Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Almost as fun as hiking the Appalachian Trail

I’m only here for the duck photos.

Shelter in place is one thing. Shelter in pants is quite another.

Verified, but limited!

Naturally gregarious and alpha

Han shot first.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Four legs? good! two legs? we’re not so sure…

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Gastritis broke my calculator.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

… down to kool-aid drinkers and next of kin at the trump White House

Yes we did.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Tick tock motherfuckers! Tick fucking tock!

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

What We Preserve – Ourselves

You guys need a break. It’s far too easy to keep obsessing about what’s going on. Frankly, there’s not much you can do besides educate yourself, get others to know what’s happening and text your Senators via ResistBot to remind them there’s a little thing called rule of law and it doesn’t give a damn about whether there’s a republican or a democrat breaking it. Here’s a nice, soothing open thread for you. Enjoy these pictures of random things I’ve photographed. Show off your talents with some nice calm photos.

Oh, before I go. Obligatory cat pic. Plus a verse. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all. As in, this is a long haul thing, don’t wear yourself out. So sayeth the Lord.

The War Within – Day 12

This post is in: Cat Blogging, Open Threads, Pet Blogging, All we want is life beyond the thunderdome

These two assholes. Two adorable, jerkified assholes.

Hime & Odo, just being themselves

For the past 2 weeks, we have been at war in this household. Over food. You see, the little darlings love themselves some wet food. And then they don’t. They have dry – all day, every day – a kitten likes a snackerel of wet throughout the day. Each one gets half a can. We have gone through multiple brands & multiple flavors per brand. Once I id the flavors they like, I add it to the list. So shopping for their food requires 2 stores, 3 brands and about 3-4 different flavors for a month.

They like the wet in a rotation. What’s the rotation? God only knows. The food they liked last week? Now they lick it and look at you like you didn’t try. Did they gobble up the turkey & cheese shreds Tuesday? Then Thursday they hate it. Was Ocean Whitefish & Shrimp tasty as hell on Friday? Monday, it’s the most disgusting thing on earth. And repeat ad infinitum.

I’ve learned not to rage at these unbelievable scoundrels. Especially since I have to watch expenses like a hawk or a cat who is STARVED, I TELL YOU stares at me when I go make my food. Instead, I don’t give them any wet. I cut it back, just in case they’re not really that hungry and if that isn’t finished, I cut it out entirely. Sucks to be you, kiddo. I got thumbs and you got crumbs so go eat dry. It’s like a functioning democracy. Treat it like you despise it and the person with the power will take it away. Too bad, so sad. Unlike those bastards, I usually bring back the foods in a day or so. They know the drill. Sometimes, I swear they take turns biting the bullet and finishing leftovers so they can go, “Ah-ha! See, we did finish breakfast!” Got my eyes on you two. But other than that, they’re pretty perfect. Although this year, they got more stubborn. Oh, well, so am I. Get up, human, it’s breakfast time

Look at that face. Adorable, elegant, lovingly demanding. Let us step back to Hime’s first Christmas with the family.

Rock & Roller Gal

There she is. A delicate little flower.

2 Handfuls of Cat For Christmas

Brother Odoriki had the kitty snuffles when he was adopted, hence the booger snout. Hime was just naturally perfect. Or so I thought. So, on Christmas Day, Hime demonstrated she had a tender stomach. And a bad case of the runs. Worse, she was intimidated by the litterbox. And shadows, slight motions, a slight breeze. She was a complete coward about everything and still is Queen Jitters. After the 3rd cleanup of a poop spill outside the low box, I was determined that this time, I’d wait patiently and just help her keep her tiny butt in the giant litterbox.

This, of course, did not go well. It’s Christmas morning, I’ve been cleaning all week and the result of my frustrated attempt at kitten corralling was… a tiny white projectile spraying liquid shit across the linoleum, the carpeted downstairs, up the stairs and under the sofa.

I really wanted to cry. My lovely quiet Christmas was a fetid, poop garlanded mess. My housemate came down to see what the hubbub was about and managed to pin Herself. We looked at each other and just burst out laughing. Finally, after capturing the little biological weapon, I called my friend’s dad, who’s a large animal vet as well as the head of an NGO that teaches about zoonosis & husbandry in African countries, and drove her over for a Christmas freebie checkup. We cleaned EVERYTHING, including her butt and put her on very simple food for a day or so. The rest of Christmas was lovely, since she forgave her humans for daring to pen her and get her muddbutt checked out.

Yes, I was still finding little poop spots days later. But I feel very loved. Merry Not Stinky Christmas!

Merry Christmas To All & To All A Good Night

Just Be Nice, Dammit

I’m grumpy, sick of applying for jobs and probably not great to be around, so play nicely in this sandbox since the other one is full.

I made cookies for the upcoming community feast for the homeless and dropped off my mitzvah of personal care supplies for the homeless. It’s my way of feeling better. Besides eating cookies. What’s yours?

I think I perfected my gluten-free vegan peanut butter one. I don’t know why I bother, I never write down my recipes unless I’m writing a column and I haven’t had one of those in an age.

Peanut Butter Cookies with Walnuts & Toffee

I have a few more things to make for my Christmas Day meals where we go full on Jamaican. Stew Beef, Ackee & (Not) Saltfish, Bulla Bread. Maybe some (Not) Beef Patties. My fridge is full of the sorrel I brewed last month and half the Jamaican Rum Cake I started 3 weeks ago. Drop some Christmas recipes and thoughts in the comments. I may read them, I may be running dungeons in WoW, who knows.

Have at it, rascals.

Paging Doctor Teeth

Doctor Teeth & The Electric Mayhem Can’t Be Beat

Last week was a frustrating week in chez Mara. After years of messing around with cleanings for the old teeth, I finally got to see a periodontist for a gap in my back teeth. Please note, this has been an issue I’ve brought up for years. And every hygienist & dentist has brought it up to me, as if I have jack shit to do with solving bone loss in my jaw.

The solution, it turns out, is cutting open my gum & stuffing it with, uh, bone, I believe. Like stuffing a bra with tissues only the hope is the tissues will bond with the boobies to build healthy bone in the jaw. Or something like that. This procedure costs $3k. With insurance. Which is a yikes. And a “motherfuck, is this going to give me superpowers, at least? ” Because, yikes, and on both sides of my jaw. Double yikes.

I’ve been struck by how ridiculous the American health insurance & medical system is. We have outrageous costs for service & materials, yet we only talk about insurance costs. Coverage for dental and mental health are often discrete from general coverage. Why has the industry been allowed to do this? Last I checked, your mind operating right helps your body & teeth are a critically important component of eating, which is a reason to live. Bacterial infection in your mouth can have some serious consequences, RIP Andy Hallett. We can implement insurance reform measures but making healthcare affordable will require addressing the scale of costs in the U.S. for medicine, tools, personnel, materials — the whole shebang. I don’t believe Medicare for All addresses that except with the idea that we excise insurance companies from the equation. Stepping over the landmine of legal authority, dealing with displaced employees, etc., I don’t get the impression that’s something people are truly dealing with in their proposals.

No human system is perfect. We’re going to be retooling things for decades, as we should have been for all time past. I guess the problem is we have to cure innate selfishness so we don’t craft health policy that respects profit over patients, yet respects the rights of doctors et al to make money. No one will get everything they want but we should get what we need.

We also need to address medical outcome disparities for POC. I wouldn’t have gotten my consultation without finally getting mad and saying, “Look, this has been going on for years, why are you just talking about cleanings still? Shouldn’t you do more? What are my options?” I wish I was only talking about a few months and one provider. We’re talking over 8 years and 3 dental providers. This could have been tried years ago, when I had the actual income to do it. Instead, lots of “caution”. It doesn’t mean any of the dental offices were unskilled or that they didn’t provide decent service. But when it comes to offering good health action plans, advanced care options – they’ve all fallen short and I’m not alone. This shit kills people. I’m probably more forward about finding solutions than others and I can attest that largely, I’ve been recommended to be patient. Many times, that patience would have severely injured me or killed me, see also, adventures with birth control, Georgia & the blood thinners. How do we get medical providers to accept & overcome implicit biases? Maybe Mr. Anderson can weigh in with his valuable expertise.

We have a lot of work to do on medical care. Just fixing the for profit insurance part of it won’t resolve it. I’d love to see anyone running for office who’d make a stab at these issues. I’d also like to be a billionaire just so I can upend the entire GOP as my personal petty vendetta. So I’ll settle for landing some more VO gigs so I can make an action plan on this teeth bullshit. Have at folks. And really, what kind of policy do you think should be discussed for any issue at all versus how it’s presented during elections? I got a million of them, but I’ll save it for another long post.

Within reason. Saw the last thread was getting a bit musty and crowded. Here’s a new one to play in.

Play nice

Not bad

Although, doing Zumba 3 days a week means my head is full of reggaeton.

Great to dance to; WTF MISOGYNY ASSHOLES on the videos, always.

Buuuut, I can’t say I’m not partial to these moves once in a while.

I love the classics

Either way, have it! Trying to get some work done and failing -SPECTACULARLY.
