Orange County made the yellow tier numbers! Only 18 people in ICU. Very happy. Went shopping for bathroom fixtures again. Everyone wore masks inside and stayed 6 feet apart in the cashier line. Much more comfortable. We’re still not dining inside yet and used a lot of hand sanitizer.

While I see why the CDC will permit Covid vaccination with other vaccines – because making it available when the child comes in for their more general vaccines will make it more convent – I know this is not going to go well. A good number of ‘antivaxxers’ are such because they don’t want multiple shots. Also, side effects can be worse causing people to blame the covid vaccine creating a lot of bad stories on the internet. This is just really bad policy.

@Barbara: India is one of those democracies that have been sliding toward illiberalism, with populism run amok, over the past decade plus. It is a global trend, others include Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Brazil, Israel, Japan, even Taiwan to an extent. Not to mention the US, the UK and Australia. This dismaying trend is less remarked upon these days because, in the new era of great power competition, these states are often grouped in the “good” side of the divide.
It does appear that Modi has been drawing inspiration from Xi and Putin, in constraining foreign NGOs, domination of media, maltreatment of minorities, etc.

Governor DeWine has taken another 950-degree turn and will now lift all restrictions (except for nursing homes) in three weeks. Ohio is still very far away from his previous benchmark of 50 cases per 100,000 over two weeks (last I heard, we were at 148 cases per). I can only roll my eyes and prepare for abuse from those around me who have ripped off their masks and are demanding everyone else do the same. Sigh.

Wednesday in the UK we had 2284 new cases. This is an INCREASE of 13.4% in the rolling 7-day average. Looking at the graphs, it seems the increase is being fuelled by case numbers in Scotland and, to a lesser extent, Northern Ireland. Robert Sneddon did mention a big cluster in Moray as few days ago. New cases by nation,
England – 1804 (down 313)
Northern Ireland – 113 (up 24)
Scotland – 345 (up 107)
Wales – 22 (down 8).
Deaths – There were 11 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease of 22.2% in the rolling 7-day average. All the deaths were in England.
Testing – On Tuesday, 11 May, 711,104 tests were conducted. This is an increase of 1.9% in the rolling 7-day average. The PCR testing capacity estimated by labs on this date was 645,811.
Hospitalisations – On Monday, 10 May 1121 people were in hospital. There were 138 people on ventilators on Tuesday, 11th. The rolling 7-day average for hospital admissions was down by 7.4%.
Vaccinations – As of 11 May, a total of 35,722,461 had received 1 dose of a vaccine and 18,438,532 had received both. In percentage terms this means that 67.8% of all adults in the UK had received 1 shot of a vaccine and 35% have had both.

Scotland — 270 new cases of COVID-19 reported and one death reported as of 2:00 p.m. local time when the Scottish Government website was updated.Test positivity rate is 1.2%.
Scotland is still on track for the Grand Re-opening on Monday 17th but the authorities are concerned about both the Moray regional outbreak as well as some worrying clusters of COVID-19 being reported in central Glasgow. The latter clusters are being specifically attributed to multi-home visiting after the recent relaxation of restrictions on such visits. It is thought the Glasgow cases are mostly the Indian variant of the disease which is a concern. Surge testing is in prospect with teams going door-to-door in the affected areas.
Vaccinations in Scotland are proceeding at a steady rate of about 40,000 per day, about half of these are first jabs and half second jabs now that a lot of the early first vaccinations have been “caught up”. Nearly everyone above the age of 65 has received both jabs in Scotland. I’ve not seen any reporting of vaccine hesitancy or much in the way of anti-vaxx protests here.
There are plans to hold some rugby international matches at Murrayfield stadium in Edinburgh in late June with limited fan attendance, I believe about 25% of capacity (ca. 17,000 or so in a stadium with a seating capacity of 67,000). I may be working these events as a steward so it will be interesting to see how it works out. The Scottish Rugby Union is also forward-planning some more matches in November which should be full capacity or thereabouts by that time. We’ll see.

My kid has an appointment for this afternoon; I’ll be taking her to get her Pfizer shot after school. I still have another week to go for Moderna shot #2.

@debbie: I think your numbers are out of date. According to data from Johns Hopkins, Ohio has a current daily average rate of 10.3 new cases per 100K. In my opinion, that’s still too high to remove all restrictions — Israel waited until they were down to 2 per 100K, and the UK is just now about to do it at 3.43 per 100K. The US as a whole is currently at 11.5.

About combining vaccines – I took the first dose of shingles vaccine a month after the second dose of Pfizer and it was the one that gave me the strongest reaction. Not that bad, one day feeling ill, but I would have been very unhappy if I had been dealing with a second reaction on top of it.
I don’t really see why anyone would want to rush that sort of thing. One can wait a couple of weeks.
debbie
@smith:
No, it’s 50 cases per 100,000 over two weeks. That number needed to remain the same for two weeks. From here, posted earlier today:
