I do so miss the Doctor.

That was wonderful. So joyful.

That was great.

Been listening to a lot of The Tallest Man On Earth because my vehicle’s audio player is attached to my iphone and it pulls it automatically and plays it on the commute. Kristian Matsson likes birch trees.

Someone will no doubt shoot me for this, but this is reminding me of Jimmy Buffett. For me, that’s a good thing!

I’m not sure which music goes with getting my second Pfizer dose today and a realization that my chips could be part of a custody battle between Bill and Melinda. Mom, Dad?
So I’ll go with a virtual session of the Seatbelts’ Space Lion from Cowboy Bebop.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/KPIX) — Everyone loves a good comeback story, and new Pittsburgh Steelers RB Najee Harris has a great one.
Not long before he was taken as the first-round draft pick by the Steelers, Harris returned to the homeless shelter where he and his family once lived.

BeauSoleil, baby.

Nothing problematic at all. The song has deep layers of New Orleans musical and linguistic* history. The Playing For Change group connects musicians around the world. There are deep musical connections between New Orleans and many African musical traditions. And this music inspires everyone. That’s all in the video. I don’t know what problem anyone could find in it.
* Google around sometime to find the various theories about how many languages are represented in the lyrics of “Iko Iko.”
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
I hate to be the one to ask, but why would this be problematic?

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Yeah, I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about Iko Iko – how can a song that makes you feel good like that be problematic?

I pulled out my Gipsy Kings last night and sweet mother of fun I love that group.
I also love these collaborations.

This is a lot of fun. Dunno if the link will work (you probably have to be logged into your Google account).

A more instrumentally-focused version, for some of you (and the haters know who they are.)
Geoduck
The song has been the subject of lawsuits over who actually created it and owns the rights, and was inspired by people dressing up like Native Americans, so yeah, there is some controversy lurking in the background. The Wikipedia article on it gives a rundown. It is a fun song, tho, no question.

Good news from the doctor today; clear margins and lymph nodes are negative!
Jackie
@Kayla Rudbek: WONDERFUL NEWS!!!?
raven
@Geoduck: “people dressing up like Native Americans” that’s a weak fucking description of the Mardi Gras Indian tradition.
“The Mardi Gras Indians named themselves after native Indians to pay them respect for their assistance in escaping the tyranny of slavery. It was often local Indians who accepted slaves into their society when they made a break for freedom. They have never forgotten this support.”

Summer, 72, three hippie types from Baltimore wandered into a New Orleans bar where the good Doctor was Night Tripping. Have been a fan ever since. Read a story about Dr. John quitting a Frank Zappa recording session once because Frank was anti-drug and the Dr. couldn’t smoke a joint at the piano.

@raven: For some musical elaboration of this, watch “Rumble: Indians in Rock” available on Prime. It is an excellent look at Native American influence on the music of America. If you listen to The Blues and its spawn you can hear it.
They do a good explanation of the New Orleans Indians.

Musicians have had a tough time during the pandemic and many have turned to is internet doing analysis and voice coaching on Zoom, Instagram, Youtube, and Patreon — where you can follow them for a small monthly fee, often just $1 or $2.
Here is Julia Nilon a singer and voice coach reviewing Filipina singer Morissette Amon’s Akin Ka Na Lang (will you be mine).

While my Navy ship was in Mobile Bay drydock for hull work, some of us hippie sailors went to a small arena across the bay in Mobile proper to see Dr John opening for Spirit. Dr John was amazing, won’t attempt to describe his set, but he strutted onto stage between a row of sidemen ramping and jiveing and showering him with glitter. He had a cane he used like a drum major, and a pouch of glitter he tossed back at the sidemen and girl singers.
After he did two sets, he announced that because the arena didn’t sell enough tix, Spirit was not going to appear. Show’s over.
There was a R&R riot, and many if not all the giant glass panels around the lobby of the arena were shattered by hoods using folding tables as battering rams.
My buddies and I fast walked away into the darkness, wanting to avoid the cops, who we could hear running with sirens in the distance as we fled into the night. Eventually we found a bar, ordered drinks and called a cab to ride back to the shipyard. Dr. John was a master of Zydeco — Rock and Roll, and I wished I could have seen him many more times.

There was a boyfriend back in the 90s of whom I remember very little except the fact that we once went to an excellent Dr John show.

@Kayla Rudbek: Congratulations! “Clear margins” is one of the sweetest phrases in medicine. I heard it nine years ago after they whacked out a cancerous chunk of my left kidney. The music in the OP gives a perfect joyous response.
Still with music, but in a very different style, here is a short choral piece that just turned up a few minutes ago. What makes it noteworthy is that the 21 voices + video were recorded separately (by the choristers, at home), then assembled together electronically.
ETA: it was an excruciating process for the singers, but it gives them hope that they will sing together again sometime in person.

@prostratedragon: also Mitchum is one scary mojo in that movie
and I was thinking of a different river scene that probably gave me nightmares when I was a kid… I think the first time I saw Shelley Winters in anything pre-Poseiden Adventure

Thank you. That was very interesting. That Lani Malmberg is a very smart lady. There are many more lessons here than just goats. And another thing — PBS is the only place where programs like this are produced.
prostratedragon
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: So many memorable images in that movie (cinematographer Stanley Cortez). Unfortunately it appears a remake was in the works as of last year, which couldn’t be beat for pointless exercises imo. This article gives a good idea why that could be so.
Now you have me wanting to watch The Poseidon Adventure for the first time in ages. References to earlier portrayals by actors are common, and sometimes those are presented as continuations or alternative futures for the earlier character. (Maybe a slight spoiler) Did Willa Harper avoid one fate only to meet it again down the line? (Hey, the picture is over 60 years old.)

That was a wonderful lesson and what makes it so fascinating is it is so intuitive. Even an ignoramus like me can immediately connect the dots.

@NotMax: Not only a bad pun, but utterly unoriginal. Somewhere in the Avuncular-Cosmic Archives I have a one-panel newspaper cartoon from at least 25 years ago showing backstage at the symphony with a silhouette of a beaver’s tail, with the (paraphrased) caption:

Nowhere claimed it was new. I’ve been using it for more than 50 years, and it certainly predates that.
