Elizabeth Warren Is Doing Something Right

by Cheryl Rofer|  November 14, 20194:01 pm| 118 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Tax Policy, Warren for President 2020

Facebook0Tweet0Email0

Here’s my first contribution from this side of things. Let’s see if it works.

So far today, two billionaires have become very upset.

NEW: Leon Cooperman has responded to Elizabeth Warren's ad. "She’s disgraceful. She doesn’t know who the f— she’s tweeting. I gave away more in the year then she has in her whole f—-ing lifetime” he just told me. https://t.co/8g6VEY3sVl

— Brian Schwartz (@schwartzbCNBC) November 13, 2019

Surprised to be featured in Sen Warren’s campaign ad, given the many severe critics she has out there. Not my candidate, but we align on many issues. Vilification of people as a member of a group may be good for her campaign, not the country. Maybe tribalism is just in her DNA.

— Lloyd Blankfein (@lloydblankfein) November 14, 2019

I took a screenshot of the Blankfein tweet because I figured that someone would tell him about the racism and he would take it down, but it’s been up for four hours now.

I guess this brings up the age-old question of whether being an asshole is in your DNA.

I volunteered for his reelection campaign for governor. He definitely would have been on my radar if he joined the race like months ago. Now…   As far as Warren, claims that she’s vilifying the wealthy are bunk. She asks the wealthy for more, yes, and she vilifies those who got/maintained their money by exploitation.      So that argument is clearly being perpetuated by exploitatative people and bad listeners.

I started reading a novel the other day and the main character was Native American, drove a Cherokee, and carried a Tribal pistol.  I didn’t give up until chapter 2 when it was reviewed that the tv in the safe house where the world savers took refuge was always tuned to fox “news”.  Deleted, with a one star rating on Amazon.

I don’t like the idea of you getting jumped on for your comment, but I feel most of the kneecapping is aimed at Bernie. Before the BJ move when I still couldn’t comment, I’d see endless references to anytime Warren was polling well somewhere, but crickets for similar strong showings for Bernie.

I’ve been banned since right around HRC’s loss, with more blocks that popped up whenever I was able to get back in after talking to JC. Bernie is regularly mocked here as “Wilmer” and “Shouty McFingerwag” and similar vitriol is directed at Tulsi for whatever reason. Occasionally I’ll see critiques of other candidates similar to my own views, but anything I might say is viewed through the lens of my previous and continued support for Bernie.

I find it somewhst ironic that Bernie’s platform was largely pilloried here, but if Warren champions it, it becomes a non-issue.

How many billionaires have announced this cycle?

When I googled it the other day, there were only ~600 US billionaires, so I feel like there’s a strong possibility we have 1% of US billionaires running for President.

I also wonder, what percent of US billionaires will run for President in their lifetime. 10%?

Al Gore never said he invented the internet either, but it stuck as a way for opponents to belittle him. I think that unfortunately, Warren is in a similar position with the Pocahontas dig. It was probably even a worse move to put forth the DNA test as being thought of as proof somehow of her contention. Some indigenous groups indicated that they found that in itself troubling.

I take her at her word that it was part of her family lore. My concern for her candidacy and my own lack of support for it is based on other more relevant factors. I have no doubt Trump would whip up his own base relentlessly with that taunt, nothingburger that it is.

And also Warren didn’t get beaten like a rented mule, having mathematically lost the nomination by May, yet still didn’t drop out and had the nerve to pout at the convention.

Additionally, if she doesn’t win the nomination, she won’t scream that the primary was rigged but will instead tell her supporters to back the nominee if they want anything close to what she was proposing, because they surely won’t get anything close to income equality with four more years of Dump.

As a Democrat, worry is my natural state. I think we will have a hard row to hoe trying to beat back the Evangelicals, white nationalists and anti feminists. I think the super rich are just fine with fascism. I love Warren’s multitude of plans, it tickles my inner wonk.

But I worry trying to openly take on all these moneyed bozos as well as surmounting the other troglodytes mentioned above will be too much. We cannot not win, too many people will continue to be badly hurt. I think this country needs someone like Warren but too many can be convinced to not vote for her.

Ugh, again, all we need is better voters. All!?!?!?

@LanceThruster:  Bernie honeymooned in the Soviet Union.  Republicans are going to beat up the Democratic candidate relentlessly for something regardless of who it is.  That is what they do.  It isn’t specific to Warren.

Also, they will find something better than the tribal controversy.  Nobody actually cares about it.

Additionally, if she doesn’t win the nomination, she won’t scream that the primary was rigged but will instead tell her supporters to back the nominee if they want anything close to what she was proposing, because they surely won’t get anything close to income equality with four more years of Dump.

Now that’s just crazy talk! She’ll take the rest of the year decade off to pout and tweet naughty things.

      Ooh, strikethough button back. Yay!

Somehow I don’t believe that Blankfein was even aware that he was making a snide reference to Elizabeth Warren’s indigenous background. Rich white privileged assholes like him are usually incredibly self-unaware. Look at Trump. Warren is the only Dem candidate that makes sense from a holistic point of view.

But that’s water under the bridge. Bernie’s been quite the juggernaut this go round with some powerful endorsements early. It kills the DNC that AOC knocked off Crowley, who was next in line for Pelosi’s speakership. He’s also polling quite well, and that’s with a dearth of coverage. His rallies are record breaking. Those of the rest… not so much.

Cooperman: “As far as the accusations of insider trading, I won the case. She’s disgraceful.”
Reality: “Hedge fund manager Leon G. Cooperman and his firm Omega Advisors have agreed to settle insider trading charges and beneficial ownership reporting violations by paying nearly $5 million and subjecting themselves to onsite monitoring by an independent compliance consultant with access to their electronic communications and trading records.

The settlement, subject to court approval, would conclude litigation that included a significant ruling in favor of the SEC after the agency filed its complaint against Cooperman and Omega in September 2016.

      Monetary Sanctions
Cooperman and Omega agreed to pay:

$1,759,049 in disgorgement of ill-gotten gains
      $429,041in pre-judgment interest
$1,759,049 in penalty for the insider trading violation
$1,000,000 penalty for the beneficial ownership reporting violations (ordered as to Cooperman only)

      Independent Consultant
To guard against insider trading, Cooperman and Omega must retain an onsite independent compliance consultant until 2022 (unless Omega Advisors ceases to be a registered investment adviser prior to that date).”

Amy McGrath 25 and Sara Gideon 25 because I think they have a decent shot at winning senate seats against truly evil opponents and I think at this point my dough would be wasted on presidential or house candidates. So who would be good to spend my final 25 on in the senate?

@Mnemosyne: I hate to tell you this but in the last 2 days the Washington Post published an interview where she says she is getting a lot of pressure to run again. She also said she wasn’t but then hedged saying she would never say never. Another source said Bill said something in August. There is also a BBC interview a few days ago with the same kind of thing. Google Hillary interview and you’ll find reputable links.
that said, WaPo pointed out filling deadlines are already closing so the odds are against her. She also said she didn’t intend to endorse in the primary, but support strongly our candidate.
She has a history of saying she would never say never before other try’s and didn’t end up trying. It’s part of her personal guidelines.

This piece is a bit raw. Can’t say I disagree about the support for authoritarians, though. Her love for India’s massacre-complicit Modi is just as disqualifying as her apologetics for Bashar Assad (Shrenik Rao, Oct 19, 2019)

Steve Bannon “loves Tulsi Gabbard.” He thinks she “gets the foreign policy stuff, the Islamic terrorism stuff.” Tucker Carlson loves her Assad-as-genocidaire skepticism, David Duke loves how she’s realigning U.S. politics, and Richard Spencer lauds her “bravery” in the diplomatic field. Her own aunt, Caroline Sinavaiana Gabbard, has noted her discomfort with this mixed bag of endorsements, in low-key language: Gabbard “has a notably mixed voting record, and associations that veer from certain progressive causes to the apparent courting of strongmen such as Narendra Modi, Bashar al-Assad, and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi (not to mention Trump) – this zigzagging path through positions is vexing.”

Kudos on how the pie filter works. Now, to see a random image or a random quote in case of pie? *ponders*

The point was that the murmers were coming from her. I think she sees the writing on the wall, but I was curious if it actually happened would she still have the people who touted her qualifications so emphatically in 2016 on board again. I’ve seen the phrase “Hillary was right about everything!” more than a few times in here. It’s not a completely implausible hypothetical.

Excellent opportunity to try out the new pie filter. I’m happy to announce Lance Thruster as my first ever pie filteree, regardless of it’s disdain for such pronouncements. Long live pie!

I hate to tell you this but in the last 2 days the Washington Post published an interview where she says she is getting a lot of pressure to run again.

Yeah… Hillary Clinton isn’t running in 2020 and I wouldn’t read too much into a comment like that. Because she does get a lot of pressure to run again – from every reporter she ever sits down at an interview with, and I’m sure she has lots of fans in the audience when she give talks who would love for her to do it. Telling them that “No, I’m not going to run for president this year” would invite the question “What about 2024?!” Telling them that “No, I’m not running for president.” Invites the doubtful reaction “Really…..?” So she throws out a non-commital “never say never” and lets the listener fill in whatever blanks they prefer. But whatever you think of her, she’s pragmatic, and if she were going to run this year she would have announced about the same time Biden did.

Suffice it to say that she probably thinks a lot about what the world would look like if she had been able to make the choices that Trump made instead, and she undoubtedly thinks it would look a whole lot better than it does in our reality.

I have already had to skim over most of this thread because of this individual, was on the verge of using the pie filter last incarnation when he mercifully disappeared. If you need to make this happen again I will send you a loaf of my Bayrisher Nuss Stollen when the holiday baking happens, as a thank you.

I find it somewhst ironic that Bernie’s platform was largely pilloried here, but if Warren champions it, it becomes a non-issue

If it makes you feel better, I detest Bernie and don’t think much of Warren’s plans that echo Sanders.

A bit late to the “will Hillary run again” party, but as for why she frequently says “never say never”, I think this has largely to do with the fact that it gets under Trump’s skin, and she knows it! And more power to her for doing so! ;)
