I’ve officially reached the age where the difference in 75 degrees and 60 degrees is “Wow this is so nice sitting on my porch in shorts” to “Where the fuck are my wool socks and space heaters?”
To answer Watergirl’s question:
Blazing Saddles
Breaking Away
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Uncle Buck
Spaceballs
Also, I can’t believe we have raised a million dollars. Were this a right wing operation, I’d half kept half of that and bought a boat and spent the other half at an ad agency owned by DougJ.
Mallard Filmore
68F and above, I can stay warm.
67F can go either way.
66F and below, I have to turn on the heater.
VeniceRiley
I’m going to need HRT before I chime in. My lady just went on it and it made a huge difference. Yay estro-patch. She’s an estronaut.
I think we need to have a million party. Maybe some candidates will stop by and thank us? Do an AMA? hahahaha
Baud
So you’re saying you have regrets?
John Cole
@Baud: I don’t want a boat, so no.
WaterGirl
Just a moment ago I suddenly had to make a choice – come in from the porch or go get the heater and turn it on, so I have no idea what you are talking about.

I haven’t donated to Jaime Harrison yet, but it’s wonderful to see weak willed Lindsey start to realize that his actions, choices, and words will matter when his constituents vote this year.
Splitting Image
If this were a right wing operation, that would have been the best way to ensure that the suckers gave you another million.
Jeffro
Cole, I have a pretty beat up old kayak you can have if you promise not to swamp a bunch of other boats in the inevitable Biden Boat Victory Parade.
FlyingToaster
@Jeffro: Biden Boats are Backyard Boats.
(Yes, I live in New England. How’d ya guess?)

I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark again just yesterday. Love that movie. I was 11 when it came out and will still stop on it whenever I’m flipping around and find it.
evap
Breaking Away! What a great movie, and one that I had forgotten about. I must see if it’s available on any of the streaming services…
Jeffro
@FlyingToaster: totally! ;)

70 degrees is where I shift from shorts to long pants and a short-sleeved shirt. But no heat until it gets to the 30s. And I’m about 12 yrs older than thee.
I get the first three movies. Uncle Buck??? And you can do better than Spaceballs – The Producers is much better.
Omnes Omnibus
@swiftfox: I think you are missing the premise.

@John Cole:
If you had a boat you’d fall off it, land on a passing otter, feel guilty, then adopt the orphaned cubs and bitch about how the cutest one hates you and eats all your warmest socks.
Not grifting makes your life comfortably simpler.

And that million doesn’t count all the money we’ve raised for animal rescue and David Anderson’s niece and a few hundred other good causes. We may actually be nice people after all.
If you love Raiders, then you should watch “Raiders!” A shot for shot remake by kids, except for one key scene…. Best quote:”I don’t know why Steven Spielberg needed $20 million dollars to make this movie. My dad did it with his allowance.”
WaterGirl
@Tony Jay: That was very well done!
JaneE
Just wait a while and your tolerance for temperature will keep narrowing. On the bright side, you will no longer need summer or winter clothes, depending on where you live. My problem is that my shoulders and upper arms want the temperature about 15-20 degrees warmer than the rest of my body. Shrugs, shorts and sandals is fine around the house, but people look at me funny when I go out like that in December and January.

We turned on the heat today for the first time this season. Warmth is nice!
Well said.
It will be a good day when Puerto Rico is finally a state of the USA.
Cheers,
Scott.

Yeah, I’m thinking about firing up the woodstove. In the old days, that would never happen above 50f.

Well I struck out on finding a vigil to attend, but I did do my own bit to honor RBG, a small group gathered to ring bells in her memory. To an outsider, there was an octave of bells, sounding steadily for about 40 minutes. Here is a bit from near the end. https://youtu.be/_35lMT8RzYM
In Foxboro MA, 20-Sept-2020 A quarter peal of 1264 Bob Major, on handbells.
Trebles – C. Perry
3-4 – E. Hansen (conductor)
5-6 – J. Del Papa
Tenors- L. Dickerson
In honor of the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg-may her memory be for a blessing.
The English have a particular system for ringing churchbells, with all the bells ringing sounded in one order, then again in a different order, repeating for a specific number of rows, none repeating. Its part music, part mathematical group theory worked out in real time. For fans of classic whodunits, try Dorothy Sayers, The Nine Taylors, it will provide an introduction. Anyhow extended performances are often used to commemorate events, births, deaths, weddings, coronations, etc.
There are other performances that have or will be happening. They should get tabulated here https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/event.php?id=13133

@Another Scott:
Yes! It is a travesty that this country has “territories.” I’m all for giving all our territories statehood.
Tony Jay
@WaterGirl:
And who doesn’t like baby otters?
(Cut to 3000 word rant on “You people have no fucking idea how annoying baby otters can be but I’m still treating them like houseguests because I’m a soft touch and screw you all for asking anyways”)
It’s one of the reasons this Top 10,000 blog is always worth making a home in. There’s a lot of very different types of funny old life here.
And it takes my mind off modern Britain. That shit is just depressing.
WaterGirl
@Another Scott: That would be a good day.
Perhaps we could finally change our nation anthem to something else – something from West Side Story!
Totally silly response, but I agree. It’s a travesty that they were thrown paper towels after the hurricane, and I don’t imagine for a minute – that if Trump comes through with actual money to help Puerto Rice – that there’s even one single person who won’t see it as a craven attempt to buy their votes, for a fleeting moment, before he shits on them again.
WaterGirl
@Tony Jay: You could be a Cole impersonator!
You’ve got the commenting down pat. Are you a quick study? You would need to learn to be very distracted when you’re on the phone.

@rjnerd: Change ringing is such a wonderful tradition, as you note. One of my Sunday rituals is to track down “Bells on Sunday” on BBC Radio 4. There’s a snippet at 7:45p Eastern just before the final Shipping Forecast, a staple of the BBC broadcasting world. You listen to various conditions around the English Channel and elsewhere, culminating in a rousing “God Save the Queen” at 01.00 (8:00p Eastern).
Ken
@rjnerd: I must admit that I enjoy the mathematics of change-ringing more than the result. However though I play handbells I am not a change ringer so do not properly appreciate the technique, other than recognizing a steady rhythm.

I kind of enjoy Ed Miliband’s recent question time. I mean, it won’t accomplish anything, but at least the UK still has a system where it’s allowed and even encouraged.

As to the top of the post, arrived home about a half-hour ago. The thermometer read 43 God-fearing American degrees. That’s chillier than I’d like for Sep 20.

$1 Million. Many of us international readers would love to contribute to helping Americans get Hair Furor and his gang of incompetent lickspittles out of office, but we respect election finance laws (at home and in the US)

Pelosi was supposedly threatening to impeach trump again. how would this prevent a vote on seating a SCOTUS judge?

Shorts down to about 60 here and tee shirt to about 65, below that a sweat shirt.
Above 80-82 its AC all the way. And yes I’m weird. Lived in snow country for a decade and couldn’t believe people had to wear what looked close to their weight in clothing to go outside.
rjnerd
I am surprised that more than one person knew what I was talking about. The best analogy I have for explaining the exercise to Americans, is imagine someone explaining poker to someone from another planet. “We have 52 pieces of paper, and on one side they are all the same, on the other they are all different…..”
Right now, except for rare events like this evenings performance, we have to stay in practice with online simulation systems, and put up with the lag. We don’t even get to use an actual bell, instead, we have to hit keys like a video game controller. (I am working on the last part, if I can get the dueling libraries to actually compile, I will have a motion sensing “Handbell Input Device” )
As anyone that has experienced an office group meeting attempting to sing Happy Birthday to someone over Zoom can attest, lag makes a real hash of things. Those that have seen performances by real musicians, that show as a bunch of tiled faces, They aren’t just sitting in front of the laptop and playing.
The way it works is like a multi-track studio recording. For those, the drum track goes down, each performer then plays in synch with the track, unable to hear any other player. Their streams are collected, they get slid around with delays until all the time codes match, and that result is what you see. (With classic studio taping some play together, others like the person adding the brass accent line may lay down their track a week later)
rjnerd
@2liberal: They have to deal with the impeachment ahead of any other business.

FWIW I’m older than you and don’t have the climate issues you do. turn 60 in March.
5 movies:
Blade Runner
Silent Running

Milagro Beanfield War
Captain Marvel

Just think of all the used Subarus you could have fussed over.
WaterGirl
@2liberal: Apparently an impeachment hearing/vote in the Senate takes precedence over ALL SENATE BUSINESS.
So if they try to shove something through in the lame duck session, it would grind that to a halt.
That’s the idea as i understand it, anyway.

Strictly comedies:
Animal House
Miss Congeniality
Caddyshack
Blazing Saddles
Writing 50 Vote Forward letters to shaky Dem voters.

@WaterGirl: With multiple, successive counts of impeachment to replace each one the Turtle tries to call.
With anyone else, it’d be kind of a stunt, but there are ample legitimate opportunities with the shitgibbon…

Based on what one finds around here, the answer is no.

@evap: Decades ago, my wife and I went to Cinestudio (at Trinity College in Hartford) to see a movie whose title I can’t remember. Cinestudio couldn’t show that movie because its run in first-run theaters had been extended. In its place, they were showing “Breaking Away”, which we had never heard of. Went in anyway, and it’s one of my favorites.

Love Blazing Saddles & Raiders. Meh on Spaceballs and haven’t seen the others :(
Just wanted to weigh in with a link to a thing coming up on Monday that hasn’t gotten the publicity it deserves: Disability town hall with the Biden campaign!
