I’m not too bad but I have been waking up earlier.
Omnes Omnibus
I’m fine.
WaterGirl
All my guys have adjusted to the time change. Is it just Steve, or is everyone still out of whack?
Jerzy Russian
Maybe if we go far enough west of the International Date Line we will get to Friday. At this point it is worth a shot.

My COVID sleep patterns are so screwy that the time change has had no effect. (And I don’t have a fixed schedule.) I still get my best sleep in a one- or two-hour nap most afternoons. The one thing I do notice is sundown at 5:00 p.m., which seems a little harsh.
Major Major Major Major
It’s Friday for me! :D
Baud
@Major Major Major Major:
How far back did you set your clock?
delk
Everyday is Tuesday since I retired.

Are the news channels doing gavel to gavel on the Rittenhouse trial or is it just because That Little Punk is testifying?

Here, maybe Bonnie Tyler can lift your spirits.

@delk: Every day is like Sunday
I’m fine with the fall back, it’s the spring forward that knocks me off kilter, and then with the long days it takes me a long time to get back on
Major Major Major Major
@Baud: They’ve started giving us a lot more days off…
Baud
@Major Major Major Major:
Nice.

When it gets dark I think “oh, only a few hours till bedtime.” Then I make dinner, do some reading, maybe fold some laundry. And it’s 8 o’clock. That could make me feel productive. But in fact it makes the evening seem interminable.
I know I’ll turn a corner around late December. Just gotta hold on till then.

eta: I looked at the Nat’l Weather Service this morning, which said rain mainly after 4pm so I planned to walk right about now (3pm). Looked outside and saw a wet deck, and checked NWS and =tah dah= they revised the ‘forecast’ to rain mainly after 3pm. It isn’t a forecast if it’s reporting current conditions, people. Sheesh.
eta 2.0: I started a new comment because I couldn’t edit my previous. Once this comment posted, the edit comment caret re-appeared @14. Ah, well.

Leaving all other such claims behind in the dust, naps truly are the gifts that keep on giving.

I’ve never in my life had trouble adjusting to the time change, either in spring or fall — until now. For some reason, I’m finding the early darkness just depressing as fuck this year, and I hope I’m not laying down a new pattern for myself.
Steeplejack (phone)
@JoyceH:
They amped up the coverage because Rittenhouse is testifying.
This blew me away:
Wow.
WaterGirl
@Steeplejack (phone): Wow is right.
Impartial justice!
Omnes Omnibus
@Steeplejack (phone): The song is Proud To Be An American. It’s a crap song, but I would not automatically associate it with Trump.
Leto
@SiubhanDuinne: I have SAD and this is a major factor for me. I really don’t like this time of the year because of the decreased amount of light. Cold sure as hell doesn’t help, but if we had more light it might not be such an issue. I’m eternally happy that our new home has a sunroom because I honestly plan on spending most of my winter time there.
Leto
@Omnes Omnibus: the song had taken a merciful hiatus until… Trumpov brought it back. Greenwood sang at his inaugural and was a featured singer at many of his rallies. YMMV though.
HeleninEire
@Baud: I’m waking up earlier too but I like it. On Sunday I got, like, 50 things done by 10:45.

@RaflW: We had violent wind and downpours plus a tornado warning for west of Seattle. We drove to downtown to pick up a couple paintings and the painter, plus his partner for dinner. There were foot deep puddles on the freeway ramps. They were nearly invisible in the darkness. Fun times! /s
But dinner with a couple friends and new art, new throw pillows, and new plates to serve the extra thick pork chops with a sweet smoked paprika and chipotle dry rub. Yum!
Steeplejack (phone)
@Omnes Omnibus:
We report, you decide. But knowing that the song is associated with a wide spectrum of right-wing assholes and not just Trump is not as comforting as one might think.

As a new retiree I can sleep whenever I damn well want ( except when the dogs want out) and I do. So of course I am up at 2 am every night. Insomnia isn’t as scary if you don’t have to put in a full workday tomorrow.
dww44
@Omnes Omnibus: I would.
sab
@Steeplejack (phone): Yikes wow.
Kay
@Omnes Omnibus:
It is his walk out song though:
Omnes Omnibus
@Leto: An old judge is quite likely to have had someone put it as his ringtone years ago and it has simply remained.
Dan B
@Leto: Ive had good luck with full spectrum LED lights from Waveform and from CREE -their PRO line. Plus a couple pricey ones from SORAA – PAR’s.
Seattle is really dark. Yesterday I turned on the living room lights mid day a couple times because of the dark cloud cover. And we’re dark by 4 PM.
WaterGirl
@sab: Will no one rid us of this disgusting creature?
dww44
@Omnes Omnibus: I’m not gonna waste any time making excuses for this Judge. He’s apparently a total righty and is the antithesis of what a judge is supposed to be.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Omnes Omnibus: I still associate it with Bush II, but I also remember having a booze-fueled argument with a friend of my sister’s over the first Gulf War, and she just started singing that song at me. “I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free”
the actual title is “God Bless the USA”, and the google tells me he actually recorded it in 1984

Good thread from @Popehat about the Rittenhouse judge, starting off with some Cole-style all caps:

It’s Friday for me; I’m off from work until Tuesday.
MomSense
My cold that wouldn’t go away turned out to be pneumonia. Not Covid, but the old fashioned illnesses still suck. I’ve been down for the count.
debbie
@Kay:
Is that played before, during, or after his humping-the-flag routine?
debbie
@Steeplejack (phone):
NPR has been playing excerpts of the trial testimony, including Rittenhouse crying like a little girl and the judge’s lecture to prosecutors. The judge sounds like a total loon.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@MomSense: damn, I hope you’re through the worst of it
debbie
@MomSense:
Ick, hope you get past that really quickly. So much coughing!
WaterGirl
@MomSense: Oh, no on the pneumonia but yay on no Covid.
Are you able to take a good amount of time off work?
Leto
@Dan B: when I was stationed in England, I was issued one because in the winter we’d basically never see daylight. We arrived at work when it was dark, took a lunch when we might see some outside time, then got off work and it was dark. PA is similar, but I’ll def check out the ones you recommended. Sunroom will help, but won’t hurt to have some extra help with these steel grey skies.
Steeplejack (phone)
@MomSense:
That sucks. I’ve been there. Hope you get well soon.
Omnes Omnibus
Okay, I knew it was a mistake to say anything. I’ll keep quiet again.
WaterGirl
@Omnes Omnibus: WI thread coming up in 25 minutes.

@Leto: Where were you? England or Scotland.? Scotland is insanely far north, and they think they are just normally in Europe.
Leto
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: it gained traction during the first Gulf War. Basically exploded in popularity at that time, and hung around as a staple for returning deployed military folk. I played it ad naseum for folks returning from the Balkans campaign in ‘99. Most of my generation loathed it and it had died off until 2015 when a certain orange turd slid down an escalator.
Old School
@WaterGirl: Oooo! I hope it is about cheese curds and bubblers.
Dan B
@MomSense: Sorry to hear you’re down with pneumonia. Get well soon!
My partner used to have pneumonia every late winter or spring. I hounded him to take Claritin and a nasal steroid for his allergies and no more pneumonia. The last time he got pneumonia was at a retreat n Hawaii. It stressed him. I dragged him to the emergency room where he ended up on an albuterol inhaler with images of the caterpillar on the mushroom with a hookah. It was surreal since the inhaler was a big hose. He wishes you well and no embarrassing ER experiences.

US v Europe. New York City is at the same latitude as Rome! I. e. really far south.
eclare
@WaterGirl: How are you feeling?
Leto
@sab: UK near Oxford. I was stationed at Croughton Air Base (where the State Dept wife killed the kid on the motorcycle. Another Trumpov fiasco ensued). Scotland was beautiful and we loved visiting. They’re a lot closer to the EU than GB. Surprising fact about Scotland: they absolutely love American country music. Big country music scene there. Line dancing and all that. That was kind of a surprise.
Origuy
Madeline Kahn knows how you feel.

@Leto: My junior year abroad Liverpool was a center of country music. We and they love us and them more than anyone will admit.
Dan B
@Leto: I persuaded n artist friend to get five PAR30’s for his windowless studio. He loves them and tells me so repeatedly. His are four 5000K and one 4000K. They are on the cool side but because of their full spectrum and design for color matching and studio they look terrific. 5000K is a bit cool for home but it is best for SAD. A few where you sit and 3000K for other areas would do the trick. I’ve found if you mix 5000K with 3000K and 2700K in a fixture or in close proximity to one another the light looks very nice and bright but not at all harsh.
Dan B
@sab: I am reminded of the joke about what happens when you play country music backwards.
MomSense
Thanks, everyone. It just makes me exhausted.
WaterGirl
@eclare: Today I am either getting better or I am having a good day, to be followed by something other than good.
I spent most of the day in bed on Monday and Tuesday. Today I felt pretty tired by 11 but decided to finish what I was doing instead of taking a nap. So no nap today, but I will surely head to bed ridiculously early.
Getting tested on Friday morning, which I feel is long enough with symptoms to show positive, if i am positive. If I do have Covid, then I would say that the vaccine is kicking its ass, for now at least
Thanks for thinking of me.
debbie
@MomSense:
As soon as you’re eligible age-wise and insurance-wise, get the pneumonia vaccine. It’s definitely worthwhile.

Getting a kick out of picturing Cole pointing at the clock and
Steve: “Fuck you, FEED ME!”
Geminid
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Lee Greenwood was kind of a has been when that song had it’s big revival after 9-11. My late friend Chris was a long time country music fan, and I remember him saying of Greenwood, “I wonder what rock they got him from under.”

@delk:
I’m not sure what day it is since I retired.
I sort of like that in day, not being “special” and sending me to work.
Drdavechemist
Sort of semi-Friday here since school is closed tomorrow for Veterans’ Day and then the administration
dragooned the faculty and staff andgave the students a four-day weekend so the adults can work on our ten-year accreditation on Friday. Hoping that my working group on Friday is efficient and that I cantake Friday afternoon offspend Friday afternoon prepping the house for our first dinner party since before the pandemic began. Celebrating with a Bombay Sapphire martini tonight and then going to work anyway tomorrow to catch up on grading.Capri
I’ll bite. What happens wHen you play country music backwards?
Steeplejack
@Capri:
You get your dog back, you get your truck back, and you get your girl back.
frosty
@Capri: It’s from a song called Backwards. The idea is that all the stuff that country singers bemoan about turns around. Here’s the chorus:
You get your house back
You get your dog back
You get your best friend Jack back
You get your truck back
You get your hair back
You get your first and second wives back
Your front porch swing
Your pretty little thing
Bonnie
That seems strange to me because I had two cats who would get me up at 7:25 every morning despite the time changes and, on Saturdays and Sundays. Thus, I told everyone my cats could read the clock. That is still what I believe although those two cats are dead now.
