Yippee, us!
Baud
Bittersweet, since now I see how little you did for Baud! 2020!
Kudos to you, man.
Tim C.
The people here are Good. Some Lawful Good, some Neutral Good, some Chaotic Good. But Good.
SiubhanDuinne
That’s amazing, awesome, astounding! Back pats and huzzahs all around!
Jean
AMAZING!
MazeDancer
Well done, Doug!!
For our 2nd milion, could we get Mike Espy in our thermometers? There are some people looking for him in Dave’s thread.
DougJ
@MazeDancer:
you got it
Tom Levenson
Between my wife and I we’ve been giving with a kind of reflexive panic, adding up to more than our budget–which as of Friday has been thrown out; for the duration.
She’s hit the donate button several times this a.m., so in honor of this milestone, I’m just going to drop a token donation on someone on our list. Normal panic giving will resume tomorrow.
Yutsano
@Tom Levenson: I wonder if we’re leaving behind Espy just because it’s Mississippi. We should probably rectify that oversight.
Chetan Murthy
@Tom Levenson:
You’re not alone. I’ve been here since Nov 2016. Dug into retirement savings, b/c becoming a refugee is even *more* expensive.
Tom Levenson
@Yutsano: My wife dropped some on Espy this morning. I think we should be doing massive retaliation in the races we are up in or even…and then once those have as much as they can deploy reach for as many stretch races as we can.
Central Planning
Does anyone else think that republican senators that say “we won’t confirm a SC judge before the election” are just splitting hairs and will happily do it after the election but before inauguration?
WaterGirl
Go BJ! Go Doug!
Sorry, Baud, we’ll do better next time.
Baud
Espy came close in 2018. Got 46.4% of the vote.
ETA: of course, different electorate in a presidential election year.
MazeDancer
@DougJ: Wonderful! Thanks!
Espy is within 5. And GOTV will make all the difference. Which, even in MS, costs $$.
Spanish Moss
Thanks for shepherding our giving Doug! I like the small doses of regional race news, and the opportunity to give small amounts often — it always lifts my spirits a little when I do.
WaterGirl
@Central Planning: Yes! I said in an earlier thread that every person within earshot of them – and I’m looking at you, journalists and politicians – should be asking for specifics.
Will you – under any circumstances – vote for any SC nominee that was not put forward by the person who wins the election in November?
There are only two options: YES OR FUCKING NO.
Omnes Omnibus
@WaterGirl: Baud got every penny that he deserves.
WaterGirl
@Omnes Omnibus: Pistols at dawn!
Baud
@WaterGirl: Will you be my second?
Omnes Omnibus
@WaterGirl: That’s awfully early. Could we do 10:30 instead?
Baud
@Omnes Omnibus: I’ve got brunch at 10:30.
Omnes Omnibus
@Baud: And I am booked all afternoon. Oh well.
Cheryl Rofer
WELL DONE, ALL!
And special thanks to Dougj!
WaterGirl
@Baud: Absolutely!
@Baud: @Omnes Omnibus:
Made me laugh.
WaterGirl
@Omnes Omnibus: Set your damn alarm!
Omnes Omnibus
I am hearing rumors that Collins is now saying that the Senate needs to be consistent and that the winner of the election should pick the nominee. Nice if true, but I don’t trust her.
Omnes Omnibus
@WaterGirl: Not for dawn. Do you know how early that is?
Aleta
Thanks Doug. To have someone I trust offering info about where I can donate for a reasonable chance to make a difference, and then keep describing the picture as it shifts—it’s such a cool thing you do here. In the last four years I feel more connected nationally thanks to you.
Sandia Blanca
Yay for all of us budget-busters! And LOL to Baud, Omnes, and WaterGirl.
Eljai
@Baud: Pistols after brunch! Doesn’t have quite the same ring…

You all did it. I ain’t done shit.

Watching this from quite a distance, it looks like the Stonewall riots.
You’re coming around to bully us when we are mourning? Oh, hell no!
Chetan Murthy
@Aleta:
I don’t donate thru ActBlue (I wrote a raft of checks a couple of weeks ago instead), but rely on DougJ’s guidance just like a lot of other commenters.
Thank you, DougJ, for all your hard work. And I gotta say, $1m …. aren’t the commentariat owed a few pics of your bouncing baby boy (who will soon be towering over you)?
Ruckus
I give directly to the candidates, all of whom use Act Blue and I’m not wealthy enough to give much, but I give what I can. But none of my $ have gone through the Act Blue accounts on BJ so that’s money not counted. And there are of course more candidates than I can afford to support, which I’d imagine is not all that unusual so I have to pick and choose.
Jinchi
A million dollars! Hmmmm…. We’re not gonna catch you on a yacht off the coast of Saint-Tropez are we?
Amazing job guys.

@Central Planning: No, but I think Mitch McConnell can count votes (most of the time) and is releasing those he can.

The last two digits is me this morning. Three small donations + tips. ActBlue deserves it this election.

Thanks, DougJ!
I just kicked in decent chunks to the people with a middling chance — not the no-hopers (alas) like Hegar and McGrath, not the people looking solid like Kelly and Gideon, but all of the toss-ups and the Dem medium leads got some love from me.
Mr Murthy — I appreciate your contributions to blog discussions, and also your contributions to our political system. I hope you can call the US home for a few more decades, and feel good about it, too.
Mai Naem mobile
Major props to Doug. That is awesome.
JoyceH
But I’m hearing there’s a plan for that. If the Republicans try to rush through a vote on a Trump nominee in the lame duck, ESPECIALLY if Biden wins the election, House Democrats can – impeach Trump again! Thereby tying up the Senate to prevent the SC vote. Personally I love the idea – just ups the recognition of the universal loathing that Trump has so easily earned.
mrmoshpotato
No, fucknuts. Reaganism was a declaration for war on America, and you fucknuts spent decades reveling in it.
As Driftglass and bluegal have put it, we’re not in the 4th year of the Trump presidency. We’re in the 40th year of the Reagan Revolution.
The fucking Rethuglican party has been working on destroying this country for a long time.

I’ve got my setup off the BJ as well, but I get a bunch of my info about where to go from you here.
That’s an incredible number! Well done, Jackals.

I’ve been largely supporting WisDems this cycle, but I just kicked in for MT and KS Senate races. (And I’m in for Espy, too, when that thermometer goes up.)
Thanks, as always, to Doug & Co for coordinating all of this! Let’s give Biden a strong Democratic Senate to support his agenda!
WaterGirl
@Jinchi: I just wrote to Doug and said the people demand photos!

I just gave quite a substantial contribution to my own Congressional candidate, even though I’m pretty sure he’s a no-hoper. I live in VA 1st district, and since I’ve lived here, the GOP incumbent only leaves office when they die. (Literally. The last two before the incumbent died in office.) In 2018, the district maps were redrawn by a court, since an adjacent district was too blatantly gerrymandered. I think that helps our district be a bit more Dem-leaning, but in 2018 with the new map, the Dem got 44% of the vote, which was the best a Dem has done in the 1st for decades.
I didn’t vote in the primary because I was too COVID-paranoid, and in their infinite wisdom, the primary voters chose a Pakistani-born Muslim author and activist. In Northern Virginia, he might stand a chance, but in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula? Slim to none.
But I gave him a pretty good chunk of change – I like his spunk.
So – if anyone enjoys supporting lost causes, throw a couple bucks to Qasim Rashid for VA’s 1st.

Wowowowow!!! This is awesome ????????

@WaterGirl: Exactly, and since I have been out of the army for over 28 years, I don’t do that.

I have used the B-J Actblue donation links several times, but mostly we donate via links in emails or on candidates’ sites. So most of our donations are not in that glorious total. Congrats to DougJ AND all the other jackals who pitched in.
So proud of the honorable response here, and throughout the whole Democratic party for that matter, to the foul terror Drumpf is fomenting.
And watching the front page of Actblue to see their grand total soaring by the second is so reassuring and calming, I recommend it highly for relaxation!

CNN are saying that Lamarr Alexander has issued a statement supporting Trump’s nomination going ahead. They were saying he was a possible 3rd Republican vote against but one commentator said they weren’t surprised as he was close to the Turtle.
Chetan Murthy
In the spirit of sharing … I gave probably more than I should have, to campaigns in my former home state of Texas. I might not feel safe visiting, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t decent people who’re fighting the good fight. And if we don’t help ’em, Texas’ll never turn Blue, I figger. I sent some money to Annie’s List (female candidates all over the state at all levels) and the Texas Organizing Project (they’re the folks who went door-to-door registering (esp. Latinx) voters to turn Harris County Blue, a while back). And, y’know, to my Mom’s county’s Dems, and also to the state party in honor of Juanita Jean’s.
I know it’s probably hopeless. But …. one of these days, there’ll be a bench deep enough, and a party organization strong enough, to take Texas Blue. Sigh.
guachi
I’ll chime in to say donating to Espy is a good idea. He has raised almost nothing, $1.5 million last time I checked, so donating will go farther than giving anything to no-hoper McGrath.

At WaterGirl’s urging, here is my proposal:
A statue of DougJ, preferably replacing one of the most, um, “blessed” (as in “bless his heart”) Confederate monuments.

@Sloane Ranger:
Lamar Alexander is a lying, corrupt shill. To quote a tweet from my niece:
Splitting Image
@Geminid:
Hegar isn’t exactly a no-hoper, but she’s more likely to win if the Democrats pull ahead in enough races that Republicans despair of winning and their vote deflates across the country than by closing the gap herself.
On the other hand, as with O’Rourke, Hegar’s campaign may be instrumental in winning next time around, as well as winning in the state house. If Hegar has enough coat-tails to help even four or five state candidates across the finish line this year, then it will be well worth it even if she loses.
I think either DougJ or Watergirl posted a list of candidates for the Texas state house who could use some support awhile back. That might be worth revisiting. Might also be worth doing something similar for Florida. Remember that this is a redistricting year and gaining or losing control of the big states will have a lot of repercussions over the next ten years.
Baud
@Sebastian: That tweet is obviously misinformation.

I wonder if he’s allowing for Trump. After he loses, he’s bound to lash out in all directions including the Senate. Maybe a few Senators, lame duck or not, won’t appreciate being called losers and whatever else bubbles out of Trump’s pie-hole, and will decide to screw him over.
Splitting Image
@Central Planning:
Depends. What they’re proving is that they are cowards. Cowards can be pushed one way or the other depending on which way the wind blows. Put some fear into them and they will cave. At the moment they are afraid of Donald Trump and have faith that he will save their asses, which is to say they are stupid too.
Also, congratulations to everyone for hitting the million mark in such a short time, and to DougJ for organizing it. Well done.
Jeffro
People, quit stressin’ over RBG’s replacement or the evil machinations of McConnell and trumpov…we have so many, many options here, not the least of which is to wipe out the GOP this November.
After all, the people are with us: SCOTUS is now a DEM issue, not a GOP one(!)
I will say this for trumpov: he managed to move this country off of being a 50-50 nation, that’s for sure ;)

@Omnes Omnibus:
I used to start work at 7am and lived 35 miles away, in LA. Yeah you get up with/before the sun many, many days of the year doing that. And in the navy you often get up at 0 dark thirty, just because your post floats and moves 24 hrs a day. My department was better than one in engineering, who had such a short crew they worked 6 on, 6 off, as long as the boilers were lit. In a compartment with 2, 1200 lb steam boilers. To say it was hot down there at Gitmo in July would be the understatement of the century. (Yes we had equipment there, behind one boiler, that had to be raised or lowered every time the ship entered or left port.)
Baud
@Jeffro: Plus, it’s really out of our hands. We can put pressure, but it’s ultimately the GOP’s call on whether they want to throw down the gauntlet.

Lamarr Alexander has been among the lowest of the Republican low for his whole political career. Now that he doesn’t need to worry about re-election, he will still make the worst possible political calculation and choice regardless of his total freedom to choose.
What a piece of crooked political crap!
WaterGirl

Maybe. But my theory is that the first step is getting past Election Day and then figuring it out from there. And the “we’ll just expand the Court” option is still on the table if the Dems get control of the Senate and Biden wins.

Politico reported on ABC Battleground Polls of Texas and Florida and Texas, conducted Sept. 15-18. Biden was up two points in Florida, trump was up 2 points in Texas. In the Texas Senate race, John Cornyn led M.J. Hegar by 5 points, 46%-41%. I’m not advocating about donations; money flowing into other Texas state and federal races helps Hegar anyway. But don’t count Hegar out. I think that in her own way, Hegar is as good a candidate as Beto O’Rourke, maybe better. Hegar and Cornyn will debate Friday October 9.

Don’t know if someone has already posted but CNN are reporting that Chuck Schumer will be having a press conference imminently and that he will be accompanied by AOC.
Having a Congresswoman, and this one in particular, standing with him seems… interesting in the circumstances. Signs that the Dems have settled on a strategy and it involves playing hardball?
Jeffro
@randy khan: same here. I get wound up about quite a bit politically speaking, but RBG’s passing and McConnell/trumpov’s insistence on nominating her successor and ramming that through (whether before the election or during the lame-duck session) has me not worried at all. We have SO many options here, and the whole thing is helping clarify SO many folks’ understanding of what the modern GOP is all about.
Seriously!
Now let’s go win that Senate! ;)

@WaterGirl:
My school was small enough that lots of required classes were offered once a year, and you signed up for whatever was offered, or you could slip a year until your graduation.
Some semesters I would have an evening class with an 8 am or 9 am class the next morning… and I was a 90 minute drive from the campus.
So I spent nights on friends couches, floors…
Every night I spent at a friend’s was 3 hours of extra study time not otherwise available. Plus studying with other serious students was a big help. I gained better study habits just by being with people who took school seriously. Dean’s list many semesters! Graduated on schedule!! Hurray!! Pics with friends at graduation!!!
I agree that early morning classes sucked. One day I drove slowly through an ice storm to campus, black ice, amazing risk factor. When I got to campus and parked, could barely walk to class, when I got there, building WAS LOCKED — CLASSES were cancelled!!
I Was Pissed! Conditions were dreadful the whole trip, but I made it, due to experience driving in snow in the WV mountains as a younger person. If I had known they would cancel classes… oh well, I didn’t, so there it was.
So then went to friend’s place to sleep more…

Schumer’s started talking. He’s paid respects to RBG, reminded people of her last wish. Now he’s talking about the case to repeal the ACA and other cases due to to go before SCOTUS in next few months. Urges people to contact their Senator and pressure them to hold vacancy open.
AOC now talking. Basically repeating Schumer’s points but also saying that the Democrats will keep all options open. Turtle is playing with fire if he goes ahead.
Sloane Ranger
“Everything is on the table” Schumer says in response to question on expanding Court. Repeats when asked about ending filibuster. Reminds that protecting reproductive freedom, gay rights etc. is dependent on Dems winning the Senate.
Says Barrett stands for everything RBG was against.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: my college had a modern foreign language requirement for everyone. Not a set number of classes but you had to pass both written and oral exams. Until you did you had classes 6 days a week. 5 with a TA at a regular time and the 6th for grammar on Saturday at 8 am, a great incentive to pass those exams.
