CNN’s anchor just announced she JUST had a breathtaking interview with Dr. Sanjay Gupta that people needed to see. They broke to Dr. Gupta, who then held up a puppy as an example of the kind of things that ‘have to be left behind.’ The camera zoomed in to show the despondent pup, Goliath.
I shit you not.
Probably because Bush hates dogs. Unless he is using them on black people like Bull Connor. Really- Kanye West told me.
I take back every negative thing I have ever said about Aaron Brown, who by comparison the past few days, has been a model of sanity and sobriety.
DougJ
Thank God someone has finally found the real villain behind the weak response to this hurricane: Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Somehow, I knew it was his fault all along.
I guess we all owe Michael Brown a big apology.
Zifnab
Ok, so happy birthday. CNN jumped the shark. I suppose that if Gupta is reporting on dieing puppies, that means that everything is A-OK down in LA. As if FOX News or MSNBC hasn’t pulled dumb shit like this before.
As for the random Kanye West snipes, everyone’s entitled to his or her opinion, and if some people find themselves convinced that Bush cares less about Black people and more about Trent Lott’s house then by all means, let them state their views.
StupidityRules
Who cares about the animals? And why does the news programs give out info about organistations that will work to save the animals? Unless it’s a dead animal contaminating the water it’s not important. I could say something about people more interested in saving a dog than a black man but then I guess some people in here would pop a vein. And since I belive human beings are a lot more important than animals, I won’t. Except I just did. Ooops.
Make sure all humans are safe. Then take care of the animals.
John Cole
This is such a silly comment I don’t know where to begin.
over it
Now, I do agree wholeheartedly that people should be given full priority over pets….however, the pets need to be rescued when possible as well. My dogs are part of my family. Every dog I have had since I was born has been a part of the family. I know that I am not the only one that feels like this. I see absolutely nothing wrong with giving the agencies that rescue animals recognition….in the long run, what they are doing helps more than just the animals. It helps ease the emotional truama of the owners as well.
I have given money to both the Red Cross and to Noah’s Wish. Next month I will give to both of them again. I believe that both organizations have their place in helping.
Jim Caputo
I didn’t see the show so I don’t know the context in which it was presented. If he was only pointing out the fact that there are animals there who need help, what’s the problem? Was he saying that animals should take priority over people? I doubt he said anything like that.
I gave equal amounts of money to the Humane Society of the U.S. and the Red Cross. I did this because I think they’ll be more than enough cash donated through various sources earmarked for people, there probably won’t be enough cash to care for all the pets who are also victims of this disaster.
Also, there’s a Long Island area benefit concert in the works that I’ve been asked to perform in that will raise money for the victims of the hurricane. It looks like it will be an all-day event with a tentative date of Sept. 17th but it’s not firm yet. The details are being worked out with the Red Cross, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, and one of the local townships. I’ll post details when it’s all official.
But back to the post…
John, why are you pissed off that people care about what happens to the animals? Isn’t there enough room in our hearts to care about people AND animals? Can’t we do both? I really don’t understand your animosity. It’s baffling. I’m tempted to unload on you, but I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you left out some things that would give your anger better context.
Steve
Such a silly diary, I don’t even know where to begin.
But as someone who knows people who work with animal shelters….
DO NOT! DO NOT! DO NOT MESS WITH ANIMAL LOVERS! Especially telling them their cats or dogs are pieces of filth and not worth saving as StupidityRules so aptly justifies his name.
Animal lovers are non partisan… they don’t give a shit about your pathetic republican or democratic parties or your political spin. They care about their pets.
ppGaz
Clearly these people have no respect for cats.
That does it, I am canceling my cable.
Jim Caputo
Some people just have a limited capacity for love.
I have three dogs and they are absolutely family to me. I even have a fairly sizable monetary provision in my will for their care should something happen to me.
Poika
Maybe you don’t own a dog, or if you do, maybe you keep him/her outside. While I have had dogs that I didn’t really care much for (like the 22 year old thing we inherited from my sister-in-law when she got divorced), I can’t even imagine being seperated from a living best friend, be it dog or human. And trust me- that’s what they come to be a lot of the time. I realize it may not be as important as Mom, but dammit- sometimes it comes close.
John Cole
I am an animal lover. My first links to charities were to Noah’s Wish and the AKC along with the Red Cross.
I was making the point that the coverage was breathless and over the top, as if this was some sort of breaking news.
over it
I guess I am just confused as to what John’s point was. I know that he has cats that he loves…..and I found out about Noah’s wish from one of his posts. I do not think it is a matter of him not caring about pets….I just don’t really get what the point is supposed to be though. Perhaps you could clarify a bit John?
StupidityRules
I got a cat. I care deeply for my cat. And since I don’t know any of you, I probably would prefer if anyone of you would die over my cat dying. But if I had to choose between the cat and my brother, it would be an easy choise.
And if I had to pick between a human I don’t know and cat I don’t know it would also be an easy choice.
For me it’s as simple as that.
bains
I just heard that Bush killed Santa, cuz… well we all know Bush hates christmas… and kids… and the NO Saints.
Bob
Zifnab, I am sure that there will be black people on Trent Lott’s patio. Someone to serve and clear the dishes.
As for animals, yes, that’s part of the tragedy. When there’s not enough space for people, then the pets have to stay behind.
over it
Oops….beat me. ;) Thanks for the clarification…yes, I agree that pumping it up to be some sort of breaking news is a bit weak on her part.
By the way….thank you for sharing Noah’s Wish with us…not only have I donated….I am also planning on becoming one of their volunteers. I already am on the Red Cross Volunteer list(Blood Donor, Local Disaster Volunteer). People should remember that money is always the first and best thing that they can provide…but sometimes you can provide more. Just ask.
Midshipman Enfield
I love my dog to tears, but he’s not a person. I feel this way because I have not TOTALLY LOST MY SHIT.
That’s the twattiest thing I’ve read all morning. Ask your pets to reread the post, they’ll probably figure out what John was saying before you do.
StupidityRules
You weren’t allowed to bring pets into the Super Dome, I’m guessing there were people chose go back home again when hearing this or who never went there since they would have had to abandon their pet. That would have been a tough choice for me too.
Tulie
A lot of people don’t evacuate because they have nowhere to take their pets. Happens every hurricane. Hotels won’t take pets, people can’t stomach leaving them behind to fend for themselves. I couldn’t. I don’t see why a reporter talking about it is “jumping the shark”.
I’d be pretty pissed if the reporters covering this were all detached and dispassionate, personally.
Adam
Any money donated to animals is money not donated to people. Sorry, but there you have it. If you have 100 dollars free to donate and you split it down the middle between the Red Cross and PETA, or whatever, you screwed the RC out of 50 bucks. With people dying on the streets in NO, I personally find it verging on contemptible for anyone to give more than a passing thought to the welfare of a cat.
Davebo
I’d just like to say to everyone questioning the coverage of this disaster.
Unlike the Feds, the press have been there since day one. They’re tired, dirty, and probably as depressed as hell.
Cut them a little slack. Overall, the coverage of this event has been phenomenal.
Which I would be willing to bet has a lot to do with John’s negative attitude.
CaseyL
I, too, want to thank John for posting the link to Noah’s Wish. I gave to the RC, the Humane Soc, and to Noah’s Wish.
Animals are like children in that they have little autonomy. Unlike children, they have no legal rights. For those reasons, we owe them a greater duty of care, rather than less, when the going gets tough.
I am not equating humans and non-humans. I’m just saying animals deserve consideration.
Adam
In the current situation animals do not deserve consideration, except in terms of how they might be endangering those folks who haven’t yet been evacuated. After everyone is safely out of NO and has food and water, then, yes, let’s worry about the animals.
bains
Nice gratuitous dig Davebo…
Unlike the Feds, the press was there to profit off of others tragedies, and doing so before day one.
tBone
One of the stories in the papers yesterday mentioned a little girl having to be forcibly separated from her dog as part of the evacuation – she was screaming its name as they carried her away. Incredibly sad.
Nathan Lanier
Forget Gupta, what’s with the Drudge style headlines?
Jim Caputo
Good thing I waited on your clarification. I was going to use words that really hurt.
jobiuspublius
If it motivates people to help … lap dance anyone?
Steve
This is interesting…
http://www.keesler.af.mil/
Keesler which is near Biloxi was hit hard. The General in charge posted an update about how things are for those concerned. This sentence is striking… In addition to families being ok…
He says, “All pets at the Keesler pet shelter are in good health and weathered this extremely dangerous storm safely.”
The Air Force provided a shelter for their service members pets during a storm.
Apparently they were over the top in their planning.

I wonder how many military bases Bob the Rebuild wants to put in the gulf coast.

Well shit. That is sleazy.

John, why do you continously blame Bill Clinton for everything?

And that has those idiots at PETA happy as a clam and a clam has more intellegence then they at PETA do
