This article is a somewhat overwrought appeal for a wealth tax. I am in favor of raising the top income tax rate on individuals and an increase in estate taxes, but am not sure about a wealth tax.
The article falsely implies that wealthy individuals are taking special advantage of a tool not available to anyone else. But no one is prevented from buying stocks or other assets, and no one pays tax on unrecognized gains from an increase in value of assets.
But yeah, we need an overhaul of the tax code to undo the mischief caused by Republicans in 2017 and earlier. This should include the return of a corporate minimum tax.
I’m not sure whether there should be a wealth tax; most countries that previously tried it rejected it. But I look forward to some interesting discussion on the issue.

Don’t quite agree. And I have noted before that the Democrats need to thoroughly review the tax code and undo much of what the GOP did in 2017 with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which created tiers which greatly favors investment and business income over wage income. I would also like to increase the standard deduction so that more lower income people pay no tax at all. I would also increase the Earned Income Credit and take a serious look at universal basic income.

Like, right now, with the real estate market being crazy AF, I am really stressed about it. Like, if I want to move back to Arizona, is that gone forever because prices are shooting up? Because, in my mind, that will go on forever. Mortgages are fairly difficult to qualify for ATM, even for people with good credit — that’s obviously going to go on forever, too. So, in short, am I stuck here forever? The idea of not having the option to go back is just incredibly distressing to me right now. And everyone else is able to see that this shit moves in cycles, that I’m good at my job and got three offers during the pandemic, that I need to chill the fuck out. Yet: that is difficult.

I’ve started to believe that voter ID is going to happen no matter what. The GOP has used it pretty successfully as a cudgel to claim Dems enable fraud and to restrict access to the polls where adopted. No one should be, but after decades of Republicans telling everyone that the wealthy pay the most in taxes so that’s why we need to cut their taxes more, it’s not that surprising that some people would be unaware that so many of the wealthy pay little or no income taxes. Can’t think of his name right now, but a man who used to be the tax reporter at the NY Times wrote a book about the tax system; he figured out that when you take all taxes into consideration, not just income taxes like Republicans do, the tax system is pretty much a flat rate system in the U.S. It’s probably worse now, because he wrote it before the 2017 Republican tax cut bill.

Please don’t be too cavalier about whether you might be infected. I have lifelong, debilitating afteraffects of untreated Lyme disease because in the early days, before the disease was more common and more commonly understood, even doctors thought a tick had to “settle in” before transmitting spirochetes. Sadly, that’s not true. If you were bitten, you should have a blood test specific to Lyme and even see an infectious disease specialist. I certainly hope you have no problem, but I also hope no one else ever has the issues I’ve dealt with for many years.

Some of the accusations of manic progressivism and Eeyorism here seem like gaslighting lately.
In the run-up to the election of Donald Trump, there was a “don’t panic” sentiment coming from right-wingers because it could not be that bad, and it was much worse than a lot of people imagined. I expected it to be pretty bad because the last time things were not going to be so bad were the George W. Bush forever wars.
The arguments now are not between the center left and the showboating leftist bros. They are within the group of people who got Biden elected.
Now, I am worried that some white folks are saying they are not going to vote for a Democrat again if they don’t get to work because everyone does not have the luxury of living comfortably under the fascist government that Republicans are going to set up.
I am also worried about the people saying “this is not a big deal, and look at the good stuff they are doing.” Government was not designed to move fast, but there are some problems where we have kicked the can down the road for fifty years, and we need to move with an urgency (on issues like climate change.)
Too many things may be broken to get it all fixed, but we can’t leave voting rights to Joe Manchin to figure out. It is too important.

Yesterday a guy at work asked me when Harris was going to go to the border. I asked him why he wanted her to do a photo op, and he said that she needs to see what’s happening there with her own eyes. I said yeah, then what? How does that make a difference one way or another? He kept insisting she needs to go there. I said yeah, you’ve got your talking points but nothing else. He also won’t get vaccinated, and told me his doctor said he’s young and healthy (early 30’s) and doesn’t need it. I told him he needs a new doctor! Anyway, they’ve got their talking point and won’t come off it. They want pictures of her at the border with a bunch of “those people” crowding around to use, is all. Oh, and I actually think it was brilliant of her to say things that would get her slammed by the Squad – she needs separation between her and them IMHO.

@Brachiator: Wealthy people do not necessarily have income and do not need to work. We accidentally went to the rich people accountant to do our taxes, and a) it cost a lot of money and b) she had someone getting audited all the time for donating way more than she was making in income because that lady had a lot of generational wealth.
The only problem with a wealth tax is figuring out how much wealth people have. Primary residences should be excluded so someone who bought a house in California in the 1980s that is now worth millions is not dinged for living in their home. Cars and yachts should definitely be included in the measure of wealth. “I made my third home so ridiculously gaudy that no one else is going to want to buy it” should not be an argument for reducing property tax.
Now that work is not going to have to be in person for most of the people making $100,000+, I think people in rural areas are going to see what a lot of money looks like because people are building some ridiculous houses in places like Nebraska.
We do really need a wealth tax because a lot of people do not seem to understand how wealthy the very wealthy are. That type of distortion where some people are starving while other people are trying to figure out which ego will get to the moon first is not great for society. There are going to be a number of children who got orphaned due to COVID.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
@Brachiator:
Agree that a wealth tax is a lousy idea. My ideal tax code would have about a 40% estate tax, a 40% tax on all assets placed into trust, a corporate tax on retained corporate earnings above the aggregate values of dividends, would treat capital gains as ordinary income, would actually favor dividends and would eliminate any deductions related to the purchase and development of real estate going forward. Oh, and I’d eliminate charitable deductions altogether and I’d treat all corporate political/issue contributions as income to the shareholders.

Me too, it was a gesture that had to be made but seemed worthless (although now I hear there’s another group negotiating on this, it’ll probably be worthless too because Republicans aren’t willing to actually finance anything). I heard an interview on NPR this morning with Buttigieg, and she continually pressed him on whether Democrats are willing to go it alone with reconciliation, and were Democrats willing to come further toward Republicans to make a deal. Pete was good as usual, staying on message and saying that they want to make a deal if it’s possible but something has to be done. Then she talked to a Republican freshman rep, Carlos Gimenez (why him, he had nothing to do with these negotiations?). She didn’t press him at all about how the Republicans want to fund it with money that’s already slated to be spent somewhere else! It really felt like she pushed and pushed Pete but didn’t push Gomez at all. These reporters never ask “What is the money you want to spend on infrastructure from the Covid relief bill slated to be spent on? Which programs do you want to defund in order to fund infrastructure spending”? It makes me crazy that not one reporter will ask them this; they assume that because the money isn’t spent yet it’s fair game to redirect it.

The article falsely implies that wealthy individuals are taking special advantage of a tool not available to anyone else.
Which part don’t you agree with? Yes, everyone can buy stock, but Bezos’ billions in stock value add up to vastly more tax breaks than whatever amount of stock the average box store cashier can afford.
This is pretty standard dogma for democrats, and not just for the 2017 tax cuts. It applies to republican tax policy for the last 40 years.

@geg6: yes, this is one of those “technically correct, but . . . ” statements you get from apologists for the wealthy and the way the system is rigged to increase their wealth. A friend’s high school buddy runs a big hedge fund. From time to time, he sends my friend offers to “let him in” on some lucrative deal that normally requires something like a minimum $1m investment that my friend would not be able to satisfy. These deals sometimes have rates of return in 20% range, usually because they’re based on inside information, which, of course, is legally massaged to avoid SEC violations.

You obviously follow the older thinking, that a painting is “art” and so should be displayed so that it can be admired and add beauty to a space.
Current thinking — at least, among a large fraction of those who buy paintings — is that they are a place to park surplus funds, with reasonable expectation of getting a good ROI when the asset is sold. As such it’s far more important to store the asset under conditions that preserve it and minimize costs including taxes.
In a way I’m sorry NFTs aren’t taking off, because they might have taken over that role from art, allowing it to come out of the vaults and be admired.

At the time, many countries demanded that corporations pay a withholding tax on earnings repatriated to their world HQ. If the corporation could prove the actual tax was less than the withheld amount, they could get a refund. If it was more, the local tax authorities would have to make that case.
The point is: make sure some of the money doesn’t disappear into corporate coffers. Help the taxing country with cash flow during the period between withholding and any legal decision that reduces corporate tax liability to below the withheld threshold. Prevent at least some funds from being held indefinitely pending this or other taxable events.

Despite the difficulties, I could get behind a wealth tax. Real estate and personal property taxes are paid by many so the concept is not a hard sell. Boy, I just watched last night’s Rachel Maddow show, and she is not optimistic. She went through all the inexplicable things the Department of Justice is doing right now, and it was discouraging. Why aren’t they doing more about what’s happening in Arizona, where the Republicans are clearly breaking federal laws? Why do Democrats send so many sternly-worded letters, but not do much else? It’s crazy! I understand what the E. Jean Carroll thing is, and that they really didn’t have a choice about it, but some of the other stuff is discouraging. The Senate just confirmed Biden’s first judicial pick – the first one! I hope they have a plan to move quickly on those, because we are one senator away from Mitch McConnell having control of that again. Sometimes I wonder if the Democrats in the government understand how much urgency they need to have on things like this, and feel that they don’t. He fucked up the covid response enormously. And he implied repeatedly that it wasn’t a leak, it was purposeful. So let’s say there was an accidental lab leak of a natural virus – now what? Trump’s response doesn’t look better. And he made things worse by making accusations against China, making international relations worse and not getting anything for it.
So he flubbed the foreign policy portion of it too, even worse than he did in the more likely “not a lab leak” scenario.

Many years ago my mom was bitten by a tick. She kept going downhill and was getting weaker and weaker. Just after this, my dog got ticks and I got one off her (probably). The dog was diagnosed by the vet with ehrlichia. Pixie was on antibiotics for this for about 6 months. My mom was still going down so I looked up ehrlichia to see if it was zoonotic. It is (ehrlichiosis in humans) and mom had every one of the symptoms. Her doctor had sent her to every specialist she could think of to try to help her. Mom would get sick (bronchitis or something), they would put her on an antibiotic and she would get better for a while. When she finally convinced the doctor that she needed to be tested for a tick disease that wasn’t Lyme or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, it took 6 weeks to get the test results because there was only one or two labs in the country that could culture it and diagnose it in humans. They started my mom on doxycycline and on the first day, she said she felt a little better. The second day, she thought it was working. The third day, she didn’t feel like she was dying and she might actually make it. She was on doxycycline for 10 months before she got a negative test result.
You have to wait 30 days after the tick bite to build up enough of the germ to be detected (even in dogs). Don’t know where you live but my mom lived in southern Jefferson County Missouri, which according to the CDC, said was near the epicenter of the country’s tick disease (Boone County Missouri).

Less than a week later, he thought he was having a heart attack. Nope. It was the venom working its magic. He was in the hospital for 4 days after they removed about 4 inches of infection. They left a drain in and put him on IV antibiotics for it. The only good thing he said was you knew instantly when you were bitten.

We keep a prescription of doxycycline on hand for wife, who attracts ticks from me. I would say she gets half a dozen ticks for every one I get, and I tend to remove them even in my sleep nearly. She also got a series of spider bites on her leg that tore her up! She’s on Doxycycline right now.
The ticks ride in on the pups, if they’re on the dog long enough the oral anti-tick meds the dogs take will kill them, but sometimes they’re only on a dog for a few minutes, then loose in the house. Recently we’ve started having Lone Star ticks, which have a cute little white spot, the lone star, on their back. Not really cute, nothing about poisonous bugs is cute.
We drop the ticks into alcohol, then flush them in the morning.
You guys should put Taumaturgo in your pie filter, he isn’t ever going to say anything that you want to see. Works for me!!

Try this. these guys here show that from 4th quintile to max, the the effective total tax rate is about 30%. 4th quintile is under $100k,
while max is… max.
