Trump Crime Cartel Open Thread: Roger Stone Update

Politico‘s take:

[T]he judge said [Stone] could keep talking about the case with the caveat that she could change her mind and amend her order “if necessary.”

She also lumped Stone in with all the parties in the case and potential witnesses when they are around the D.C. courthouse. In those circumstances, Jackson cautioned that any comments must not “pose a substantial likelihood of material prejudice to this case” and cannot be “intended to influence any juror, potential juror, judge, witness or court officer or interfere with the administration of justice.”

Jackson concluded her ruling with a warning that Stone should consider that any excessive public comments may come back to bite him.

“While it is not up to the court to advise the defendant as to whether a succession of public statements would be in his best interest at this time, it notes that one factor that will be considered in the evaluation of any future request for relief based on pretrial publicity will be the extent to which the publicity was engendered by the defendant himself,” Jackson wrote…

To paraphrase comedian Ron White: Stone has the right to remain silent, but does he have the ability?

Related reading, from Jeffrey Toobin for the New Yorker, “Roger Stone’s and Jerome Corsi’s Time in the Barrel”:

The Stone indictment reads like a political black comedy. It stars a pair of mismatched operatives, Stone and the right-wing author Jerome Corsi, who, without formal connections to the Trump campaign, went on a transatlantic quest for dirt. Mueller’s indictment does not charge Stone with any involvement in the hacking, but accuses him of lying to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence about his (and Corsi’s) efforts to pry loose the hacked e-mails from WikiLeaks. Late Night No-Sympathy Open Thread: Don’t Go Away Mad…

When Bernie Sanders inevitably bumps up his non-stop nationwide grifting tour to a rerun presidential campaign, he might as well headline it RESPECT THE WHITE PENIS, because there isn’t one of his ‘positions’ that isn’t already being presented by a better (and in many cases more effective) candidate already. But, hey — maybe after last week’s debacle(s), genius ex-Repub media guru Steve Schmidt can persuade Howard Schultz to ‘defer’ his own vanity campaign in favor of supporting the dude voted Most Likely to Undercut Successful Opposition to Trump 2020!

And then these two can duke it out (quite possibly literally) for the undercard position as Sanders’ ‘In case of senile decline, break glass’ vice-presidential candidate:

******
Also, speaking of political traditions I hope 2020 will finally put into their coffins, let’s hear it for the end of the Great Whitebread-States Media-Mulcting Processionals:

Late-Night RussiaFvckery Open Thread: The Sideshow Artistes

Hey, remember “Putin’s best friend in Congress” Dana Rohrabacher? He lost his sweet sinecure, but he’s still out there grifting!

Elsewhere, Roger Stone is arguing that he can’t be gagged, because he’s no Kim Kardashian, per CNN:

Roger Stone is trying a new tactic in arguing against a federal judge who may restrict what he says in public: He’s claiming he’s not much of a celebrity…

His speech shouldn’t be restricted, because his lifeblood is writing and speaking about politics and fashion, his attorneys say. But while he’s known in some circles, Stone is nowhere near as famous as Kim Kardashian, his attorneys argued. That lack of fame means he will be able to have an unbiased jury when his case goes to trial.

“While Roger Stone may be familiar to those who closely follow American politics, he is hardly ubiquitous in the larger landscape of popular consciousness,” his attorneys wrote.

“An example of how limited and narrow his public presence is, is that Kim Kardashian has 59.5 million followers on Twitter,” they added. Stone, meanwhile, has no Twitter presence (he was banned by the service in 2017). Stone has 39,000 followers on Instagram, while Kardashian has 126 million, his legal team argued…

Late Night RussiaFvckery-Adjacent Open Thread: All-American Con Artist Indicted

Another two-bit grifter who’d still be safely under the radar if only Trump hadn’t been inserted into the White House by a foreign power:

Paul Erickson became the subject of public interest after his girlfriend, Maria Butina, was charged last year and pleaded guilty to conspiring with a senior Russian official to infiltrate American conservative political circles as an undeclared agent for the Kremlin…

As part of that plea, Butina admitted to working with an American political operative to forge connections with officials at the National Rifle Association, conservative leaders and 2016 presidential candidates, including Donald Trump.

The political operative has been identified by government officials as Erickson, a longtime GOP political adviser from South Dakota, who managed the 1992 presidential campaign of Pat Buchanan. Erickson’s lawyer, William Hurd, has said he is a “good American” who “has never done anything to hurt our country and never would.”…

One of the money transfers listed in the indictment as an instance of money laundering is a $20,472 payment Erickson made in June 2017 to American University — the school Butina attended…

Didn’t have a chance to post this earlier, but it would seem relevant. From the NYTimes, “N.R.A. Seeks Distance From Russia as Investigations Heat Up”:

When a delegation of high-profile donors, boosters and board members from the National Rifle Association traveled to Russia in 2015, they visited a gun factory in Moscow, took in a ballet and met with members of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

But now the N.R.A. is seeking to distance itself from the trip, after revelations that a Russian woman who helped arrange it, Maria Butina, was conspiring to infiltrate the organization.

The trip has been a subject of scrutiny in at least four inquiries into the N.R.A.’s ties to Russia; questions about the N.R.A. have also surfaced in the investigation by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III. Newly empowered congressional Democrats are now stepping up efforts to uncover how much money the N.R.A. received from Russia, and whether the group served as a conduit for Russian funds into the 2016 Trump campaign…

One of Putin’s Other Useful Idiots Weighs In: Swanson TV Dinner Hour of White Power Glower Hour Edition

Tonight on The Swanson TV Dinner Hour of White Power Glower Hour, Putin’s other useless idiot has thoughts to share. Bozhe moi!

You can click across if you like for the rest of Dr. Stein’s deep thoughts on the structure and nature of the American political system, American politics, and, of course, Dr. Jill Stein who, Dr. Jill Stein holds in exceedingly high regard.

(Dr. Stein and LTG Flynn dining with Vladimir Putin in December 2015)

It is important to remember that when Dr. Stein and LTG Flynn were dining with Putin and enjoying the gala, the NRA’s delegation was being hosted in Moscow by Alexander Torshin, Mariia Butina, and several Russian government officials. This amount of coincidence takes a lot of planning!
