President Trump and Vice President Pence just made an unannounced trip to the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington. They stood in front of it for approximately 30 seconds with their heads bowed before turning and leaving without making remarks.

Approximately an hour later:
Yeah, and then Trump tweeted that the person we actually should be celebrating on this day is…. Wait for it….

I’ve been avoiding the joint for a bit. Because, politics. But have some Penny. She’s doing great so far.

Also:
Declaration of Independence – July 4, 1776
Gettysburg Address – November 19, 1863
Letter from Birmingham Jail – April 16, 1963
As much as I’d like to think differently, I probably won’t be around to see 2060. So, the next good one on that list is probably up to one of your kids.
Jerzy Russian
The president and Vice President look so small standing next to Dr. King.
Sandia Blanca
When I first saw the video of IMPOTUS and VP standing there, it looked like they were taking a pee on the flowers! Ugh, that shows how little I expect from them in terms of civil behavior.
sab
@khead: What is that flooring she is on? My cats would kill and eat me to get their claws into that stuff.
sab
@Jerzy Russian: Dr King never looked so fierce in life. I know he was, but it came through as persistence, not fierceness. We know now how brave he was. I am glad his statue shows that.
khead
@sab:
Berber carpet. Once upon a time it was gonna be the pool table room. And you are right that cats love it.
Mnemosyne
I just found out today that there are ten statues of modern martyrs at Westminster Abbey in London, and Dr. King is one of them:

Ruckus
@sab:
I think the word you are looking for is resolute.
I don’t think Dr. King wanted to be fierce. I never got that vibe. I knew he’d never give up and would take pretty much anything thrown his way but I’d say resolute fits him much better.
Ruckus
@Mnemosyne:
Very interesting. Also reading about the other 9 people with statues. Esther John struck me as one of the most interesting. Both Dr. King and Esther John were born in 1929 and she was murdered 2 yrs after Dr. King. Both had to overcome a lot to be the people they ended up and were actually similar stories.

Fuck, I’ll be 65 in 2060. You know, if the consequences of climate change don’t kill me before then
mrmoshpotato
Sooooo Dump and Dense did the same thing they did last year or in 2017 or 2018? (I don’t remember what damn year it was, it’s been a long century.)
mrmoshpotato
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Young whippersnapper!
The Dangerman
@khead:
Me, neither, though I will try for 2061 because of Halley’s Comet. It’s last pass in 86 was all kinds of wrong (kinda like anticipating Christmas morning, then opening presents and getting only socks and underwear). 2061 HAS to be better.
Plus, by 2061, the Memorial for Trump will likely be finished (a stall at the spaceport with a flusher that works on the first attempt).
JWR
Remember that video from Puerto Rico (?) where Trump moves his water bottle, and Pence immediately mimics him? Watch the above video. At about the 20 second mark, Trump moves/folds his arms, followed 2 seconds later by Pence doing the exact same thing. Very weird pair, those two.

If ever there was a time for a giant statue to animate and go on a stompy rampage…

@mrmoshpotato: Ya don’t get to say that too often ’round these parts, do ya?
frosty
@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Same age as my younger son. I worry like hell about them. I tried my best but it’s like pissing into the wind to make things right.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@The Dangerman: Growing up, an old guy down the street saw the 1910 appearance, he said it was pretty spectacular. 1986 was a dud.
I blame Reagan.
Duane
@Joey Maloney: A statue isn’t going to come alive and seek revenge. However, natural conditions could cause it to fall over. An act of a truly caring God.
frosty
@Mary G: Wow.
mrmoshpotato
@?BillinGlendaleCA: No. :)
mrmoshpotato
LOL
Comrade Colette Collaboratrice
@The Dangerman: I’ll be a hundred when it comes back, and ever since the pale, wimpy disappointment of ’86 it’s been my goal to see it.
But yeah, climate change could put a crimp in that plan.
Amir Khalid
@Comrade Colette Collaboratrice:
I’ll be 101, and I’m not holding my breath.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Amir Khalid: If you hold your breath, you certainly won’t make it.
Joey Maloney
@Duane: I guess you’re not watching the same animes I’m watching.
Amir Khalid
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
That’s one of the reasons.
mrmoshpotato
@Amir Khalid: Also, you need more time to buy more guitars. :)
WaterGirl
@JWR: It’s part of how Pence stays in Trump’s good graces. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
They even teach that practice in communication seminars. What a disgusting pair.
