From The Knoxville News Sentinel:
Multiple people have been shot, including a Knoxville police officer, at Austin-East High School on Monday afternoon, the Knoxville Police Department posted on its Twitter account.
Two sources with knowledge of the situation who are not authorized to speak about it also told Knox News the shooting had occurred. One source said the situation is no longer “active.”
Police and emergency workers flooded the neighborhood around 3 p.m., and have blocked off access to the school and parts of the neighborhood.
The school has been locked down, according to Knox County Schools spokeswoman Carly Harrington.
Knox County Schools has established a reunification site for parents to connect with their children who attend the school. It is at the baseball field behind the school near Wilson Avenue and Hembree Street.
Not a lot of information/reporting on this yet. I’ll update as/if/when information comes in.

It is so sad that schools have to plan for “reunification” sites on a regular basis. I cannot even imagine the horrors parents go through, sitting around together in dread, feeling joy when their child is found to be alive, but terrible guilt that some of the people who you bonded with during the nightmare got or will get the worst news of their lives. It also keeps them away from the press, which is it good because the press are insensitive ghouls or bad that you can’t go on camera and scream at America that this has got to stop?

My buddy with a high school aged son in Knoxville checked in and this school is across town. Last time he was here was when the church shooting happened there.

I thought being taught at home via Zoom was the biggest danger ever known to students in K-12. Apparently, TFG was wrong about that. Huh.

Jesus. FUCKING. Christ.
The intransigence on any kind of gun control has made me an absolute gun-grabber.
Get rid of them all.

Crap.
Covid spared us of school shooting sprees for a year. And now we return to our regular programming, except for the fact Covid is very much still with us. This is not the combination I was hoping for.
And now we’ll have a new group of students and teachers and staff with PTSD for god knows how long.

I just can’t say anything… past understanding, completely.

Forever. They will have the PTSD forever. They will learn coping mechanisms but it will never completely go away. Believe me.
Elizabelle
@Mary G: I think that is going to be a factor in cracking down on guns.
Mass shootings happen constantly; it could be your kid next; little kids have to drill for this now as part of their in-person education.
American Mom is fed to the teeth with paranoid American Dad.
The only thing that paused school shootings was having the schools closed by a pandemic. Enough unnecessary death. Enough.

You can bet Southern states will take the very wrong conclusion here and now mandate teachers be armed. Just you wait. By the end of the month those bills will appear all over the Red South.

Four days ago, Tennesee’s “governor,” Bill Lee, signed “permitless carry” legislation that he’d personally championed.

There is a feedback loop between the police training Adam mentions in the previous post (and how it manifests itself with police shootings), and these mass shootings.

In 2016 the NRA spent some $30M to help put a sadistic sociopath in the White House, and for four years he championed white supremacy and police brutality. That’s why we have out of control cops and mass shootings, and the random murder of non-white citizens. The Orange Clown gave that behavior two thumbs up.

This ammosexual insanity must end.

@Mary G: Now I’m wondering if it will turn out one or more of the officers knew the victim, like Chauvin and Floyd. And what was that case where the officer claimed she thought she was in her own apartment? Was there some connection there?

@AnotherBruce: Same as it has been for the past 20+ fucking years.

@fancycwabs: Ohio Republicans introduced permitless concealed carry legislation two weeks ago. It’s passage is not certain, as some Republican legislative leaders are understandably skeptical. While Republicans have a large majority in the state legislature because of gerrymandering, this is a law that concerted public opposition might stop.

@Ken:
I don’t think so. She said she was too tired to realize she was entering the wrong apartment.

@Mike in NC:
Look, the NRA is evil and so is TFG, but out of control cops, mass shootings, and random murder of non-white citizens did not start in 2016. The big thing that has changed is that everyone has a networked video camera in their pocket, so those things are getting more public attention and scrutiny.
Geminid
@debbie: I’m just saying it might be stopped, based on a quick look at local reporting that indicated that Republican legislative leaders were not all on board yet.
Some advocates of this law said that because of a pending reform affecting gerrymandering, this might be their last chance to push permitless conceal carry through. I took that as an admission that they know they lack majority support, and may be relying on apathy on the part of citizens to make this lousy proposal law.

I went to high school in Knoxville and have a family reunion scheduled for the fall. After the Governor signed the permitless concealed carry, I do not feel safe travelling there. This does not even take into account all the people who will refuse the Co-vid vaccine and masks. While the south is especially culpable, my son went to the University of Colorado in Boulder and regularly shopped at the store where their mass shooting happens just a few weeks ago. When is this madness going to stop?
