I can’t quite tell from the photo. Is that a kid’s “Happy 2nd Birthday” banner, or do they sell them for dogs?

Happy birthday Biscuits and Luna.
I had a fun work phone call today:
Person 1: [to Person 2] Are you ready to implement the new computer system.
Person 2: [Complete pendant to the point he will Reply All to an email to correct your spelling or punctuation] In the words of Winston Churchill, it will be a day that lives in infamy.
Me: FDR.
P2: What?
Me: FDR said that.

Ant & Bee threw a birthday party for Dog. They got him a new kennel as a gift and made a birthday cake out of biscuits because he didn’t like sweet cake. I must have read that book to my kids 1000 times.

I’m baking a pup cake next week for my dog’s birthday. He’ll be 7. His birthday present is to go to doggie daycare that he loves. He gets to go swimming and do a lure course and I am springing for the Happy Birthday celebration that gets me the most adorable photos ever. Have I mentioned this is the most amazing dog daycare place?

@Barbara: Childless me had to google Ant and Bee. Now I know far too much about dog birthday parties.
I went out and bought a bunch of freeze-dried camping food to add to our emergency kit. I needed to do it anyway since we live in earthquake country, but COVID lit a fire under me.

Have you sampled any of it? Anything really tasty?
Once I looked at surplus “meals ready to eat” at Amazon and a couple of other places, but just couldn’t really be bothered.
So, off to a conference on Sunday. At a guess, about a quarter of the attendees in a normal year are from China, so that’s going to be cut way down. I also know of people here who are canceling their trip because of virus fears, which I think is an overreaction at this point but can certainly see why others might disagree. Going to be a somewhat weird experience, most likely.
Puppers with jaunty birthday hats make me happy too! Happy birthday Biscuits and Luna. (Even their names are adorable).

@Mnemosyne: I ordered two bags of dog food from Chewy’s for my Corona virus prep. I figure that if worse comes to worse and we finish the stuff in the freezer, we can always share with the dog.
@Mnemosyne: COVID fire lit here too. I’m going out tomorrow to stock up on stuff. Anyone know where to find masks? The few ones I have here are already slightly used (since I use them for woodworking in the garage).

@Brachiator: Freeze dried camping food is generally pretty decent. Beats any MRE I’ve had by a mile. Mind you, you do have to do a bit of preparation which you don’t with an MRE.
@Brachiator: I might be the only soldier on the planet to say this out loud, but I loved MRE’s when I was in the Army. I really, really liked the dehydrated peaches.
I read the reviews on REI.com and people seemed reasonably pleased. I decided to get camping food rather than “emergency” food because it needs to be halfway decent or campers will stop buying it.
They could be better than about 75% of the meals I was served in the navy. They only beat starvation by about 1 point. Most days.
When ever we pulled into port the local markets/bakeries would run out of bread and stuff to put on it. Bar food was better. Hell McDs was better and that’s swill. OK I’m sorry for giving swill a bad rap. Still….
– Omeals, which are self-heating in a way that seems a little weird but everyone says is functional

@Ruckus: You should have volunteered for the subs. They got fed pretty well. My dad was always a bit shocked at how bad the food was on the surface boats.
Don’t piss off people in an enclosed space, I guess.

So I was trying to figure out how I could boil water for these meals if we didn’t have electricity or natural gas after an earthquake. It turns out that there are little heating packs that are used to warm up MREs — who knew? It’s essentially a double boiler that runs on a chemical reaction of water and quicklime. I saved a couple of options to my Amazon wishlist to review later.

@chris: Thanks for the film link. Pretty cool. The Flatiron Building has a great history. With so many horses in a city of 5 million it must have taken a army to clean the streets. Not Max probably remembers.//

My dog-hating Maltese would have gotten drunk and started a fight. Or hung out with the cats, if there were any at the party.
Don’t piss off people in an enclosed space, I guess.
Or feed them anything that will make them fart.
I realize the thread is dead and buried, but sometimes I like to indulge my inner nine-year-old.

Biscuit and Luna, and a bonus Lily sighting too.
Makes me very happy. Rough week, no? Cheers.

@Mnemosyne: You may never see this but I have had one of these camp stoves for years. It’s gotten me through four multi-day power outages. I live alone so a bottle of gas lasts 2-3 days YMMV

“COVID lit a fire” could be a country song, so long as you pronounce it “faaar.”

Not for anybody sharing your tent.

I’d give him autocorrect amnesty on that one, especially considering his coup on the phone.
