Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Reality always wins in the end.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Trump is going to draw a dick on that dog with a sharpie, isn’t he?

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Shock troops for the Unitarian Jihad.

This blog goes to 11…

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Yes we did.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

We need fewer warriors in public service and more gardeners.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

We survived Breitbartpocalypse!

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

Han shot first.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

This is all too absurd to be reality, right?

This blog is Obama’s Katrina.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Call the National Guard if your insurrection lasts more than four hours.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The universe of shitty things I can endure without completely losing my fucking mind keeps expanding, but I don’t know, guys — this might be the limit:

“We have achieved all the different milestones that are needed. So, the government, federal government rose to the challenge and this is a great success story and I think that that’s really what needs to be told.” — Jared Kushner

Jared Kushner on Trump's coronavirus response: "The federal government rose to the challenge, and this is a great success story." pic.twitter.com/zmd7L6uC6M

Not content to hide out in the West Wing after mismanaging a pandemic in such a way that tens of thousands of Americans are dead, and more than a million are infected, and there aren’t enough tests, and the economy is collapsing, and 30% of renters didn’t pay their rent because they got no money, and food banks are overrun and and and — these Trump administration motherfuckers want to be PRAISED for their performance. It’s not just Trump; it’s all of them.

Don’t know about y’all, but just as soon as it’s safe to participate in an angry mob, I intend to join one. Voting these grifting ghouls out won’t be nearly enough. I want them to have to flee the goddamned country, change their names and undergo reconstructive surgery.

So anyone expecting this skidmark to do anything in the public’s interest is just wasting their time. A New York business executive recalled a meeting with Kushner at the White House last fall. “I told Jared that if Trump won a second term, he wouldn’t have to worry about running again and you can really help people. Jared just looked at me and said, ‘I don’t care about any of that.’” The executive came away shaken. “I wanted to tell Jared you don’t say that part out loud, even in private,” he later said.

Like all substance/domestic abusers, the Trump crime family never, ever says “Well, let me just put my head down and get through this as best I can.” They never, ever let the fact that they are in the middle of a fuckup of their own making stop them from saying “How can I come out of this with MORE (fill in the blank) than I had before?”

And I hope Trump lives long enough to see his grandchildren take his name off their buildings because they can’t stay in business any other way.

They pissed away several weeks[1] of exponential “pandemic time”. Several doublings worth of time. 10s of thousands of deaths on their hands. Ten Thousand[2] Benghazis!  (etc).
I am appalled, and frankly, surprised, by the proven incompetence of my country at the national level.

As a (not so minor) side effect, the delay and lack of testing meant that the only remaining measure was destruction of the economy. So they (f-in!) own that too.

[1] That’s generous; more like 2 months wasted.

I keep hearkening back to what Kay said about the self-styled MOTU crowd – both Trumps and Trumpites. It’s not just that they feel entitled to lie, cheat and steal their way to grabbing everything that isn’t nailed down or locked up – it’s not just that they’re so stunningly *bad* at everything, and that everything they touch turns to shit – it’s that on *top* of all that, they expect us to to love and praise them for the screwing they’re giving us, and they whine incessantly when we don’t. It’s nauseating.

Anyway, they should be testing asymptomatic people anyway.  Bah.  I’m just staying away from people.  I yell at my neighbor on his porch, he yells back.  I tell tales to the little boys across the street while we yell across the street.  We are old people but then they look at my old husband differently when I tell them about the time he helped some Fish and Wildlife guys pull a bad tooth out of a wild grizzly.  Who was, of course, tranquilized at the time.  I’m getting a story ready for next week’s session of “we weren’t always ancient.”

The sign of a true douche-bag: we’re doing a fantastic job (of conning the public).

At the very beginning of this crisis I wrote: If there was a major bank crash, or economic meltdown like 2008, do you think Trump & Co. would tell the public the truth? If there was a power grid failure or sabotage, would you trust the Federal government to tell the public the straight story? If there was an incident along the lines of Chernobyl or Fukushima, would you trust Trump to level with the public about the danger? I know I wouldn’t.

We need someone who can competently do the job of being the president, not just host a stupid reality show.

So one of my tweets got discussed on some “progressive” show – slamming the senate for passing a bad stimulus bill. My objection was not really that it was good or bad, but our side typically use framing that elicits strong reactions before we get all the pieces of information. .eg we are already losing before everyone has weighed in. I’ve been caught many times passing along information without critically looking at it.  I got a lot of likes on that one hehe.

Wealth.  Like Trump, he inherited so much money that it’s hard to lose it, no matter how hard he tries.  According to the stories I’ve read, born out by watching him speak, his management style is to breeze in, spout some buzzwords as if they’re divine wisdom, breeze out to be outwitted by other rich people at a party, and leave his subordinates to try and turn his gibberish into something real.

which explains why his father-in-law is all on board with him.

I really think Jared is Trump’s best friend.  They’re exactly the level of stupid to see eye to eye, and it is a breathtaking level of stupid.  I bet that when Jared declares they’ll solve the Middle East crisis by selling real estate or suggests stealing PPE from the states for resale by third parties, Trump goes “That’s brilliant!  If I had a son, I would want him to be like you.”

They’re angrier now after 3 and 1/2 years of getting everything they claimed to want. And they’re even more angry right now because COVID-19 is being mean to them and the President.

LOL a Democratic win in November will do anything except stem the bleeding in an already dead patient.

It would take concerted court-packing over a very short period of time, and even assuming that a Democratic majority in the Senate with the median vote being Manchin or Bullock or Synema would be OK with it, President Biden won’t be.

The courts are lost for two generations

In a response to questions about the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, and whether Johnson regrets any elements of it, Downing Street did not accept any criticisms. A spokesperson replied in a statement:

I stole this from a comment on NMMNB.

Washington (DC) – In an interview with FOX and Friends this morning Jared Kushner expressed pleasure at the Trump administration’s handling of the Coronavirus pandemic, and said we should all take pride in the federal response to the crisis.

“Experts said we would have 60,000 dead by late August, and we’ve hit that target here in late April,” said Kushner. “This is just one more example of this Trump administration exceeding its goals, getting the job done ahead of schedule, ahead of budget, and ahead of expectations.”

I have worked with many Jared Kushners over a long career financing commercial real estate. The arrogance and entitlement are exponentially greater than any semblance of intelligence.

@Baud: Sorry to hear, and hope you are much better and shake the virus, soonest.

More on Baud Toes.  WaPost.  Should be a free click. It’s a good article.

‘Frostbite’ toes and other peculiar rashes may be signs of hidden coronavirus infection, especially in the young

As a dermatologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Esther Freeman was prepared for things to be a bit quieter during the pandemic lockdown. But not too long after it began, she started getting urgent calls about odd frostbite-like patches showing up on people’s toes.

The rash itself was rather harmless. While some complained of a burning sensation, the inflammation usually disappeared on its own in two to three weeks without treatment. What was striking is that many of those patients had tested positive for covid-19.

“My inbox and my telemedicine clinic are full of just toes. It’s all about toes. I have never seen so many toes,” Freeman said. [Shades of Quentin Tarantino.]

The curious phenomenon has also caught the interest of researchers in hot zones such as France, Italy and China. But the reports had been mostly limited to individual case studies and first-person observations, making it difficult to determine what these rashes mean, why they are occurring and how they are linked to the virus.
    ….

And in the same way the first sign of infection for some may be loss of smell and taste — those are among the six new covid-19 symptoms the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added to its list Monday — the toe rashes may be an early marker of disease, or possibly one that it has resolved and passed.

One of the clearest findings of the new paper is that most patients with “covid toes” were asymptomatic or had only mild symptoms. Another is their age. Nearly all were children or adults in their 20s and 30s — a group that as a whole tends to have a less severe bodily response to the disease than their older counterparts.

Freeman, a Harvard Medical School researcher who led the analysis in collaboration with the American Academy of Dermatology, said the information should be comforting to those who have seen the lesions on themselves or loved ones.
    …

“Most of the patients were young, healthy and had a benign clinical course,” she said.

“The message to the public is not to panic,” she added. “I don’t want people to think if they are having purple spots on their toes that they are going to end up on a ventilator in the ICU. That is not what we are seeing in the data.”

…. This type of rash, called pernio or chilblains, usually occurs in the dead of winter because of exposure to cold, such as when a person is slogging in freezing rain in wet socks. But covid-19 patients are getting it in springtime. Doctors also typically see the rash in people who work as florists or in warehouses that are not temperature-controlled — not in children, as is happening now.

“The truth is nobody knows why this is happening and why it’s happening in the toes and fingers,” said Ebbing Lautenbach, chief of the division of infectious diseases at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.

One theory is that it may be related to inflammation and blood-clotting complications, he said, which more and more doctors suspect are a cause of some covid-19 deaths.

“As you get away from the core of the body out to the periphery, the blood vessels get smaller, so they are more susceptible to inflammation and clotting,” Lautenbach explained.

I’m not a violent person, but I must confess, imagining Jared’s smarmy face saying the federal government did *great* gives me a deep, visceral understanding of – I’ve heard there’s a word, in another language, meaning “a face that needs a fist” (DuckDuckGo suggests “Backpfeifengesicht”). This is an aesthetic comment, mind you, not a suggestion for action!

My nurse sister-in-law, who’s been working 12 hour shifts for over a month with chronic shortages of PPE has just tested positive, and is praying she doesn’t give it to her daughter who’s recovering from a severe infection that resulted from a car crash. I’m so tired of this Put America Back to Work BS.  We’re not even close to being ready.   Sign me up for Team Angry Mob.
