Do you know this man?
Yesterday, some of the extremist insurrectionists that Trump had mobilized to overthrow the US Congress, the Constitution, and the constitutional order, had the goal of taking the Vice President, the Senate and House leadership, and other members of the Senate and the House and their staff hostage to either coerce them by the threat of force or the application of actual force to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election and reinstall Trump as president.
I heard at least 3 different rioters at the Capitol say that they hoped to find Vice President Mike Pence and execute him by hanging him from a Capitol Hill tree as a traitor. It was a common line being repeated. Many more were just talking about how the VP should be executed. https://t.co/fxHREouEWF

I just heard on CNN that he was seen extracting the flex cuffs from a storage container inside the chamber just before that video was taken. This is not to diminish any of the other crimes he committed. The same story on CNN had audio of the mob shouting to hang the VP.

The number of police departments reporting that officers participated is really disturbing primarily because it’s not surprising. I suspect the military knows how to handle their members.

@Adam L Silverman: isn’t it just…smh
Jim Clyburn pointed out that these people knew exactly where there were going. They knew exactly which way to go to get to certain areas in the buidling that no random looter should know how to get to easily.
So the question is HOW did they know and WHO did they know to give them pointers on where to go.
Martin
@lamh36: I have to believe that Fox lawyers can clearly see where the winds are blowing and told them to not take his calls. They’re already potentially in serious legal trouble. The voting companies can sue them out of existence. Their hosts could be exposed to sedition charges.
The only uncertain variable here is how bold is Biden/Garland going to be.
Adam L Silverman
@sanjeevs: Part of the reason DeVos resigned. They offered Trump the friends and family discount for his putsch and he was too cheap to hire Erik’s PRC paid for mercenaries.

If Scavino helped to coordinate this for Trump, it would explain why it is being reported that he’s being considered for (needs) a preemptive pardon. It would not surprise me to find out, given who he is friendly with – Roger Stone, Chuck “Rage Furby” Johnson, Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, etc – that Gaetz is in touch with that crowd too. Not going to happen. Requires 2/3 vote in either chamber to expel a member so lots and lots of GOP votes.
On the other hand, if they or their staffs are implicated in any sort of actual coordination or aiding and abetting this treason (as I suspect some are) then they face federal charges and that will be the DOJ under Merrick Gardner who I expect has no love lost for the GOP Senate.

@Martin: I think you’ll see a number of smaller incidents around the country over the next couple of weeks as his supporters sort themselves out. Some will drop off because “the prophecy failed” and just limp away. Others will continue along the current course. Some will go dead enders, which will itself split into three groups. Those who internally direct their anger and commit suicide or attempt it, those who externally direct it and engage in more attacks (lone wolf and collective), and those who do a bit of both. If you’re related to a Q nut or one of these hard core Trump/MAGA cultists and in close proximity, stay away. The intimate partner murder/suicides are going to spike.
For the inauguration, I think you’ll see an attempt at something big in the Capitol and, based on what I’ve seen on the social media feeds, a lot of these folks trying to use that as cover to do distributed attacks around the US. State capitols. State officials homes. Things like that.

It is a little jarring in the middle of all the militia crap. Plus I think the algorithm for targeting that ad is just a smidge off.
bluehill
@Martin: Putting my tinfoil hat on, seems like there were a small group of “professionals” seeking out certain targets and using the other joyriders as cover. They could have had some sympathizers within the capitol police, who ordered or openly let people in as seen in the videos. Also seems like certain repub leaders were aware that something was going to happen. Trump hints at it in his rally speech kinda of like when asked Russia to get the emails.

Still no briefing from Capitol Police or any other LE agency regarding details like that and apparently, no one has even bothered to ask.

I want these perps to be identified, but I’d prefer that it be done by law enforcement personnel rather than by the internet. Trump still has the pardon power and, although he appears to care only about himself, it is at least possible that, if he learns their names and ID’s, he’ll pardon them within the next 12 days. I’d prefer that law enforcement investigate them during that time and not release names and ID’s until after the inauguration. All the seditious insurrectionists should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and I want that to actually happen; not be pre-empted by a nonsensical Trump blanket pardon.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned, but the ease with which the goobers entered the building seems to smack of inside help–and the ease with which they found Jim Clyburn’s “other” office, and the location where the EC certificates SHOULD have been, seems to bear that out. One thing on the cops giving directions to Schumer’s office. The story said that the insurrectionists asked for directions and got them, but never found the office. This gives me the sense that maybe the police officers were not giving correct directions. If I were in that situation, I’d send the yo-yos on a wild goose chase.
The crowd had been screaming about killing cops, and tragically did succeed. Being polite, taking selfies, opening doors, seems to have been a somewhat successful strategy to keep the thugs moving and confused, away from where the Congress was hidden, while waiting for the National Guard and FBI to arrive.
There needs to be a huge reckoning with our police forces and what they have become, but .I don’t think all the stories we are hearing are what actually happened.

@Adam L Silverman: According to my friend at FB, there’s a parallel system that allows them to give LEO a login that lets them view one or more accounts in realtime. It’s not really sufficient to extract the data from one account because social media relies so much on connecting data from different accounts and seeing who you are following, or what they are replying is important. It can show information that you would normally only be able to access from your account, plus a bunch of other information that you can’t see in a regular FB account such as location tracking of devices that are accessing the account, etc.
In a lot of cases they don’t want the account locked because they want to see the person interacting with the account, trying to remove evidence and so on. But none of it ever really deletes – it just gets hidden from view.

@Chetan Murthy: Nope, didn’t need to be. He’d been retired for a while. It’s rare that it happens, but every couple of years it happens. I’ve read stories in our base paper, as well as AF Times/Military Times, of things like this happening for various offenses.
But that’s the thing; it can and should happen. Best part? They lose all the benefits. Retirement pay? Gone. Base privileges? Gone. Medical benefits? Gone. So if you want to be a seditious traitorous fuck, go for it. But be prepared for when the consequences catch up. Idk, maybe we’d have a better officer/enlisted class if people knew their fucking bullshit would have these consequences post service. Idk. Something for down the road.

I don’t know how you monitize a TV app. I guess by filling your content with ads and maybe doing subscriptions. But I think pay cable is dying quickly. Just like paid newspapers. Our local fiber provider is called Ziply which bought out Frontier which came from Verizon I think. Anyway, they aren’t even doing any new cable subscriptions, it’s all just fiber internet and they will sell you the cord-cutting packages to get the online streaming network channels if you want them. I still have a legacy cable box but if I were a new subscriber I would only get internet service. We still have Comcast in the neighborhood as well, but they are slower so most people get the Ziply fiber
In the future my Samsung TV will probably have a damn “Trump” App. The horror.

As few days ago, I know mistermix pointed out John Judis had some problematic posts – well he just posted a doozie on TPM: https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/democrats-impeachment-is-a-political-trap
I skimmed over it – I have no idea what world Judis lives in – we just saw a violent insurrection and he’s talking about Trump and attention? WTF
mrmoshpotato
Remember kids – when committing the federal crime of trying to overthrow the United States government, it’s best to CROSS SEVERAL STATE LINES! Idiots.
mrmoshpotato
Who? Who needs to be slapped with his (most likely his) own skeleton?
Chetan Murthy
@The Limper: Thanks for pointing it out. I’m a subscriber, and have written a sternly-worded letter to TPM. I’m sure that’ll do the trick! Ha! But seriously, yeah, that’s *nuts*.

And, of course, Ukraine.

Jackal-tifa in action?

@Enhanced Voting Techniques: IIRC there were some serious incidents of antisemitic craziness at USAFA against Jewish cadets. Pretty harrowing stuff.

@rikyrah:
Trump was pressing his lackeys to object to state certificates so the targets would be in the building. Timing seemed to be an issue/concern, so they came up with the bullshit votes as a means to lengthen the attack window.

@Mary G: Michelle FTW!

@Mary G:
It’s 2:17 in the morning, I am reading about the attempt at a violent overthrow of the U.S. government — and that made me laugh out loud. Thank You.

@VeniceRiley:
I really wonder when it started to sink on on this dimwit that yes, he is in a shitpot of trouble I’d imagine there are any number of assholes
peoplewondering when the knock is going to come at their door at this point. It’s one thing to buy a plane ticker and pay for a hotel room, it’s a whole different level of trouble to pay attorney fees to have yourself defended in federal court. And the Justice Department is going to be after scalps.You bought the ticket, folks, complete with pictures and video. Now take the ride.

@LeftCoastYankee: if Trump is out, and it’s a new congress, does there need to be a trial? Any BJ lawyers know?

My wife’s plan for getting the vaccine out quicker.
You get your $2000 stimulus check after you get your covid shot.
Mary G
Ivanka’s on Parler shilling for contributions to Trump Media and bragging they’ve already sold $100,000 coffee mugs. How the mighty have fallen. At the beginning of Twitler’s term she was pushing a $10,000 bracelet from her jewelry line, now it’s something that costs $1.59 to make that they get $15 at most for.
Mary G
@jl: Yes, he can’t run for any Federal office again, loses his Secret Service protection, pension, health care insurance, and funds for an office and presidential library. Cuts off a huge income stream.
Chetan Murthy
@Kent: If there were enough vaccines, I’d agree with her. But there aren’t (yet). And won’t be for a long time (sadly). I mean, we want our mom to get vaccinated as soon as possible, but the earliest is probably late Feb. Can’t delay these lifeline payments that long. Honestly, people needed ’em last week.
Geminid
@jl: I think there still can be a trial after trump leaves office. Consequences would be mostly symbolic except that he could be barred from further office. But now I see Mary G has got the real scoop.
MisterForkbeard
@The Limper: His one point that makes sense here is that he thinks Impeachment is kind of a trap that will backfire on Dems. I don’t agree with it, but here’s the argument:
Trump did a lot of bad stuff. But once he’s gone (or neutralized and about to be gone) it makes them vulnerable to charges of vengeance and so on while the country is suffering through Covid and so on. Basically, that it runs the risk of derailing a bunch of good things and that Dems will get blamed.
Again, don’t agree and I think it’s necessary. But I do think that’s valid.
Enhanced Voting Techniques
@LeftCoastYankee: Yes, how clueless does that guy get. Wednesday maybe have been the stupidest coup ever with no chance in hell of succeeding, but it still was a coup. It’s pretty clear the hard core Trumpest are also hell bent on wrecking any attempt to get the pandemic under control.
Kent
@Chetan Murthy: she was joking. But she is also a primary care doc and right now wasting time dealing with idiot nurses who are skeptical of the covid vaccine because of bullshit they read on the internet. These are RNs with 4-year degrees in non-MAGA Washington State. She is sick and tired of the bullshit.
She is like “let’s stop wasting time and just put out massive 24/7 drive through covid vaccine sites and push it out as fast as it arrives in this state and stop dicking around with who meets what complicated criteria for being 3rd in line and such” There shouldn’t be any vaccine sitting around overnight.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@jl: It’d be the same Congress, so no problem.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Kent: I don’t need to be bribed to get jabbed, I’ll be first in line when they offer. But I do need the cash.
Kent
I actually agree with Judis. Impeachment is a trial not an up or down vote and the Trump people and assholes like Cruz will drag it out for days or weeks.
We are basically fucked and have to hope that the white house and pentagon have bubble wrapped him and sheltered the levers of power from his worst impulses. Like if he wants to bomb Iran the Pentagon comes back with. We are right on it sir, but we need 5 days to clear out our assets in Tehran and another 6 days to re-position our carrier fleet to avoid the fallout and our treaties require us to consult with allies to avoid breaking international law so that will take some time but we will be right back here with the final decision memo with the final GO/NO-GO decision for you as soon as we can. Bureaucracies can move slow when they want to. I used to work in one.
Martin
@Enhanced Voting Techniques: That ‘odd’ was much more sarcastic in my head than came across in the post.
Chetan Murthy
@Kent:
She’s right about this. And if there’s extra vax in your area, I’m quite sure that it would be easy to get it into arms: just advertise on NextDoor, and wait for the thrum of pounding feet, eh? Here in SF, I’m quite sure that they’d be oversubscribed in seconds.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@MisterForkbeard: After the last 9 months of watching folk about masking, the only thing some folk understand in punitive measures. Trump and the Republicans are in that group. Unless they get kicked in the pants and HARD, they’ll keep on doing this shit. We tried “look forward not back” before, and here we are.
Martin
@VeniceRiley: Yeah, CEO of a digital marketing company. This is turning out to be an insurrection of privileged white people that seem to think that overthrowing the government will earn them some points on their license and a small fine.
If Biden is serious about racial justice, they’ll be charged as if they were jihadists.
EmbraceYourInnerCrone
@rikyrah: oh no. That’s terrible
not commenting about any of the rest of this right now. Sixth person at work just tested positive. And I am one day post op from surgery and can not deal with the news right now. I hear about from my husband anyway. We are both military retirees (Navy) and he is so angry I am afraid for his health.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Kent: That’s not the point, as I noted above, there needs to be a penalty for trying to overthrow the government. If there’s no penalty for that, then we might as well just give up and let Trump be King. As far as Ted Cruz goes, the first order of business when the Dems take over is to expel Ted, everybody hates him anyway.
Kent
I had the chance to hang out with the marine embassy guards in Guatemala when I was in the Peace Corps in the 80s. They had a massive block-long gated luxury compound a couple blocks from the embassy in a posh section of Guatemala City. It was like a big frat house with a big weight room and pool and with hired cooks and maids. They spent all their time working out and watching TV and playing video games when they weren’t on duty. They would hold big parties but for security reasons I think only Americans would show up so they were always inviting Peace Corps girls to go hang out at the pool and they would bring us guys with them.
I don’t think those guys really ever got out of their compound. They weren’t exactly driving around the country in jeeps doing development work with campesinos and learning about Guatemalan culture.
Martin
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Cruz and Hawley won’t be expelled. They won’t get the ⅔ votes needed. Same for the ones in the House.
Garland needs to charge them with sedition.
Mary G
@EmbraceYourInnerCrone: I hope you can rest and stay safe. Hoping for a swift recovery.
MisterForkbeard
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Right, though I think maybe some other kind of punitive measure might conceivably work. We already know we can’t (and couldn’t ever, apparently) have gotten the impeachment through before Trump leaves.
Is there any alternative? Can’t hit him with a bill of attainder. Maybe request a special prosecutor?
Chetan Murthy
@Martin:
Well, that always was his base, right? His voters had an average income that was higher than Hillary or Biden voters. The whole “white working class” was just “white uneducated”. One-truck contractors, owners of a few restaurants, car salesmen, etc. It was always clear that they weren’t all that poor.
EmbraceYourInnerCrone
@Mary G: thank you. It’s kinda messed up that I am happy to be on short term disability for two months so I don t have to go to work but there it is…I may end up blocking some relatives because of the coup. Not listening to the Can t we all get along people anymore

He is sitting on a 250 million dollar leadership PAC that he grifted n 2 months and can use for all those things (except running for office) so I am sure he feels he came out ahead. Only losers go to libraries anyway.
Another great deal made by trump!

@Adam L Silverman: Does Biden have any power/authority/ability in how security arrangements are handled or who is providing it for the inauguration? It seems like an extreme risk for him and Kamala Harris. it seems a perfect setup to get at them both — as well as many others on some RWNJ’s death list.
I assume as Biden is not the president he would have no power or authority regarding security until he is sworn in.
Danielx
@MisterForkbeard:
Is necessary, and if positions were reversed Republicans wouldn’t waited around for any 25th amendment bullshit. They would have filed impeachment articles in the same session that ratified electoral college votes. Fuck a bunch of noise about violating norms, other more urgent business, etc.
And they would be right. A complete spinner has control of 1,750 nuclear weapons any of which he can deploy at will at his sole command, and there is nobody to say him nay. There is no more urgent business than getting him out of that position as soon as possible.
Chetan Murthy
@ballerat:
The Fucker was trying to gin up participants for another try at autogolpe on the 17th: that’s what moved Twitter to perma-ban him. Yeap, I agree 100% with you, and I cannot fathom why Biden would want a public open-air inauguration. Or why he would allow for himself and VP-elect Harris to be in the same place at the same time (or with Speaker Pelosi) until after they’ve had a chance to take firm control of the government and ensure that their own people are in place.
It’s a really, really dangerous time.
Kent
@Chetan Murthy: Under the constitution, if Biden is assassinated before the 20th then Harris becomes president. If they are both killed then Pelosi becomes president. There is no legal pathway for Trump to retain power past the 20th no matter what the crazies do. He is done.
In any event, the Secret Service is not the Capitol Police. They know what the fuck they are about.
Chetan Murthy
@Kent: One thing Shitler is good at, is dragging along his co-conspirators until they pass a threshold of criminality, and they can’t go back. I can imagine him trying to assassinate enough of our incoming chain of command, that his GrOPer allies are forced to go along with him in a coup. I mean, the Constitution is so much toilet paper to him.

@Kent: When I was growing up we had a US Master Sergeant from a nearby US base and his family move into a house in our street.
This caused quite a stir as, despite the size and nearness of the base, no-one remembered anything like that happening before.
I remember my Mum talking to his wife who said they always liked to get to know the country they were posted to and living among the population was a quick and easy start but most of her husband’s colleagues thought they were nuts!

A trial is not required. McConnell was reported to consider whether or not to hold a trial last year. Ultimately, in standard cynical fashion, he chose to but with no witnesses. The majority controls the process, so Cruz will have his 5 minutes. If the senate actually takes it up while Mitch is still in control, I doubt he’ll want a circus.
trnc
I assume the transition team is responsible for security and has the authority they need to set it up.
I wonder if it would be better to have DT there for security insurance, but they’d have to put him in a soundproof plexiglass box with a curtain they could drop when he starts trying to get attention.

@Danielx: Again, not trying to minimize what he did, just sharing more, hopefully reliable, information I heard that CNN reported an eyewitness account of their own reporter. Maybe I should not have mentioned it at all. There’s plenty of awful to go around.
