I’m on vacay, as the kids say, so that means I am running around doing all the shit I should have done the past few months. Like installing the Blink doorbell I bought in August which has sat on the mantle for four months as a static display of my uselessness, putting some shims in the posts in the basement, giving all my knives a good sharpening, examining the cupboard for super expired shit, and shitposting on twitter.

Doing what I used to get paid to do: year-end tax planning. The $7,500 Federal tax credit for buying a qualifying (i.e., non-Tesla, cuz nobody else has sold 200,000 units yet) electric vehicle is non-refundable and doesn’t carry over, so if I don’t have enough income to use it all I will need to create some.

Long morning walk, brief check-in at work (I’m supposedly off, except for next Wednesday, til January, but will likely log on to avoid 450 unread emails greeting me). Did my year-end donations, strategizing when I can retire maybe. Yesterday I scheduled an MRI (spit; I HATE MRIs, but it’s the next step in a possible medical intervention). Probably going to do some cooking tomorrow (bolognese sauce, a couple of pots of beans, maybe some bread). Wishing I could find at-home tests, but there are none to be found. I don’t feel sick, and I have been around exactly one person in the past week, so I’m not particularly nervous; several nights of four-ish hours of sleep would explain a lot. Got a fabulous t-shirt from a work friend (it says “queer nerd” on it). Gonna read some Adam Schiff.
S-cat, so sorry you had to say goodbye to your friend.

Same. I just got out of work. They let us leave early and we’re closed tomorrow. I am not leaving the house until I have to go back to work on Monday. Dad is going to the step kids and step grandkids for Christmas. I am not even a little bit interested in that.
The big plans are color my hair and put up new curtains. And I’m not promising both of those will be done. The hair for sure; the grey roots are 1/2 inch long. But the curtains? Maybe.

I looked at the huge Amish turkey breasts at the store this morning and decided that I would skip the turkey and just make the stuffing. So my Christmas Eve dinner will be my mom’s recipe for stuffing – all the other recipes are imposters – and my orange-cranberry relish. And some kalamata olives.
That covers all the major food groups. Fruit, sugar, salt and stuffing.
Roger Moore
@SpaceUnit:
Yeah, but the rarity of white Christmases on the Front Range is more about dryness than warmth. It’s not unusual for it to be cold enough to snow on Christmas but too dry. Of course it’s also common enough for it to be shirtsleeve weather. That said, I know there was a white Christmas- or at least a Christmas with lots of snow on the ground- in 2006. I went back to visit my parents for Christmas that year, and there were two big storms. Here was my car on the 21 Dec 2006.

Technically I’m “working” through the end of the week, but aside from wrapping up a few things, I’m spending this week and next essentially moving back into my house.
They’ve finished the whole-house remodeling, aside from same small stuff, but for the reflooring, drywall and painting, plus rebuilding new closets I had to remove everything from the house. It’s a bit worse than a normal move-in because things were done in a rush — especially after my contractor became available earlier than expected — so lots of stuff was shoved into unlabeled boxes and contractor bags. So finding stuff is in itself a challenge. Nor is this week’s storm help with getting stuff out of the storage POD.
The bright side is I’m using it as an opportunity to do a “reverse Marie Kondo” — I’m only putting back the stuff I really need/want, and the rest will go in (well labelled and mostly organized) boxes in the garage for the time being. I’ll still need to deal with them later, but it’ll be a lot easier if the house itself is clutter free.

@Sister Golden Bear: When the tree fell on my house 8 years ago, I had 6 months of house repairs in my future.
They were planning to start in the front of the house, so I moved everything to the back of the house. Even the closets had to be emptied because my hardwood floors had to redone and the hardwood floors are all in the closets, too.
Well, a couple of days later there was a big change of plans and the contractor decided to start in the back of the house. So, yep, I had to move everything back out of the back of the house into the front of the house.
At some point, work was being done everywhere so it became clear that I needed a POD.
As one of the contractors said, “you have to really LOVE your stuff to move it 4 times.”
So, yes, 6 months from when the tree hit, when it was time to move everything out of the POD and back into the house, not everything came back in.
I could have sold a lot of it but at that point I had no energy for that, I just wanted my house back and my life back. I was lucky to have friends who had a pickup truck and they picked everything up from out of the driveway and drove it to the Habitat store. I just couldn’t deal with it any more.
Even moving my furniture back in was odd – after the empty house for the better part of 6 months my furniture looked GIGANTIC, even before I brought anything else in.
Best of luck with your move-in!
narya
@HinTN: Meh; I have a lot of ground venison, I got some ground pork to supplement it, and I just let the stove do the work. It’s a really good way to use up the venison. I may try making some sausage this year, too; I don’t have a sausage attachment, and I haven’t searched for casings yet, but I DO have large pastry bags and I don’t know why those wouldn’t work. (I also have loins and steaks and roasts and such, but there’s always plenty of ground as well.) I’ve been on vacation all week. This is the first day that I’m doing essentially nothing. Finished shopping for a few last minute small gifts on Monday. Wrapped and bagged it all on Tuesday. Did grocery shopping yesterday. Family holiday plans have changed quite a bit. We were going to oldest sister’s and youngest sister’s houses tomorrow to exchange gifts and my fellow middle sister’s on Saturday to celebrate with her, BIL and brother and his girlfriend. Oldest sister is her, BIL and suddenly their daughter, SIL and her two babies under 3 at their house due to the niece and SIL putting their own home on the market to see if they could get nibbles and having it sell the first day for twice what they paid for it. Since they didn’t have a new home lined up, niece’s family is now with my sister and BIL. They have all now come down with some kind of stomach virus, so we are skipping them for a week or so. Also, with Omicron spreading so fast, we all decided yesterday on masked visits with no food. So we’re all cooking our own in our homes. So I had to figure that out and go get what was needed. Decided on making my mom’s hot Italian sausage with onions and peppers, which I can throw into the crockpot, on Christmas Eve while we run to the younger sister’s to see her, BIL and the younger niece (junior in college, majoring in nuclear medicine) and exchange gifts. And for Christmas, a small standing rib roast which can be taken out of the fridge and wrapped in plastic to come to room temp, ready to pop in the oven when we get home from middle sister’s visit. Whew! I hate scrambling like that at the last minute, but I think I have a good plan.

She seemed devastated in the video taken at the scene, so it struck me as a legitimate negligence issue rather than the type of disregard for black lives we’re used to seeing in these videos.

@Baud: Yeah, that was my thought, too. The part that made me have some . . . compassion? or something for her is that another cop on the scene discreetly emptied the ammo out of her gun, recognizing her as a suicide risk right away. Does not take away the fact that her actions killed a man. She immediately knew she’d screwed up. The fact that she apologized to the family, while on the stand, also made a difference to me. It’s up to the family to decide how THEY feel about it, however; they’ll never have him back. There’s an episode of “Philly DA” that deals with some of that.

I would have thought keeping the taser in an opposite (non-dominant side) holster from the gun would have been enough, but apparently not. It seems like a good solution.
If I’m right handed, my gun would be in my right holster, my taser would be on my left.
This mix-up has happened more than once, so it’s time to come up with better solutions. What they should be, I leave to the experts. Maybe Silverman would know.

Tasers should be disallowed.
It’s a sign of faulty, militarized policing.
Cops should draw a weapon only when prepared to kill.
The officer here should not have drawn in this instance, whether taser or gun.
It’s used as a compliance tool, like a billy club.
It’s not.
As an EMT, I responded to several taser calls where the cop shot a nonviolent offender in the back who was fleeing. The cop always projected righteousness. They should have felt shame.
