Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Tick tock motherfuckers! Tick fucking tock!

The revolution will be supervised.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

We still have time to mess this up!

We are aware of all internet traditions.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Usually wrong but never in doubt

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Shocking, but not surprising

This is a big f—–g deal.

Reality always wins in the end.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Not all heroes wear capes.

There’s some extremely good trouble headed their way.

Wetsuit optional.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Deploy the moving finger of emphasisity!

They are all Michael Cohen now.

Saul Alinsky is my co-pilot.

Too inconsequential to be sued

I’m going back to the respite thread.

Consistently wrong since 2002

I’d suggest raising money for Tina Smith for Senate in Minnesota.

That race has tightened and in some models is now leaning Republican….it would be a big blow to lose that seat.

Thank you for getting involved in voter registration and GOTV, and for the reminder that this is something that’s feasible to do!

A couple of standbys are the State Democratic Party (if you’re a Democrat) and the State or local League of Women Voters (a non-partisan group).

In our state, both of those organizations have pivoted to online work.

These days, both orgs. are online, so it’s easy to Google them and get in touch.

    September 3, 2020 at 2:38 pm

    @DougJ:   From DKos elections today:

MN-Sen: Republican Jason Lewis has released a survey from Harper Polling to argue that he has an opening in a Senate contest that has attracted little attention so far. The poll finds Democratic Sen. Tina Smith ahead 43-41, while Joe Biden leads 48-45; the memo says that this is a shift from the right from an unreleased May survey that had Smith and Biden up 46-35 and 50-42, respectively.

The only other firm we’ve seen from a reliable firm was a late July poll from Public Policy Polling for the senator’s allies at the gun violence prevention group Giffords, and it had Smith and Biden ahead 48-39 and 52-42.

While there’s been plenty of talk, especially over the last week, about how competitive Minnesota is may be in the presidential contest, there’s no indication yet that either party sees the Senate race as competitive. No major outside groups have run or reserved ads yet, and Smith held a huge $5.8 million to $995,000cash-on-hand lead in late July.

Bolded is my emphasis.  I don’t think we need to do MN Sen ahead of say MT or AK AL congressional races.  Tina Smith has plenty of cash, especially compared to her opponent.

    Link for Alyse Galvin AK-AL

    Link for Kathleen Williams MT-AL

    Anyways, my 2 cents.

I think we would be doing a real disservice if we did not include Paula Jean in WV on this list and at least get $2k her way. She has just a good a chance as McGrath of flipping a deep red state, and she is a HELL of a better candidate.  Also, John’s from WV so can’t believe he gives no love to her!

Take a look at her really powerful statements at about ending mountaintop removal, fighting the opined crisis, she isn’t afraid to call for medicare for all which the state frankly needs considering how often the miners and low income workers are completely abandoned by the state and the employers there.

She’s a Bernie fan, but that shouldn’t make this blog ignore her. Thanks in advance!

@Paul W.: West By God Virginia is a lost cause. Maybe Cole can opine otherwise, but there’s no way that state is electing a Democrat statewide besides Manchin at this point, IMO, and even I would venture to guess that he will lose in 2024 if he runs for reelection.

Thanks for doing this, Doug!  I tend to start with the thought that I’m going to give $X this cycle, and then I think about how I’m gonna divvy that up among the candidates.  (And then usually wind up giving more later on anyway, but still like to start with that thought.)  So this is one-stop shopping for me, and Labor Day weekend will be a good time to make decisions and give.

Great work, DougJ! OK, I’m going to make a pitch for a fundraiser for CD3 in Colorado, the one where Diane Mitsch Bush is running against Q-Anon cultist and serial lawbreaker Loren Boebert, even if I am miffed that Mitsch Bush’s campaign keeps refusing to get back to my paper about doing an interview.

@PsiFighter37: I mean, that seems pretty dumb to say considering Manchin already exists and that we are giving money to Doug Jones (who I love) and McGrath whose chances are just as low if not lower.

Hoping @DougJ hears my cry and at least gives a response! Otherwise I’ll keep reminding later, she had a really solid turnout and WV has had Dem Senators why more often than R’s.

    September 3, 2020 at 6:08 pm

We have contributed to Paula for Senate here in WV, running against one of the more vile and corrupt Republican Senators, Shelly Moore Capito, who learned how to be a corrupt pol from her dad, famously convicted former Gov Arch A Moore, Jr. Arch took his whole fam dammily (including all the in-laws) to Europe and except for using a card to buy the airline tix, the whole trip, everything, was paid for with a suitcase of cash Arch took with.

And knowing the Moore family, they didn’t attempt to do anything on the cheap. Only the best for Arch.

Shelly voted against bank regulation, and a week later her husband magically became a VP at Wells Fargo, the most “honest” bank around, hahaha. Just one example.

I read the Texas post (I lived there from ’80-’95, in Houston, Ft Worth and finally Austin). It may be heading towards a ‘next Colorado’.

But I want to warn about a state that may be heading the other way. Minnesota is the only upper midwest state that has mostly held the line against Republicans. But there continue to be warning signs that we’re the next Wisconsin.

Which could be confusing, as WI elected Tony Evers, and has a GOP lege because of gerrymanders, not popular vote. But that’s exactly the warning! I feel like MN is ten years behind our neighbor to the east. They’re coming to terms with their footsie with the GOP, and may turn the corner.

It feels like MN is on the edge of having to go through the disease to realize how bad it sucks. Anyway, a thermometer for Quinn Nystrom (MN-8) or Dan Feehan would be great!

@hitless: I’m definitely worried about Tina Smith. I think she’s a fine person and an accomplished technocrat.
But her campaign feels lackluster. And as Arizona has moved further and further from Republicans grasp this cycle, GOP money has moved here. Gah.
