In the spirit of Balloon Juice’s love for all animals adopted, I thought that I would send along a photo of our newly adopted office cat….named Sandy of course.
My office is located on the beach in Cosey Beach East Haven, CT. This neighborhood took it hard last year with Irene and again this year with Sandy. The house between us and the water was washed away this time and countless others were damaged beyond repair. When we returned to our office (converted apartment) we found the cat meowing loudly at the door and being huge animal lovers, my partner and I let him in and he is here for good.
It did not take long for him to make himself comfortable, as you can see by the picture which was taken less than four hours after we let him in! He loves sitting in our office chairs when we are not in them and spends the rest of the time on my desk or lap, purring louder than any cat I have ever had.
Here is the kicker, when we found out who he belonged to, we reached out, but were told to either just let him about the neighborhood or drop him off at a shelter. I can never understand how anybody could feel that way about a living thing, but at least he has a happy ending.
One final note, he does not have the girth of Tunch, but his belly is only a couple of stamps from dragging on the ground.

From commentor Reid K:
Writing this from my tablet, so forgive misspellings or incoherencies. Last night, as I was dropping off my partner in crime, I met a young, maybe six months old at the most grey tiger kitten. He’s terribly affectionate, but very scared of my two current kitties. I have to get him out of here because I can’t feed him in my bedroom for lots of reasons. In addition, and I hate to say this, but I can’t afford a third baby right now. It’s too bad – he’s a pure lap cat.
I don’t have any pictures because I can’t figure out the camera on this piece of equipment. If commenters want to help with that too, I’d appreciate it. But what I really need is a foster or potential home.
I’ll be away from the computer until this evening, but if you have any leads, send me an email at AnneLaurie (at) verizon.net (click on my name in the right-hand column) and I’ll forward them to Reid.

Those whose ennui has not completely enervated their ability to care about such mundane matters will no doubt be pleased to hear that Henri has a book to (pre)-sell.

Happy Cat – Rescue Updates
Samantha in Maryland has her forever family! Update from commentor Mystical Chick:
Tommy took such great care of Samantha, getting her all cleaned up and spiffy and delivered her to my very door in a new carrier with food, toys and a bed. She is a darling little thing – still kind of skittish (hiding under the bed at present) but has come out to get some love and use the litter box. I’m hoping for a peaceful alliance between Sammy and my cat Sophia and dog Brogan when we all get together. Right now, those two are *very curious* about the newcomer!
I’m still not sure what possessed me to claim her other than the hand of the Universe (and as you can see by my signature, I’m all kinds of woo-woo) so I trust that it was for a reason and I’m very thankful for the kindness and generosity of Tommy and his wife. Truly compassionate people (and clearly Democrats!).
And news about the Brooklyn feral colony from La Caterina, Saturday afternoon:
Ballon Juicers are, as always, the best. We’ve received contributions for the kitty cleanup/restocking in the amount of $300 so far, and one volunteer, commenter AMD, who’s plunged right in there with us. We’ve been here at the Navy Yard since around 10:30, and have buried oily sludge, moved feeding stations and installed winter shelters, and replaced Kitteh food in serious size bags.
The biggest station, at the Annex, is being cleaned, refurbished and winter shelters are being set out.
The donations will feed and house our feline friends well into the winter, and we are very grateful!

I seriously wish I could put into the words the temptation I was experiencing when I took this picture:
If I didn’t live alone and wasn’t afraid of bleeding out before 911 responded, I would have done it.
UPDATE: Cat Rescue Bleg – Brooklyn

From commentor La Caterina:
Our 50+ cat colony in the Brooklyn Navy Yard mostly survived the storm, but many of their feeding stations were destroyed, and we lost a fair amount of stored food. We are afraid some of the missing cats were poisoned by toxic spills, but we are hopeful they will reappear soon. It’s been a tough year for the colony — we’ve trapped, neutered and returned at least 15 kittens produced by intact cats that slipped into the population. Due to raccoon activity we can only feed a day’s worth of food at a time — that means visiting each of the 8 feeding stations every day.
One of our primary caretakers is out of commission because her family lost their home in Staten Island to flooding. Another rescuer in Staten Island who helps us with holding and post-surgery recovery has extensive damage and has evacuated. For the last three years we’ve purchased all the food and supplies for the colony ourselves, with occasional donations from friends. We’re asking for donations now to replace our feeders, restock food, build some new feeding platforms and shelters and to set up a nonprofit (Waterfront Cats) so that we can solicit corporate donations and grants in the future.
We’re inviting NYC cat lovers to join us this Saturday at the Navy Yard for a post-Sandy clean up. Wear warm sturdy clothes and work boots or waders. We can provide transportation by car for a few volunteers each from Manhattan, Brooklyn and possibly Queens.
