China's confirmed #Covid19 cases are getting to very low levels — only 44 new cases on March 7 & 27 deaths.

Will other countries try China's #Covid19 containment measures? Could they? Would populations comply? Pandemic response science will be a brisk & burgeoning field when this is all over. https://t.co/C7SkpqRBSC

In terms of someone having to be the first to do it, it's probably for the best that it was a country which is politically difficult for the president to flip the fuck out on. https://t.co/n7zjkbLa4M

Hong Kong had every reason to have an exponential epidemic (lots of travel from Wuhan/China) and yet has dramatically slowed the spread. Two deaths total. Probably: with memory of SARS, they responded quickly with closures, universal mask wearing, social distancing and hygiene. https://t.co/0Zv5DJQ2R2

Want to see what a good govt resp to #COVID19 looks like? Check out Taiwan's checklist of 124 actions including production of 44M masks and widespread testing before they had a single conf'ed case. So far, only 30 cases there, despite prox to China.https://t.co/KWEUfTmfnU

South Korea's ability to massively test for nCoV is a direct outgrowth of their screw up on the MERS epidemic. Democracies may fail from time to time, but they learn better.

Very dramatic extension of the “red zone” of total exclusion in Italy in an effort to contain COVD-19. It includes both the economic powerhouse of Milan and the touristic epicenter of Venice. It’s truly an emergency for the country. pic.twitter.com/mhoS7XRjux

This is *not* to endorse any of the bullshit 'deliberate virus' theories. But biosafety accidents happen in labs worldwide, and some guy not washing his hands thoroughly enough and then getting a bite to eat after working in the lab is a perfectly plausible scenario.

anyway if they actually discovered this was the case, it may be one of the reasons they're so desperately pushing the lie it didn't start in China. But it could also be routine anti-Americanism and stability paranoia!

All the states in grey on this map (showing no coronavirus) also have authoritarian governments.
Perhaps they all scared SARS-CoV-2 away?
Or perhaps there is a correlation.
We’ll find out in 10 weeks or less when thousands of people fall sick and tens are dying. https://t.co/pMgYyxQBvR

That death total in Iran is staggering when compared to the known number of infected persons.

I have been out of action the past three days due to sudden bleeding in digestive tract, probably in the stomach. Had to visit the ER and now preparing for hospital stay of at least several more days.
I am doing better now, with internal bleeding seemingly stopped.
Needless to say, now is a rather uncomfortable time to be visiting a hospital in Wuhan, but the experience has been enlightening and largely reassuring. Will share more later.
Thanks for the thoughts of concern!

I read an article in the NYT by two expat Iranian doctors. They attributed the high incidence of Covid-19 cases among government officials to: 1) frequent travel by politicians from Teheran to Qom, which is a political as well as religious center, and 2) the custom of men in public forums greeting each other by kissing each other’s cheeks. There is an aspect of dominance/subservience to this custom, like paying homage. The more powerful the politician, the more kisses. Two members of parliament have died so far, and other officials as well.

Apologies if this has already been shared, but I’ve found this chart of Covid-19 Global Cases from Johns Hopkins to be really informative.

@opiejeanne: I wouldn’t believe the official numbers from Iran at all (or many other countries for that matter).
For instance, this video and twitter:

There’s another video I saw on twitter, inside a hospital, with a huge crowd clamoring for help. But I can’t find it this morning. Very disturbing.
Finding a lot of videos, many too sad to even link to. This is awful.

Re this, he’s succumbing to conceptual biases IMO. It is considerably more likely that say 5 people took home infected animals (bats or somethings infected by bats), prepared them, ate them, and one or more of them or their close contacts became infected during the process. I.e. the priors I’m using suggest that the root of this is (hopefully was) practices involving eating of many species of non-livestock animals.
It is unfortunate that nationalism will be getting in the way of release of the results of any proper forensics-based attribution though. (Asshole SOS M. Pompeo didn’t help matters.)
