Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

No one could have predicted…

I did not have this on my fuck 2020 bingo card.

We have all the best words.

Shelter in place is one thing. Shelter in pants is quite another.

I’m going back to the respite thread.

Wetsuit optional.

Yes we did.

How do you get liars to care about the truth?

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

This is how realignments happen…

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Screw the Judean People’s Front. Splitters.

Nevertheless, she persisted.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

Shock troops for the Unitarian Jihad.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Tick tock motherfuckers! Tick fucking tock!

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Princess PowerPoint Canceled in Kansas

Wait until she tries to go back to Manhattan. From The Wichita Eagle:

Wichita State University and WSU Tech canceled Ivanka Trump’s scheduled virtual commencement speech without explanation Thursday in a late-night news release following a public outcry from faculty, students and alumni.

The joint university statement, which posted online late Thursday night, said the school’s plans have “refocused more centrally on students” and that Trump will be replaced by nursing graduate Rebecca Zinabu.

This is especially schadenfreude-y because Ivanka was invited to give the commencement address by the president of that university, who was appointed by Ivanka’s horrid father to the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board. The board is co-chaired by Ivanka, despite Ivanka’s distinct lack of expertise on America or its workforce or policies or advisory roles or boards of any type, including regular old lumber.

Ivanka’s efforts on behalf of the board seem confined to robotically reciting speeches that sound as if they were written by a program that ingests the keynotes from every McKinsey & Co. conference and then vomits them out in random chunks.

She also meets with captains of industry who hope to ingratiate themselves with her awful father by enrolling existing training programs under the vaguely scammy advisory board banner for the purpose of allowing Trump Père to make preposterous claims like this:

“14 million people she’s gotten jobs for,” Trump said, referring to Ivanka. “Her goal when she started it two years ago was 500,000 jobs. She’s done over 14 million, so that’s really something.”

It IS really something, and that something is a lie: when Donald Trump said it, the number of jobs created by the entire U.S. economy during his administration was around 6 million. Ivanka told a more modest lie, claiming that the board had added 6.3 million jobs.

Credit for the DISinvitation goes to an associate professor at the university, Jennifer Ray, who wrote:

“Ivanka Trump, obviously, represents her father’s administration as one of his closest advisors. “To many Americans, that administration has come to signify the worst of our country, particularly in its recent actions toward those peacefully protesting against racist police brutality. This is not about politics and policy; some of the sharpest critiques of President Trump’s actions come from prominent members of his own party, from figures like former Defense Secretary James Mattis and President George W. Bush.”

Ivanka meeped about “cancel culture” and “viewpoint discrimination” and “academia” on Twitter, keeping alive her unbroken streak of declaiming pompously about nouns she’d clearly struggle to define. She also released the planned speech. An excerpt:

“You commence at a moment unlike any other. America and the world are battling a terrible pandemic. Our entire society is engaged in a national endeavor to defeat the virus, protect our fellow citizens, and open up America again to rebuild our economy and take care of the safety and well-being of our people.

“Right now I know the economic uncertainty is real, and it’s hard on many of you and your families. Your own blueprint for your future is likely changing due to the pandemic, but I am confident that even if your path is different form the one you imagined, ultimately it can be better than we could ever have planned.”

More vapid PowerPoint garbage. I’m sure the nurse will do much better speech on short notice and without servants and support staff. Congrats, WSU Tech Class of 2020!

    @Nicole:  They will.

Personally, I am looking forward to the part of the aftermath of the election when the rental wives of Don Jr. and Eric stop getting their checks from the GOP.  I’m sure those two fine ladies already have lawyers paid up and ready to go.

If we can somehow get Jared in jail that will be the cherry on the cake of their defeat.

I would normally just shrug and say “well, they’ll get taken care of by some right wing think tank somewhere” but Trump has done such a scorched-earth job on America already that I’m not sure any organization can gamble on “employing” them.

@MattF: One of the Dems first acts has to be that an NDA can be quashed by a judge if it is found to impede the interests of justice.

Or, better yet, that a person under an NDA can make a sealed deposition in a case, asking for the NDA to be broken.

Also, that NDAs covering witnesses to illegal behavior can be considered obstruction of justice.

Basically, a moratorium on NDAs, or at least ones without reasonable end dates, needs to happen.

I mean, that’s sort of the point of universities to begin with – to exist outside of the local culture – which is why they’re always derided as liberal, because exposure to other people and other cultures is definitely part of the goal.

We attended a rally/march this morning- the March for Stolen Lives and Looted Dreams, the flyer for this one said- at Frederick Douglass Circle, here in Harlem.  Several thousand people, by the time the march started (which we didn’t go on- though I know the risk of outdoor transmission is low, NYC has been through so much, and I’m really anxious about catching Covid-19 now, when we’re on the other side of the mountain, so we stayed near the back of the crowds, where there was more open space).

I remember the RNC here in 2004, and all of the protests and marches, and while I participated in a lot of them, I also remember feeling despair, because I knew no one was listening or paying attention- the GOP didn’t give a shit what anyone other than their donors thought about their policies.  This time, when we’re over a week into protests, and they are still going strong, and are all over the  world- I’m letting myself be a little hopeful that reforms will actually occur.  Cops can threaten and attack and bully, but ultimately, there’s a lot more of us than there are of them.

    […]

You could also point to the damage done to democracy wholesale when obscene amounts of money are siphoned outside the country and diverted from social programmes, and how it hollows out accountability and makes a mockery of any efforts to establish a fair contest.

Facebook’s head of augmented and virtual reality, Alan Bosworth, was quoted as saying that Cambridge Analytica was essentially selling “snake oil” and that they routinely overstated the ability of their psychometrics approach to influence political behaviour. Bosworth may be right about the firm’s ability to move individual political opinion, but the Kenya data underscores that he is missing the overall point.

The “XXXXXXX” psychometrics of Cambridge Analytica’s work does not operate independently of the firm’s other work, nor should the impact of Facebook’s role in this space be seen in isolation. We have entered the era of the corporate elections, where polls are not arguably the pinnacle of democratic participation but are instead another business subject to the vagaries of domestic and international interference, and purely for profit.

The future of elections is at stake, and this is just one part of the emerging picture.

It’s an opinion piece about Kenya and CA, but the same thing is happening here.

Zuckerberg knows very well what people are doing on his platform, and he’s being paid handsomely for it.
