No complacency before November 3rd, etc etc, but this is *not* a man who believes he’s gonna win. So, if nothing else, you can take consolation in the fact that we’re making him miserable. More miserable.

@Kent: I’m stressed out and exhausted. And insomnia makes it all so much worse. The election will only cure some of my woes. If I could vote my way out of the fact that my eldest is depressed and failing his senior year of high school, I would. I just wrote a diatribe email to his teachers who pretty much stopped teaching the online students (which seems to be just my kid now) once everyone else went back on campus. Of course both the elementary school and the high school have already had their first positives on campus, proving me right to keep both my kids online, but the complete lack of instruction and structure is pissing me off. At least my 10 year old is getting face time with his teachers but he ends most days by 1 or 2 and then he’s in my hair while I’m trying to work. And I should be grateful that I have a job where I can work from home but the 10-12 hour days are wearing thin, but my industry is booming right now. And I’m so frigging tired of being in my house. I’ve been here since March. I’d give an appendage to eat out at a restaurant. I’m just done with 2020, so frigging done.
PS:. If any of you say anything condescending to me, I swear by holy baby jeebus on a cracker, there will be blood.
Geminid
@West of the Rockies: I watched them in Virginia. The mainstream, Chamber of Commerce types running the republican party welcomed the tea party movement as new blood. But then the tea party types knocked out Congressman Eric Cantor in a primary for the Va. 7th in 2014. The year before they demanded and got a state convention, so they could get Ken Cucchinelli nominated for governor. His rival, Lieutenant Gov. Bill Bolling, had won eight straight elections for various offices, but he knew he couldn’t compete in a caucus and convention system, and did not even try. In 2016 two fairly young republican congressmen-Rigell, VA2nd, and Hurt, VA5th retired. I believe they did so because they knew they would have to run the caucus convention gauntlet. They were both wealthy businessmen, too proud to kiss tea party ass. The tea party people now call themselves “constitutional conservatives,” and in alliance with evangelical dominionists successfully challenged my republican VA 5th Congressman, again using the caucus/convention route. The Republican nominee calls himself “a Biblical and Constitutional Conservative.” The VA 7th and 2nd are now held by Democrats, and it looks like the 5th will be too. The republican insurgents that came out of the tea party were not strong enough to wreck the Commonwealth, but they’ve just about wrecked the Virginia republican party

@Achrachno: Well, it took two cycles, 2017 and 2019, but Virginia Democrats now control the General Assembly, having beaten the republicans on a district map the republicans themselves gerrymandered. Demographic changes were a factor, but the lurch to the right by the republicans also played a role.
Achrachno
@Geminid:
That’s what happened here in CA. Republicans lurched right in response to demographic change (they hate the sound of Spanish!) and the people did not follow them. This state wasn’t always so bright cheery blue.

@Geminid: This year the Virginia legislature passed some good gun safety laws, and prohibited guns on the Capitol grounds. And in 2017, Governor Northam was able to push through Medicaid expansion that has extended coverage to 400,000 Virginians. Northam did this with help from Republicans- 10 Delegates and three Senators. Three of those Delegates were successfully primaried from the right last year. And Senator Jill Vogel (Culpeper) would have been an obvious choice to replace 5th District Congressman Scott Garrett when he abruptly retired in 2018, but she did not even try- I suspect because she knew her vote for “Obamacare” was anathema to the cranks that dominate the republican party in the 5th.
