Steve M has a good piece on the hurt feelings excuse that Karen Susan Collins and the rest of the “moderates” (God I hate that word in this context) are going to use for a reason not to call witnesses. Two things:

First, we all have little clichés or old saws that we use to explain human behavior. In this case, I’m going to go with either “Never teach a pig to sing, it wastes your time and it annoys the pig” or “How many psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb? One, but they have to want to change”.

These pigs don’t want to change, and they’re pissed that Schiff, Nadler and the rest are pointing it out while they have to sit quietly and listen.

Second, you often hear people remark that, for a group that uses the expression “fuck your feelings” a lot, these people sure are delicate. That’s true, but there’s a little more to it than simply hypocrisy. It’s a result of the very effective, 30+ year project of “othering” by the conservative media. Long before Fox News, Limbaugh and others worked to make “liberal” an epithet to describe someone who is lesser than the person using the term. These fuckers couldn’t use racial epithets in public anymore, so they found a better one – it doesn’t matter what color you are, or where you came from, if you’re a god damned liberal, then fuck your feelings. But if you’re a conservative, please tread carefully, because you’re dealing with a legitimate human being who is easily damaged by lack of respect.

It would be bad enough if this attitude had been embraced by a third of the population or more, but it’s also been accepted by the mainstream media. There are hundreds of examples of this behavior, but here’s one: how many stories have been written in outlets like the Times that contain concerns that a given Senator or Congressperson is “too right wing”? Find me one, I’m sure they’re rare. That’s because these people are legitimate members of the establishment “Freedom Caucus”, and as such, they have a certain set of deeply held legitimate beliefs. But the same media outlets will shit themselves if they don’t crank out a story about Warren, AOC, Ilhan, etc. that doesn’t contain handwringing about whether any of those women are “too liberal”.

I guess this is all bloody obvious to most of us, but it’s the coronavirus of the mind that is going to kill this country.

Here’s the end of Rep. Schiff’s brilliant closing remarks from last night’s impeachment trial:

At around the same time Schiff was reminding senators of their duty to protect this nation, Donald Trump pinned this bizarre, nonsensical picture to the top of his Twitter feed:

Our politics are cynical and debased and vicious and stupid. Otherwise, a crude, petty, demented crook like Trump would not be president. But as awful as things are, Americans like Adam Schiff are still rising to the occasion. As long as they do, there’s hope for better days.

Schiff’s entire 8-minute summary is here and well worth a listen if you missed it last night.

PS: Don’t forget to call your senators, especially if they’re Republicans: (202) 224-3121.

Tough on the Seniors

I get why Moscow Mitch is cramming the impeachment into a couple of days – it has to be done before the SOTU so Trump can declare victory from the podium. But my God what a toll that’s going to take on the older Senators. When Collins complained to the manager about her order, sent a note to Roberts to complain about Jerry Nadler, it was after midnight, for christsake. That’s way too late for the over-80 crew ( Shelby, Feinstein, Grassley, Roberts, and Inhofe) and probably pretty damn late for the over-75ers (a bunch of them).

My experience with people in their mid-80s is that they sleep a lot, and they need their sleep to get through the day. And these were relatively healthy 80-somethings, “relatively healthy” being a stretch for a few of these Senators.

Look, I’m not pissing on these people for being old. Aging sucks, I fucking hate it, and we’ll all suffer through it, if we’re lucky. We can have an argument about whether these guys should all have retired some other time. But from just a simple human perspective, we’re risking the lives of a bunch of people just to ram this thing through the Senate.

Lobbest thou thy human hand grenade in the direction of thine foe…

Here’s the stuff I’ve looked forward to the most: House Manager Schiff rubbing the assembled Republican senators’ noses in Trump and Giuliani’s Ukraine/DNC/Soros crackpottery:

Schiff: "Rudy Giuliani is not some Svengali here, who has the president under his control…And if [Trump] is willing to listen to his personal lawyer over his own intelligence agencies, his own advisers, then you can imagine what a danger that presents." https://t.co/7CO9n4TTiG pic.twitter.com/aqIdAdC5EB

— ABC News (@ABC) January 23, 2020

I think Trump sincerely believes this bullshit since he’s dumb and aggrieved and he admires Putin. The Ukraine conspiracy theory is therefore irresistible since it suggests that Trump did TOO win fair and square without a boost from Putin and conveniently exculpates the latter so maybe they can hang out and swap tales of crushing underlings and bond over their shared impulse to aggressively bend scowling women to their iron will or whatever.

Giuliani may be a believer too, or perhaps he merely sensed the massive opportunities for graft in the Ukraine shakedown scheme. Regardless, most Senate Republicans know it’s all a load of bullshit. So the least they can do is sit there and squirm through every agonizing and embarrassing account of how Russia-driven propaganda informs U.S. foreign policy thanks to their party’s idiot president.

Lawyer lawsuits and other horseshit

If you were puzzled by Trump impeachment lawyer Jay Sekulow’s odd rant about “lawyer lawsuits” yesterday, you’re not alone. Turns out he misunderstood Rep. Val Demings’ reference to “FOIA lawsuits” and wasted several minutes of the Senate’s time on a moronic non-issue:

Here’s Jay Sekulow getting angry over “lawyer lawsuits” — a bizarre reference the Post ascribed to Sekulow mishearing Rep. Demings’s comment about “FOIA lawsuits.” (The White House later doubled down on Seklow’s mistake!) https://t.co/M29fEIe3XC pic.twitter.com/n84eEPnxyx

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) January 22, 2020

The Post has a story about it here: An embarrassing moment for Trump’s legal team.

Appearing shortly after 6 p.m. on the Senate floor, Trump’s longtime personal lawyer Jay Sekulow offered an indignant rebuke of the Democrats’ impeachment managers. What he was so incensed about: that they had allegedly referred to “lawyer lawsuits” in prosecuting the case against Trump.

“And by the way — lawyer lawsuits?” Sekulow began. “Lawyer lawsuits? We’re talking about the impeachment of a president of the United States, duly elected, and the members — the managers are complaining about lawyer lawsuits? The Constitution allows lawyer lawsuits. It’s disrespecting the Constitution of the United States to even say that in this chamber — lawyer lawsuits…”

What’s even more remarkable about the flap is that the White House actually stood by Sekulow’s allegation. Asked about the remark by reporters later in the night, White House legislative affairs director Eric Ueland reportedly walked away, only to return a while later — apparently after checking? — and suggest that Sekulow had not erred.

Make a monumentally dumb error, then double down on it. How on brand is that for Team Trump?

Also, a reminder: Sekulow is a grifter who parts wingnut evangelical fools from their money via a fraudulent nonprofit. Again, SO on brand!

*****

Switching gears, Joe Biden’s campaign just released another video. It’s a long one featuring Andrew Bates, the campaign’s rapid response director — just a regular guy having a beer while explaining why Trump’s corruption accusation against Biden is self-serving horseshit. The words “horseshit” and “bullshit” are used, amplifying the regular guy down at the pub vibe…

[Points off for the green grocer apostrophes laid over Trump’s “yelicopter” dialogue at the 3:16 mark.]

I think Biden’s campaign ads thus far have been pretty good. This one isn’t up to their usual standard, IMO, but it’s not an ad they’re going to run on TV. They want to get the facts about Biden’s activities in Ukraine out in a relatively succinct package for people to share on Facebook, etc. It’ll probably work just fine for that. Open thread.

Call your senators!

by Betty Cracker|  January 21, 202011:46 am| 60 Comments

This post is in: Impeach the Motherfucker!, Impeachment Hearings, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

It’s not much, but there is something you can do about the Republicans’ scheme to hold a fake impeachment trial with no witnesses and no documents: you can call your senators and tell them that you (along with nearly 70% of Americans, according to a CNN poll that came out yesterday) want a real trial with witnesses and documents.

202-224-3121

That’s the Capitol switchboard number. It’s easier to Google your senators and call them directly. I left messages for the craven shitstains Marco Rubio and Rick Scott. Only takes a few seconds.

It’s easy to feel hopeless about this whole thing, but I don’t think we should. Republicans control the trial, so of course they’re going to rig it, and there’s a 99.9% chance they’ll acquit Trump. (I say 99.9% rather than 100% because it’s possible that Trump will poop in his pants during a Davos presser today, strip to the waist and try to draw the 2016 Electoral College map on the wall, using his own turds as a Sharpie.)

But even so, his ass is impeached! And a majority of the country wants him removed! That’s a big fucking deal! It’s also 100% obvious that the Republicans in Congress are propping up Trump’s unpopular, criminal ass, which is helpful to our cause in 2020.

So, call your damned senators. It’ll make you feel better, even if they are a pair of corrupt toadies like mine.
