Cermet
The very last link you have I think is both the best and most significant one; that in NYC fewer are dying is significant because its shows that even for areas the rate of infection is growing, deaths from Covid-19 are not tracking thanks to better treatment methodologies. That is both hopeful and a concern – a concern that in many places the hospitals are being overwhelmed and this could prevent the same level of quality service that patients in NYC are getting. Controlling this virus to keep hospital beds from reaching capacity is critical.

Another day with zero new cases and zero deaths in Victoria. We’re all feeling simultaneously delighted about that and nervous that it can all go to hell again quite easily. Masks are still required and there is still a 25km limit on movement in Melbourne (the latter until 8 November), but shops and restaurants and cafes and pubs are open again, albeit with limits on numbers. Fragile relief, I suppose would be the best way to describe the vibe.

Trump’s claims that doctors are doing it for the money leave some ambiguity. He could be claiming that doctors are re-classifying deaths from other causes as COVID-19.
I suspect, though, that the message to the faithful is more “Doctors are killing COVID-19 cases for the bounty, so when your family members die, take revenge on the doctors and don’t blame me.”

Welcome to your daily report from a grey and wet United Kingdom (possibly that should read, DISunited Kingdom). A bit late (it’s 2pm here) but I slept in.
Yesterday we had 24,405 new cases. This is about 1000 more than the day before. Nevertheless, the trendline is still showing a reduction in the rate of growth. Cases by home nation were:
England – 20,821 (up by just under 1000)
Northern Ireland – 566 (down by @250)
Scotland – 1281 (up by @150)
Wales – 1737 (up by @300).
As of yesterday we have had 989,745 cases in total since the start of the pandemic.
Deaths – There were 274 new deaths. 226 of these were in England, 9 in Northern Ireland, 28 in Scotland and 11 in Wales. During the week ending Friday, 16th October 761 deaths had COVID registered as a cause of death.
Testing – 347,626 tests were processed out of a capacity of 480,961.
Hospitalisations – Yesterday we breathed the 10,000 marker with 10,708 people in hospital (as of Wednesday, 28th October) 975 were on ventilators as of Thursday, 29th. Both are trending upwards and the curve is steeper.
General – The Government has halved it’s target of around 2 million tests a day by the end of the year, apparently due to delays in the roll out of new tests. They are, however, pressing local Health Officers to adopt a new DIY saliva test which supposedly gives results in about 30 minutes. Also, despite slagging off people who suggested it earlier, Johnson is reportedly, considering a second lockdown in England for November in order to “save Christmas”. So, watch this space.

@Brachiator:
This makes good sense, inside a home preventing transmission of any virus, from colds, flu, measles, mumps, to the Trump Plague is extremely difficult, even in a large house with individual bedrooms and separate bathrooms.
Is it even possible to isolate a potential Trump Plague victim in a small apartment with 5-7 people in 3 rooms? I don’t see how that can be done in the home at all. Perhaps we need to put these people up in a Hilton-level hotel for their entire incubation period, with food delivery included, all at no cost the the patients?
Surely less expensive to put a potentially infected person up in a hotel for a week or two than to treat 3-4 people in a hospital!
J R in WV
I want to thank Anne Laurie AND all of the international Balloon-Juice Jackals for contributing to this valuable information set on a daily basis for months now. I don’t really know of another source of this fine-grained data from all over.
Obviously we don’t have every nation represented, but we do have spot coverage from widely separated locations, which I find really valuable.
My take-away, wear a fookin’ mask any time you leave your nest, all the time. Never eat at a restaurant until the Trump Plague is over and done with.
The only meal in months my wife and I have shared that I didn’t cook was after her last dentist appointment. We drove over to the best Thai place, I ordered carry out — wearing my mask. They delivered it to the car door, and we ate in our car, out in the sunshine and fresh breeze, with no one around. It was sublime. Pad Thai chicken, wonderful.
They are apparently making it on carry out / delivery so far, which is a blessing. A tiny 6 table place, they were doing far more carry out even when the sit down part of their place was fully functional. Great food.

At a minimum, they and everyone in the household need to wear a mask, but especially the infected/potentially infected person; masks work best as source control according to mechanical studies. They can come off in the shower, but turn the bathroom fan on and run it for an hour afterwords, open windows and ventilate the room with fresh air whenever possible, etc.
Best to put them in their own hotel room or equivalent, I agree.
