Good Yontov!

JL Cauvin did a Hanukkah piece too.
Happy Hanukkah everyone!

Doug Emhoff, our Second Gentleman, lit the first candle of the National Menorah today for the first night of Hanukkah.♥️

Happy Hanukkah!
Nutmeg again
Happy Hanukkah to all!! But, yikes with the video — not the week Stephen Sondheim dies! Have some respect !!

@Central Planning: Was just coming here to post that! Hilarious.
Almost Retired
@Nutmeg again: I think Stephen Sondheim would have loved the clip.
SiubhanDuinne
@Almost Retired:
Agree. I think he would have kvelled.
SiubhanDuinne
@Central Planning:
Love that he tosses a mask on his MAGA cap as a yarmulke. Never mind that it looks like a tawdry, sweaty, wrinkled old brassiere.

Thirded on Sondheim’s probable enjoyment. Chag urim sameach to those celebrating, including (some of) my cousins.

From Handel’s oratorio Judas Maccabaeus: the justly famous chorus “See, the conqu’ring hero comes.”

Happy Hanukkah to my long lost Jewish cousins.
In 1900 my grandfather’s brother married the boss’s daughter, a nice young woman who was Jewish. Nella. Her father ran the Brunswick saloon* in Chicago where Unc worked, and Unc was a terrible drunk and cheated on her, and my great grandmother was probably mean to her as well (the woman was a tatar). They had a little girl named Dorothy, and in 1901 they divorced. My grandmother kept track of the girl for years, writing letters to her and her mother, sending photos back and forth, but I can’t find any mention of her anywhere after her 18th birthday. The problem I think is that Nella changed her last name after the divorce, may have remarried, and I can’t track either of them through the census or other records after 1900.
so, wherever you are, descendants of Dorothy E, I wish you a very Happy Hanukkah!
*The family that owned the Brunswick company were her father’s cousins. After Brunswick ran out of wealthy patrons to make beautiful custom pool tables for, he opened several saloons where men could drink and play pool on the tables his company made.

Happy Hannukah to all who celebrate.
Padma Lakshmi’s Taste The Nation did a great Hannukah episode. The series focusses on Holiday cuisine of various Immigrant and Indigenous groups. Thanksgiving had the Wampanoags of Barnstable, MA (the original T-giving) and highlighted their Day of Mourning. Christmas is going to focus on Cuban-Americans (Nochebueno) and New Years on Korean-Americans (Seollal). We’ve watched Day of Mourning and Hannukah episodes and they were both really good.
Ok, off to wait for the Thai food we’re having delivered :)

Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate!

Chappy Chanukah!
By now, obligatory.
Alternatively, something which trods a different path.
;)
(Likely will repost this in morning thread,)

Off-topic, and off-religions, sorry but … Phil Saviano just died today. Known for his work as a whistleblower against bishops in the Catholic Church and Spotlight fame. He was a sweetheart and a lion. What a blow to the world.

I remember a bit by the late Dennis Wolfberg where he said a well-intentioned non-Jew wished him a Happy Chaka Khan.

Happy Hannukah!
A good friend helping me through some tough times celebrated with his family today.

Happy Hanukkah! Ms. Laurie – I was talking complete nonsense to my 2.5 y.o. grandson. He gave me a giant side-eye, then rolled his eyes up and opened his Jaws sideways. A major double take. Asked his dad how the hell does he know when and how to do that? So a Brian double side-eye to you.

@West of the Rockies: Somewhere around here I have a “Hannukah Bingo” card where the (weak) joke is that every square is a variant spelling of Chanukka. I don’t recall “Chaka Khan” on it; most of the entries at least looked plausible.
Hungry Joe
Earliest Hanukkah I can remember … and I’ve been around for a while.
When I was a kid we got presents over eight nights, each night’s present increasing in value. The first few nights were low-level stuff — socks, knickknacks from aunts & uncles, etc. By nights Seven and Eight we were getting capital-P Presents. At the time I thought all Jewish families did it this way, but I learned that there are endless variations.
I remember thinking that the Christian kids had less fun — one big morning of present-overload, and that was it.

Happy Hannukah to all!
I heard a great program of music, reminiscences, and poetry tonight, which doesn’t seem to be available in any take-home format. But if you get a chance to hear the program “Rozhinkes mit Mandlin” by Rita Jacobs Willens, be there.
@West of the Rockies: My, what tender feelings that must have inspired! What is the equivalent to “Bless [their] heart?”
phdesmond
@SiubhanDuinne:
wow, that’s a lot of singers!

@West of the Rockies: That is hilarious! Happy Chaka Khan to all!

@NotMax:
delightful selections.

@SiubhanDuinne: Wonderful! The accompaniment is so simple and more than up to the chorus yet a deft touch.

@HumboldtBlue: Slava isn’t wrong — on one level, sadly the holiday does purport to celebrate the triumph of fundamentalists over the secular. The myth about the oil is embarrassing one-dimensional.
And American Jewish culture does indeed borrow from Christmas but in my mind, that is what living cultures do, they borrow and evolve as needed to keep things vital.
But Slava overlooks that Hanukah is also (duh) a solstice celebration. During this week, the moon will wane and then reappear — a built-in reminder that darkness never lasts (the moon of course was a lot more important to our electric-lightless ancestors). And in sync, the number of candles lit each night increases.
This is where I find the “real” holiday, I’m certainly not rejoicing over the fanatical Maccabees killing my spiritual ancestors (if atheists can have spiritual ancestors).

@Ohio Mom:
That motherfucker can be very, very Russian, throw in Judaism on top and next thing you know he’s cursing peanut butter.

Enjoy the first of eight crazy nights.

@HumboldtBlue: Most of the time, I enjoy Slava but he does have his quirks.
@NotMax: Those were great. I don’t know how I managed to forget “I want a puppy for Hanukah,” thank you for reminding me. I noticed Six13 had a quick puppy reference thrown in.
@Benw: Hope things start looking up for you.
@Hungry Joe: I had a similar moment when I discovered that in some families, the kids stole the matzah, in my family, my uncle hid it and we had to find it.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all, just to tick off the MAGAts.

This is my kitty’s first Hanukkah and she was very intrigued by my electric menorah.
(1. I’m lazy. 2. Hanukkah candles make a damn mess. 3. See curious kitty above–I did not want to deal with singed fur or scorched carpet.)
Chacal Charles Caltrop
@Hungry Joe: Christmas used to be twelve days of presents (as the song says, on the _- day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…) Now the entire thing has been replaced by a countdown.
phdesmond
@Chacal Charles Caltrop:
countdown vs. escalation.

@Chacal Charles Caltrop:
The Xmas holiday began in our house on the feast of St. Nicholas (complete with a puppet show, Black Peter, gold, shoes and chocolate) and ended with the epiphany.
I’ll never forget my dear Dublin native friend describe his first Xmas in the U.S. His apartment overlooked an alley, and he was in full Xmas fervor as the holiday just got started and on the 26th or 27th he was looking out the window and watched a neighbor toss out their Xmas tree straight into the dumpster.
He was flabbergasted, the holiday had just begun.

Hag samayach, everyone – and thanks for that adorable video. Living in Santa Monica, CA, I feel obligated to share “I’m spending Hanukah in Santa Monica” by that brilliant satirist, Tom Lehrer – enjoy!
