Weird reasons, but, whatever:
Smerconish did so by reading a couple paragraphs from his pending op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
“I’ve decided,” he said. “My conclusion comes after reading the candidates’ memoirs and campaign platforms, attending both party conventions, interviewing both men multiple times, and watching all primary and general election debates.
“John McCain is an honorable man who has served his country well. But he will not get my vote. For the first time since registering as a Republican 28 years ago, I’m voting for a Democrat for president.
“I may have been an appointee in the George H.W. Bush administration, and master of ceremonies for George W. Bush in 2004, but last Saturday I stood amidst the crowd at an Obama event in North Philadelphia,” says the Republican.
In PA, every vote counts.
Just Some Fuckhead
I still find Smerconish execrable.
kommrade jakevich
Oh come on Cole. You don’t expect him to write: "I admit it! I can’t stand to watch McPOW and The Moose-Stepping Mistress gang-bang the dead burnt corpse of the GOP another minute! I just. Can’t. Do it!"
Of course, an unpleasant part of me wonders if some of the people fleeing the McPalin plan to spend four years bewailing the fact that they once supported Obama and telling everyone who’ll listen that Obama personally betrayed them [place back of hand to forehead, swoon gracefully onto the couch]. And this is why you can’t trust liberals.
RSA
I ran down a short list of conservatives who favor or lean toward Obama in a recent blog post (including JC, as it happens).
Comrade Jake
Well, at least he didn’t say "I’m voting for the ni**er". I’m not sure quite what to make of that post over at Sully’s blog.
Smerconish seems to be one of the few right-leaning talking heads on the teevee who seems pretty reasonable from time to time. He doesn’t seem to have any of the foam-at-the-mouth DNA that Bachmann exhibits, for example. I think we have to take that as a good thing.

Every vote counts, indeed. I suspect, however, that Smerconish will be one of those people in 2012 who will pen long diatribes about how he thought Obama was one person and immediately felt betrayed by him on Jan. 21, 2009 and so it is regrettably necessary to pound him into dust at this point.
I do have something in common with Smerconish, though. I’m voting for a Republican in a local race this time around. Trust me, I’m as surprised as you are.
Fulcanelli
Every vote does count, especially in PA.
But the twisted thing with wingnuts is that even if Obama doesn’t go as left as they fear on policy, etc. because of the need to compromise or even cave for some unforseen reason, they’ll still howl and grunt like wild stuck pigs: See he can’t be trusted!!! We told you so!!! Impeach!!!
He’s damned if he does, and damned if he doesn’t… So fuck ‘ em, damn the torpedoes.
O.T. He’s gonna have one very busy DOJ, by the looks of the shit we’re starting to see in the news. Can’t wait to hear the bawling about illegal wiretapping when it starts flushing out the rabid right homegrown terrorists.

@Fulcanelli:
In all candor, I hope we don’t hear any bawling about illegal surveillance under Obama’s DOJ. Illegal is illegal. Let the FBI do its job old-school, and let the NSA go back to tracking real threats instead of boogeymen under the bed.

True story:
Last night, I got a call from a dear friend in Lousisiana. This guy is old school Louisiana. The word ni**er rolls off his tongue way too easily.
Let’s call him "Joe". And we’ll call me, "Eddie".
Joe: I have a problem.
Eddie: What’s up?
Joe: Did you watch the debate?
Eddie: Yeah?
Joe: What did you think?
Eddie: I thought Obama wiped the floor with him, but I’ve thought that all three debates. You?
Joe: (long pause) Me, too.
Eddie: So what’s the problem?
Joe: I think I have to vote for Obama. McCain is a douchebag.
Eddie: So what’s the problem?
Joe: I’m a Republican.
Eddie: So what?
Joe: So I’ve never voted for a Democrat. And I’ve never voted for an African American.
Eddie: Did you just say "African American?"
Joe: Yeah. I know, I know…. But here’s the thing… If I’m gonna vote him, that means I want him to be president… which means I can’t just be calling the president a ni**er.
Eddie: I’m getting some ice skates, cuz hell must be freezing over.
We then spoke for another 20 minutes about how Obama actually excites him about politics. How Obama gives him hope. This is a 52 year old, Louisiana born and bred, lifelong Republican, racist redneck who is voting for Obama.
He’s got money, too, so I’m working him to donate. He’s not there yet, but I think he’s really going to vote for Obama.
I think there is a huge hidden vote for Obama. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but I’m hoping.

All of you America Last dead-enders must really be drowning in vast oceans of Kool-Aid to think this pointless endorsement has any significant impact.
A small reminder, once again: the ONLY endorsement that matters, the ONLY poll that counts is the one on November 4th. John McCain and Sarah Palin are closing in for the kill and your flop sweat-drenched desperation has become embarrassingly obvious.

Well, nitpicking a little, but really, there isn’t a place in the country where every vote is not important. Unfortunately, there are probably places were every vote isn’t going to be counted. For all the GOP kabuki re voting fraud, they’ve done a pretty good job of hurting people’s ability to cast their vote.
So, when I keep hearing how worried people are about Democrats being complacent because of the polling numbers, I find it a little hard to believe that people will forget how the GOP disenfranchised and stole their way to victory in 2000, and again apparently in 2004. Now, maybe independents and recent Democratic converts might not feel the threat of stolen elections, but I sure do. I see what is going on at the DoJ and the goons coming out for conservatives and I am deeply concerned about having the vote be stolen, AGAIN. You think this talk of "complacency" is a front for the deeper concern, that our election process no longer even approximates a real democracy? That there is no way Democrats can win the presidency and larger majorities, because the GOP really has rigged the system?
Just Some Fuckhead
Mrs. Fuckhead and I were sitting in our easy chairs this morning in our typical Saturday morning routine when the dog came up and nuzzled into my side. "If you’ve got something to say, say it." I commanded. He whined at me. So I went back to ignoring him. He nuzzled me again and I repeated my command. Then he let loose with a torrent of barking, asking to be let out back. I walked with him to the back porch to let him out and he shot out as fast as I could open the sliding glass door. Turns out the damned cat had caught and trapped another small rabbit on the back porch.
The dog saves another rabbit.

The robocalls from the McCain campaign are truly despicable. At a time when right wingers are calling Obama a terrorist, a communist, McCain throws gasoline on the fire. It’s difficult to imagine anything much more irresponsible, playing on the countries fears at a time like this for purely partisan gain. I thought I couldn’t get much angrier at the Republican party, but I may have been wrong. I am scared there may be violence, and if there is, I doubt I’ll ever forgive the GOP. From the McCain campaign:

Smerconish makes me cringe, but hey, if he is seeing the light and wants to support our team, then … welcome aboard.
The next couple weeks are going to see a tsunami of endorsements for Obama, that’s my hunch. We just got our sample ballot yesterday and my wife and I spent an hour going over all the amendments. Some of them are pretty good, while others are pretty fucked up and/or misleading.
What was your take on Amendment 1? Seemed like a bad idea in this house. Amendment 2 is simply disgusting (the wording even rules out any kind of rights under a civil union). The rest are pretty environmentally friendly, and I even like the jist of Amendment 8.

@ Incertus:
I forgot how convoluted Wasserman-Schultz’s district is (although Wexler’s is a little strange, too). Regarding the amendments…
#1 is sort of convoluted but from reading the full text it seeks to allow illegal immigrants to own land and pass it on in inheritance. The state constitution currently prohibits that, and this amendment would strike that language.
#3 is VERY important, because it seeks to encourage people making energy and safety improvements on their homes. Currently, adding a renewable energy source or upgrading your hurricane protection adds to the "value" of your home and raises your taxes. This would eliminate that and not penalize people for performing such upgrades.
#4 is also important because it will allow land set aside for conservation (real conservation, not sticking 2 cows on there for the tax break) to be tax exempt. It also redefines what constitutes eligible land.
#6 is similar to #4, but for waterfront property and also would make such property being used for commercial purposes taxable.
So, on #1 and #2 I would recommend voting "NO", but on all the others I would definitely recommend voting "YES".
Comrade Jake
@Atanarjuat:
So I’ll take it as a "yes" that Atanarjuat is Muslim/Arab/terrorist for "douchebag". Thanks for playing.

Stolen brazenly from WashingtonMonthly.
I highlighted that one sentence for two reasons: One, it contains the essential truth of the scam, which is,
But, two, even this excellent report (from ABC News, of all places) gets a key element wrong, and it’s an element that is important to understanding the scam: The forms turned in by ACORN are not voter registrations, they are applications for registration. No registration happens until a county recorder validates and enters the registration onto the rolls. And the invalid applications were mostly identified by ACORN when they were turned it, which is what the regulations require: Note any irregularities, and most importantly, turn them in, because the officials don’t want ACORN or any organization filtering the applications.
Make sure you know the facts of this story and refute the scam with facts at every opportunity. Write letters to the newspaper, make phone calls, tell the true story.

I don’t care what might happen in 2012. Right now, every conservative talk radio host who either endorses Obama or at least blasts the weakness and phoniness of the McCain/Palin ticket is a Win.
Consider: Despite the supposed reluctance of Hillary supporters to back Obama, Democrats are far more unified than are Republicans, who are having to engage in soul searching over the obvious failure of Republican policies and the obvious fact that no matter how "honorable" and "experienced" McCain is, he has shown that he is essentially clueless when it comes to undertanding what is happening to the economy, the issue that concerns most voters.
And no matter how hard he tries to dance around it, the plain fact is that McCain’s economic advisers either helped engineer the financial metldown or tried to get away with insulting voters for not drinking the GOP Kool-Aid and accepting the lie that happy days were just around a Republican corner
Worse, it is becoming more and more clear that while Sarah Palin is a great GOP attack dog, she (like McCain) doesn’t have the least understanding of anything even related to national economic issues.

The Chicago Tribune endorsement could be really big. This is the first Democrat it has ever endorsed for president in its 161-year history. It goes back to the days of the Whigs and the Know-Nothings.

Amendment 1 would make the following change:
You may be right that it applies to illegal aliens as well as foreign nationals in general since the specific language is aliens ineligible for citizenship. Currently, the legislature can create rules or regulations that govern such activity – this seeks to eliminate that, which I think is a terrible idea.
Frankly, I think part of the problem we have with real estate in South Florida is too much foreign ownership. With the dollar being so weak, a lot of the property here is being bought up by foreigners because they are the only ones that can afford it. Floridians need to be able to afford to live in Florida first and foremost before worry about whether a bunch of wealthy South Americans and Europeans can afford their vacation homes.

@OriGuy:
One thing that I find interesting is how some conservatives and talk show hosts bend over backwards to ignore the support that Obama is winning. These pundits and media people are trying hard to push the fantasy that real Americans support McCain and dirty liberals and terrorist enablers support Obama.
For example, one of the talk show hosts on AM 640 KFI here in Southern California (the biggest English language talk radio station in the market) made a big deal about how the LA Times and Washington Post had endorsed Obama, and mockingly noted how this was to be expected, because after all these are liberal papers. However, he did not mention the Tribune, but immediately lurched into his "opinion" that newspapers should not endorse presidential candidates in order to keep their news gathering side "objective."
By the way, another host on this station, Bill Handel, is notably disgusted with the incompetence of the Republicans and is particularly galled by the ignorance and unreadiness of Sarah Palin. But he regularly gets hammered by callers who insist that Republicans should be supported because of their pro-American values, without regard to their ability to govern with any semblance of competence.
jcricket
Why is this even news? Republicans have made an art form of claiming that Dems are out of touch with America or not winning or whatever, when the opposite is true.
On issue after issue, and in increasing amounts recently, the public agrees with Dems. And Dems are winning when they make it clear, "you don’t have to become a Democrat, you already are. It’s the Republicans who are out of step with you".
I can’t imagine it’s a good long-term electoral strategy when you must lie about your opponents and hide your true beliefs to win.

Now there’s a vision of America Osama Bin Laden would approve of. You sure the Republican party isn’t secretly working with Bin Laden to make his warped dreams for the land of "infidels" come true? Now, I’m puzzled as to why people would flee from approbation, but there are more important things to worry about now, like how much champagne to order for an Obama victory party on November 5th.
And I think the fast runner (fascinating film by the way, the atarnajuat troll here ruins the memory of a good thing) should focus on whether Palin will be facing impeachment for ethical violations once her ticket has lost the presidential race. So many things to think about…
