I've seen enough. Rep. Steve King (R) has been defeated in #IA04.

— Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) June 3, 2020

This moves a stretch plausible Dem pickup off the table as generic Republican will steam roll above average Dem, but this is good news.

    Proper messaging from the DNC might help here: “We rejoice that the Republican party, for once, has rejected an outright white supremacist.  HowEVer…here are all of the things that King and Feenstra agree on” (laundry list of same policy positions scrolls through).  So maybe not all that different, just sneakier on Feenstra’s part.  Vote Dem this November!”

    Bonus messaging – snooze media, ask the question: “Senator Ernst, how do you feel about white supremacist Steve King losing his primary bid tonight?”

    @CaseyL: The Congressional delegation is trending Democratic. I think three of the four House seats are held by Democrats. King was the only Republican – largely because of the makeup of the district. While both senators are Republican, Senator Ernst who is up for reelection is not having as easy a campaign as she did when she was first elected six years ago.

    @RyanFaircloth

    Minneapolis Public Schools votes unanimously to terminate its contract with the Minneapolis Police Department, in response to the death of #GeorgeFloyd.

    The district has long faced criticism over the use of SROs, and sought to transform the role into a mentor. In 2018-2019, a Minneapolis schools survey gave mostly positive marks to SROs, but data also showed school cops had more interactions with black students than their peers.

    Minneapolis Public Schools has contracted with the Minneapolis Police Department since 1967 (except for 2004-2009, when the district worked with park police), a district spokeswoman tells me.

    “I value people and education and life,” school board chairwoman Kim Ellison said in an interview. “Now I’m convinced, based on the actions of the Minneapolis Police Department, that we don’t have the same values.”

    Also meant to note: Minneapolis Public Schools was paying the police department $1.1 million per year for services. Students and school board members say that money could be better spent on mental health services.

Given the weather, they’re probably wearing an alternate under armor polo that has some crest or insignia you can’t see because of the plate carriers. Those are the normal duty (tactical) pants they were. And my guess is they get a choice of footwear provided they are within the regs.

    @Marmot: The guy that won is a Republican state legislator from King’s district. He ran as more Trumpy than King. So unless the district makes a huge swing for some reason, having the state legislator on the ballot being opposed by the Democratic challenger rather than King makes it more likely that the Republicans will hold the seat.

    @Kent: From Wikipedia:

    Anti-Semitism controversy[edit]
    In September 2017, Plame tweeted a link to an article from The Unz Review website posted by Philip Giraldi, titled “America’s Jews Are Driving America’s Wars”, repeating the title of the article in her tweet.[75][76] The article said that certain “American Jews who lack any shred of integrity” should be given a special label when appearing on television: “kind-of-like a warning label on a bottle of rat poison.”[76] Amid criticism, Plame first defended her posts, replying on Twitter that “Many neocon hawks ARE Jewish.”[76][77] She also said that people should “read the entire article” without “biases”, writing in defense of herself after the initial backlash:[78] “read the entire article, just for a moment, to put aside your biases and think clearly.”[79] Within two hours she deleted her initial post and apologized, tweeting “OK folks, look, I messed up. I skimmed this piece, zeroed in on the neocon criticism, and shared it without seeing and considering the rest. I missed gross undercurrents to this article & didn’t do my homework on the platform this piece came from. Now that I see it, it’s obvious. Apologies all. There is so much there that’s problematic AF and I should have recognized it sooner. Thank you for pushing me to look again. I’m not perfect and make mistakes. This was a doozy. All I can do is admit them, try to be better, and read more thoroughly next time, Ugh.”[80] Ramesh Ponnuru and Caleb Ecarma have argued that the incident followed a pattern of her posting antisemitic content, and of Plame making jokes about “rich Jews”.[81][78] She had tweeted at least eight articles from the same website before,[82] in which she previously retweeted links to conspiracy theories of ‘dancing Israelis’ being behind the 9/11 attacks.[83]

    @Mary G: I know Phil. My take on his remarks is he inartfully tried to say that Americans, who are Jewish, like Bill Kristol, Paul Wolfowitz, the Ledeens, the Wurmsers, the Kagans, and several others who we’d call neo-Cons, and who have either done work for the Israelis or are extreme supporters of Israel had been actively pushing for the invasion of Iraq. And Giraldi is not wrong. The idea for the invasion – justification and assessment of how it would work out and what would happen as a result of it – originated in work that several of the individuals above were involved in, through Kristol’s Project for a New American Century which first promoted the idea in the US, were doing for Bibi Netanyahu and the Likud Party in the late 1990s. That has been extensively documented. I have a copy of the assessment they prepared for Bibi and the Likud in 1998.

  46. 46.

    Adam L Silverman

    June 3, 2020 at 12:15 am

    @Mary G: I just did and replied to it. Short answer: I know Phil and I agree with him and I’m Jewish and an American. Kristol, Wolfowitz, the Wurmsers, the Ledeens, the Kagans, etc, as well as their non-Jewish American fellow travelers such as Richard Perle, John Bolton, James Woolsey, and Robert Zoellick, should have been identified as having come up with the idea for invading Iraq, promoted in the US by Kristol’s Project for a New American Century, as a result of work they were paid to do to create the concept and justification for Bibi Netanyahu and the Likud Party in the late 1990s. Perle was one of the primary authors of that policy paper for Bibi. And it was then turned into the PNAC pitch to the Bush 43 Administration.

    Did anybody else, at the end of January and into February, think you were watching the beginning of the end of human civilization? I remember reading online and watching the PRC shutting down the entire country as well as the chaos inside Wuhan and all I could wonder was, what the hell was this thing for the CCP shut down it’s economy. The reports of people collapsing in the streets in China and Wuhan authorities supposedly welding doors to apartment complexes shut didn’t help. And then the coronavirus began to spread to South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Iran, then Italy. It was fucking scary at the time. Still is, but not civilization ending

    Protesters gathered Sunday evening in downtown Vancouver to speak up about racial injustice and the recent death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.

    Additionally, Canadians have been protesting the recent death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a black Toronto woman whose mother says the 29-year-old woman was fatally pushed off a balcony by authorities.

    An estimated 3,500 people took part in the protest, held outside the Vancouver Art Gallery.

    Vancouver’s gathering was peaceful, with many attendees wearing face masks and at times attempting some degree of physical distancing. Reports indicate some masks were being made available to attendees who did not have one.

    The Vancouver chapter of Black Lives Matter said they did not organize the event, but they “stand in solidarity, with deep gratitude.” They identified Jacob Callender-Prasad as the organizer, who called for the protest on social media, saying:

    “We need a call to arms it’s time we stand up and unite and support our brothers and sister in the states we can’t sit by and watch more of our people continue to die to cops who don’t deserve to hold the badge and serve and protect the law cannot should not and must not pick and choose who they want to serve and protect.”

    Fuck that shit. WE are civilization. What the rightwingers and Russians and dirty cops are doing is the attack on what real civilization is, and they are outnumbered and outpowered and are not going to win.

    Do not say ‘oh noes civilization is collapsing we lose’ at times like this. These are the times we make the most progress and nail down that progress so it’s not easily lost. It’s times of apparent softness where our civilization erodes, and that’s a challenge for a different generation if we do our part right.
