Well, I made my first ever sourdough bread today from Alain’s starter, by way of Auntie Beak (thanks, Auntie!). Wow, somebody’s got way too much time to kill. ;)
And please forgive me if this has already been discussed, (can’t find it in the previous thread), but I just heard a “breaking” news report that said the Minneapolis coroner has found that George Floyd had underlying medical conditions, and that asphyxiation was not a cause of death. WTF?
MINNESOTA, Minn. (WTVO) — The Hennepin County Medical Examiner says that George Floyd likely died of strangulation and traumatic asphyxia after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for more than 8 minutes.
The medical examiner said Floyd had underlying health conditions, including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease.
“The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death,” the medical examiner reported.

27.

@raven: Okay, thanks for that. Looks like the TV guy got it completely wrong, because I definitely heard him say that asphyxiation was not a contributing factor. Then again, this one particular station in L.A. is probably the closest thing we have to a Sinclair station, and fanning the flames like that doesn’t surprise me at all.

OmiGod, how many run-throughs did he have to do before it all went smoothly.
@raven: Clever! We have a fairly low ceiling in our basement with ~ 35 year old stapled-up square ceiling tiles right now. Except in places where I had to rip them out to replace sections of leaking copper pipe, etc. I’ve been thinking off-and-on about what to use to replace the ceiling when I rip most of the rest of it out (there are some sections with drywall). Given the various electrical boxes, valves, etc., and the possibility of more leaks, drywall seems like a bad idea…
MINNESOTA, Minn. (WTVO) — The Hennepin County Medical Examiner says that George Floyd likely died of strangulation and traumatic asphyxia after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for more than 8 minutes.
Now it reads:
MINNESOTA, Minn. (WTVO) — The Hennepin County Medical Examiner says a preliminary autopsy found no evidence that George Floyd died of strangulation and traumatic asphyxia after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for more than 8 minutes.
So how did it go from “likely died of strangulation and traumatic asphyxia”, to, “no evidence that George Floyd died of strangulation and traumatic asphyxia”? Something’s wrong here, (or I’m misreading something), but the headline clearly states: Medical examiner: No evidence George Floyd died of strangulation
I didn’t add quite enough flour, so the loaves kind of flabbed out after the shaping and second rise instead of staying tall
In my experience, loaves that flop sideways instead of springing up are often caused by letting the loaves rise too long rather than getting the proportions of the dough wrong. If the loaf starts to sag when you slice the top, you let it rise too long.

That sounds like somebody being very careful to list everything, as medical examiners are supposed to do. Given what actually happened, a healthier man might just have taken longer for the police to kill.

@JWR: You’re not misreading something. They did. CNN has been reporting on the report as “no evidence of traumatic asphyxiation” all day.
Now, that typically refers to the visual inspection where they look for bruising around the throat, evidence of a crushed windpipe, etc. Given how the death happened, I wouldn’t expect to find any of that.

Here’s a respite item. JK Rowling has a children’s book appearing online now. Maybe some of you can read it to the kids in your life (in home or far away, via Skype). Or enjoy it yourselves.
The “Harry Potter” author released the first two chapters of “The Ickabog” on a new website Tuesday, explaining that the story will be released for free over the next seven weeks. Posted every weekday, each installment will be “a chapter (or two or three).”
“I had the idea for ‘The Ickabog’ a long time ago and read it to my two younger children chapter by chapter each night while I was working on it,” Rowling wrote in a note introducing her latest work. “It isn’t Harry Potter and it doesn’t include magic. This is an entirely different story.”
In a note on her official website, Rowling explained that she had written most of the first draft of the story between “Harry Potter” books and originally planned to publish “The Ickabog” after the last book in the “Harry Potter” series was out. She shelved it in favor of taking a break from publishing and then pivoting to books for adult readers.
… “‘The Ickabog’ is a story about truth and the abuse of power,” Rowling wrote in the note on her website. “To forestall one obvious question: the idea came to me well over a decade ago, so it isn’t intended to be read as a response to anything that’s happening in the world right now. The themes are timeless and could apply to any era or any country.”
I don’t care for Rowling tbh. I think she’s a TERF because she’s liked transphobic tweets in the (recent) past. I’d read the HP series if I could find some copies in the local library. They’re almost always checked out, 20 years after the first book was published

@Cheryl Rofer: Probably one of many reasons Obama got rid of him.
so, I went to my favorite greenhouse garden center today because I wanted a few calibrochoa for hanging plants. They were out. So I bought $70 worth of other perennials instead. Which is why I’m not allowed to go to this garden center. But BOTH of my small Japanese maples seem to have died in the last hard freeze, so I needed cheering up.
@japa21: We were just reading the explanation for what things are changing. From what I can tell, a lot of things are now allowed but management doesn’t recommend them. I don’t think anything will change for us for at least a couple of weeks. I can let my hair grow out for a while. Mr DAW needs a haircut more than I do. He has little curls on the back of his neck
@Cheryl Rofer: My first thought when I saw that protests are happening across the US was good. We need to not rage at the injustice and then eventually move on to something else. Time’s up, boys in blue. I hope your thin blue line gets trampled.
But then the fear of what might happen to these brave people comes to mind and I worry about eruptions of violence from the police, not the protestors.
Die fighting or die with a knee on your neck. That’s some choice.
@Dorothy A. Winsor: Last Friday, I cut my bangs and cut a couple of inches off my hair. I washed my hair, combed it and then freeform snipped a couple of inches off of each clump, and called it a day.
Close enough for government work. I think our Gov opened up hair salons today, but I won’t do that for a least a month, so that will be at least my 3rd appointment that’s been cancelled.
Not worth the risk at this point. Getting my hair cut can surely wait until we see how the opening pan out. I’ve never been a “bleeding” edge person when it comes to hardware and software, and there’s no reason to start now with a pandemic
But I am buying a $250 gift certificate to my hair salon as soon as I get paid on Monday – to put some money in their pocket, and I can use it for my appointments when it seems safe.

Well, I made my first ever sourdough bread today from Alain’s starter, by way of Auntie Beak (thanks, Auntie!). I didn’t add quite enough flour, so the loaves kind of flabbed out after the shaping and second rise instead of staying tall, but the bread is still tasty with a good crust and airy crumb. I would like to say that I was calmed by channeling Alain’s gentle presence while working with the dough, since I’ve been looking forward to finally arriving at the day of baking—but national events have sucked so hard that even this thing I’ve been looking forward to trying for weeks has been, well, sour.
What has surprised me most as a sourdough newbie is that pancakes can be made directly from the jar of starter by adding eggs, oil and sugar to it. I used an online recipe that didn’t really go into detail about the food chemistry involved in adding the final ingredient, baking soda, to the rest. My batter nearly overtopped its very large pyrex container once the baking soda went in and the whole thing started bubbling. Like a science fair project, but much more delicious. Pancakes were very light, almost crepe-like, and fold well to enclose fruit, yogurt, etc.

Is it the mint leaf you object to? Or possibly the ice? Because other than that, it’s just bourbon.

When one has a Costco sized bag of fresh limes and a plethora of mint sprigs, the only thing to do is to make mojitos. As I’ve done almost every night this week. After today, I feel like I need an XXL sized cup.

If you’re in the mood for that sort of thing, Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt are doing a joint live-stream at 9 p.m. Eastern. Available on both artists’ websites.

@mali muso
Property next door has a lime tree and the neighbor has told me I can help myself to as many as I may want any time.

@prostratedragon:
The purpose of the report’s focus on underlying conditions is to allow (or even encourage) a jury to determine that there is reasonable doubt as to whether the officer’s actions caused the victim’s death.
The fix is most assuredly in.

So I just put on TV and it appears that something is happening in Atlanta.

Watch my book trailer. That’s a respite thing.
Not Max: Good. You scared us. Or me anyway.

An uplift from Louisville’s protest last night – white protesters line up as barrier between African American protesters and the police:

@Martin: Amazing that a person who was director of DIA would not realize that Kislyak’s phone was tapped.

@NotMax: Nice! Margaritas and mojitos, here you go!
Watching Hannah Gadsby’s new show on Netflix. The kind of comedy that I can actually appreciate.

@NotMax: good to hear. We want you healthy, dammit!

Shall endeavor to make up for it with a little something amusing and entertaining in the next morning thread. Unless I nap through it.

@JPL: Demonstrations across the US tonight. I’m keeping a Twitter thread of them, but I’m leaving the computer in a few minutes.

Local CBS station is saying that the Atl protest is peaceful except for that one police car.. hmm

Except this worked. And a worthy successor to the squirrel video it is.
As I qualify as a resident overseas, I just returned my online ballot and have the satisfaction of having done my part to try to end Susan Collins’ political career.
The Bahamas has reached Phase 3 of their five-phase reopening. Yesterday I got off the rock for the fourth time since early November and went to the grocery and liquor stores on the “big” island. Masks and distancing still are required, and we’ve just started the usual weekend lockdown (til Tuesday, as Monday’s a holiday). The last of 11 deaths was more than a month ago. The destruction from Dorian remains almost total, though.

@Dorothy A. Winsor: Mrs Japa and I are getting our hairs cut on Monday. She can’t wait and I have decided to make a major change in mine.

@NotMax:
Okay, I hope you continue to feel good.
WaterGirl
@Cheryl Rofer: My first thought when I saw that protests are happening across the US was good. We need to not rage at the injustice and then eventually move on to something else. Time’s up, boys in blue. I hope your thin blue line gets trampled.
But then the fear of what might happen to these brave people comes to mind and I worry about eruptions of violence from the police, not the protestors.
Die fighting or die with a knee on your neck. That’s some choice.

@Skepticat:
Just wanted to see that again and enjoy the thrill vicariously.

@NotMax:
Feelin’ Alright?
Not feelin’ too good myself….
