I know I should be talking about the SCOTUS rulings or something important, but all I really want to talk about is produce. I picked up another flat of strawberries this morning, and I gave a couple quarts to my parents and some other folks. I also picked up some just absolutely gorgeous tomatoes, and a couple large onions and fresh garlic, both of which had just been pulled out of the ground and were not even cleaned when I bought them.
I had my first tomato sandwich of the summer, and tomorrow, after it is done marinating, will have my first cucumber/onion/tomato salad. My house smells like fresh garlic, the sky is blue, there is no humidity, and today is just a very good day. I had a very good session with Steve under the canopy from the pergola, just sitting there doing nothing for an hour. It was very nice.

Local strawberries are available in my corner of SW Washington state, and yes, they are good as always. In the bad news, we’re getting a 100-degree heat wave this weekend, which is (for the moment) rare in this part of the world.
Cervantes
Yeah well you’re evidently in the south somewhere. Those of us who live in civilized climes won’t have that stuff (except for the strawberries) for a couple of weeks anyway. (I have been harvesting immature garlic as needed but it isn’t as useful.)

We hit an important, nay essential, milestone at work yesterday: One of my colleagues and I reactivated the departmental coffee machine. Took it out of storage, cleaned it, checked everything out, and made the first cups of coffee in almost a year and a half.
There was much rejoicing.
stardus614
I was just thinking something similar. The sky is blue, the leaves are green, the windows are open and there’s a soft breeze blowing through the house. I’m not watching MSNBC and, for the moment, the world is a fine place.

The only SCOTUS ruling today that was awful was the anti-labor takings ruling. Depending on how it plays out, that could create real problems.

@Baud: It was a surprisingly good day given the composition of the Court.

Days like this don’t happen all the time. It’s important to just wallow in the joy of doing nothing but appreciating them when we do get them.

My sister got my mom hooked on grapes from Aldis in Texas last month. She went to our local one today for the first time just for grapes. My mom didn’t realize until she got home that they are cotton candy grapes. She LOVES them. I didn’t know they existed.

If they were heirloom tomatoes, I’m jealous.

Hey John. Take panko crumbs, lots of them, a cup or more, and toast in olive oil in a cast-iron pan and set them aside. Wipe out the pan and sweat some onions and bell pepper in more olive oil til nearly soft, then finish with some fresh minced garlic cloves. Set the sautéed vegetables aside. Now cook some angel hair pasta (or whatever spaghetti or linguine you have on hand) and set that aside, with some olive oil mixed in to keep it from clumping. Now boil some shrimp (caught wild in American waters only!) and not too long, just til cooked, keep em tender.
Now put that shrimp on the pasta and add the garlicky vegetables and dump a good batch of those crispy fried breadcrumbs in. Some snipped parsley on top will also do ya. Salt and devour.

According to Merriam Webster, Dersh invented it.

When you get local peaches in, slice them super ripe and soft, sprinkle with crumbled cotija cheese (from the Mexican aisle), or feta crumbles if your grocery doesn’t have a Mexican aisle, and add some fresh Thai basil in ribbons, and some cucumber slices if you like. Put all this on a big plate and serve yourself and your guests with a pie server.

Don’t apologize Cole for writing about your lovely day instead of fussing about politics.
There is a snippet of Jewish folk wisdom that goes something like, When you arrive in the great beyond, one of the questions God asks you is about all the worldly pleasures you forwent.
The idea being, you have insulted God by not enjoying the gifts he/she set before you during your lifetime. So think of your day today as fulfilling a deep religious obligation.

I am in scramble mode. Again. To put together a federal proposal in one day. And insert a run to the pharmacy for doxycycline. That said, I am so happy to hear about that lovely day, those wonderful strawberries, and the time with Steve. Thank you for sharing; that made me smile and take a deep breath.
Also, I seem to have missed the fundraiser by being out of town, but would still like to throw extra in the kitty; should I just increase my monthly contribution a bit?

As for good days, I took Jazzy to the groomer today. Those of you with short-haired dogs will never comprehend the sheer relief of the Samoyed owner knowing that someone else is going to be brushing your dog for a couple hours. Two weekends ago Avalune and I took a trip out to the Reading (PA) Amish Farmer’s Market for the first time in almost 18 months? Bought a mess of strawberries, black berries, and some blueberries. She proceeded to turn it all into the most wonderful jam we’ve had in quite some time. We gave some of it to our neighbors and friends as small gifts, while the rest has made our morning breakfast that much better. It’s a nice 74F, no humidity, really good football matches… just an “ahhhhh” moment.

Cooking with my spousal unit for my daughter’s bridal shower tomorrow. She requested pulled pork sliders, pulled smoked chicken sliders (her Daddy makes the best BBQ) smoked pork belly bites , German potato salad and deviled eggs…maybe I will make frog eye salad if I get really ambitious. Schrodinger’s Cat has a woodchuck eating her vegetables.
I had a rampaging mother doe frightening my pitbull. Doe has moved on, and she didn’t even eat my new seckel per tree. I got it from the nursery as a stick with dry roots in a box. I took about a week to plant it, dead as a doornail. Checked it out today, and the stick has sprouted tiny leaves all over.

Yesterday, I finally got to make JC’s salmon version of his dad’s cold curry shrimp salad with peas. This required a half-hour ferry trip to the big island, a half-hour taxi ride to the grocery store, buying the ingredients for twice to three times what they cost in the States—plus having to do without peas, lettuce, tomato, bread, or red pepper because the weekly freight boat hadn’t arrived—and then taking the taxi and the ferry back.
The salad was delightful, and I splurged on several cans of salmon so I can repeat it. I may even have all the ingredients next time.
Y’all inspire me with your ideas for cuisine.
And yes, I bought cat food too.

What a lovely day John! I don’t make jelly or jam any more because my kids all “don’t do sugar” and I made it all low sugar to begin with ?
But the strawberries are in here too, and my raspberry bushes are putting out more berries than I can keep up with. Instead of jelly, I just slice or put the whole fruit on my toast with my peanut butter, or make berry smoothies. Berry, pecan, and feta salads too. The rest go into the freezer. Well, except for the handful I just made a raspberry margarita from ?

The LP graduated & went to work for the Food Project so until she moves out we’re getting a nice sampling of local produce, My only produce problem is peaches. Every year, it seems like a higher % of peaches are total crap. I’ve been down where peaches are grown – heck, they even grow a few here – and the fresh picked ones are always great. So why oh why are commercial peaches turning into sour cottony horrors?

@WaterGirl: I usually say sauté myself, but this term seems to be used a lot on cooking shows and blogs in recent years to mean cook onions down lightly, in oil, not letting them brown.
WaterGirl
