Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

I really should read my own blog.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

People are complicated. Love is not.

The math demands it!

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Verified, but limited!

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Women: they get shit done

What fresh hell is this?

We need fewer warriors in public service and more gardeners.

This blog goes to 11…

How do you get liars to care about the truth?

Saul Alinsky is my co-pilot.

Not all heroes wear capes.

We still have time to mess this up!

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

This blog will pay for itself.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Late Night Open Thread: Is An Iranian Cult Courting Trump’s Cabinet Picks?

Elaine Chao, #Trump's Transportation Sec, has also received $ from the Iranian org. on US terrorist list for 15 yrs. pic.twitter.com/e4zPJhOOFX

… Joining Trump faves Giuliani and Bolton, apparently. I know almost nothing of the MKO, but I do remember the Unification Church (aka ‘Moonies’) spending a supercarrier of money courting various GOP machers during the Reagan Administration — with results somewhere between the farcical and the sinister, depending on your paranoia levels. (Figures that the Bush Crime Family would be the main U.S. beneficiary, of course.)

Getting sucked into Iran’s internal politics seems a lot more dangerous — not least because Trump’s potential cabinet picks have nowhere near the level of political experience of the foreign policy people around Reagan (and back in the 1980s, who could’ve imagined that phrase being written in earnest truth?).

Anybody with more knowledge want to predict whether these “approaches” have the potential for genuine danger? Or is it just more would-be “global leaders” throwing their money down another Trump/GOP rathole?

(Last word is a typo for ‘Paris’, I think.)

@lrozen I see, but it really looks like that MKO has a say in Trump transition team! Giuliani, Bolton, Gingrich, Townsend…

Confirmed that Steven Mnuchin, a veteran financier and Trump's national finance chair, to be Treasury secretary, as first reported by NYT.

— Philip Rucker (@PhilipRucker) November 29, 2016

Trump doesn’t have a coherent view of policy. But he does have an ethos of plunder. And he’s stacking his cabinet w like-minded jackals https://t.co/MB9VJQw6hT

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) November 30, 2016

Professor Krugman, in the NYTimes, “Why Corruption Matters“:

…[W]e could be talking about a lot of money — think billions, not millions, to Mr. Trump alone (which is why his promise not to take his salary is a sick joke). But America is a very rich country, whose government spends more than $4 trillion a year, so even large-scale looting amounts to rounding error. What’s important is not the money that sticks to the fingers of the inner circle, but what they do to get that money, and the bad policy that results…

… I’ve already written about the Trump infrastructure plan, which for no obvious reason involves widespread privatization of public assets. No obvious reason, that is, except the huge opportunities for cronyism and profiteering that would be opened up.

But what’s truly scary is the potential impact of corruption on foreign policy. Again, foreign governments are already trying to buy influence by adding to Mr. Trump’s personal wealth, and he is welcoming their efforts…

Destruction of democratic norms aside, however, think about the tilt this de facto bribery will give to U.S. policy. What kind of regime can buy influence by enriching the president and his friends? The answer is, only a government that doesn’t adhere to the rule of law.

Think about it: Could Britain or Canada curry favor with the incoming administration by waiving regulations to promote Trump golf courses or directing business to Trump hotels? No — those nations have free presses, independent courts, and rules designed to prevent exactly that kind of improper behavior. On the other hand, someplace like Vladimir Putin’s Russia can easily funnel vast sums to the man at the top in return for, say, the withdrawal of security guarantees for the Baltic States…

As Charlie Pierce reminds us, last time the spoils-seeking got this blatant, then-President Harding was hustled off on a strenuous nationwide publicity tour from which he did not return. I can imagine Mike Pence looking in the mirror and imagining himself the next Calvin Coolidge… if only because the fewer words he can say, the less of an idiot he will look.

Late Night Open Thread: One Could Almost Feel Sorry for Romney

This post is in: Hail to the Hairpiece, Open Threads, Republican Venality, Trump Crime Cartel, Assholes, Decline and Fall, Romney of the Uncanny Valley

Kellyanne is acting like Mitt is hiding that one last Dalmation puppy needed to finish the marvelous coat before inauguration day.

— John Weaver (@JWGOP) November 27, 2016

… Except, y’know, the silly bastid is willfully submitting himself to this shiteshow. Per AP:

… Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who is heading the transition effort, teased “a number of very important announcements tomorrow” as he exited Trump Tower Monday night.

Pence is said to be among those backing Romney for State. Romney was fiercely critical of Trump throughout the campaign but is interested in the Cabinet position, and they discussed it during a lengthy meeting earlier this month.

Other top Trump allies, notably campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, have launched a highly unusual public campaign to warn the president-elect that nominating Romney would be seen as a betrayal by his supporters. Conway’s comments stirred speculation that she is seeking to either force Trump’s hand or give him cover for ultimately passing over Romney.

Three people close to the transition team said Trump had been aware that Conway planned to voice her opinion, both on Twitter and in television interviews. They disputed reports that Trump was furious at her and suggested his decision to consider additional candidates instead highlighted her influence…

Trump was also considering former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani for Homeland Security secretary, according to those close to the transition process. Giuliani was initially the front-runner for State and is still in the mix. But questions about his overseas business dealings, as well as the mayor’s public campaigning for the job, have given Trump pause…

I kinda like Josh Barro’s theory…

Whose power are Trump's loyalists worried SecState Romney would dilute — Trump's, or their own? https://t.co/C4y4oHrCR4

— Josh Barro (@jbarro) November 28, 2016

… Remember the calculus for the C-listers who signed up with Trump early.

They debased themselves by signing up with a candidate who was widely considered ridiculous and unacceptable by Republican insiders. In exchange, they would line up — in the unlikely event Trump won — for administration jobs for which they would otherwise be considered laughably unsuitable.

This calculus seems to have worked out for Michael Flynn and perhaps Ben Carson. But a Romney appointment would be a severe threat to the dynamic the Trump sycophants depend on.

If a consummate party establishmentarian who did not support Trump — indeed, one who said Trump was “playing the American public for suckers” — can be forgiven and given a top job, what role would be left for Rudy Giuliani or Mike Huckabee?…

…than Trump is. Plus, Reagan had been a two-term governor of California, and he had a cadre of experienced and skill aides around him…

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) November 22, 2016

…and unlike Nancy Reagan, Melania probably will be barely engaged.

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) November 22, 2016

I was old enough to be paying attention during the Reagan years. He was surrounded by criminals and grifters (i.e., Republicans), but most of his top-level aides were experienced professionals who wanted to keep the political machinery running well enough that they could keep looting the Treasury over the long term. (Look at his VP, Poppy Bush, who wanted to be Reagan’s replacement and to hand the Oval Office down to his worthless descendents.) His wife Nancy didn’t just love him fiercely, she had an abused child’s instinct for sensing who was on her dear Ronny’s side, and who couldn’t be trusted. His kids didn’t like her, nor she them, but the whole clan had in common a drive to protect the old man from cruel “outsiders”, even when they didn’t trust each other. And Reagan’s entire life had been about serving as a genial figurehead, someone who could hit his mark and recite a script no matter how dire his mental state or unfriendly his audience.

Trump, on the other hand, doesn’t have anyone but (mostly failed) criminals and grifters to call upon professionally. No two of his “team” seem to be pulling in the same direction except coincidentally, and not one of them has a timeline longer than 2018 (if that). His adult kids have been singularly unsuccessful in their own careers, outside of tapping Daddy’s bank account(s) — and that includes Jared Kushner, whose main accomplishments seem to be not getting thrown in jail for his “real estate development” business, and spending millions of his disgraced father’s money to buy into the fringes of NYC society. Trump’s current wife has already made it clear she’ll spend as little time as possible in Washington, not that anyone can blame her for prioritizing her own investments over the old man’s latest dangerous whimsey. And Trump’s career has been about acting the keep-’em-guessing business-bully, someone who could be relied upon only to be unreliable… or, as it might be politely phrased, unpredictable. Buckle up, everybody!

I’ve never watched either House of Cards or Game of Thrones, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s already some Trump-in-the-White-House mashups of the two germinating…

If His Lips Move, He’s Lying…part [n]

by Tom Levenson|  November 22, 20169:08 am| 272 Comments

This post is in: Hail to the Hairpiece, Republican Stupidity, Republican Venality, Trump Crime Cartel, I Can't Believe We're Losing to These People, Nobody could have predicted, Not Normal

Donald Trump has yet to meet with the prime minister of the United Kingdom — arguably the closest ally of the United States.  He has found time to meet with representatives of Britain’s Lets-Play-Footsie-With-Fascists UKIP party including its well-dressed proto-fascist leader, Nigel Farange.

In that meeting Hair Führer focused on what really matters in the trans-Atlantic alliance.

Offshore wind farms in Scotland [h/t TPM]:

[Andy] Wigmore, who coordinated the communications effort for the push for Britain to leave the European Union, told The Express and the New York Times that Trump asked them to oppose new wind farms….

Wigmore told The Express that Trump “is dismayed that his beloved Scotland has become over-run with ugly wind farms which he believes are a blight on the stunning landscape.”

Rich guy doesn’t like looking at windmills. Rich guy manages to grasp real power. Rich guy starts f**king with other nations’ energy policy, land use decisions and the rest because…he can.

Welcome to the post policy presidency.  Trump has no idea what energy mix makes sense and he doesn’t care.  Just doesn’t like looking at turbines.  So lose the buggers, amirite!

paul_gauguin_-_the_queens_mill

Apparently, Trump’s intervention appears to have worked, sort of:

Wigmore said that Trump “did suggest that we should campaign on it” and that the conversation “spurred us in and we will be going for it,” according to the New York Times.

Going for it, in this case, meaning that a party and a leadership roundly loathed in Scotland will argle bargle pwfft or something.  But gotta stroke the ferret-heedit shitgibbon, and talk is cheap.

The lagniappe, utterly unsurprisingly, is that the default position of the Trump crowd to any challenge is to lie:

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks denied to the New York Times that Trump discussed wind farms during his meeting with Farage. When the Times told Hicks that Wigmore gave an account of the wind farm discussion, Hicks did not respond with further comment, according to the Times.

With every passing day it becomes yet more clear that there is no way that Donald Trump can handle the presidency.  With each passing day his presidency draws closer.

WASF.

The president will lie to us for years while picking fights on twitter and quietly telling his children which stocks to buy.

— Jon Lovett (@jonlovett) November 19, 2016

It’s gonna be in heavy rotation, if current reports are any guide. Paul Waldman, in the Washington Post, “Welcome to the Trump kleptocracy“:

“It’s very possible that I could be the first presidential candidate to run and make money on it,” Donald Trump said back in 2000 when he was contemplating a bid that he never followed through on. And while he didn’t actually turn a profit on his 2016 run, it’s looking more and more likely that being president is going to be very lucrative for Trump. By the time it’s over, he may even be worth as much as he has always claimed to be.

The words “conflict of interest” don’t begin to describe what the Trump administration is shaping up to look like — though there will be plenty of conflicts of interest with administration figures such as Rudy Giuliani, who made millions from foreign governments and corporations, some of which are hostile to the United States. But the real action is going to be in Trump’s own family.

Anti-nepotism laws prevent Trump from giving his family members jobs in the administration. But don’t think that’s going to stop them from being active participants in U.S. government decision-making, or using the fact that Trump is president to keep money flowing in. In fact, we could see the president enriching himself and his family on a scale that we normally associate with post-Soviet kleptocrats and Third World dictators.

For starters, Ivanka, Eric and Donald Trump Jr. are on the executive committee of Trump’s transition team, helping decide who gets hired for key positions and what the administration’s initial focus will be. We learned that someone on the transition team inquired about obtaining security clearances for the three so that they could see classified information (though the Trump team protested that the request did not come from Trump himself). Then there’s the matter of Ivanka Trump’s husband…

Kushner — whose knowledge of government is so minimal that he was apparently surprised to learn that the Obama staffers in the White House wouldn’t be staying on to serve President Trump — is shaping up as perhaps his father-in-law’s closest adviser. He won’t have an official position, yet he’ll be privy to some of the most sensitive intelligence secrets the government possesses…
