So Thurston got into my room, climbed onto the bed, and somehow pulled my sleep apnea mask down off a 5 ft tall dresser and destroyed it. That would be #6 that he has shredded, and insurance is not going to cover anymore this year. So no sleep tonight and out who knows how much money to buy some new ones.
I wish I could send him away for two years and have him come back not a puppy. And this is not a training issue. You can’t train away asshole.

I’m not particularly invested in any of the games being played tonight EXCEPT that I’d like to see the ‘Cocks defeat the ‘Heels (not going well so far). Here’s tonight’s games:
Anyone got any picks to share?
Patsy Marie (boxer dog who had surgery) update: She was so sad and miserable when she came home, and her sadness and misery were so exacerbated by the Cone of Shame that we removed it and are just watching her and the other dog like hawks. I’m sure at some point she’ll perk up enough to wear it, at which time I’ll share photos.

I remember once when I was a kid, a church down the street from us had a “live” nativity scene on Christmas Eve, with actual humans portraying Mary, Joseph, Baby Jeebus and the three wise men as well as real cows, goats and sheep to represent the alleged Holy Family’s barn-mates. Sheep weren’t common in that part of Florida, so this live nativity dealio was my first opportunity to pet a sheep. The texture of the animal’s coat wasn’t what I expected. Rather than furry plushness, it was like touching a sofa. The wool fibers fused together to form a somewhat rigid surface.
I was reminded of that when I read this Buzzfeed report on the saga of a stray, unshorn sheep that was recently captured in Australia. His coat had not been shorn for five years:
A team of professional sheep shearers were called in, and they removed a record 89 pounds of wool from the poor critter, who now looks like this (the pink is antiseptic spray, according to Buzzfeed):
The sheep, who was named Chris by his rescuers, will be someone’s pet now. He must feel lighter than air now that he’s not toting nearly 90 pounds of sofa cushions around. Fascinating photos of the epic shearing process at the Buzzfeed link above. It’s somewhat akin to shucking an oyster.
In other animal news, my beloved boxer dog Patsy Marie is having surgery this morning to remove a cyst. It’s a minor thing, but worrisome. Both dogs were outraged when the food and water bowls were taken up last night (no food or water after midnight before a surgery).
I put the bowls back down when the mister left to take Patsy to the vet, but our other dog is too pissed off about being left behind and puzzled by Patsy’s absence to eat or drink.
Patsy Marie should be back home this afternoon, possibly with a Cone of Shame. If so, I will share pix.

Just wanted to pop in and thank you all for donating to the fall fundraiser, and I have asked Mistermix, who knows something about coding, is going to be in contact with the designer and they are going to hammer out the details. We’re going to try to go for all the bells and whistles while keeping the integrity of the site the same. A brief moment so you can all chuckle about the idea of this site having any integrity. But you know what I mean. If you still want to donate, here’s the info:
If you want to donate via snail mail, the email addy is:
And, as promised, another picture of everyone’s favorite recovering patient:
Thurston clearly does not understand the “shame” portion of cone of shame, because he honestly looks happier than a pig in shit. I love the little soul patch on his underbite- so cute in person when he holds still long enough to let you see it.
If you look closely, you will notice one of the el cheapo upright vacuum cleaners and two handheld vacuums positioned strategically around the house to quickly clean up whatever the hell we have shredded. It’s to the point now that we don’t even put them away, we just leave the standing in the middle of the damned room because we know we are going to need it in a few hours.
They tell me they grow out of this stage, but I am not sure. Lily and Rosie came broken in.

From commentor Summer:
Today, I came home and my neighbors’ kids were holding this girl with a piece of string. They said another neighbor had turned her loose when her puppies died (maybe a couple of weeks ago), and they were really worried that she was going to die. She seemed very submissive, so I brought her in, she only glanced at my cat and let him sniff her legs while she ate. Then we went on a walk along the river, this girl and my two older dogs.
All was fabulous and then my collie mix Layla came up right after I’d been eating something and little miss bit her. Deep puncture on the face. So I can’t keep her, and am actually afraid to have her in the house with a cat.
I am paying to board her right now in addition to shots (and antibiotics and rabies booster for my dog) and am really hoping that someone who doesn’t have pets might be interested. I’ll take her to people in the Carolinas/Virginia area.
She is great with me. Very submissive, sweet, bonded in about twelve hours. Calm. She let me grab food from her, bathe her, and order her around. She’s a really good girl and would make a great pet. The kids knew her; she’d always been good with them.
Would you post and see if anyone in the area of Durham, NC, would be interested in a pit bull that might be a little bit problematic? It’s hard to tell what she’d really be like when she’s not malnourished, flea-ridden, with raw skin and who knows what else. I will get her shots and spay. She has been awesome with me. I really like her. I think I taught her to sit.
I really don’t want to let the kids down either. They got super happy to think they’d saved her.
If you have any leads — even to a rescue group that might be able to give this poor girl a chance — leave a comment. Or send me an email (click on my name in the right-hand column, or annelaurie at verizon dot net) and I’ll forward your message to Summer.
Anybody remember the name of Cole’s sister’s group? Most rescue groups are networked, they might have contacts in the NC area…
