You know, if a frog had wings it wouldn’t bump its ass when it jumped.
I assume Collins et. al. will be allowed to drag the world’s longest cover of “Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps” for another week and then, oopsie! two of the 11 letter signers will find an i that wasn’t dotted or a t that wasn’t crossed in the proposed bill, which killed bipartisanship as we know it. The good news is that when we finally hit that glorious day, the Democrats will just roll everything into one bill and pass it, showing everyone what a jack off waste of time it is to try to bargain with Republicans.

Nancy Pelosi not fucking around:
Pelosi Statement on Republican Recommendations to Serve on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol
Gin & Tonic
I heard Pelosi rejected Gym Jordan from the select committee. Good.
Albatrossity
The problem is that the Ds have to pick off 10 Rs to get a vote, and the Rs only have to pick off one D to stall everything. No progress can be made until that calculus changes, I fear.
Baud
@Gin & Tonic:
I too read the first comment of this post.
Gin & Tonic
@Gin & Tonic: Shit, I am slow and not as accurate.
ETA: And now I have Baud making fun of me. This day can’t get worse.

Serious question: What did Jordan and Banks do that they specifically are not wanted on the committee? I can’t guess how to look it up because they’ve all done so much awful shit.
germy
Open thread?
Mistermix, it looks like Cuomo has reverted to his old feet-dragging self. I don’t know why. Is he pissed because of all the investigations into his behavior?
Baud
@Frankensteinbeck:
I assumed it was voting against certification, but it could be something else.
dmsilev
@Frankensteinbeck: They both voted against certification, and Jordan at least has been vocal in his support for the insurrectionists.
John S.
@Baud: In the case of Gym Jordan, it could be just because he is Gym Fucking Jordan, professional troll and asshole extraordinaire.
Baud
On infrastructure, Chuck was right to force the issue. As a practical matter, though, I’m not sure what the difference is between a vote today and a vote on Monday in terms of the Dems going it on their own if talks fail over the weekend.
Baud
@germy:
Maybe they’re all too high to respond.
JoyceH
Nehls also voted against certification but had the sense to keep his mouth shut. Banks said the committee was created “solely to malign conservatives “ and intended to push for investigation of the BLM protests, indicating that he planned to turn the hearings into a clown show. With Jordan, clown show shenanigans go without saying.
Baud
@JoyceH: Thanks!
TaMara (HFG)
Gin & Tonic
@JoyceH: And if those morons had agreed to a bipartisan committee, they could have had all the clown show they wanted.

@TaMara (HFG): So far, not seeing a downside here…

Calling Dr. Charlie Brown to the emergency room. Dr. Charlie Brown to the emergency room, stat. Code Collins.
Dorothy A. Winsor
Liz Cheney is still there, I suspect
JoyceH
@TaMara (HFG): Huh! If they want to take part in the committee, can he stop them?
Enhanced Voting Techniques
This is just more Kabuki so the Republicans can be for the bill and against it as the same time.
JoyceH
Back to infrastructure bill – do the Republicans playing Wimpy (“I’d gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.”) hoping to kick the can down the road to the August recess understand that it’s up to Shumer whether or not there will even BE an August recess?
Kent
West Virginia ranks dead last out of the 50 states in terms of infrastructure. I expect Manchin is acutely aware of that fact. If he can’t bring home some bridges and highways and schools and shit like that, what use is he to West Virginia?
Sinema is a different creature. But I can’t see her standing alone without Machin providing cover.

Or it’s a consequence of whatever is compelling Republicans and right-wing news/propaganda outlets to also “pivot” on vaccines, too.
Maybe the GOP is seeing some really bad numbers in polling or focus groups?
It seems weird that this is coming right on the heels of a sudden right-wing turn-around on vaccines.
trollhattan
@TaMara (HFG):
Gosh, how will they get the job done without any Republicans?
Lacuna Synecdoche
@Frankensteinbeck:
I think you answered your own question there, pal.
They’ve both done so much awful shit in general that a specific reason is probably moot.
sab
@Frankensteinbeck: Banks (who was to be the ranking member) issued a statement when he accepted his appointment: ” Make no mistake, Nancy Pelosi created this committee soley to malign conservatives and to justify the Left’s authoritarian agenda.”
Jordan turns everything he is involved with into a circus.
She wants members who will take the project seriously. Those two were quite obviuos about not taking it seriously.
sab
@Baud: She said that she was not considering the certification vote.
Keith P.
@Lacuna Synecdoche: Jordan could be a potential witness

I’m going to predict that Nancy try to appoint more Republicans of her choosing to fill the committee in. I’m not sure any will take her up on it because McCarthy will almost certainly strip them off committees, but I think she’ll try.
This is not something we should fear.
Bill Arnold
You are too kind. The intent was to buy some time for the possibility that a Democratic Senator would die or become incapacitated. (Does this mean that I think that many R Senators are amoral psychopaths? Not saying.)
Lacuna Synecdoche
Martin:
I’m thinking Kinzinger.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@TaMara (HFG): Good. I don’t know what the exact parameters of the rule are, but in her place I would if I could appoint Kinzinger, Upton, Herrara-Beutler, Katko and that other rich R libertarian from MI whose name is escaping me. They can take their seats or not, and she can say, “Hey, I tried for bipartisanship .”
sab
@Lacuna Synecdoche: Not if Kinzimger wants to get reelected in his district.
jnfr
Jordan and Banks started trashing the committee as soon as they were appointed. One of the other three, not sure which, also voted to refuse the electors, but he’s been clear that there was an insurrection and actually wanted to investigate.
Lacuna Synecdoche

Good.

If Kinzinger was overly concerned about reelection, I suspect he would have been behaving very differently this past six months and more.

It should not be a surprise that Pelosi will fight. Right-wingers have (somehow) persuaded themselves that they are the party of truth and righteousness, but there is an alternative and very different narrative outside the RW Trumpist bubble. Now we will see that, in real life.
Lacuna Synecdoche
@sab:
Given how vocal Kinzinger has been, I’d say that boat has already sailed.
Jim, Foolish Literalist

@Turgidson: ha! somebody in the replies said the same thing!
Kent
I would not be surprised to see her appoint my GOP representative Jaime Herrera Beutler from here in the WA-3rd. She was one of the few GOP-ers who voted to impeach. Our “jungle primary” here in WA basically makes her immune from primary challenges from the right. To hold her seat she basically has to tilt centrist and independent in both the primary and general election and ramp up her name recognition. This would do it.
sab
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I happened to watch this story break on cable news today. It was remarkable how every channel had the exact same take- that it would make the Democrats look bad and partisan. I thought “my that GOP spin machine is efficient.”
I think I like the idea that they are sad because their sources just got kicked off the committee better.
Betty
@Frankensteinbeck: They already came out making statements trashing the Committee’s work. No way should such openly obstructionist people serve.
Betty
@Kent: But isn’t she a witness to the exchange between McCarthy and Trump?
artem1s
@Martin:
Liz Cheney certainly doesn’t. I’m betting she’ll welcome the chance to make McQuarthy look bad and possibly get to question both him and Gym about why they tried to delay evacuating the House until the Mob could interrupt the certification vote.
More popcorn plz!
Kent
@Betty: Every member of the House is a potential witness of some sort. I don’t see that being a criteria for committee membership. McCarthy isn’t on trial here. I don’t see them calling her as a rebuttal witness if he lies or refuses to testify
Based on my sense of this district, I really do believe that carving a non-Trumpy course would help her electoral chances rather than hurt them. The political dynamics here are different from pretty much every other state.
Martin
@sab: That’s why I said ‘try’. I don’t think she’ll get takers, but I think she’ll try.
Martin
@Kent: I think the sort of witness matters. Witnesses to the day of the event generally don’t really matter. Witnesses to the lead-up and the response do. So, McCarthy’s communications with the WH. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s information. Anyone who brought tours through in the days before, who spoke at the rally and participated in any way – I think they can’t serve on it. That might take some democrats out who were witness to some events in the leadup.
Anonymous At Work
I use the term broadly but Senator Collins is the biggest gaslighter in the Senate. I hate her more than Ted Cruz.
Another Scott
@Gin & Tonic: I think the GQPers know that all the photos and videos and eyewitness testimony can’t be whatabout-ed and just-tourists-ed away by Jordan and the rest throwing tantrums this time. They know it’s going to be a disaster for them, and they had to know that Pelosi would exclude Jordan and the other guy. So, they’re going to try to paint it as unfair and partisan and mean.
That’s their only hope.
Cheers,
Scott.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
The sportswriter analogy works if you posit the Village/Politico types as NY Yankee fellators whose response to every baseball news good or bad is “This is good news for Steinbrenner and the Yanks”! Oh and Boston (the Democrat party) Sucks!
Frank Wilhoit
@Kent: Source? After all the freeways-to- (and -from) nowhere that were built for Robert Byrd, I cannot quite believe that.

@Frank Wilhoit:
The vast majority of highways built with funding obtained by Senator Byrd are totally useful in every way. Except for commercial developments…
But thanks for your opinions.
