I don't believe that Forrest Fenn's treasure has really been found. And I'm certain that if it has been found, the finder has no idea what he or she is holding. I'll explain, but first here's the news today: https://t.co/MW1AnqcJ6f
— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020
But I didn't come to Fenn for the story everyone knows today, the tale of a twinkly-eyed gentleman who buried treasure so kids could fall in love with the outdoors. On the contrary. I learned about Fenn from the FBI. On a grave-robbing case.
— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020
But there had been questions for years about where Forrest had made his money. When I visited his compound in Santa Fe, I found a house that operates like a museum, but with no guards, better inventory, and a price list.
— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020
When I asked Fenn about the FBI case, he told me that he couldn't discuss it because his lawyer told him, "if you talk about it, you could lose it." (Then later he told me he misspoke.)
— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020
Fenn told me he filled the treasure box with ancient figurines, a Spanish ring, turquoise beads, American eagle gold coins, gold nuggets, a vial of gold dust, two gold discs, and "a lot of jewelry," including rubies, sapphires, and diamonds. But Fenn wasn't done.
— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020
Where would he get such an idea? Well, it turns out that Fenn's plans for death mirrored the way he lived. (And I promise this is all coming back around to why I don't believe the treasure has been found.)
— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020
You can read the rest here, but if you click on any tweet above, the comments are kinda interesting, too:

Been busy all day, but just heard about this.
Mutha….
Wait a minute…this orange mofo really planning to have his next KKKlan rally in Tulsa, OK (site of the 1921 massacre of black residents & businesses) on JUNE-FUQN-TEENTH!
You have got to be fuqn kidding me!
WaterGirl
@lamh36: That is no accident. You’ve got to hand it to Stephen Miller, not in a good way. He knows his history.
lamh36
@WaterGirl:

Ladyraxterinok
@lamh36:
Just saw this! Super sickening! No word where it will be held as yet. My friend and I can’t think where he might like it. She says all the streets in the city are torn up now.
He liked the TPD cop who told recruits in a Tulsa suburb in January 2020 that cops need to kill 20% more blacks, right?—-the man is disgusting!
Erin in Flagstaff
My friend had theories where the treasure was hidden and was all packed up and ready to spend the next two weeks looking for it…until the news broke about it being found. If someone actually found it, my friend missed his chance, though where he was looking for it may not be where it was hidden. I scoured through that poem trying to identify possible locations. It was a fun puzzle.

Since this is an open thread. I’ve been doing “classic movie nights” with my 14 year old daughter during quarantine. And yes, we are using the more expansive definition of “classic” that extends into the 1980s.
Last night we watched “Back to the Future” which she absolutely loved. That came out in 1985 when I was in college. I did the math. The 1955 “past” in “Back to the Future” was more recent in 1985 than the 1985 “present” is from today. The 1950s sock-hop era was 30 years in the past in 1985. Today 1985 is 35 years in the past.
My daughter commented as much on the 1985 fashions as 1955, asking “did all the girls have that same weird hair?” and being intrigued by the “mom jeans” that the girls were wearing in 1985.

She makes me sad these days. The art is not the artist, the art is not the artist…
Do I dare even look?

It’s always sad when you have to scratch a hero off your list.

I mean, how do you shit on pulled pork sandwiches? PBJs? Turkey and dressing?
He complains about turkey being bland, then eats a lobster roll???

His take on po’boys and tortas is acceptable, if utterly banal.
Ugh.
You got me, Loomis. You sly little fucker. You got me.

@Krope, the Formerly Dope:
Knock yourself out. You’ll be scratching your head the way I was. It’s like a cube design inside a Star of David, so anyone can tell he’s saying something about Judaism. Apparently it’s a reference to some really weird conspiracy theories about cubes representing Jewish control of the world.

@Martin: Can we trade with the Asians for the Wu Tang Clan?

@Jeffro: Yeah, definitely Running Man vibes there.
It really is kind of crazy to me that he wrote such decent sci-fi. Did not see that coming, at all.

@Krope, the Formerly Dope: The Scioto is closer. Or the Olentangy. Getting to the Ohio would be a hike.

Trump is incredibly consistent in his ability to sink to a new all-time low every single day.
He’s pure, unadulterated, irredeemable, and unrepentant scum.

I’m dying for Katy Tur’s husband to write a book about this and look forward to the Netflix documentary series (Venmo: dddamn).
Are there any New Mexico Balloon Juicers our there? We should have a meet up when this is all over….been following this story for years and here for it.

Didn’t see it, but saw some other weird shit. The only cube reference I saw was something about “Saturn cubes.” No Stars of David there.
Some weird vaxxer shit tho.

The Louisville Courier Journal has issued a strong endorsement for Charles Booker in the Kentucky Senate race:

Try telling that to the plausible deniability crowd. Will swear up and down they aren’t racist. Won’t understand anything about dog whistles. But Rs got them on lock.
Jeffro
@different-church-lady: I’m good with that. I just need someone to leave him the means to um, “redeem himself with honor” or whatever and then shut the bunker door.
I can’t believe these GOP goons think they’re going to somehow thread the needle here and come through ready to hold office/hold their heads up ever again.

It’s not that he’s dumber than a box of rocks? (sorry rocks, no insult intended)

@Omnes Omnibus: I’ve always liked this post from Teresa Nielsen Hayden at Making Light: La cuisine de Nouvelle Zion. Wonderful collection of Intermountain West Mormon Cooking recipes and the stories behind them. I especially like the one about bringing strawberry jello salad as the food of her native land to the potluck church dinner at her church in Brooklyn.
Just realized how old that is. Weird what pops into one’s head. But google found it.

An audio recording of “D.C. National Guard General Congratulates Troops on Protest Response ” is at the start of a NYT article about the National Guard being ordered to attack protesters in Lafayette Square.

Richmond judge orders 10-day injunction against removal of Confederate monument
So that is followed by your link
Police are on scene on Richmond’s Monument Avenue where a statue of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis has been pulled to the ground.
The Governor was going to get it removed & put in into storage but the fools had to go to the courts – surely they knew what would happen – but of course they did. Now they can do their GOP crying scene.
Martin
@dmsilev: We was never a general for the union – at least not during the war. He resigned from the US Army to go become a plantation slave owner and then returned as a Confederate general.
Whatever good deeds he did for the US were undone when he took up arms against the US. Surely we have better examples of US military officers from the last two world wars that we could name these bases after.
TS (the original)
@Aleta:
The GOP way – never the fault of the guy who gave the order. The underlings just did it wrong. Why on earth wouldn’t it be interpreted as high profile? Trump was screaming for the protest to be cleared so he could take a walk.
Aleta
@TS (the original): The buck stops as far down there as he can get away with.

@Kelly: In hindsight, how much better off would this country have been if we had executed Jeff Davis and his cabinet and most of the Confederate generals who betrayed their West Point oaths?
dmsilev
@Martin: He was an absolute shit general for the Confederacy, hence an effective boon for the Union.
Kelly
I’m rather cheered at the way statue destruction has branched out to Columbus, Leopold, that Bristol slave trader, etc. The front seem to be broadening while gaining force.
