According to Lin Manuel Miranda, we all get “the best seat in the house!”
I must admit to having a crush on LMM – with his extraordinary talent and his wonderful spirit and his charming personality. Move over Mnem!
I have pinned this thread in the sidebar for easy access over the long weekend. (It is under Featuring in the sidebar and in the hamburger menu on mobile.)

SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS!!
WaterGirl
Looks like I will have access to Disney+ later today.
I can’t wait to watch this!

This is a bat-signal for Mnem
Catherine D.
Yeah, I signed up for Disney+ a week ago just for this.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
What’s Hamilton?
Kidding. I didn’t sign up for Disney+ just for this, but since I have it, we’re planning to watch it sometime this weekend mostly to see what all the fuss is about. Can I confess that I’ve missed a number of other wildly popular musicals also, such as Phantom, Chicago, Cats or Annie? I do kind of wish I’d seen the local Annie production here some years back that had Wanda Sykes in it.

She’s getting the steel cage ready for the death match. There can be only one! [OK, so I’m mixing pop culture references, so

@Ceci n est pas mon nym:
It’s a small college in upstate New York, I believe. If you’re not from NY, it’s not surprising that you’re unfamiliar with it.
Alison Rose
I’d always wanted to see the show but it wasn’t something I could do, so this will be a good substitute for that experience. Friend added me to her Disney+ account too, so my tickets are on the house, so to speak. Now I’ll finally get all the jokes and quotes!
zhena gogolia
@Ceci n est pas mon nym:
This isn’t much like any of those.
Dorothy A. Winsor
We’re planning to watch this afternoon, and then maybe I’ll join the twitter watch party at 5:30.
zhena gogolia
I’m looking forward to it. But I hate watching opera on streaming, so I’m afraid this will be a little like that. I tried to watch Shostakovich’s Nose the other night and I made it 30 seconds in. I’m hoping Thomas Kail found a way to make it watchable. Normally, translating a theatrical experience onto a little screen doesn’t work.
WaterGirl
@zhena gogolia: If you have Apple TV or maybe even Roku, you should be able to watch on your TV.
Formerly disgruntled in Oregon
Can totally relate to crushing on LMM – he was beautiful on Drunk History.
Formerly disgruntled in Oregon
@Ceci n est pas mon nym: IMHO, one of these is not like the other. Hamilton is in a class of its own.
Having only heard the soundtrack (a few dozen times), I’m really excited to see this!
Be prepared for ear worms, though…
Mike J
Lewis topping the leaderboards in both practice sessions today! F1 is back!
zhena gogolia
@WaterGirl:
I don’t. And my husband is confined to the living room and the TV is upstairs, so we have to watch on the couch. But it wouldn’t make any difference. I don’t like it on a TV screen either. (I guess I was unclear!)
zhena gogolia
@Formerly disgruntled in Oregon:
Between In the Heights and Hamilton, I had a chance to see him up close, and I skipped it. Still kicking myself. But at least I got to meet Obama!

Magnificent!
The Cast! The Orchestra! The Songs!
Had HamilBrekkie this morning.
Had to stop at Intermission with my eyes full of tears and heart filled with awe.
Waded into Act Ii. But so much excellence, again had to pause.
Lives up to the hype and then some.
zhena gogolia
@MazeDancer:
Yeah! I can’t wait. We’re going to watch in the evening.
WaterGirl
@Formerly disgruntled in Oregon: What is Drunk History?
WaterGirl
@zhena gogolia: Ah. You just like it LIVE, not on a screen. Got it!
WaterGirl
@Mike J:
I have no idea what either of this sentences means. I need to get out more.
zhena gogolia
@WaterGirl:
Or just audio. It’s distracting to me to see close-ups of stage performers. On the Met, you can see every false eyelash.
NotMax
Hoping the Hamimaniacs find it satisfyingly entertaining; its appeal has constantly eluded me* so shall passively observe reaction here (don’t have Disney+ anyway).
For sometime afterward (not in the least as it contains spoilers):
Fact-checking ‘Hamilton’ the musical
*Certainly not the first – nor likely the last – pop culture phenomenon to do so.

Comment by Daveed Diggs, who played Thomas Jefferson in the original Broadway production, on the performance linked above. The quotation is from a recent article: https://theundefeated.com/features/five-years-ago-hamilton-turned-a-revolution-into-a-revelation-what-now/

Mnemosyne please come back. Nobody brings the Hamilcrushing like you.

@WaterGirl: Lewis Hamilton is the only black driver in Formula 1 racing, and perhaps the best driver in history.

Ahem. {Neil Young voice}: There is a town in south Ontario/It’s kind of an old industrial shithole with a bunch of drunks around
{/Neil Young voice}
Seriously, though, psyched to watch tonight!
Victor Matheson
I got to see Hamilton on Broadway a couple of years ago with my family. Not the original cast, but still completely awesome.
One very clear memory I have from that day is the woman sitting behind me with her two daughters saying before the show, “Girls, look around you. Here are 1,000 people all having the best day of their lives.” What a great thought from her.
ThresherK
Filming a live stage musical is always tricky. They can’t all be done the same way, even if a method serves one work well. It seems like this was done right and it should be boffo. Looking forward to it.
zhena gogolia
@H.E.Wolf:
I love that performance so much.
WaterGirl
@Mike J: Thank you!
WaterGirl
@H.E.Wolf: Now I’m crying, just reading about it.
Diceros bicornis
But aargh! Subtitles in other languages are not ready yet! My French partner was looking forward to the chance to understand a bit of what I’ve been on about these last few years. Ah well it takes time and skill to translate those lyrics and do it well. We can wait a little longer.
Formerly disgruntled in Oregon
@WaterGirl:
Drunk history is a TV show on Comedy Central. On the show celebrities get drunk and talk about history and then their drunken stories are re-enacted in scenes with other performers.
Here’s a clip on YouTube, from the LMM episode. The full episode is great – it’s on Hulu, I think.

@Citizen_X:
my inlaws live in Hamilton – boy did you get that description right
WaterGirl
@Formerly disgruntled in Oregon: I’ll check out the clip. No Hulu for me. :-( But I do love me some LMM, so thanks for the hot tip.
Shana
@Ceci n est pas mon nym: Don’t worry, Phantom, Cats and Annie are crummy shows. I like Chicago though, and love Hamilton.
Shana
@zhena gogolia: I’m with you on being disappointed by most filmed theater, but NYT, WaPo and the New Yorker have all said it’s a good production of the show, so I’m hoping they’re right.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@Shana: Just finished watching it, and they did an amazing job of it. There’s enough views of the whole stage to appreciate the choreography, and enough medium and close shots that it doesn’t feel like a high-quality bootleg. I only have one small quibble with the editing choices after my first viewing. May find more later, but right now I’m very happy with it.

So for those of us who don’t have Disney+ and weren’t really contemplating getting it:

$6.99/month.
I’m going to watch it on my laptop. I have tested and saw the credits so it works.

Lin Manuel is a goddamn national treasure. What a talent, and also apparently a really nice person.

My wife and daughter — huge Hamilton fans — camped out in our family room for a 2 a.m. (Central) premiere, finally staggering to bed after 4:30 a.m. I caught up with them a few hours later. They were tired, but absolutely delighted to have seen it.
I also want to see Hamilton, but passed on Friday’s dawn patrol and had a good night’s sleep instead. This will be running nonstop on Disney for months on end and I’ll have plenty of time to catch it.

@zhena gogolia:
Thanks!!

True Hamilton story:
After my husband had heard it enough for the lyrics to start resolving into words, he noticed the line in Wait For It: “My grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher”.
Him: Really? Burr’s grandfather was a preacher?
Me: Yes, he was Jonathan Edwards’ grandson.
Him: I didn’t realize he meant THE fire and brimstone preacher!

Why Hamilton is as frustrating as it is brilliant — and impossible to pin down Hamilton is an impossibly slippery text. The arguments over the show are part of what make it great.
Just something else to read and think about. Avalune and I watched it today we loved it. Def plan to watch it again.
Darkrose
I was wondering how well the live performance would translate to screen. Answer: brilliantly.
I’m kind of overwhelmed right now.
Dadadadadadada
After months of manfully resistance, I finally caved and joined Disney+, only so I could watch Hamilton, and my god, it’s fantastic.
zhena gogolia
@Dadadadadadada:
The adaptation is so brilliant.
