Custom Hat by Sarah Sokol Millinery— MEFeater Magazine (@mefeater) January 27, 2020
I totally want this hat, although given my color preferences, red grosgrain would be more practical (for very specific values of practical). It would certainly improve IRL political discourse.
Lots of elegance at the Grammys tonight. Here is a lady who does justice to a strapless bodice — or, as a dear friend used to call it, ‘the dessert tray’…

For a tiny little chick, this is unexpectly effective. (And when her feet get tired, no need to look for a chair):

As talented as Usher is as a singer and dancer, his Prince tribute just managed to show how amazing Prince actually was. Usher couldn’t touch him. But it’s always good to see Sheila E. onstage and drumming.
glory b
Can we have fashion posts? That would be great!
Shout out to Billy Porter, a fellow Pittsburger! His mother and mine were friends.
Ariana’s dress is similar to a giant pink chiffon gown Rihanna wore once.
jl
All the strange fashion, and, IMHO, rather artificial looks good to me. Does Teigen always look like that? Or did she… oh… never mind. Glad Michelle Obama won. And her looks look very natural, and are great!

Forever FLOTUS is just so wonderful.

I can’t believe that Dr. John died last year. It seems to me like it was 2 or 3 years ago. 2019 was a long ass year.
rikyrah
I love Billy Porter and Lizzo??
John Revolta
@Omnes Omnibus: Just wait.
debbie
Love that hat!
ETA: Nice to see Fortuny making a comeback.
Kent
@glory b: Fashion posts on a blog populated mostly by grumpy older white folk? Owned by a grumpy middle-aged white guy who’s fashion style is probably black socks and sandals at the beach? Heh. That’s going to be interesting.
NotMax
@rikyrah
As Neil Patrick Harris sang during the best opening number ever for an awards show (2013 Tonys):
And you could bounce a quarter
Off the ass of Billy Porter
Lord he does eight shows a week
In eight inch heels
:)
Jim, Foolish Literalist
I suspect if Cole ever found himself at a beach, somehow, he’d be wearing his overalls.
glory b
@Kent: I know, right?
And, speaking of artifice, Alicia Keys is beautiful without makeup.

@NotMax
WaterGirl, if you’re around, why oh why does the new site insist on inserting a blank line that isn’t there in what was typed?
Omnes Omnibus
@Kent: You’d be surprised. There are a lot of people here who have strong opinions about everything.
Omnes Omnibus
To be fair, she is also beautiful with makeup.
The Dangerman
Been a long damn day and this is KIND of fashion related (as opposed to going off topic one floor downstairs)…
…anyway, there is something about Basketball and Football/Soccer that is so much more interesting than some sports. I mean, you almost see it all. Baseball players wear helmets and hats. Football and hockey wear … all sorts of shit.
Ballers and FB/Soccer players are basically playing in their underwear. When they choke, they choke in a very public manner (I mean, what did Scott Norwood look like when he pushed it in the Super Bowl?).
Not sure where that thought it going other than … long damn day. Long damn drive home as I circled well clear of Calabassas and Newbury Park.
jl
@Kent: I thought the Cole in raggedy overalls chic beefcake pix were BJ fashion posts. Huh… hoocuddanode?
Kent
Oh, no doubt. I just question whether the degree of “wokeness” on this block when it comes to politics is going to translate to fashion.

Saw a story about the AlfaAlfa dinner at Jeff Bezos’ DC mansion. For all the crap about the WaPo being a leftie newspaper blah blah almost all the pics but one I saw of the event were RWingers. Ivank and Jared,Elaine Chao, Roy Blunt, Kelly Anne, Paul Ryan, Jim Mattis, Mittens etc. The exception was Jay Carney. BFD. No Dem senators. This is the mansion that Bezos bought for tens of millions of dollars and spent tens of millions fixing it up. Guess he still needs his tax cuts so he’s got to butter up the GOP. I just don’t want to hear about the WaPo being left wing rag.
Anne Laurie
Let’s not forget the ‘going commando in cargo shorts’ posts. With the inevitable… inadvertent public unveiling…
BlueDWarrior
@Kent: I’ll never profess to having a keen eye for fashion. Just what I like or don’t like at any given moment.
Though one thing that always annoys me, male or female, is when someone wears something that doesn’t frame their shape well. Now it doesn’t have to match, but it does need to frame. Though some purple benefit from having a ‘discordant’ outfit, studio it’s not a universal thing for me.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mai naem mobile: FWIW it is my understanding that the dinner is held at the Capital Hilton every year. Where did you see that it was hosted at Bezos’s home?
Kent
@BlueDWarrior: I have three daughters ages 13, 16, and 21.
I know better than to have opinions about fashion. No good comes of going down that path!

Lizzo’s opening number stood out for me. I love her voice. There was a shot of her when Billie Eilish won one of her grammys and Lizzo didn’t look too happy. Normally they fake a smile and give a little clap.
trollhattan
I though “really different look for Billie Eilish” but realized the name is spelled differently.
Omnes Omnibus
@trollhattan: Ha!
Amir Khalid
@The Dangerman:
Football players’ shorts-and-T-shirt kit may look like underwear, but they do wear underpants under the shorts, and in the colder months many wear undershirts that (per FIFA rules) match the uniform.
@Anne Laurie:
I think you mean inadvertent pubic unveiling.
Mary G
I follow fashion despite never wearing any and it is extremely significant that Lizzo’s white dress was custom made by Versace. Hasn’t been a decade since Bryce Dallas Howard had to buy a dress in a store to wear to the Emmys because she was [gasp] a size six, which is tiny compared to the average around 12-14 and no designer lending clothes to the stars went above size two, preferably the oxymoronically named size zero. Christian Siriano, the most successful winner of Project Runway, got the ball rolling when Lesley Jones of SNL tweeted that no one would lend her a dress and he made her one. He also uses differently-sized people in his shows. More designers followed. This is progress. I have not even heard any of Lizzo’s music, but I love her body positivity. She had an astonishing spread and cover in the February issue of Rolling Stone last week. Billy Porter is just a joy, and I would love that hat to wear to parties and never open it.
Mary G
@Omnes Omnibus: It was an after-party.
PJ
@Omnes Omnibus: His last album should be out later this year – they recorded it at his home, when he was able.
Mnemosyne
@jl:
There are some rumors that Teigen may be pregnant or trying to get pregnant. She has been open about the fact that they used IVF for their first two children, and the extra hormones that you have to use for that can create some odd effects in the body, especially in the boob area.
Mai naem mobile
@Omnes Omnibus: on twitter and the Daily.Mail(yeah, I know the Daily Mail but that was from Yasher Ali’s twitter timeline.)
Mai naem mobile
@Omnes Omnibus: I had to look it up again. You’re right the event was at the Hilton. The Bezos event was an after event party.
sukabi
@Omnes Omnibus: after party at Bezos. Dinner where it usually is.
opiejeanne
@Kent: For years I costumed people for theater productions, cabaret shows, ice skating, roller skating, Scottish balls, dance studio recitals (most of my bread and butter),, and The Nutcracker Suite for three years. My costuming got top marks from the harshest critic at the SF Chronicle, even when he didn’t like the play. I retired in 2000 when I moved away from my clients, back to SoCal, and was still in demand. I made 67 costumes after the move and then I really did retire.
So, I have some strong opinions about clothing as costume even though I usually dress like an unmade bed, and Billy Porter’s appearance was divine. 70,000 crystals (rhinestones sounds so tacky), I’m surprised he could walk at all, but I’m glad he dressed up for us all. And the remote control drapes on his hat made my evening. I’m a little jealous of the people who designed and produced what he was wearing because I never got to be that creative.
opiejeanne
@Anne Laurie: I missed that, somehow. Not sure if I’m sorry or relieved.
opiejeanne
@BlueDWarrior: Chrissy Tiegen’s dress is … difficult. Problematic. Fussy.
It does not flatter her shape, which is a nice shape.
David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch
Not bad for a high school senior.
Sab
@opiejeanne: I thought the hat was over the top because I would never wear it . Worked for him, though. I would absolutely wear the rest of the ensemble. Gorgeous. I loved that color.
opiejeanne
@Sab: That color is just gorgeous.
The hat is totally over the top, a hat for an entrance. I’d wear the hat, but only for a little while. After I’d made my entrance and greeted everyone, it would have to come off because I couldn’t stand wearing it for very long. Really, that whole thing would look silly on me because I’m so short, but it works on him.
There was a hot pink vinyl suit on a man whose name I have just forgotten; it was interesting but maybe not the best color for him. Same thing in chartreuse and I think there would have been a bit of swooning.
Anne Laurie
@opiejeanne: Lil Nas X?
(Tried to embed an image, couldn’t do it.)
I think this was a excellent hat-tip to Nudies’ cowboy costumes, and hot pink because there was, IIRC, a vast controversy when LNX turned out to be not *just* the ‘wrong’ color for a country singer (Old Towne Road), but also gay, shock horror. (I suspect those bandanas around his wrists are another joke, but I don’t know enough about ‘the code’ to guess the reference.)
glory b
@David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch: She and her brother had a great interveiw with Howard Stern.
opiejeanne
@Anne Laurie: Aha< Thanks, yes it was Little Nas. I didn’t get the memo about the gayness. Oh, the horror of a black gay man singing a CW song. Makes me like it even more.
