… Before Covid-19, Serum wasn’t a household name even inside the country. Now the unlisted company is India’s best hope to get out of its Covid-19 crisis. New cases tallied 392,488 in the past 24 hours; in Goa state 40% of tests are returning positive. The manufacturer’s monthly production of up to 70 million doses of Covishield, the local name for AstraZeneca’s (AZN.L) vaccine, accounts for 90% of nearly doses administered.
That makes complaints from the 40 year-old Poonawalla, son of the company’s founder, particularly distressing. In an interview with The Times newspaper, he claimed that tycoons and politicians are threatening him in order to secure jabs…
The root of the problem is New Delhi’s vaccine procurement strategy. India decided in April to allow state governments and private hospitals to purchase up to half of the vaccines stocks, although under the new plan they could end up paying double or more what government has paid. That effectively foists the unenviable responsibility of rationing a limited supply of life-saving vaccines onto private companies. It would be better if the government centralised distribution.
Politicians in some rich countries placed early orders for more jabs than they needed, giving manufacturers greater confidence to ramp up production. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration ordered slowly and only after vaccines were approved. Now India’s attempt to accelerate its vaccination drive will come at other’s expense. The COVAX facility, backed by the World Health Organization for example, was counting on Serum to help supply jabs to lower-income countries where case counts are also rising. Those export deals are now on hold…

US new COVID cases and deaths have been fairly stable, but the composition has shifted dramatically to new variants. Essentially, we are in a race between getting everyone vaccinated and new, more contagious variants that raise the chance of infection among the non-vaccinated.

The CDC weekly flu report has some bad news. Deaths from pneumonia have turned up the past two weeks, and the death numbers for a given week are typically reported very slowly and increase for two months afterwards. Unless the Biden administration has fixed the lag (very unlikely) we actually *are* in a substantial surge of COVID deaths and the relatively flat numbers are coming from reporting issues, presumably denialism in red areas. Probably similar for COVID cases.

Sunday in the UK we had 1671 reported new cases. This is a decrease of 10.2% in the rolling 7-day average but all figures need to be taken with a pinch of salt due to the usual weekend reporting delays, which is why I specified reported cases in this instance. New reported cases by nation,
England – 1377 (down 265)
Northern Irel;and – 69 (down 21)
Scotland – 146 (down 29)
Wales – 79 (did not report on Saturday).
Deaths – There were 14 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a reduction in the rolling 7-day average of 31.2% but weekend warnings apply here also. New deaths by home nation, England – 13, Northern Ireland – 1 and none in either Scotland or Wales.
Testing – Not updated at weekends.
Hospitalisations – Not updated at weekends.
Vaccinations – As of 1 May, a total of 34,505,380 people had received the 1st shot of a vaccine and 15,329,617 had had both. In percentage terms this means that 65.5% of all adults in the UK have had 1 shot and 29.1% were fully vaccinated.

Sad email from our veterinarian this morning. They will be shut down for the foreseeable future as most of the staff has COVID. Stayed open throughout the plague by keeping all humans out in their cars and coming masked to the parking lot to pick up their patients. They treated burned animals for free after the Labor Day 2020 fires. It’s a few weeks after general vaccine availability. Damn, they almost made it. Oregon has been one of the lucky states on COVID but it’s taken off in the last few weeks.

Scotland — 132 new cases of COVID-19 reported, 1.5% of tests were positive and no deaths reported.
This is a holiday weekend and some reports may have been delayed. I’ll wait until Wednesday to note any real trends from the announced numbers.
The vaccination program in Britain did not stop for the holidays. The health services are still concentrating on getting second vaccinations into older people mostly. The pace for these make-up jabs is picking up — my first vaccination was in early February, my second was last week with an interval of 11 weeks between them. A friend who is about 9 years younger than me is getting his second vaccination after only 9 weeks of waiting. Looking at the available data there is only a small fraction (maybe 15% or so) of people over the age of 65 in Scotland who have not had both vaccinations now.
