You know, when I used the phrase Banana Republicans in the past, I didn’t really think it would come to this:
There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the “Obama problem.” Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic.
America isn’t the Third World. If a military coup does occur here it will be civilized. That it has never happened doesn’t mean it wont. Describing what may be afoot is not to advocate it.
[…]Will the day come when patriotic general and flag officers sit down with the president, or with those who control him, and work out the national equivalent of a “family intervention,” with some form of limited, shared responsibility?
Imagine a bloodless coup to restore and defend the Constitution through an interim administration that would do the serious business of governing and defending the nation. Skilled, military-trained, nation-builders would replace accountability-challenged, radical-left commissars. Having bonded with his twin teleprompters, the president would be detailed for ceremonial speech-making.
I eagerly await the Fonzi of Freedom Nick Gillespie, Matt Welch, and the rest of the Reason crew explaining how it is the folks in the middle who are a threat to Democracy and our freedoms.
And seriously, this person was an official in two previous administrations (Johnson and Carter). At what point does this shit become unacceptable in the village?

This guy was an official in the Johnson and Carter administrations, no less.
He’s obviously been powerslaming the Pat Cadell-crazy juice since the 1970s though.

There’s no link given. Who wrote this piece of anti-American fantasy?
Anon.
Right. They’re actually advocating military coups in the US now, and calling them “civilized”.
Well, it was predictable, at least if you’ve realized that the modern Republicans are essentially a fascist movement. I guess they’re just more pathetic than Hitler, who managed to get elected “legally”.
I think these authoritarian clowns may have forgotten what happened when parts of *Russia’s* military intervened to “solve” their problem with the wildly popular Gorbachev.

The central problem with Wingularity Theory, as it currently stands, is that sometimes stuff like this does make it beyond the Wingnut Event Horizon.

Wow. WTF is right. I’m one of those officers who would be expected to go along with/participate in this coup, and I was much more worried about El Presidente Boosh’s solid rogering of the Constitution than the current occupant, who doesn’t seem to be violating anything as far as I can see. As a matter of fact, I’d like to see the animals who decided the Geneva Conventions were archaic investigated, prosecuted and frog-marched. Baby steps I guess.

This is beyond belief. He is someone who clearly doesn’t believe in the Constitution and the democratic process. That he would advocate a military coup, all the while insisting he is advocating to protect the republic is beyond nonsense.
Where was he when the Bush administration chose to invade Iraq, wasted billions of dollars in the process, did not support the troops because billions of dollars were going to contractors that stole money instead of considering troop safety, tortured, etc.?
Maybe he also should advocate a combined coup with the military and the religious right joining forces to establish a military theocracy, all the while saying they are doing it in the name of democracy.
Can you imagine if progressives had advocated this during the Bush years???? Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, etc. would be going crazy.

At least it’ll be bloodless and civilized, amirite? How Perry knows this, I dunno, but it sure makes me feel better about it.

This, “will the day come when patriotic general and flag officers sit down with the president, or with those who control him,” is a nice touch.
The thirty percenters desperately need to believe they see all the things in Obama that liberals saw in Bush – he’s not that smart, he’s a horrible speaker (except when the telepromter is working), someone else is telling him what to do, etc.
It makes me laugh every time.

I think that Obama is an anathema to these assholes. Everyday that he and his administration exists just ratchets up the hate. As I said in an earlier thread, something seriously fucked up is going to happen in the next couple years. I’m getting the same sort of vibes there were before the Oklahoma City tragedy.
I know the Balloon Juicers joke about the Wingnut Event Horizon and the wingularity, but consider, the last time there was so much right wing hate. The event horizon was crossed and the wingularity occurred at the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

Then, when confronted by his creation, he experiences an immediate change of heart. “Open the goddam door !!”.
In much the same way, are we expected to believe (by virtue of such ridiculous shit articles) that the vast majority of Independents and/or Republican “traitors” who voted for Pres. Obama suddenly went: “OMG, I voted for a BLACK guy !!”
I think not. The crazies are still around 23%. They’re just noisy as shit.

Here’s my prediction, should such an event come to pass – dead generals, dead soldiers, dead wingnuts, dead villagers.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t recall anyone calling for a military overthrow of the Bush administration . . .
How is it possible that anyone who criticized Bush was a traitor to the country and with the terrorists, but the same people can call for a military coup in the name of being patriotic.
As Yakov would say, What a country!
Chuck Butcher
One would have to wonder where the basis for this over-heated imagination came from. I’m real unsure where the Constitutional basis for this coup is, the coup that protects the Constitution.
As far as the Village goes it does pay to remember that the publisher of this tripe is NewsMax, that is who is willing to pay this cretin to type.

Speaking of the crazies, none of them have realized what would happen to the economy should any of their little wet dreams come to full product.

jl
I’m not worried about a military coup. Heck, the military went along with Bush and Cheney, who were going to get all the military killed over paranoid fever dreams and lies.
But, the drift of the wingnuts is ugly.
What I worry about is if the Democrats mess up enough so that these nutballs regain power, that could get ugly. And I would not count on the military to step in to stop them, and would not want the military to step in even then. But, it might be a real mess.
The 75% to 80% of the population that is sane seem to be unswayed by these hateful nutjobs. And they are nutjobs. Seriously fucked up column.
Even scarier than Perry’s column, is the fact that he has an impressive resume which makes his delusional rant all the more depressing.
In addition to his service in the Johnson and Carter administrations which bayville points out, Perry has credentials which one would normally associate with a sane, rational person:
The Associated Press Managing Editors Association named Perry one of the 12 best newsroom managers among the AP’s member newspapers.
He worked as an editor or reporter for several daily newspapers, including the Tampa Tribune, the St. Petersburg Times, the Buffalo Evening News and the Clearwater Sun.
He holds a master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism
He was an academic fellow at the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions in Santa Barbara, Calif.

And also this:
Ani DiFranco: Hello Birmingham
Comrade Mary
My guess is that at least part of The Village will see all this talk as yet another sign that Obama is weak and/or polarizing and/or simply incapable of leading the country.
And they will be concerned. Very, very concerned.
General Winfield Stuck
think it would come to this:
Why? The only thing that has kept this country half way glued together are shared tragedies, usually world wars and the bonding of the last one is wearing off. America has always been two different countries with the one writing the document we live by and the other left seething in resentment because they really really don’t like it, nor believe in many of the tenants forced upon them.
Now Obama comes along and brings out the long held anger partly because of his skin color and partly because he actually believes and pays homage to that document of understanding.
And his is a liberal interpretation of a liberal constitution and it makes the long disgruntled mainly southerners see red and eyeball their guns. It is going to get worse before it gets better, if it gets better, and will start off with little rebellions like a state or two passing a law citing a tenth amendment claim and refuse to go along with a federal mandate. Whether it gets to a civil war I sort of doubt, but who the frack really knows. The 2010 elections will tell us more about how deep this goes, and it promises to be a wingnut freak show like none other so far.
SpotWeld
It was on a recent discussion of the show House that it was mentioned that people suffering from delusions can be confronted with the reality that contradicts their fantasy. It is noted… Logically, you would think that showing someone that their beliefs are wrong would break the delusion — but by definition, delusions aren’t logical. The mind is very facile and will find a way to keep the delusion despite the evidence.
What this article represents is exactly that sort of facility in insanity. Frankly Obama’s presidency (while certainly not perfect) has been better in pretty much every measure aspect for the US than Bush’s when compared to the same time period. Specifically, there has been no terrorists attack such as Bush’s 9/11. In fact recent news shows the arrest of a alleged terrorist.
Obama is not being universally derided and is actually pretty popular. This flies in the face of the far-right fantasy that he would be “boo’d out of office in shame”.
So this new twist is developed, strong (manly) military men are quietly preparing to validate the Right Wing fantasy.
That will fail also.. and a new twist will develop to make the delusion all the more complex.
My guess it’ll be that the US military has been suborned by Communists in league with Iran are selling out the US for um… to sap out precious essences.

I can feel it coming, too. The crazies have been playing it at 11 and are turning it up; it can’t happen to Obama (assuming the Secret Service is both excellent and loyal), so it’s only a matter of where and when. Luckily, most federal “targets” have been hardened after 9/11; I would think OKC can’t happen again.

I am so stunned that i keep reading Perry’s post over and over. Each time i read it i keep thinking it can’t say what it does say. Is this what conservatives think is responsible discourse? Is this what they hope will happen? Is this what they think is responsible discourse? To remove a democratically elected President through a military coup all in the name of saving democracy? I worry how many people will read this and agree. I worry how many conservatives will read this and think this is reasonable. I will wait and see if any conservatives trash his post. I fear I will be waiting a very long time. It is one thing to oppose a President’s policies. It is another thing altogether to believe the path to opposing policy is through a military coup. The opposition is insane.

What worries me more than any entire branch of the military or the Joint Chiefs or whatever staging a coup – most of them seem to possess a deep and abiding faith in civil control of the military, beyond a few wingnuts – is that some isolated unit led by some Ralph Peters-type might mutiny and that the media, being the horde of craven pussies they are, would immediately bend over backwards to welcome our new Blood n’ Guts Overlords. Despite their lack of either popular support, tactical superiority or, you known, legitimacy.
Seriously, a fucking army toilet-digging detail could mutiny at a garrison in Germany and Mark Halperin would be twatting his fealty to our new military ruling junta before they could wipe the shit off their shoes.

@Jack: Yeah, I am probably far too glib. I live in perhaps the most blue part of of the bluest state – and the kids I meet (my kids’ friends) are really smart, earnest, tolerant, nice kids. I would like to think that the next generation as a whole is really like that, which is the sort of sentimental foolishness that I should know better than to indulge in.
What’s more, my kids have Canadian and a European citizenship, and I am on the verge of moving them out of the country for the next few years (for personal and career reasons, not political ones). I do get the feeling, generally, that it may be a good time to take the young ones and scat for a while. Both of my grandfathers were fairly racist ultra-conservative Republicans in their day, and they would be freaked out by what that part of the country has become in the last decade.

Marine Corps! Booyah! They will get it done. They will restore the Christianist Constitutional Republic.
I believe it was Mairne Corps Major General “The Fighting Quaker” and “Old Gimlet Eye” two time Medal of Honor winner Smedley Butler (Major General Sir!, to you) who ratted out some reactionary rich fart coup plotting during the New Deal.
After Bush and Cheney, what military officer in his or her right mind would plot a coup against Obama?
They would have to remove Biden, Pelosi, Byrd, and (Gah!) Hillary too. That would fly with the public.
Then remove Geithner (what would Wall Street say?) Then the turncoat commie Gates (double Gah!, they way he is going after the M-I complex) and then Holder (another one of those people, if you know what I mean). Then Salazar (a double whammy there).
I guess they would put in Boykin, which would turn the US into Iran.
This would make a nice comedy screenplay. I thought of it first, and will sue if any varmints here steal the idea.

In 1964, Rod Serling scripted “Seven Days in May” about an attempted military coup against the President of the United States.
In 1972, Rod Serling scripted “The Man”, a movie about the first black President of the United States.
Today at NewsMax, John L. Perry calls for a military coup against the President of the United States, who happens to be black.

The real coup is going on every day – it’s personhood for corporations, and “free speech” for deceptive ad firms and K-Street.

I am not sure about the idea that ‘nation building’ corrupts US military. If I remember correctly, the Marines, Army and Navy more or less ran Central America for decades, up to the early 1930s. That was mainly for the benefit of US corporations and their local cronies. Cheney had a similar mission in mind for the US military in up to half a dozen middle eastern countries, even though he, or any of his gang, will never admit it.
Been there, done that, and no military coups.
That was where the US modern counter insurgency doctrine was born, and the land forces’ first small wars and counter insurgency manuals were written. That includes the softie socialist DFH side of the Marines and Army postwar occupation doctrines -how to win over the locals so they would cooperate with our programs, regardless of whether the US program for those little countries be for good or ill.

It just reminds me of another Heinlein story- the one where a black woman is elected vice-president of the US, in a ploy to gain votes, and then the President dies. “Of course you never bargained for this, we’ll see to it that a suitable replacement for you is found…” “I’m sure you will. You’re dismissed.”
Heinlein’s female character writing is as insightful as ever (ha!) and bits of it are awful, but when Madam Black President is confronted by a Joint Chief who is having none of it and calls her a n***** wench, it’s the Marine Joint Chief who reaches the guy first, and just about beats him up on the spot (“Down on your knees and beg pardon! El Tiburon nailed it, but I have been thinking this for a while.
There is a sizable segment of the population–and I admit it is apparently bigger, or at least more vocal, than I would have thought–that just cannot deal with the fact that the president is a n-n-n-Negro, and all of this sound and fury is about their extreme gyrations to come up with some reason–any reason–for their extreme discomfiture, anxiety and insecurity other than r-r-r-racism.
That’s why you’re seeing the increasingly outlandish–and contradictory–charges. He’s a communist. He’s a fascist. He’s Hitler. He’s Mao. He’s completely incompetent. He’s a supervillain. They don’t have to make sense. The wingnuts are just trying to shut off the alarm bell coming from deep in the lizard brain. Without confronting the truth that they are (deeply, deeply) uncomfortable because he’s black.
mclaren
Moonbatting Average mentioned:
Stephen Hawking explained that back in 1972. When a charged particle-antiparticle pair appear at the edge of an event horizon due to the intensity of the gravitational field of the black hole, one of the pair of particle disappears into the black hole but the other particle zips away. This leads to the appearance of radiation emitted from the event horizon.
As we now know, all black holes must emit radiation from their event horizons. Eventually, this radiation saps the mass-energy of the black hole, and it evaporates.
Transferring these insights to Wingularity Theory, we deduce that sense and nonsense appears spontaneously at the edge of a Wingularity. The sensible stuff disappears into the black hole of Republican looniness, while the nonsense gets emitted. Thus, Wingularities emit a constant stream of nonsense, eventually weakening the Republicans to the point where the entire Wingularity evaporates.

But this would mean common sense exists in the heart of the wingularity. That would be the end of the universe as we know it.

It’s not sense-nonsense pairs that appear on the event horizon of the Wingularity, but random, undifferentiated statements and their converses. I can’t seem to find a thing about this guy that doesn’t somehow refer back to his New Smacks bio.
So “award winning newspaper editor” can meaning anything, including winning Employee of the Month at aforementioned New Smacks.
And being on the White House “staff” certainly doesn’t automatically make one an “official.” The latter would normally exercise some of the intrinsic power of office, while the former could be staffing the Xerox machine.
But hey, what’re the chances of a wingnut having an inflated/dishonest resume, eh?

Re: article here: http://www.newsmax.com/john_perry/obama_military_coup/2009/09/29/266012.html, I am just curious. At what point did you decide to simple abandon all pretense of an allegiance to the Constitution and America, and opt for openly declaring support for treason and a military take over of the civilian government. Did you have editorial sessions and toss the idea around and get a consensus? Is it just that you hate the idea of the rule of law as founded in a Constitution, and the idea of a Republic in which the citizens have some vestige of control over government anathema?
This column advocates treason.
Nothing more, nothing less. I assume that like the Facebook poll that was up this past Sunday into Monday you will next just be openly calling for the assassination of President Obama?

I see plenty of folks beat me to the Smedley Butler references, but I’d just like to add that the names of the banksters which came up in the Congressional investigation are *still* classified to this day. I wonder how many of them have descendants who are donors to AEI and Reason and so on?
And yes, this kind of talk did go on among “respectable” “prolife” conservative intellectuals back in the Clinton and Carter days, but not at quite this fever pitch – and without the ability to hyperlink it, either. I gotta try to get to the local religious college library periodical archives this weekend with a portable scanner and see if I can dredge up any ripe ones from the sewers of “The Wanderer” &c that they have in the basement there…

Interesting – under insane bush, the military did, in fact, rebel. When asshole cheney wanted a study completed by the purple suits out lining a nuke strike against Iran, all the Colonels and Lt. Colonels threatened to resign in mass. The general staff then had to inform asswipe that this option was off the table unless they wanted to handle this mess.

Isn’t the question of whether the “Constitution” is being violated a matter for the courts, particularly the Supreme Court? Isn’t that the recourse for such questions? Not a matter for wingnuts to decide?
4tehlulz
@DBrown: Threatening resignation != coup d’etat
DBrown
@4tehlulz: I said rebelled, not a coup. These were our top non-general level officers refusing direct orders. That is a big thing and unheard of. Consider that this was all the senior staff for the Joint Chiefs (a few hundred officers from all the services) – that was, is and always will be a big deal that this occured and shows how bad bush was and how extreme and insane cheney was and still is. These officers are very rightwing yet even they were pushed over the edge.

@DBrown: cite, please. I’m skeptical because refusing to obey a legal order, which that clearly was, is an offense which is subject to court-martial.

Perry is under the misconception that our military is a box of toy soldiers to be used by ill raised children having a temper tantrum. I did send that in a letter to the ombudsman.
It never ever dawned on Perry that republicans were soundly rejected because they were inept, poor performers and who’s ideology is not compatible with a thriving nation. That would require Perry to mature into an adult and mature adults is not something today’s conservatives know anything about.

It is simply amazing to me that Perry and his ilk think that all it will take is a few disaffected generals to order the armed forces to depose the President and it will happen.
What is more likely to happen is that any such treasonous generals will be arrested by their subordinates and, depending on how things play out, might wind up being the featured guests before some firing squads.

Yeah, they forget the number of Hispanic and African-American soldiers in our military. These guys have big guns, too, and know how to use them. I think these fantasizers think the military is homogeneously (sp?) white and conservative, but the rank and file are not – and the officer corps is becoming more diverse as well.

Winfield Stuck,
I think it was the Talbot book, BROTHERS, that went into the story behind why JFK allowed the filming of “Seven Days In May” in the White House.
Meanwhile, why would the military want to take out Obama? He’s giving them everything they want? They’ve got no motivation.

@gnomedad: This made me guffaw loudly enough that I think the neighbors heard me, through closed windows.
And Newsmax took the article down, eh? Interesting. What are the chances they did it because their feelings were getting hurt by all the e-mails objecting to it? I doubt that. I should think the editors there would be tickled to put up an article that makes a big splash and brings lots of eyes to its site. I get the feeling that some of those eyes belonged to people with dark suits and badges.

@demimondian: I tried to post some links but they went into moderation. Do a google for “bracing the brass on iran” which isn’t quite the article I was thinking of, but I’ve got to get work done this morning…

“…shouldn’t there be like a, you know, good reason to just toss the election results from last year out the window and put General Fiddle Faddle or Colonel Tootie Frootie in charge? No domestic unrest because of this action? What to do with all those very angry liberals and Democrats? It might be emotionally satisfying for some to see our opponents marched off to those detention camps Haliburton built in Utah and Nevada, but gawd, we’d never hear the end of it.
Perry is an old man – served in the Johnson Administration and his bio says he was one of the first journalists allowed into Russia following the death of Stalin. He has got to be in his mid 80’s. He talks of the military performing what amounts to a “family intervention” to remove the duly elected, constitutionally legitimate, president of the United States.
I think his own family should heed that advice and retire this fellow before he hears the laughter directed his way for being such a monumental ass.”

@Comrade Darkness: Yeah, it got out.
Your citations strike me as profoundly unconvincing; not only are they dated almost a year apart, they propose vastly different scenarios. Worse, in the case of the Think Progress citation, in fact, we have a story of a reporter repeating a rumor she heard of disagreements within the Pentagon. It almost looks like TP was trying to rationalize the fact that the “massive attack on Iran” never happened, rather than saying “Gosh, it looks like Hirsch may have wrong.”

Like some other posters, I have a lot of military time (retired MSG). And usually voted Republican. And will hold my nose and do so in the future as long as the alternative is someone like Nancy Pelosi. Anything that p!$$3$ off Michael Moore can’t be all bad.
But I don’t see anything to justify the vitriol against Obama. Health care is hugely complex and a lot of money is involved. What’s now going on looks like normal horse trading and jockeying for position to me. Nobody rooted in reality expects it to be settled in a few months. We’ll be lucky to get something in his first term.
But I have already decided which side I will join if the Wingnut Apocalypse comes to pass. And it won’t be with them. And unlike most of them I have carried a rifle.

Sounds like the planned over throw of Roosevelt in the 30’s by supporters of the 3rd Reich:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot (oh my! is the neutrality of history being disputed???)
The right wing, fascist, fundie, white supremacist wingnuts need to realize that in a nation of 300 million people, they are a small and diminishing minority and they are not the only ones who believe in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 14th amendments and there are some folks who can actually *read* the Declaration of Independence all the way to the end and understand we didn’t build this country so United Health could kill grandma.
Any attempt to overthrow a president, “bloodlessly” or otherwise, who was legally elected by a significant majority of the nation will fail.
The fact that the discussion in the wingnut-o-sphere has degraded to this level just shows how threatened the fascist movement in this country actual is by the overwhelming support the people show this president. 95% of the people in this country are increasingly suffering at the hands of the other 5%, that’s unsustainable.

Since NewsMax has decided to delete the article, here is the Google Cache
And because that will eventually go away the remainder of this post is a copy and paste so the record is preserved:
There is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the “Obama problem.” Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic.
America isn’t the Third World. If a military coup does occur here it will be civilized. That it has never happened doesn’t mean it wont. Describing what may be afoot is not to advocate it. So, view the following through military eyes:
# Officers swear to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Unlike enlisted personnel, they do not swear to “obey the orders of the president of the United States.”
# Top military officers can see the Constitution they are sworn to defend being trampled as American institutions and enterprises are nationalized.
# They can see that Americans are increasingly alarmed that this nation, under President Barack Obama, may not even be recognizable as America by the 2012 election, in which he will surely seek continuation in office.
# They can see that the economy — ravaged by deficits, taxes, unemployment, and impending inflation — is financially reliant on foreign lender governments.
# They can see this president waging undeclared war on the intelligence community, without whose rigorous and independent functions the armed services are rendered blind in an ever-more hostile world overseas and at home.
# They can see the dismantling of defenses against missiles targeted at this nation by avowed enemies, even as America’s troop strength is allowed to sag.
# They can see the horror of major warfare erupting simultaneously in two, and possibly three, far-flung theaters before America can react in time.
# They can see the nation’s safety and their own military establishments and honor placed in jeopardy as never before.
So, if you are one of those observant military professionals, what do you do?
Wait until this president bungles into losing the war in Afghanistan, and Pakistan’s arsenal of nuclear bombs falls into the hands of militant Islam?
Wait until Israel is forced to launch air strikes on Iran’s nuclear-bomb plants, and the Middle East explodes, destabilizing or subjugating the Free World?
What happens if the generals Obama sent to win the Afghan war are told by this president (who now says, “I’m not interested in victory”) that they will be denied troops they must have to win? Do they follow orders they cannot carry out, consistent with their oath of duty? Do they resign en masse?
Or do they soldier on, hoping the 2010 congressional elections will reverse the situation? Do they dare gamble the national survival on such political whims?
Anyone who imagines that those thoughts are not weighing heavily on the intellect and conscience of America’s military leadership is lost in a fool’s fog.
Will the day come when patriotic general and flag officers sit down with the president, or with those who control him, and work out the national equivalent of a “family intervention,” with some form of limited, shared responsibility?
Imagine a bloodless coup to restore and defend the Constitution through an interim administration that would do the serious business of governing and defending the nation. Skilled, military-trained, nation-builders would replace accountability-challenged, radical-left commissars. Having bonded with his twin teleprompters, the president would be detailed for ceremonial speech-making.
Military intervention is what Obama’s exponentially accelerating agenda for “fundamental change” toward a Marxist state is inviting upon America. A coup is not an ideal option, but Obama’s radical ideal is not acceptable or reversible.
Unthinkable? Then think up an alternative, non-violent solution to the Obama problem. Just don’t shrug and say, “We can always worry about that later.”
In the 2008 election, that was the wistful, self-indulgent, indifferent reliance on abnegation of personal responsibility that has sunk the nation into this morass.

Mr. Cole,
A classic example of why I’m an independent. A Republican advocating a military coup when they don’t get their own way’ and what does the opposition do? You don’t have the guts to include the name of the writer so I can confirm this for myself. Crappy reporting and downright wimpy. I agree this is treasonous, but being cowardly isn’t the answer either.
