Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Yes we did.

The willow is too close to the house.

Four legs? good! two legs? we’re not so sure…

I can’t take this shit today. I just can’t.

Everybody saw this coming.

There’s some extremely good trouble headed their way.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Too inconsequential to be sued

How do you get liars to care about the truth?

False Scribes! False Scribes!

Deploy the moving finger of emphasisity!

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Verified, but limited!

Naturally gregarious and alpha

This is a big f—–g deal.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Well, except the wingnuts. fuck those guys!

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The ‘Heartbreak’ of Hyperlexia

This post is in: Readership Capture, Blogospheric Navel-Gazing

Tom Scocca at Slate has an post examining Tina Brown’s gift for stoking the ever-flickering terrors behind Rich People Problems: Parents of small children! Is your preschooler able to read and write already? If you just nodded “yes,” with a little flicker of pride and satisfaction—well, Tina Brown’s Newsweek has a revelation for you. The …

But John, You Can’t Be This Stupid To Really Think He Flip-Flopped on Signing Statements

by John Cole|  April 17, 20112:42 pm| 217 Comments

This post is in: Readership Capture, OBAMA IS WORSE THAN BUSH HE SOLD US OUT!!

Yesterday, in the comments: Cole’s not stupid, so I suspect we’re being trolled. Yeah, that’s quite the flip-flop, the way Obama approached signing statements exactly as he said he would in the questionnaire. You’re not getting slaughtered in the comments because of their title, John, it’s because you don’t know what the hell you’re talking …

A Bleg and a Reward

This post is in: Bleg, Music, Open Threads, WTF?

Update:  If folks would post links to online versions of their suggestions as available, we’d have a pretty good afternoon concert going, don’t you think? Bleg first…gotta sing for your supper, folks, more or less literally. Here’s the story:  I received a note from my younger brother today, another one of my siblings with all …

Oh, that.

This is a couple of years old now, maybe more — but I hadn’t seen it until another brother forwarded it to me this a.m.  It is beyond surreal, perhaps NSFW, not exactly sensitive to more or less anyone’s sensibilities, (if Vegas showmanship, complete with quadrapedal lap dances, offend you, don’t watch)…

…and proof, if any were needed, that the French are different:

To which, what can one say, except that “Naturellement Pulpeuse” would make a great rotating tag for this blog.

*I’m considering suing them for my share.  In an idle kind of way it would be fascinating to see if I could find a lawyer willing to take the case.  Make for a great decline and fall story, wouldn’t you say?

Tuesday Night Open Thread: Reading

Now that the inaugural Ballon Juice Book Discussion Chapter can see the light at the end of the tunnel for NIXONLAND (four more weeks! four more weeks!), I’d like to (re)propose Gail Collins’ When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present as our next book. (Or one of our …

DC

This post is in: Bleg, Blogospheric Navel-Gazing

On Monday night I am thinking Addis Ababa in Silver Spring, 7:30-ish. Send an email if you might want to go so I can call ahead for a table. Beck and Lauriol Plaza both sound like fun, especially that beer list at Beck, but I feel iffy about the price (Beck) and waiting too long …

Bleg!

This post is in: Bleg

For those of you who live in DC or visit it a lot, let’s say that you have to choose three or four places to eat before the world ends. I plan to visit Best Cellars for a couple cases of wine, and lunch will probably happen somewhere in Chinatown where (preferably) they don’t speak …

Calling from the VOID

Ian Murphy, the guy who pranked Scott Walker, is the Green Party candidate in NY-26, the seat vacated by shirtless hunk Chris Lee. I don’t think Democrats have a chance in the special anyway, and I like what he has to say. Here’s his introductory video.
