Could someone explain what’s going on in the Georgia jungle primary for the Georgia Senate seat currently held by Kelly Loeffler? Who should we raise for or just wait til the jungle primary is over? This is probably the more winnable of the two Georgia Senate races since Loeffler is a crooks and the other Republican running is an idiot and whack job.

I don’t think any given Republican being a crook, or being an idiot and whack job is mutually exclusive.
In fact, I think these are synonyms.

I did not know that the governor could ALSO run for senator in Georgia.

@raven: A potential run off two days later? Yeah, that’s going to be a textbook example of ‘low turnout’.

There will be at least 5 candidates (that I am aware of) on the Nov. 3 ballot for this Senate seat. 3 Democrats & 2 Republicans. If any of them gets to 50% +1 vote on Nov. 3 they are the winner & Senator. If no one gets there, the top two vote winners will go to a runoff election. Currently, polling shows the two R candidates running in the 1st & 2nd places. If that is the way the final vote on Nov. 3 looks, Ds will be locked out of the runoff and the seat.
I am not a GA resident but from the outside it looks like the DSCC did a crappy job of recruiting. Warnock, their candidate & the current minister at MLK’s old church, is running at least 3rd and in some polling in 4th and has had a very uninspired campaign. One recent poll showed him losing the AA vote to Joe Lieberman’s son. How the fuck is that possible? I don’t know.
Anyways, the only saving grace is that a lot of D voters are undecided (like a third) and maybe they will find their candidate and push them over the line in 2nd place. In the meantime, I wouldn’t give any of the Ds in this race money when that money would be better spent just about anywhere else there is a slightly competitive Senate race (the other GA race, MT, KS, IA, AK, NC, SC, AZ, ME, CO, TX). And don’t forget Doug Jones in AL.
Just my two cents but there you have it.

@Gravenstone: 2 months and 2 days later.
And the strategy might be to wait and hope Loeffler and the Democrat square off, only for Loeffler to be indicted. I can’t see the Democrat getting above 50% due to any additional support, as well. A Georgia sweep would be in the books regardless.

Raise for the runoff. I think it’s unlikely that any candidate for either seat will get to 50%, and democrats have struggled to get it together and GOTV for the runoff. They’ll need the money then. JMO.

Out here in the Pacific Northwest its NEVER fuck with a log truck. Some of those guys are insane, both the way they drive and they way they load logs.

I’d say donate to Warnock’s campaign if you want to contribute right now. I’m still hoping Democrats and non-partisans vote for him enough to get 50%+1 outright to avoid a run-off, but it will probably end with a run-off between Loeffler and Warnock imo.
Kent
I gotta say I haven’t really been paying attention to GA politics, but I hadn’t realized that Loeffler was an interim appointee who had never run for election herself. Basically worse than McSally who had at least run a legit campaign and lost a close race.

@raven: The way I read it, it means that the seat will be vacant from November 3rd until the election is certified, which could be in January. Is that correct?

So given how they lie all the time, we should assume Pence is dead or in serious condition until proven otherwise

@mrmoshpotato: it’s like you read my mind. Also, that Loeffler gal, sure has the sense of entitlement that comes from never having to make an effort for anything. Her racism adds a glossy finish to her crusty less than a caret heart.

My thought is that Dems in Georgia need to settle on one to avoid a runoff between Cruella de Plutocrat and Insane Yapping Attack Poodle. First, Mr. 5% needs to get the hell out. Second, any spawn of Joe has a lot of ‘splainin’ to do before he sees a dime of my money. So my recommendation would be to raise for Warnock. One heartening thing I learned from the NY primaries is that once it was publicized that problematic candidates had pluralities in some of the primaries, that news seemed to coalesce the electorate around someone else if that someone had the funds.

DeWine challenges Ohio ban on hydroxychloroquine treatment for COVID
Fuck DeWine. I guess “following the science and the experts” was all just for show or something. This is all to please Trump and people will be harmed and die because of it, both lupus patients who require hydroxychloroquine to live who likely won’t receive it and COVID patients from the drug’s harmful side effects

No chit. My WA backpacking days were in the years of The Big Cut and many trailheads were accessed via active logging roads. Those bastards came downhill FAST and took up every inch of available road, especially on curves.
Fun fact, federal timber sales include road-building paid for by the feds.

That could be really interesting. Let’s imagine, for a moment, that the Democrats win enough seats net to make the Senate 50-50, provided the Republicans take both Georgia races. We can hope for better, but that is surely a plausible result. If the Georgia elections go to run-off, or even if only one does, it means that when the Senate meets on January 3 the Democrats will have a majority. Pence will presumably still be the Veep, but there will be no tie to break. Instead of the Democrats taking over the Senate on January 21, when the Biden administration takes office, they will take over on January 3, the two days before the run-off, and thus several days before a winner can be certified. Even if the Republicans ultimately win the Georgia, that might be enough to prevent some lame-duck skulduggery. For example, although I hate to suggest it, it is possible that a Supreme Court position could open up. If the Democrats were able to adjourn for a month, or change the rules in some way, they might prevent the confirmation of a midnight justice. This scenario is not researched or carefully thought through — I can’t be expected to do everything — but there might be an opportunity to profit from Georgia’s foolish system.

This relates to one of my pet issues: we should consolidate all federal land holdings in the Department of the Interior. Right now, the Forest Service is part of Agriculture, which explains how and why they treat the forests the way they do. They should be put under the same umbrella as the Park Service and BLM so we can manage all our federal lands as a single unified whole.

@Baud:
Ha, I read that first sentence as trump plans to address United Nations Assembly in “prison”. If only.

@PST: After reading it again, I now assume that it is just sloppy Wikipedia writing, and that Loeffler will stay in place until the election results are certified, but I’m not an expert on Georgia election law. In any case, it makes it more important that the Democrat wins this seat without it going to a run off, because it’s one more Democratic Senator to put the breaks on any lame duck shenanigans by the shitgibbon.
PST
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): I hate like hell to say it, but I agree with DeWine on this one. If state boards of pharmacy can tell physicians what they can and cannot prescribe, what is to prevent a corrupt and vicious red state board from exercising its power in bad faith to pursue nefarious goals, especially with respect to reproductive rights? For example, what if a board bans the prescription of levonorgestrel or other “morning after” pill to prevent pregnancy? There is no end to the mischief this power might produce in the wrong hands, and I assume that in many states this would be the case.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Gravenstone:
DeWine fooled us all back in March and April. He definitely put on a good show for us that he was all for the science and listening to experts. When I saw how his reopening panels included a lot of industry types, I knew he was full of shit. Then he didn’t have the spine/decency to better defend Acton.
I mean, he’s in his fucking seventies. Governor of Ohio is where he’s going to stay. Why not say, “fuck it, I’m probably not going to be reelected, but that’s okay because this was always the end of the line anyway. I’m going to do what’s best for the state, the morons in the legislature be damned.”?
But then again, this guy is a forced birth whack-job and thinks the only thing wrong with the Nuclear Bailout bill was how it was passed, so maybe I was expecting too much from him in the absence of national leadership
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)

@Calouste: I’m not sure either about what would happen, but the only precedent I can think of the Minnesota after the Franken-Coleman election, and that tends to support my theory. As I recall, the seat was treated as vacant from January 3 until Franken was finally certified in July. The ever fallible Wikipedia agrees. If this is accurate, then we could have a 98-member Senate for a while.
Kent
Especially if there are national standards. In the absence of national standards the state’s have to do something I suppose.
There was tremendous variation between states on opioid prescription guidelines which is one reason why the opioid abuse epidemic was so patchy. Very little of it in TX, for example, which has plenty of backwoods white bubba types just like West Virginia. But seems to have mostly escaped the opioid epidemic, at least compared to Appalachia.
