RNC members were just notified that the executive committee voted to earlier this evening to adopt the 2016 rules and platform for the 2020 convention that is in progress on a location, per person who saw the notification.

Since they haven’t been successful at achieving those platform goals in the first 4 years of the Trump administration

Essentially, it sounds like they're just going to skip right to the part where Trump accepts the nomination uncontested.

So, they’ve scrapped what can be scrapped — fortunately, so little has changed in the national political climate since 2016 — and are officially decamping for a new location well into Trump (and coronavirus) country. Wonder how the delegates will feel about getting abandoned in Charlotte to do the gruntwork, while the Big Swinging Dongles party in Jacksonville?
Republicans expect to move their national convention from Charlotte, N.C., to Jacksonville, Fla., a shift planned after President Trump told officials in North Carolina that he did not want to use social distancing measures aimed at halting the spread of the coronavirus, according to three senior Republicans.
The decision could change, the Republicans cautioned, but as of now, officials are on track to announce the new location as early as Thursday…
Jacksonville is the most populous city in Florida, where Ron DeSantis, a Republican and an ally of Mr. Trump, is the governor. Jacksonville’s mayor, Lenny Curry, is a longtime Republican official.
Once they decided to uproot the convention, Mr. Trump’s aides and Republican officials had wanted to relocate to a state, and a city, controlled by Republicans. Jacksonville also may have enough hotel rooms to accommodate the gathering, people familiar with the discussions said, and it is a comparatively easy drive from Charlotte.
New reported cases of the coronavirus are on the rise in both North Carolina and Florida…
Guess the delegates get to use their non-refundable air tickets and hotel rooms in Charlotte, and are free to make their own way to Florida, if they can find a room and don’t mind playing Covid-19 roulette. Lucky duckies!
… The Republican National Committee notified members that its executive committee had voted unanimously to adopt the 2016 rules and platform for 2020, a reflection of concerns about whatever business is conducted in Charlotte being done by a small number of people.
The president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, had been working to make changes to the platform to remove some of the language about gay rights, such as opposition to same-sex marriage, which will now remain in the platform. The platform in 2016 also weakened the party’s position on support for Ukraine against Russian aggression…
Will there be protests, regardless? Is the Pope a Catholic? Is Donald Trump a racist?
… Jacksonville is among the dozens of cities and towns where protesters have called for changes in the treatment of black people by law enforcement. On Tuesday, Mr. Curry walked with protesters who were demonstrating outside City Hall. Early Tuesday morning, city officials took down a confederate statue there.
Party conventions are often the focus of protests, and an event in Jacksonville is unlikely to be an exception.
“It’s a little too early right now to plan, but I can guarantee you’re going to see some protesting,” said Isaiah Rumlin, the president of the Jacksonville branch of the N.A.A.C.P…
No surprise, per the local news, Jackonsville leaders are just thrilled to bits!
… Duval GOP Chairman Dean Black said if the RNC comes to Jacksonville, the pandemic will be taken into consideration, but he referred us to the RNC for details on the plans.
Black said this would be the biggest event for Jacksonville since the Superbowl in 2005.
“This is an opportunity for Jacksonville to shine,” Black said.
He admits they have their work cut out for them.
Typically, it takes at least two years to plan an event of this scale, but Black said they would have less than 2.5 months to prepare.
It’s not a done deal just yet. RNC Officials sent Action News Jax a statement that said “No final decision has been made there are several cities still being visited/considered. It very well could end up being Jacksonville but at this point they are still doing site visits.”
Think harder, Jacksonville inhabitants! Maybe you could fake a Zika recurrence? A yellow fever outbreak? Yersinia pestis?
