This video from CPAC 2015 of Trump telling Hannity he's likely to run for president and describing himself as the "king of building walls" is interesting in hindsight. The past 5 years have really aged all of us. (video via Time) pic.twitter.com/SYR1vupirq

To be honest, we still do… before we burst out sobbing / screaming.
Pornhub, YouPorn and XXXVideo are reporting unusually high traffic coming from the Alexandria and Fort Washington area which coincidentally is where CPAC is currently being held.

Well, CPAC has freedom of association. And to be fair, Steve King is much more representative of their views than Mitt Romney.https://t.co/UXW1uqf81c

One underappreciated feature of young reactionaries is that they are *palapably* jealous of the left's cultural power & desperately, desperately want to be invited to cool parties of their own. https://t.co/GuDMTRvvIE

Let's dispense with the notion that CPAC is anything more than ComicCon for people who boycott Star Wars

SRSLY!
Apparently, 2020 Katsucon, an annual 3-day fan convention and CPAC are taking place at the same time and place – the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center National Harbor, MD

This was not the proper post to read right before going to bed. Looking at the bright side, I suppose the Stupid-to-English translators are finding a lot of work over there.

I think fundamentally this explains what happened to the Republican Party. “Let’s do what we can to help people,” is an intrinsically popular position with a lot of people, and will give you a lot of cultural power. “Let’s keep taxes low so wealthy families can stay wealthy without needing to work at it,” is stupid in a way that isn’t even popular with most stupid people; that just gets you ignored. “It’s all their fault, and we’re going to make them pay!” is popular, for a certain definition of popular. You get invited to parties that way. (Specifically the NSDAP, but hey, a party’s a party.)

I’m about 24 hours late with this (as always) but someone was looking for female scientist documentaries and I need to suggest The Secret of Photo 51. It’s about pioneering British scientist Rosalind Franklin: https://vimeo.com/12471144
Crick and Watson (unapologetically) stole her work on DNA and hogged all the credit, basically cheating her out of a Nobel prize. Watson still laughs about it to this day. It’s maddening to watch but really informative—and it’s narrated by film goddess/Alien ass-kicker Sigourney Weaver!

These are not the words of “it’ll get better, just walk it off.” — Global stocks have entered correction territory and it’s now that we can start to consider the market is entering the period of peak fear.

Re Dow: the Purchasing Manager’s Index specific to manufacturing has been in negative territory for a year. A “manufacturing recession.” We can thank Trump’s tariffs for that. The falling stock market will almost certainly push the general economy into recession. I know I among many others was hurt by the last one, and I really hope this one is not deep or prolonged. But, it will hurt Trump. The strong economy has been the mainstay of his support. The annual deficit will blow way past one trillion dollars, and Trump talked big in 2016 about ending the deficit. “Promises kept” is a Trump campaign theme but he sure hasn’t keep that one. And Trump will blame everyone but himself. Nobody likes a whiner. Except other whiners. This is big trouble for Trump.
Robert Sneddon
@hervevillechaizelounge: Rosalind Franklin was secretive about the results of her research for some reason and what she did report publicly about her investigations into the structure of DNA were wrong, as it turned out. What she did have was a very good lab technician working for her who produced superior photographic evidence of the structure of crystalline DNA using X-rays. Those images are what Watson saw/stole and understood at a glance based what he and Crick had derived on their own.
It makes for a good conspiracy theory, a woman genius done down by a sexist establishment and denied her rights but the reality was a lot more complicated. Science is mostly the art of telling others what you’re doing and what you’ve found out and Rosalind Franklin wasn’t doing that part of the job.
She died of cancer before the work on DNA was rewarded by a nomination for the Nobel Prize so she was never eligible to receive it in any case, it’s not that her Prize was “stolen”.

I would like to see some of the people being kicked out of CPAC to ironically shout out “You’re violating my 1st Amendment rights!”

Re: the subject, we could never laugh at people who made the news preaching hatred against their friends and neighbors, without any repercussions.
There was a time when we might have thought that they’d crap the bed badly enough, the stench would drive away anyone remotely moderate, but, the GOP has a *very* clever method of letting most of their politicos benefit from the hatred and division, while never having to indulge themselves.
The best part of their ploy? Let the Dixie Chicks point out that they’re ashamed the President, who just lied us into a war, was a *Texan*, and Democrats have to be asked what they think about it. Let CPAC speakers say that some huge percentage of the women in this country should be hounded down, charged with murder, and executed, and “well, I don’t attend CPAC, I don’t know anything about this.”
No need to condemn, because, hey, you can call someone a baby killer a dozen or more times on national TV, and still act shocked, *shocked*,
to find gambling”… “your winnings from the tables, sir”that someone decided to plant said baby killer.
