Iowa tells workers to return to their jobs or lose unemployment benefits, despite warnings that reopening could lead to a second wave of infections https://t.co/ZOcnXq6CKt via @businessinsider
— Carlton Livingston (@100lbAColliweed) April 29, 2020
I have friends and family in Iowa. No provisions for someone who might be vulnerable, no provisions for someone who might live with someone who is vulnerable. Just get your lazy ass back to work.
First, someone that I do business with (as a customer no less) decided to spew Republican talking points at me about it and that people will take advantage. I was waiting for her to come at me with “strong bucks and t-bone steaks.” I let her know I wasn’t buying it about these hypothetical deadbeats and wanted to know when we were going to talk about the businesses taking advantage of workers by putting profit over their safety. Her reply was, “Oh, wow” like I’d said something drastic like “So pro-life only means in the womb, right?” She then deleted all her comments.
Then, my cousin, who is a retired minister came at me with the same BS. My response: “Who would Jesus kill for profit, amirite?”
I think I’m banned from future family reunions (not really, my godmother is a retired minister who is totally liberal…or as she likes to call it, “a follower of the teachings of Christ”). ETA: He just came back at me with “we can agree to disagree and still be family, right” I’ll think about it.
Anyway, I’ve had it with these fuckers and they all need to be called on the carpet and then crushed under my heel. You want to preach the economy over lives, then the next woman who says, “this unexpected pregnancy is going to wreak havoc on my personal economy,” better be first in line for an abortion without any protest from these frauds. Because as we know, profits are all that matter.
If we and our Democratic leaders do not make them own each and every one of these comments from now until no one remembers what a Republican was, except to compare them to Nazis, we are fools. And worse, dishonoring all those who died because of this outrage.
And yes, having had this stupid virus, I am taking all of this personally. And I’m worried beyond words for those around me who may succumb to it.
BTW, I’m fine, thanks for asking ? ’cause I know you’re gonna. I’m on day 3 of feeling pretty darn good. But I will tell you the fatigue is impressive. And there were a few days/nights that were very hairy, but those passed and the rest was pretty mild.
Okay, back to my rant. I am mad as hell and really am not going to take it anymore. Come at me with bullshit and I’m going to fight back – friends, family, business, I. Do. Not. Care.
I feel better now.
/rant
I will try and have something respite-like later. No promises though, I may need a nap after this.
Baud
I’m glad you are feeling better, TaMara.
Ms. Deranged in AZ
I’m totally with you on this. As I posted a couple of weeks ago I’ve unfriended and stopped speaking to one of my siblings. And I’ve stopped having political conversations with family members. Although it takes every bit of strength in my body to bite my tongue whenever they post pro-trump GOP talking points online…. I mostly try to avoid it now.
Also, too, very glad you are on the mend.
Damien
I really wonder what the reaction would be to a woman saying “I will lose 35 basis points off my yearly profit if I continue this pregnancy. With no foreseeable equity offerings in the market for this product within our five year projections, and severe deleterious effects on earning potential each quarter for three quarters at least, this investment does not make fiscal sense at this time.”
MBA it back at them.
Miss Bianca
I’m with you, TaMara. I have not only had it with the RWNJs, but with the leftier-than-thou getting their Two Minute Hate on Joe Biden. Like one of the Democratic Party officials in Denver who decided to rant about how bad Democrats fuck up all the time and how we’ve elected the weakest possible candidate to go up against Trump, yada yada and it’s like JESUS CHRIST YOU ‘ECONOMICALLY ANXIOUS WHITE WORKING CLASS MALE’ MORAN, do you think this is fucking HELPING anything? Do you REALLY think I want to listen to you rant about liberal Democrat betrayal and how Bernie totally woulda coulda shoulda won when Joe Biden and all the other Democrats running at the national level are all that is fucking standing between me and you sitting next to each other in the FEMA camps?
Honestly, at this point I’d rather read Jennifer Rubin, Bill Kristol, and David Frum talk about the clear and present danger that Trump presents, because they at least seem to realize that he’s actually, by several factors of ten, worse than Joe Biden, than listen to my so-called erstwhile ‘allies’.
Wapiti
Thanks for the rant.
My crazy socialistic proposal for businesses that are deemed essential: if the product is so essential, then let the owner
foregoforgo the profits – divide the profits among the workers until the crisis has passed. The owner keeps the business going, maintains his ties to his customers, etc., but the workers are critical. If the owner isn’t willing to deal, it’s his profits that are essential, not his product.
satby
Just had the same experience with a friend on FB, who deleted my comment taking her friend to task for saying Trump has to go and she was going to vote for Amash. “No attacking people in her wall”. So I dumped her ignorant ass. Over the toxic ignorati and their civility police enablers.

Rant on Tamara!
Had to work all day–essentially a 6 hour conference call. But at lunch and now, listening to the all-day 87th birthday salute at KUTX-Austin to Mr. Willie Nelson. Just heard one new to me, a rant directed at music executives, but easily redirected to others (written by Willie): Write Your Own Songs:
“Mr. Purified Country don’t you know what the whole things about
Is your head up your ass so far that you can’t pull it out
The world’s getting smaller and everyone in it belongs
And if you can’t see that Mr. Purified Country
Why don’t you just write your own songs”
The Fat Kate Middleton
So glad you’re starting to feel better, Tamara. I’ve lived all my long life in Iowa. I’ve always loved my state, and it wasn’t until the misguided Bush administration that I could no longer feel pride in it. That said- I can’t tell you how much I loathe that bitch. Every bad thing you’ve all been wishing for the Trumps, for McConnell, and for every Republican, I wish for her.
trollhattan
My last people in Iowa was my granny, on dad’s side. A Roosevelt Democrat she would not have taken these people and their ways, and was very direct and outspoken when displeased. Iowa is schizophrenic as hell. They have three Dem Reps yet send Grassley, Ernst and Steven Fucking King repeatedly to Washington and now this monster of a governor, who gets her hair done at Ernst’s shop.
Over +1. Nothing is drawing me back to Iowa other than visiting graves so we’ll call it an armistice. My kid doesn’t need to see those graves that much and my childhood home has been scraped away.

The reason for using a handle rather than my real name, and why I am not on Facebook, is this whole post.
I can get along well with my sisters, okay with my mom and brother, and would particle-beam my highschool from orbit. I do NOT want to correspond with my cousins on my mom’s side, because half of them are RWNJs. They all unfriended my mom when Obama was elected and my mom started posting a “cool Obama thing” to her Facebook page every day. Shitheads.
I moved 1500 miles to get away from the stupids that I grew up among. I’m already on blood pressure meds; I do not need the aggravation that the fucking moron crowd brings.
One good thing (well, kinda): All those people going back to work are going back to stores empty of shoppers. Which means in a week, they’ll be laid off because the stores can’t make payroll from their sales. Idiot Governors (and Simon Malls) beware.

Rant on, TaMara! I’m in IL and we are NOT relaxing, though some idiots want to (and a state rep Bailey on down south is judged personally exempt from our Gov’s orders. Whatever that means.) I’m fearful for my sister, an ER nurse in Chicago, because if hospitals get overwhelmed, more caretakers get sick. Slowing things down keeps our resources more stable. Yeah, I want a haircut, too. But opted instead to buy some expensive-ass shampoo from my stylist as a means of supporting her business, while supporting the S-I-P order. GAH! People don’t get it!

@FlyingToaster: I’m right there with you. I grew up on the Gulf coast and my old hometown is a hotbed of Trumpism. My cousins range from Bush Republican to Alex Jones Nutbags.
I have no time or patience for that.

Look, these businesses are not government run, owned or funded. They aren’t the Air Traffic Control Folks Reagan bulldozed. They aren’t the military. They’re private, for-profit businesses.
This means that any person employed by them has not only the right NOT to work for them, but still retains other employment rights under Federal law. What needs to happen is for organizations like the ACLU to take legal action on the behalf of these people in the Federal and State courts to protect their rights.

The title. Sounded like this was going to be a Cole rant.
Glad you are recovering well, TaMara. And good on you for setting some of these morons straight.

They don’t want to say it outright, but this is really about them being inconvenienced by everything being shut down. They want to be able to get their hair and nails done, damn it, and they just don’t care that doing so puts others’ lives at risk. How dare the peons worry more about dying than about doing their jobs!

@Miss Bianca:
Jesus Christ, that reminds me of my former local Democratic Party chairman. He’s a sleazy lawyer who complained after the 2018 midterms about the Dems “always losing.” We suffered some (narrow) losses at the state level.
The guy who won state rep (tied himself to Trump) and was pushing a bill to severely restrict the use of local governments in Ohio to use eminent domain for things like bike trails died last month, so it’s an open seat again. I’m hoping that even the Conservadem we tend to put up will win next time

TaMara,
Glad you are feeling better and doing well~!!~ That’s the best news of the day… well that and the puppy who was rescued in the art piece earlier today.
We had a tree fall and crash into the house early this afternoon. Gusty winds brought it down into the front door area, bending the roof over the porch a little, popping some sheetrock nails inside the house, scaring everyone witless. It missed the Generac whole house generator by 14-18 inches or so…
Have had a Davey tree guy stop by to look at things, he thinks they can get the tree removed mostly done tomorrow. Expecting a call from an insurance adjuster either later today or in the morning. I’m not sure what to do about the bent roof. Something inside the roof structure is broken…..
Pictures to follow.
TaMara (HFG)
@Miss Bianca: I want names. Because I’m feeling feisty.

@J R in WV: Oh no. Glad no worse damage.

I am very relieved that my one Trumper cousin shut her piehole after she worked the WI election in a mask and gloves. And the only remaining Trumper relative I have any Facebook contact with seems to have gone pretty quiet now that Florida is getting hit despite all of her whining about it being a hoax. Whoops! Sorry, honey, but Rona doesn’t care whether or not you believe in her.

TaMara, I couldn’t agree with you more. And you, having suffered through this thing, have more right than most to tear a new hole in folks. These so-called pro-life folks (head-shake) I tell ya. They don’t fit my definition of pro-life At. All.
I’ve never had much patience for right-wing hypocrites, which is why those of that persuasion in my family had pretty much parted ways with me back in the Obama administration. I did reconnect with my oldest sister a week or two ago, after having no contact with her since I called her when my older sister died in 2014. Prior to my sister’s death I probably hadn’t talked to her since I called to see how she was doing in 2010. She had talked and visited regularly with the sister who died, but had cut herself off from my younger sister and me. She’s still a RWNJ, but she she behaved herself for the 20 minutes or so that we talked, and I felt good about reestablishing contact. I might even call her again in another 6 years, when she’s 81!

@Kay (not the front-pager): I rarely post political stuff on FB, I figure it’s not worth it. But this wasn’t even really political – it was about reopening the state too fast and what the health experts were saying and the Gov pushing workers back to work. I didn’t even comment on it…they’re all a bit sensitive these days. Comes from knowing they’re on the wrong side of history and in the minority.
dnfree
I have had repeated conversations on Facebook with “pro-life” people I know. I had previously told them that if they don’t oppose the death penalty and favor universal health care, they’re not really pro-life, they’re just anti-abortion. They don’t agree. Now this whole economic impact of the virus, and the claims that we don’t need to shelter, it’s government overreach, are coming from the same people. I too am tired of it. One of my Republican siblings is a never-Trumper and the other is a Trump believer, and they have even gotten into arguments they used to avoid.
Then I found out that “rough edges”, as an excuse referring to Trump’s flaws, is a trigger phrase for me. A long-time friend used it the other night in a phone call and I went off. My husband said he thought he was going to have to replaster the ceiling. It’s just infuriating that these people are so blind, and further that they think it’s we who are blind.

Not to be too dark, but my will and instructions for the house and pets are on a clipboard in my office.

I may not be the best person to ask but I estranged myself from my sister because decades of scientology and massive bad bipolar disorder, which she’d never admit or seek actual help for, because of those decades. My life is complicated enough because of my health, just aging in general, and I’d like to be able to actually be able to retire after 60 years of working and actually enjoy relaxing and not dealing with nearly as many lost causes.
The point is of course, that you need to take care of you and can only be helpful to non lost causes.

DeWine’s another one. Monday, as part of reopening the state, he announced customers would have to wear masks. Yesterday, after getting a talking to by the RWNJs, he changed it to “recommended.” Today, after getting a talking to by the people fearful of the consequences of “recommended,” DeWine said he was standing firm. @West of the Rockies:
They want two things:
(A) They want Biden to step aside and cede the nomination to Bernie, even though they’ve been told 60 thousand times that it doesn’t work that way.
(B) They want to discredit #metoo, which is why Christine Blasey Ford’s name is in their filthy mouths. If you need to shut them up, ask when Tara Reade is going to make a statement under oath the way CBF did … twice. That usually shuts them up. So far, Reade wasn’t even willing to put Biden’s name on the police report that she filed because there are legal penalties for knowingly giving a false statement to the police and she knows it.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Adam L Silverman:
They’re also content to just lie and make shit up about the timeline of the pandemic. Charles C Johnson claimed all of the reports about Trump being informed by the IC about the virus were all lies by the media. He cited Trump’s campaign website as evidence. Now that’s desperation.
Worst of all, all you tend to get from these people are very vague assertions about how the lockdowns aren’t about protecting the public’s health because things like liquor stores are still open or that Bill Gates can’t be trusted because something something he’ll benefit financially from a vaccine

Odd, then, that Democrats in almost every midwestern state voted Biden over Bernie by almost two-to-one, and in the one midwestern I can think of where Bernie beat Biden, Bernie was neck and neck with, and arguably lost to, not Warren, but the aggressively and self-consciously moderate incarnation of Pete “just a guy from the cornfields” Buttigieg

The funniest attempt to “prove” that Biden was in DC at the time was when someone linked to a photo of him being sworn in. About a dozen people pointed out that the caption on the photo explicitly said that he was sworn in at the hospital in Delaware, not in DC, and the photo was taken in Delaware. ?

You mentioned the fatigue, and that’s an important thing to track, because we’re now finding out that people’s O2 saturation levels are dropping dangerously low without their realizing it. And that’ll present primarily as fatigue. The worst thing about fatigue (says the CFS sufferer) is that your head gets a bit fuzzy on things like the passage of time, and the slow, steady, worsening of your situation.
I’d urge people who are dealing with Covid-19 to have someone check on them at least daily, and, make sure they have a method of tracking O2 saturation; as soon as it’s dropping to below 95, get medical advice (and that advice might be “get to the hospital” so be aware of that).
If you live alone, and have no one to check on you, remember it’s really important – this is a time when screaming at yourself, inflicting pain (without injury, please!) or getting angry or scared can help fight off the fuzz while you force yourself to measure your O2 saturation (which you should do multiple times a day). If you track your saturation on paper, you can also put on handy notes in big letters like “UNDER 95 MIGHT MEAN YOU’RE DYING”. (You might be surprised at how hard it is to remember things like that, when you’re oh-so-flipping *TIRED*, that you’re ready to blow off the 93 as “just an outlier”.)
Also, if you have Covid-19, and your O2 sat is low, you might never have been lightheaded, or at risk of fainting, but you might have that risk now. So if you have Covid-19, think about how you can get to the floor safely and quickly if you’re dizzy or lightheaded, and try it once or a few times to make sure you’ve correctly identified the safest/surest method for you. I also find it helps, if I plan where I’m going before I get up, so I have an idea where on the floor I’ll be if something goes wrong. (This is because my house is a cluttered mess – it might not apply to others.)
Also, it’s a great idea to make sure you know where phones are, in case you do get unsteady, or faint. So, e.g., if you have a spare phone to keep in the bathroom (the place I’m most likely to go without my phone), keep one there; or keep your cell with you at all times.
If you’re on the floor and fuzzy brained, and are pondering what to do, the nice people at 911 are probably your best option. Seriously: lock that down in your brain. When you wake up, do your best to make sure you’re in bed (or where ever you chose to rest/sleep) , then check for your phone’s presence and remind yourself “if I didn’t remember how I got here, I’d be calling 911”. When fatigue is really bad, due to low oxygen, your brain is at its worst, but it can remember things you’ve focused on enough.
Oh, and keep in mind that alcohol can make falls/fainting far more likely, all else being equal, meaning you probably don’t want any alcohol in your system, if you’re sick.

I had a little hissy fit on Facebook yesterday. I usually don’t respond to ignorant shit, but I couldn’t help myself. A neighbor posted a CDC info page re UV light treatments done in the 40s and 50s for polio, etc. She then made a comment about thinking outside the box – trying to cover for Trump’s verbal diarrhea last Thursday. That didn’t spur my comment, her husband’s comment did – his last words on his comment was a gleeful, “dems got burned!”
Basically, I said it was hard being a Democrat in a red county, that I avoided Facebook now because in every comment supporting Trump, there was a requisite bash on Democrats. I said I am not gonna vote for a Republican , but I would be damned if I disrespected people if they did (well, not out loud anyway). I’m just so tired of it all. And, I am rapidly running out of f*cks to give.

Then Obama got elected, and it went a little sideways, and then Trayvon Martin got murdered by that shitbag and Pat Lang lost his shit. I mean, he lost it good and hard. As did most of his commentariat. You’d think there’d been a law passed to make it legal for the black folks to shoot all the white people.
It was really sad to watch. I don’t even think it took a week to go utterly to shit. I think raven and I got banned the same week or close to it. I was in my early forties back then and still naive enough to think that America, with the election of Obama, had pretty much moved on past racism against black folk. Oh, was I ever wrong about that. What is he supposed to say? This really super-duper didn’t happen? I have a very clear memory of the staffer who supervised the interns for six months thirty years ago, and she had a great set of gams (and that part of her story is utterly credible to me), but I never attacked her in a public hallway? Is he supposed to go through her online history and do a power point of all the inconsistencies?
Zelma
I am so angry about the Biden/Reade story and the way it is being covered. I just turned off Chris Hays because he was having Rebecca Traister on to “discuss” the story. We all know that Biden is a hugger and that this behavior upsets some people. He hugs everybody or at least he did. Now not so much.
But the idea that he would have done what Reade suggests seems improbable to say the least. It seems unlikely that he would do something like this a single time and unlikely that a pattern of this behavior would not have been uncovered when he was vetted for VP. And that she told a neighbor two years or so after something supposedly happened is not proof of anything.
I do believe it is an axiom of logic that you cannot “prove” a negative and this is what Biden is being asked to do. We have entered territory “but her emails” and the press is demonstrating the same behavior: anything for a story.

It could be she’s just a not-very-good writer.
By the way, there’s a pretty thorough takedown of Reade on Twitter by ‘Ms. Krassenstein’.

Not melting at harsh language would be a good start, kitten. We’re going up against fascists. In the literal, not pejorative sense. They will not be bound by any sense of honor, decency, or fair play.
We didn’t beat them the first time by appealing to their humanity. We did it by stomping them into the ground, then teaching them to be human again when we’d finished. If you had to physically fight for your right to vote, would you be ready to? If not, why not? It may come to that. You saw what happened in Charlottesville. You’ve heard Trump encourage violence from his supporters.
This is going to be the ugliest election of our lives, and the soul of our country is at stake. Our opponent represents all of the worst instincts of human nature, and they’re going to hit at us where they think it hurts the most, without a shred of remorse.

That’s why Biden should release the statement: “I like beer.” and “She’s not my type” with a copy of his 1993 daily schedule, where there’s no mention of plans to sexually assault anyone.

Before I read a single comment let me say thank you. That was one righteous rant! I don’t smoke and I still want a cigarette after that!
The Moar You Know
@Cacti: Ain’t nobody on this thread going to give anything you say any credibility at this point, which is too bad, because you’ve just made a very good point here. Barring a provable miracle cure, Trump’s losing in November. And his cult is not going to go quietly. There will be quite a bit of violence leading up to the election and a lot more afterwards. The left in this nation is not in any way prepared for what is going to happen.
Y’all thought Wisconsin was bad? Wait until getting to your polling place involves running a gauntlet of 3 percenters, all carrying, and they will have copies of the voting list. Are you prepared to vote under such conditions? Because, in at least some places, those conditions will exist.

@Zelma:
Did you see the look Rachel gave him at the end? She was not pleased.
Agree about Dr. Ducolos, she’s heartbreaking.

@Subsole: Obama didn’t give up his Birth Certificate…he dropped it like a bomb that shut everyone up. I have the mug to prove it.

@Cacti:
I love that you think “You can’t stop me from swearing on the internet, mommy!” is “fighting”.
Subsole
@Cacti: I just asked you to do that and you shot me down though!!!!!
I hear what you are saying. And I’m not sure I have a good answer. I look like them. So if someone gets harassed or worse, it ain’t likely to be me. That kind of limits my useful contribution to that topic. Are you suggesting like mutual defense groups or something? Because yeah, having someone to watch your back and have the ACLU on speed-dial might not be a bad idea in some places. Probably wouldn’t hurt to have a plan for if ICE is standing outside the booth harassing folks. Maybe we could have a post on that.
As far as getting some fucked-up personal-abuse life-coach to make a man outta me, or some shit? Hard pass. Been there, seen that, didn’t work.
I just don’t see how generational tirades are useful. Y’know how tiresome that okay boomer shit is? Yeah. Same deal.
Anyway, fuck the GOP, not each other, is what I’m saying. We’re gonna bump each other occassionally. Easier to just say sorry and move on.
Spare y’all listening to my long-winded ass, at least.

@Chyron HR: I have black belt in one martial art, am proficient in another that doesn’t have belts, and am currently studying a third. I’ve fought competitively at the amateur level, and have been punched, kicked, and thrown at full force. I’ve never been shot at, but if any Trump cultist ever feels like having a scuffle, I’m more than happy to oblige them, and fairly confident that I won’t get the worst of it.
Some liberals may not be prepared to fight for their rights. I’m not one of them. Can you say the same?
Subsole
@Cacti: So just say “you folks clearly think rules only apply to democrats and never republicans. Any rule that only applies to one team is not a rule.”?
I’d like that.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Huh, Chris Hayes trending on twitter and looks like most people are pissed at him. Maybe he’ll notice and actually look beneath the surface of these allegations now that he’s promoted them. One of the Berner tweets says “neoliberals” of course and “a celebrity” are going after him. I don’t see the “celebrity”. I’m gonna bet it’s not Sarandon.

@TaMara (HFG): Made in America! I drink out of that mug every day!

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: So unlike Hayes to desperately carry water for Bernie’s candidacy.
