I did some local traveling this weekend. Met up with some old friends. Ate and drank too much! Slept too little.
So, I’m too tired and hungover to manage much of a post, but I can see one is sorely needed. Also, here’s a cool old-school takeout bag for your consideration.
Open thread!

Do people still call them doggie bags?

I went to the Georgia Bulldog National Championship Celebration yesterday!!!!

My wife and I do, and I’ve never owned a dog.
Names stick to things. That rectangular gizmo in your pocket that does a jillion different tasks is still called a ‘phone’ even though that’s probably not even its main use for most people anymore.

That *is* a cool old school doggie bag.

@Suzanne: How are you doing after your terrifying night a few days ago? Is life returning to normal?
Yarrow
I got hit in the head and think I have a mild concussion.
JPL
@Yarrow: What? How did that happen?
Baud
@JoyceH:
Oh, I never thought of that one.
Baud
@Yarrow:
Whoa.

Staying home. 2 relatives in 2 different households tested positive this week. I have allergy symptoms and a headache. Tomorrow I will use one of my home tests before going to work on Tuesday. Pretty sure it is allergies but it’s a precaution. I did go pick up a prescription wearing a tight n95 and Publix grocery pharmacy had lots of home Covid tests in stock. Walgreens had them on line on Friday but hard to find. I think supplies are starting to show up.
Yarrow
@JPL: Completely random. Went for a walk after a very long day with my dad. Walked through a park, was on the sidewalk so not in anyone’s way. Kid was throwing something to his friend who missed catching it and it hit me at high velocity in the back of the head. I knew it wasn’t good. Went home and iced but the dizziness started up after a bit. All symptoms on the very mild side of concussion protocols but they’re definitely there.
raven
@Baud: hahahahahaha!
zhena gogolia
@Yarrow: Oh, God. Don’t you think you maybe should see a doc?
raven
@Yarrow: Something?
Suzanne
@JPL: Normal-ish, I guess. We had an insurance adjuster and a door sales guy come out on Friday. Insurance adjuster said that everything permeable in the path that the guy took is okay to be considered a loss because of the blood. So that is good. So now we are okay to dispose of the stuff that got destroyed. That will maybe require a junk removal service because some of it is furniture. The door guy was more of a disappointment, he said that it would be June and more likely September before we could get a new door. So we are looking for someone else. But we don’t really want to have any tradespeople in the house until after this Omicron wave chills out.
Mr. Suzanne is still having a hard time sleeping but his mood is improving. The police officer said that the warrant for the dude’s arrest has been approved by the DA’s office, but that he hasn’t been arrested yet. I don’t know how long arresting someone typically takes.
Suzanne
@Yarrow: Shit, yo….. can you go to an ED and get checked out?
JPL
@Yarrow: Maybe you should see a medical professional, just to see if you should be doing something else. It doesn’t sound good.
Yarrow
@zhena gogolia: I’m not going near an ER or Urgent Care right now unless it’s an absolute emergency. From what I’ve read they’ll want to do an MRI and that means a hospital and nope. I had someone monitor me and I never lost consciousness or lucidity (ha ha – insert joke here). Symptoms mild on the concussion symptoms charts. I can function but there are things I’m not doing, like bending over to pick up something off the floor because moving my head like that will kick off some feelings of instability. It’s less dizziness now (been a few days) than instability. From following the charts I think I’m okay. The general advice is to rest, which is what I’ve been doing. But I’ve been doing it for several days so I’m starting to get grumpy about it.
HinTN
@Suzanne: Red beans here on this snowy day. Yes, the house smells good. Rice coming soon.

First order of business for the “moderate Republican” is to engineer a big, stupid culture war with public schools over masks.
He’s planning on campaigning against public schools for the next 4 years. I hope the public school parents who voted for him are excited about their schools turning into GOP campaign headquarters for the duration. Hopefully he can gin this up enough so there will be crowds of screeching Trump supporters disrupting every school board meeting.
These people are just exhausting. It’s never, ever some practical assistance or actual “idea”. It’s always this stupid bullshit. They’ll be begging to go back to a governor who lets school boards and principals run public schools after 4 years of this.
WaterGirl
Boy, that “doggie bag” brings back memories!

@raven: Not exactly sure what it was. Something the kids were playing with and throwing around. Roundish but not a ball. It was hard and it hurt.
WaterGirl
@Yarrow: oh, no!
I got hit in the head really hard with a volleyball once. I didn’t feel well, sick to my stomach, but I was playing volleyball on a sand court in the hot sun and the concussion thing never even occurred to me.
The ball hit shockingly hard. So I feel for you. I bet the kids felt terrible.
raven
@Yarrow: Damn
HinTN
@raven: We’ve got a local pork producer that makes excellent andouille, so that was an easy call.
WaterGirl
@Yarrow: @Suzanne: With Covid, it might be smarter to just follow the concussion protocol.
STAY AWAY FROM SCREENS, stay away from bright lights, noise and lots of activity, make sure someone checks on you regularly.
These days it can be hard to know what to do. ?♀️
edit: I see that you are in camp “fuck no, I do not want to spend hours and hours in a Covid pit”.
I think I would make the choice you are making.

@Quinerly: I watched some of that sad rally last night, thru a humor filter. Google up those “Blacks for Trump” t-shirts seen on some folks behind him….there’s a website on them which I won’t post here. It’s far right sovereign citizen stuff.
Nice, huh?

@HinTN: years ago, l hosted a Red Beans and Rice party every Mon (traditionally in NOLA Red Beans and Rice was cooked on laundry day… Which was Mon) during Mardi Gras season… From first Mon after Epiphany until Mon before Fat Tues. EVERY MONDAY my house for those weeks for 7-8 years running. 10-20 neighborhood folks. People would bring sides. I also started doing an old school different “guest” cocktail every Mon with the RB&R. Think Sazeracs, St. Charles Cocktails, French 75s…Fun times with highend booze and peasant food.
raven
@HinTN: I’ll bet it’s good. I don’t eat beef or pork so Traders Chicken andouille has to do.
raven
@Quinerly: It also is cooked on Monday because they use the sunday hambone!
Suzanne
@WaterGirl: Potentially, yeah.
That’s what makes this whole thing hard: weighing risks against one another. I kept musing on that yesterday while I was at the grocery store and it was really crowded. I’m risking Covid, but if I don’t go, I’m risking my family being without nutritious food in a snowstorm.
Yarrow
@WaterGirl: This is what I decided. I had someone monitor me. I never even got above the lowest level of the mild concussion symptom list so I didn’t get too worried. My ear is still ringing, which is annoying. I might have to see someone if it doesn’t resolve. It was better this morning, which was encouraging.
The whole thing was just so random. I was minding my own business, having a nice walk after a hard days and BAM! Something hits me in the back of the head. Talk about an adrenaline spike. And I’ve been dealing with the resulting effects ever since. Ugh.
Another Scott
@Yarrow: Ouch!
When I was in college, I ended up playing a game of pickup football one winter. Somehow I ended up with the ball and the guy tackling me grabbed the hood of my hoodie and spun me around and my head bounced pretty hard on the frozen ground. I saw stars, but didn’t lose consciousness. It was kinda scary (and back then we didn’t know as much as now). I didn’t seem to have any ill effects, but I was in my early 20s then…
It’s good you’re keeping an eye on it, and good you’re staying away from hospitals unless you need it. But if you do need to go, then go!
Good luck!
Cheers,
Scott.

Taking measurements, on the way home from another job, (no charge), making a quote, ( no charge) ,
new Door and doorframe, ( if needed) is at most a 6 hour job, including anchoring deep into the studs, including spray foam insulation,
Then maybe 4 hours for door trim and paint, all with the door area mostly open.
When I was a contractor, it was a “priority job”, but the homeowner would have to deal with the insurance.
Same with furnaces being out, major appliances, water leaks, etc, they all bumped other reno/construction work, and with good communication, my other Customers all understood.

My mom and I went to see the symphony today and we sat next to (seats between us per the bubble rules) a delightful man who is the same age as my mom. My mom used to play in the symphony and he has been on the board for decades so it was like old home week with N95s.
We were talking about musicians and conductors and I showed him a photo of a guest conductor I particularly liked. He said “I’m a gay man so I usually remember the good looking ones”. My mom chimed in with “ well we have that in common”.
After much laughter and conversation, numbers were exchanged and we have a new symphony friend. He is widowed and doesn’t have children so the pandemic has been tough on him. I think he likes the idea of a family of crazy, music freak friends.

In May, I ordered a pair of double prehung doors for my dining room – the housemate’s room is the previous formal living room. I had bought a pair on Craigslist when they moved in, which were pretty sad, floppy, and too big for the space so there was no trim on one side. Housemate’s husband was high on something and rather than go for that last piece of drywall tried to fill it in out of a large bucket of vinyl wall patch – spackle?
Anyway, I digress. Lowes.com had the door in stock” but could deliver until October.

Sort of like a jet exhaust. Had my hearing checked and at 3K hertz I have zero hearing on the right side from the explosion. Good times. Hope yours goes away.

When I was a much younger man and a callow youth, I worked in a lot of back-of-the-house restaurant jobs. As recent as the 1980s, they were still “doggie bags.” And most had doggies on them. It was considered the ultimate low-life inbred gesture for a restaurant patron to ask for anything on their plate except for the meat to be put in a doggie bag. “To go” was for Chinese food and fast food. At one place where I worked that served steak and lobster, as dishwasher I had the important task of separating out the left-over meat and lobster so that all of the pet owning workers could split it up at the end of the night. The assumption that the left-overs were solely just for pets was so ingrained that if a server or busser would rush back into the kitchen looking for a plate they had brought back a few moments ago because the diner had suddenly asked for a doggie bag, together we would go through my scrap bucket and find a leftover piece of meat that looked like theirs. It was only for their dog anyway, right? How our perceptions of eating out have changed….
