(Write your own ‘tests came back negative’ joke)
… Keeping in place at least a piece of an in-person convention, in the original host city, has been a priority for the Republican National Committee, both symbolically and procedurally. The various R.N.C. committees must meet to complete the formal paperwork to nominate Mr. Trump by the coming deadlines. For example, Delaware, has a Tuesday deadline. And an in-person formal roll call on Monday, when 336 delegates representing 50 states, six territories and Washington, D.C., will formally renominate Mr. Trump from inside the convention center, was seen as a statement of where the party stands on lockdowns. The president and Vice President Mike Pence are expected to attend.
Even the scaled-back event has been tricky to pull off. The delegates participating were required to take at-home tests before arriving, and are being tested daily now that they are here (two people who planned to attend tested positive before traveling, and had to stay home). The R.N.C. has spent half a million dollars on tests and safety measures, according to officials, drafted a 42-page health plan, and still had to get an exemption from the state to host a large indoor gathering of out-of-towners. Convention participants on Saturday were all wearing privacy-hardened safety fobs, which are supposed to provide notifications if they come into close contact with someone infected with the coronavirus.
And they still have to abide by the rules of a city that is only in Phase 2 of reopening. Bars in Charlotte are still closed. Restaurants are allowed to open only at 50 percent capacity. Delegates are being told they can’t necessarily bring their spouses to planned dinners, and masks are required at all times, even outdoors.
But once they have entered the safe zone, delegates in town said they are here to experience a little slice of life as it used to be.
“I’ve been looking forward to this for months,” said Henry Barbour of Yazoo City, Miss., whose uncle is the former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour. “I want to be part of this. For those of us who are really engaged, this is a reward.”…
The Republican National Committee doesn’t expect people to sit in their hotel rooms ordering room service once they are here and has tried to make the trip worth it for its members. It has rented out four venues for attendees to choose from for each night they are here: the Billy Graham Library; a tour of a local brewery; a night at Middle C Jazz, a live jazz venue; and an evening at TopGolf, which has a high-tech driving range…
They’ll have time to spare, because there won’t be any wasted on hammering out a platform:

Trump has no second-term goals other than getting a second term, and Republicans have no interest in antagonizing him by saying he has goals he doesn’t.

The Republican Party is running on the screaming primal tantrum of whites and especially white men who are angry that they no longer have absolute power to decide what is and is not true, who suffers and who prospers, what is and is not acceptable, and most important what is ‘normal.’ They need no policies, only ‘fuck you’ to anyone who dares to tell them they are wrong about anything or cannot get their way. If everyone else hates Trump, then nothing is more important than forcing Trump on us against our will. ‘Against our will’ is the point and Trump is just the thing we don’t want.

For what it’s worth, I think the previous “we just say what we said in 2016” version of the platform has been replaced by the “Trump is our all-knowing God” version of the platform (or non-platform).
And if that’s correct, it means that for the first time since 1972, the platform will not include a demand to adopt a Constitutional amendment banning abortion. That’s a real testament to how hollowed-out the party has become under Trump (although I doubt it will affect how any of the anti-choice fanatics will vote).

The thing developed into a hotwife-cuckold bit once Jerry found out, and likely evolved on to swaps from there.

The USPS will deliver the ballots. They’re a tiny portion of the volume they deliver day in and day out and in terms of mail pieces they’re easy because they’re 1. identifiable as ballots on the outside of the envelope and 2. all going to the same place in any given area on the return trip.
This is such a bad political issue for conservatives I feel like it’s almost a wash- they will lose as many actual votes as they’ll potentially gain from trying to depress our count.
If I were trying it I wouldn’t focus on the ballots. Just tell people over and over that Trump is delaying their mail- it’s true. Donald Trump is the reason your mail is delayed. They already know the mail is delayed- tell them why. That takes care of the ballot problem and dings them on the delaying the mail charge, which is probably more relevant and important to more people than concerns about ballots are.

I know Democrats love the election argument, democracy, all that, and that’s certainly high minded but mail delivery is a service and it is one people expect and rely upon.
Tell them why the service sucks with the Trump people running it. Gary Peters, the senator from Michigan, has a lovely little chart that shows mail delivery slowing dramatically when the low quality Trump hire took over. Voting is a service too- it’s a state recording process. Conservatives run shitty, low quality voting services and they work as hard as they can to make voting horrible and inconvenient FOR VOTERS. What’s easiest for voters? Our approach to voting- not theirs.
The expansions on voting aren’t popular because people are committed to democracy. They’re popular because they’re more convenient and voter-centered than voter suppression is. Voter suppression is for politicians. Voter access is for voters.

I mean, you could argue both, but DO argue both.
Argue that black people waiting on lines for hours and hours in conservative states is lousy citizen service, in addition to being anti-democratic and racist :)
We can be outraged that they’re denying the franchise, but let’s also be outraged that the people waiting to vote are paying these jerks to administer elections and they’re not getting the job done. The job is to get people voted and get them on their way.
Same with mail. The mail worked and then it didn’t work. They broke it. If they did that to delay ballots it’s egregious but fucking up the mail is bad all by itself.
PPCLI
@Gin & Tonic: Ah. So that’s what Fallwell was trying to get out in front of.
Presumably after the interview was in the can, Reuters called Falwell to see if he had any reaction or response.
Kay
@PPCLI:
Republicans in Ohio tried to get rid of early voting for partisan purposes but they found out quickly that they can’t get rid of it- not because people are so concerned about Democratic vote totals but because early vote is convenient and easy. It’s a better process. It’s centered on what voters need, not what politicians need. That’s why it’s expanded so rapidly even in the face of ferocious conservative opposition. People like it!
Ken
@Gin & Tonic: Cuing the evangelical roll-out of Matthew 7:1-5 (“judge not lest ye be judged”) in five, four, three…

EDIT: Mfume looks like he’s getting up there. But now he’s laying into DeJoy especially with veterans.

@Yutsano: from your typing fingers to Future federal prosecutors.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: D. Dale said he also told a fake “Sir” story about how most President’s are left with no judicial vacancies to fill.

@Another Scott: Check out the longer list of defendants (or would it be respondents, IANAL) in that motion.
People [of the State of New York] v. The Trump Organization, Inc., DJT Holdings LLC, DJT Holdings Managing Member LLC, Seven Springs, LLC, Eric Trump, Charles Martabano, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, and Sheri Dillon

Say what you want about Wasserman-Schultz, but she is ripping DeJoy a new one.
Ken
@Another Scott: I think this is from the same document:
It continues by saying the defendants have failed to respond to document requests, and asks the court to compel them.
Yutsano
I have no idea which Republican is babbling but again DeJoy isn’t on the same page.
Sarbanes time!

because these people know that Trump’s next pick will be worse.
There were also no calls for trump to resign over impeachment.
Clinton? a ton.

Here’s what happened with drop boxes in Missouri – they’re all in storage because our stupid legislature actually wrote a law saying you can put absentee but not mail-in ballots in them! They authorized no excuse mail-in ballots for everyone because of COVID (we’re still an absentee excuse-only state) but then said they’re different from absentee ballots. https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/85-ballot-drop-boxes-in-missouri-are-in-storage-due-to-confusion-over-mail-in/article_6aad4622-89f7-577f-81cf-8d5ed91cd5e6.html
Oh, bullshit, this is exactly about making it difficult for voters (in the cities where the black and brown people live) to vote. I think they felt pressured to do this, so they decided to put a poison pill provision in it to allay fears of outstate Republicans that too many of the Democrats in the cities would be able to vote easily. They don’t want easy mail-in voting because it avoids all of their voter suppression efforts.
Kay
@Soprano2:
That’s not always going to be so, though. If they locate drop boxes only at county bds of elections in urban areas in Ohio, they will be inconveniencing suburban voters. In my county they’re inconveniencing rural voters- the main bd of elections for me is right across the street from my office and I live in the city.
This game they’re playing is really complex. It has to be a truly massive conspiracy with thousands of people working in tandem for it to definitely go in their favor. They’re horribly incompetent running the systems that exist. They’ll probably fail at inventing a new system to suppress.
Our voters need to 1. check their registrations 2. vote 3. return the ballot using the most secure process available to them. If we do all that we’ll be fine.
Kay
@Immanentize:
I’m fine with either “corrupt and incompetent” or “corrupt and malicious” but it was one of those two because this issue didn’t arise in Congress. It arose because people weren’t getting their mail. It came UP to Congress from complaints.
He has to explain why they aren’t getting their mail. They were, and then sometime in May or June they were not. We had live chicks delivered for decades and decades and decades and then we had dead chicks delivered. As a “logistics” person this is the whole deal. They have to be alive.
He’s delivering mail, not trucks. If the truck leaves on time but it doesn’t have the mail on it, it’s not a success. Must be mail + truck :)
Yutsano
@Kay: He keeps going back to he’s only been around for 70 days and he’s really only made one change (except now he’s saying changes) but he says he’s responsible in general but nothing specific! He’s terrible at this.
Now some Republican is just ranting and hasn’t even asked a question yet.

@Baud:
DougJ’s New York Times Pitchbot account is indeed a “worthy follow.”

@TS (the original): Biden has the youth vote, but how big is the youth vote?
