Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Deploy the moving finger of emphasisity!

This is all too absurd to be reality, right?

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Tick tock motherfuckers! Tick fucking tock!

I really should read my own blog.

North Korea Replies

by Cheryl Rofer|  May 23, 20188:32 pm| 113 Comments

This post is in: Dolt 45, Foreign Affairs, All we want is life beyond the thunderdome, Assholes, Bring On The Meteor

I said before the weekend, I think in a comment, that I expected North Korea to respond to Trump’s threat of nuclear war over the weekend. I was off by a few days.

Another all-tweet post, sorry. There should be a more readable form of the statement in a bit.

KCNA: "Choe Son Hui, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of the DPRK, issued the following press statement on Thursday: At an interview with Fox News on May 21, the U.S. Vice-President Pence has made unbridled and impudent remarks that north Korea might end like Libya…and so on."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

KCNA: "As a person involved in the U.S. affairs, I cannot suppress my surprise at such ignorant and stupid remarks gushing out from the mouth of the U.S. vice-president."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

KCNA: "If he is vice-president of 'single superpower' as is in name, it will be proper for him to know even a little bit about the current state of global affairs and to sense to a certain degree the trends in dialogue and the climate of detente."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

KCNA: "We could surmise more than enough what a political dummy he is as he is trying to compare the DPRK, a nuclear weapon state, to Libya that had simply installed a few items of equipment and fiddled around with them."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

KCNA: "Soon after the White House National Security Adviser Bolton made the reckless remarks, Vice-President Pence has again spat out nonsense that the DPRK would follow in Libya's footstep."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

KCNA: "In view of the remarks of the U.S. high-ranking politicians who have not yet woken up to this stark reality and compare the DPRK to Libya that met a tragic fate, I come to think that they know too little about us."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

KCNA: "To borrow their words, we can also make the U.S. taste an appalling tragedy it has neither experienced nor even imagined up to now."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

KCNA: "It is the U.S. who has asked for dialogue, but now it is misleading the public opinion as if we have invited them to sit with us. I only wonder what is the ulterior motive behind its move and what is it the U.S. has calculated to gain from that."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

KCNA: "We will neither beg the U.S. for dialogue nor take the trouble to persuade them if they do not want to sit together with us. Whether the U.S. will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision…of the U.S."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

KCNA: "In case the U.S. offends against our goodwill and clings to unlawful and outrageous acts, I will put forward a suggestion to our supreme leadership for reconsidering the DPRK-U.S. summit."

— Jonathan Cheng (@JChengWSJ) May 24, 2018

Here's the transcript of the Fox News interview that Mike Pence gave earlier this week that the N. Koreans were displeased by. "This will only end like the Libya Model ended if Kim Jong-un doesn't make a deal."https://t.co/dL9kbN8dQu

Trump Crime Cartel Open Thread: GIMME!

by Anne Laurie|  May 23, 20186:40 pm| 179 Comments

“It was sort of like a gift,” Giuliani said of stolen emails that Trump campaign officials solicited publicly and privately, retaining his title as America’s worst lawyer. https://t.co/5XpmpKS5SL

— Brian Beutler (@brianbeutler) May 22, 2018

The FBI probe into my client’s collusion is a partisan witch hunt, and besides so what that he did it, who cares??

— Jeff Matson (@JeffMatsonRV) May 23, 2018

The narcissist assumes the thing they can’t have must be really valuable – or the enemy wouldn’t keep it from them.

Narcissists truly can’t process that sometimes the other person’s reasons have nothing to do with them…

2/

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) May 22, 2018

We’re seeing this phenomenon play out right now with Trump and the FBI/DOJ.

Trump compulsively assumes any info they won’t give him MUST be valuable and helpful to him… and is only being held back to hurt him.

4/

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) May 22, 2018

Trump truly cannot process that the info the FBI is holding back might actually HURT him.

He is incapable of processing that the FBI might just be shielding a witness’ identity – because that reason doesn’t revolve around Trump.

It HAS to be about him. Who else exists?

5/

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) May 22, 2018

That’s the basic setup for the Trump-DOJ/FBI showdown we’re watching play out.

The info Trump wants will actually be damaging. It will deepen his problems.

In his primitive, toddler mind, anything an enemy won’t give him must be super valuable though.

That was the most deplorable thing my late school-teacher mother could say about anyone…

Trump’s tweets include grammatical errors. And some are done by aides on purpose, who relish the scoldings from elites and believe debates over presidential typos fortify the belief within his base that he has the common touch. Via @AnnieLinskey: https://t.co/vW5JT1skc7

Another Portion of the Swamp Drained

by John Cole|  May 22, 20186:29 pm| 65 Comments

This post is in: Dolt 45

But not by Trump:

A significant business partner of Michael D. Cohen, President Trump’s personal lawyer, has quietly agreed to cooperate with the government as a potential witness, a development that could be used as leverage to pressure Mr. Cohen to work with the special counsel examining Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Under the agreement, the partner, Evgeny A. Freidman, a Russian immigrant who is known as the Taxi King, will avoid jail time, and will assist government prosecutors in state or federal investigations, according to a person briefed on the matter.

Repub Venality Open Thread: Go Away, Smarmy Dubya Minion

I trust Mueller to pursue the truth, but his hirings create the appearance of bias:

82% of his lawyers are Ds. 71% of them have contributed money to D candidates/causes.

Mueller’s lawyers donated $80,257. Ds got 77,507 (97%) while Rs got $2,750 (3%). https://t.co/w8OF570wGv

— Ari Fleischer (@AriFleischer) May 19, 2018

KellyAnne Conway’s husband (a lawyer) rebuts…

Nope. His hirings show that he hired lawyers. And lawyers overwhelmingly tend, especially in the elite ranks, to be liberal Democrats. https://t.co/Oh8Ys1ynQO

— George Conway (@gtconway3d) May 19, 2018

The more highly educated people are, the more they — on average — trend towards a little left of American center – square in the middle of the “liberalism” box on the political map (right of center on that).

— Bad Horse (@BadHorseOC) May 19, 2018

If you knew anything about DOJ, you’d know prosecutors check our politics at the door. A foreign concept for you I realize, Ari, but it’s a principle that is imprinted in our DNA.

— Dwight Holton (@RogueDew) May 19, 2018

Little toad refuses to quit, comes back for another round…

Per the Constitution, Congress will decide if impeachment is in order. Mueller’s report will be their basis.

To have more credibility, Mueller’s staff should have consisted entirely of non-donors so no one could question their partisanship. Party balance should have been equal.

— Ari Fleischer (@AriFleischer) May 19, 2018

That would have been a violation of DOJ rules, which forbid considering political affiliation in hiring for career positions. https://t.co/vRn4Nzr74a

— Julian Sanchez (@normative) May 19, 2018

“Let me engage in a grubby and dishonest attack against Mueller to discredit his investigation so I can remain loyal to my political tribe, but I’ll start off by saying that I trust Mueller so I can maintain the appearance of not being a partisan” https://t.co/rbcvP2VTll

I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes – and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!

TRUMP: "They're not even people. They're animals."

TRUMP SUPPORTERS: "Calm down, he was only talking about criminals."

TRUMP'S SON, ERIC: "Actually DEMOCRATS aren't even people." https://t.co/y8OwhHnpk2

— Mikel Jollett (@Mikel_Jollett) May 18, 2018

When I first posted about Trump’s latest hate-rally, I assumed “They’re not even people, they’re animals” would get lost in the non-stop blizzard of Trumpian malfeasance. Kinda pleased (as far as I can be as a devout Cynic) to have been wrong about that…

"Don't normalize" turned into something of a sneering punchline for media cool kids.

Normalization is when the President of the United States calls Hispanic immigrants "animals" and media cool kids make it a half-day story at most.

— Oliver Griswold (@originalgriz) May 17, 2018

While continuing to excoriate liberals for being mean to the people who voted for the guy who campaigned explicitly on that idea. https://t.co/wpvCbHdJdn

— Greg Sargent (@ThePlumLineGS) May 17, 2018

It's reasonable to want Trump's "animals" comment to be presented in context. It's unreasonable — in fact, dishonest — to suggest that context is limited to the thirty seconds before he made it. The full context is Trump.

— Popehat (@Popehat) May 17, 2018

Thank you @Lawrence for recognizing that regarding Black men as less than human made lynching possible. When we decide that other human beings are “animals”, “savages,” – you can do anything to them.

— Sherrilyn Ifill (@Sifill_LDF) May 18, 2018

Obama: "These people cling to guns and religion."
GOP: OBAMA HATES WHITE PEOPLE

Hillary: "Nazis and racists are deplorable."
GOP: HILLARY HATES WHITE PEOPLE

Trump: "Immigrants coming into our country are animals."
GOP: Well, you have to look at the proper context

— Denizcan James (@MrFilmkritik) May 17, 2018

This is a textbook case of how dehumanizing and racist rhetoric works. The question references a hypothetical MS-13 member. Trump immediately pivots to a vaguer “people trying to come into the country” who we’re “taking out.”

— Julian Sanchez (@normative) May 17, 2018

There’s always some real crime by some specific member of a disfavored group that gets invoked to rationalize the move to talk about the more nebulous “they” who are animals and savages. But the specific case is always a pretext for indulging the generalization.

— Julian Sanchez (@normative) May 17, 2018

"Actually, MS-13 gangbangers are still human beings" is not the hill to die on imho

— Lachlan Markay (@lachlan) May 17, 2018

I’m cool with dying on the hill that doesn’t dehumanize people of color. https://t.co/dfUAWajwEU

— Celia (@_celia_bedelia_) May 17, 2018

i heard the "liberals express sympathy for ms-13" bullshit before. it was 2002-4 and the cons said we were expressing sympathy for al qaeda. these people have not changed. i keep trying to make that clear.

— Oliver Willis (@owillis) May 17, 2018

Anyone who doesn’t believe Trump’s “These aren’t people. These are animals.” comments weren’t meant for all immigrants of color, I remind you also in this week, his regime is setting up internment camps for undocumented children who will separated from parents upon crossing.

— Amy Siskind (@Amy_Siskind) May 17, 2018

When Trump defenders claim he’s too ignorant of history to realize he keeps reaching for the tools of despotism, do they suppose all despots typically study up on their antecedents before plunging in? Some are just naturals.

— Schooley (@Rschooley) May 17, 2018

Even the Queen of Trumpian Gossip at the FTFNYT!…

This is the same thing Trump has done since fall 2015. Issue mushy-edged statement that is meant to leave an impression. Waits for media reaction. Then screams he was taken out of context. Then half the media self-flagellates. How many times does this cycle have to get repeated? https://t.co/SNb3sMLhNE
