yesterday afternoon. It’s been in the minus degrees for the past two nights. He’s completely emaciated, with lots of sores on his legs and hips.  I doubt he would have made it another night if she hadn’t found him.

A mad scramble to see if he was chipped and to find him a foster home instead of the shelter and he ended up with me.

He’ll be here until he’s healed up and put on some weight.  I’m going to tell you, whoever had him, had him in a crate that was too small and he was in the crate for too long.  I have put the more disturbing photos below the fold.  Read more

Super Bowl Sunday Pre-Game Open Thread

I’m assuming someone will hop in later with a super bowl thread.  Until then, here’s a pre-game thread. I’m recording the kitten bowl because Scout is fascinated with the commercials. Meanwhile, cooking and cleaning is how my day is going. Just made a big batch of puppy training treats.

Sundays are generally politics free for me.

Open Thread and Helping Out Jacy

This is just one example of jacy’s amazing artwork. And one of my favorites.

Friend and fellow jackal jacy, as many of you know, has battled cancer and other health issues. She’s run into a bit of a problem and has set out a plan to get herself back on her feet.

Once she has it organized, she’ll be doing an art sale, which John or Betty will front page under our Artists In Our Midst series. She can do custom pet pictures…I’ve seen some of her samples and they are beautiful -, plus she has some beautiful things ready to go. ETA: Link to her Etsy page

If you are an author and need a book cover, I can highly recommend her. You can see samples here.  I’ve worked with her on my covers and she’s a breeze to work with, very intuitive

And finally, she has set up a GoFundMe, to help her get caught up.

Since having chemotherapy for ovarian cancer, I’ve had cognitive difficulties. It’s been very hard, because I run my own business and care for my children and my elderly mother alone.  Over the past year there was an increase in my problems with fatigue, memory, and organization.  An undiagnosed thyroid condition made things worse.  I’ve been working hard with doctors and therapists to adjust to the problems with my brain and have developed strategies to make up for those deficits and I have new medication regimens. But while I was getting increasingly sicker I couldn’t take care of everything — including medical expenses and fighting for custody of my youngest child —  and I  got behind on bills.

Most of all, I think she can use some kind words of support.

Open Thread: A Few Words Of Inspiration

(Don’t judge me, but I have a stockpile of Obama & Family photos I saved over the years)

In my effort to find more positive thoughts while taking a week for myself, a friend posted this for me and I found it helpful. It’s David Brooks, so I’m sorry for that – I couldn’t get through the remainder of the article because, well, Brooks. This was 2007 (emphasis mine):

Out of the blue I asked, “Have you ever read Reinhold Niebuhr?”

Obama’s tone changed. “I love him. He’s one of my favorite philosophers.”

So I asked, What do you take away from him?

“I take away,” Obama answered in a rush of words, “the compelling idea that there’s serious evil in the world, and hardship and pain. And we should be humble and modest in our belief we can eliminate those things. But we shouldn’t use that as an excuse for cynicism and inaction. I take away … the sense we have to make these efforts knowing they are hard, and not swinging from naïve idealism to bitter realism.”

So for today, I’ll stay away from cynicism.
