The developers are terrific. They worked 12 hours yesterday getting the site rolled out.
Some issues are already fixed, and others are being worked on as we speak.
FIXED
- Media Library problems for front-pagers
- On the Road couldn’t find images because of the Medial Library issue.
- Email addresses not being saved.
- URL not being saved.
BELIEVED TO BE FIXED, BUT WE NEED CONFIRMATION FROM YOU GUYS
- Reply box sometimes not showing @commenter
IS THIS STILL AN ISSUE?
- new comment sometimes doesn’t show up until you manually refresh
WORKING ON THESE
- “you have been blocked!” when trying to embed a tweet
Please consider the following as if it were in ALL CAPS, BOLD and BRIGHT RED. Oh, and FLASHING!
If you are having issues and want them to be worked on, please provide device specifics: hardware, operating system, browser

Yep. Still an issue.

Also, for anyone who is concerned about white space. Check out comments 5, 7, 8 ,and 10.
Compare that to my comments at 11 and 12.
5, 7, 8, and 10 all have at least one extra unnecessary return at the end of the post.

@WaterGirl: So they took out the automatic non-breaking space at bottom of the reply?
(Checked in text mode, they didn’t. I think it would be more useful to get rid of the auto non-breaking space there. Also add a space(not carriage return) after the nym in a reply. )

Okay, we can stop testing @reply for now. It seems better, but not FIXED.
How about items 1-4 under FIXED up top? Can you all confirm that 1-4 are fixed for you?

Interesting…new comment had to be refreshed this time (hadn’t previously) and also can’t be edited even though I just submitted it. Fine, I didn’t want to edit it anyway. Adding a whole new comment is much better. …
Enough refreshing and I get edit options back. I’m going to quit complaining though. I like it in general and you’re getting enough other people commenting repeatedly with same errors.

Is there a Help page or a “here’s how to use the new stuff” thread?
In a recent comment I successfully blocked text for Quote. But I could not figure out how to continue with new non-quoted text. I figured out how to use the VISUAL selection. Not sure what the TEXT selection does. Clicked it and it did not seem to make any difference. No options appeared. Using Firefox on Windows desktop.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: If you see an issue, make a note of whether you were in visual or text mode. I have a feeling that text mode may be a culprit.
Visual mode is where 99% of the people should be all the time. You only want text mode if want to enter your raw html code, or you are embedding a (pared down) tweet, or you need to fix a block quote or something. Otherwise, Visual mode is the place to be.
PJ
@WaterGirl: Your nym didn’t come up in the reply until I clicked the “x” and clicked “reply” again.
“Visual” mode seems to be the default for replying. What is the difference between visual and text modes (besides the obvious one of having all of the buttons to affect text in visual mode, and none in text mode)? Why not just have one mode?
Baud
@WaterGirl:
Mostly visual.

@PJ: Text mode shows raw html tags, basically. If you want to see exactly what is there or do something that’s unsupported by the buttons in visual mode, go to Text Mode.
WaterGirl
Is anyone seeing that your FIRST reply in a thread doesn’t show up with @commenter, but that subsequent replies do?
FlyingToaster
@WaterGirl: Okay, “reply” the first time on a page doesn’t include the “@”; if you hit “reply” a second (or third, or nth) time, it includes “@”, and all of the previous “@”. Weird.
For a straight comment, and not reply, the comment box defaults to Text mode; I have to manually click it to get to visual.
For replies, the popup defaults to Visual mode.
And I’ve emailed you the L/R button overlaying content screenshot from my iPad this am.
Like you don’t have enough on your plate.
PJ
@WaterGirl: When I post comments, the site usually, but not always, sends me to the top of the page and I have to refresh to see the comment.
Firefox 70.0.1, MacOS 10.13.1, MacBook Pro
An unrelated complaint: in iOS on an iPhone, the down arrow takes you to the very bottom of the page, which has a bunch of tweets from Cole. I would much rather if the down arrow functioned as it does in MacOS, where it takes you to the bottom of the comments, so that if you are returning to a post you can go directly to what’s “new”. I don’t need to see Cole’s tweets. Put those somewhere else (or nowhere, honestly).
MisterForkbeard
@WaterGirl: @Baud: I think we got that already, didn’t we? Ruemara’s posting now. :)
Okay, aside from scrolling and flashing text, what do we need? Additional support for animated gifs? :)
I mostly kid, but we added a giphy integration to our slack setup at work, and it’s insane how much it’s used. You just type /giphy <subject> and it trawls the giphy database for a random gif tagged to that subject. You click through until you find the one you want.
There are definite times when “/giphy facepalm” is super useful. :)
WaterGirl
@PJ: Please allow me to refer you to the Sunday thread a couple of months ago where a dozen people made it very clear that Text mode is very important to them. Some of it was just “because I want to enter my own HTML” but a few of the reasons were compelling, so we added Text mode. Like I said, except for embedding a tweet, 99% of the people here will never need or want Text mode.
?BillinGlendaleCA

@Baud: Good luck with that.
MisterForkbeard
@WaterGirl: Yes, but those people are WRONG, aren’t they? :)
@PJ: Agree about the down arrow thing. It would be nice if it takes you to the end of the comments instead of to John’s latest tweets, which are also on the right of the page and easy to find just by staying at the top of the page.
Small usability improvements. This has to be a huge pain for Watergirl, but it’s nice for me to be on the requester side of things for once. :)

@?BillinGlendaleCA: This is why I’m seen as a trouble maker. A loner Dottie, a rebel! :)
More precisely, this happens every time you leave or revisit the page. The reply button won’t work properly for me the first time, and then it does. But if I go back to the main page and then back to this thread, then the reply button has the issue again until I use it for the second time.
On a complete other note, when I get a new thread I want to hijack it to talk about some job-related stuff. We haven’t had a “jobs thread” in a while… maybe it’s time for that.
Another Scott
@WaterGirl: (Had to hit Reply button twice to get the @.)
I usually just start typing in the comment box, and since it defaults to Visual, that’s what I use. It would be very nice if we didn’t have to think about what tab we were on, or if it defaulted to what we last used.
(Now on Text mode in the editor.)
Well?
Latest Chrome on Win10.
[eta] The white space between paragraphs in the Visual tab seems to be huge (nbsp with about 2 lines, nbsp with about 2 empty lines, etc.). It seems tiny in the Text editor – I guess having the freedom to make it what we want is good, but it would be nice if it defaulted to a single line between paragraphs.
Cheers,
Scott.
Mnemosyne
I just experienced this in the thread below, so it’s not quite fixed.
Also, I can’t figure out how to use the formatting buttons so I can type something under a blockquote, so I’m coding those by hand still.

@?BillinGlendaleCA:
OK. This works. I was afraid that pressing Enter would just move the quoted area down.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@WaterGirl: Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.
About item #2, that’s referring to the OTR posts, not the form, correct?
?BillinGlendaleCA
If you hit enter once, it puts a line-feed in the blockquote, twice it exits the blockquote and becomes a regular paragraph.

@WaterGirl: Nope, never was (willingly) in text mode. But it’s likely that something in my Firefox browser settings defaults to text on my Mac (this is the locked down version for work, which I should be doing).

now trying a blockquote:
It looks like you have to hit enter twice at the end of the quote to get out of blockquote mode.

NOT fixed. In a new thread, this never works for me on the 1st try to reply. Always works on the 2nd try. (Chrome, Win 10, HP Laptop)
Another Scott
@Mnemosyne: The only thing that I figured out about blockquotes with buttons is to make sure there is an empty line below the text you want to quote before selecting it and hitting the blockquote button. That seemed to work. But it’s, er, different from what I’m used to.

@Mnemosyne: Can’t test that here, I have no i-devices.

@Another Scott: This is similar to how Outlook365 works. If you put in a table, picture, or other large non-text element sometimes you need to have pre-planned and had a newline waiting for you below your big new fancy table… or you can’t type there.
Probably a common issue with web editors.

Typed some more text.
Each line was a short paragraph.

@MisterForkbeard: @PJ: On a computer – or on a tablet in landscape mode – the right-hand side stuff is, well, on the right-hand side! But on a phone or on a tablet in portrait mode, the “right-hand side” stuff like john’s tweets are at the bottom. Because there is no right-hand side on a phone or a tablet in portrait mode.

I am back to having to click twice to get the nym to appear when I reply to a commenter.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@WaterGirl: We really need a space(regular space not a line feed) after the reply nym in replies. It’s not a problem when you’re just typing a reply, it becomes a problem if you’re inserting a blockquote at the beginning of a reply(I often do that).
Right now we have:
[nym of commenter being replied to]:(reply)(then a non-breaking space)
What we should have:
[nym of commenter being replied to]: (reply)

@Gin & Tonic: I just saw this,
but I am 99.9% certain that the images are in your On the Road post now that the Media Library knows the proper location.All the other On the Road posts had their pictures show up once we solved the Media Library problem. I was notified of your On the Road post when you submitted it, but when I click my super-secret link from that email so I can preview your post I get a 404 error. My best guess is that you used cyrillic and it ended up in spam somehow? Off to check.
edit: you were not in Spam.
edit 2: i cannot find you in the private pending posts where on the road should be. i have contacted the developers to see what might have happened. was there cyrillic in there?
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Gin & Tonic: That’s in line with my question on whether #2 refers to OTR posts or submissions.
HumboldtBlue
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
and now it works again.
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl: What that means is that on a phone, hitting the quick-nav down arrow will take you to the bottom of all that useless crap as opposed to taking you to the last comment (note my implicit ranking of comments as not “useless crap”) meaning that you have to then scroll back up to get to where you want to be.
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl: Thanks.
JWR
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Woo hoo! Ain’t all this just too much fun?
I’m also missing the @nym in the Reply box. Again! (Double clutching to make it appear. Too much work!)
?BillinGlendaleCA
@WaterGirl: I think what is confusing, partially in line with your item #2, is that the OTR form used to show the picture in the form, once you selected it; it no longer does that, just the file name. I guess the picture showing kind of gave the submitter confirmation that it was aware(in a visual sense) that the form had grabbed the picture(it also let you know you had the right picture you were writing about in the comments below the picture).

Double spacing didn’t work. No editing time bubble was offered. And no editing tools, period. (Was going to put “speaker phone”, about Sondland possibly using one, in color.)

Is anyone seeing that your FIRST reply in a thread doesn’t show up with @commenter, but that subsequent replies do? Yes, this is happening for me. If I reply on another thread and come back to this thread, again I have no @nym on my first reply attempt. If I close the Leave a Comment pop up and hit reply again, the pop up opens with @nym in blue upper left in comment box. Also, a mysterious letter “P” appears in the lower left field of my Leave a Comment box after any second attempt at replying. On any fresh thread first attempt at replying, there is no letter at lower box left and no @nym. My specs are at comment #28 in this thread.

@WaterGirl: I know this is likely another pain in the ass, but is it possible to get a “down” button for phones that takes us to the bottom of the comments instead of the bottom of the page (with the tweets).

So a reply in one thread is great, but I think you don’t get @person on the first reply in a thread. Even if you have been in other threads.
If someone can tell me that doesn’t happen for them, please speak up.
WaterGirl
@JWR: It would be utter chaos if we were all posting in our own time zones. Comments would be out of order and all mixed up. Chaos. You know, as opposed to the order we always experience here. :-)
WaterGirl
@PJ: I have only seen this for one other person, and he was using private mode. If you are in private mode or are not able to accept cookies, your nym will not be permanent. Do either of those things resemble your situation?
JWR
@WaterGirl: Ah, gotcha. (I hadn’t thought of that.)
waysel
@WaterGirl: I went to some Twitter pages on my laptop and upon my return to BJ-which was left open- I again had to double Reply to make this comment include your nym. Just another clue, maybe.
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl: Late replying, but no, all text in my OTR post from last night was Roman.
NotMax
Here’s a thing have noticed:
If I’m on the comment page for what is at that moment the newest front page post (i.e., no right side tab showing) and make comments, after clicking the Post Comment button am taken to where I was on the page prior to making the comment, EXCEPT if a new front page post has subsequently been put up. In that case, the right side tab is (now correctly) showing but I am bounced to the top of the page after clicking the Post Comment button. It seems the addition of the right side tab (because a new front page post has occurred) is somehow resetting the entirety of the comment page.
Win 10, Firefox.

@WaterGirl:
Will have to be this evening.
satby
@Baud: I actually agree with this.
Visual mode was and should be the default.
We invented computers to automate things, so use the automatic html buttons.
satby
@WaterGirl: it’s not thread specific for me, when I reply to someone now it just does @commenter as expected.
you should all get Kindles, they just work.
PJ
@WaterGirl: Private mode would be the culprit. I can live with having to reenter my info every so often if I can avoid being tracked all over the internet.
Villago Delenda Est
Needing to refresh to see your edited comment, but that seems to be not an issue now.
PJ
@WaterGirl: Thank you for that tip (I never would have figured it out on my own).
DaddyJ
Congratulations JC and all the folks who worked so hard on the rollout!
My one quibble is the sad state of the balloon-man-avatar.png image. It could really stand to be redrawn and saved to PNG at maybe 200% or 300% its display size, then scaled down in the brower via CSS. Or maybe converted to SVG so that resolution is not an issue.
I’m a web developer by trade, and as a long-time BJ reader, I would happily volunteer to redo the image. Unfortunately, what’s up there now is so murky I couldn’t redraw it very accurately. I’d need a large original where one can see the line work (if it exists), or permission to redraw the art freehand.
Ohio Mom
I have an iPhone, what operating system is that, I don’t know.
I can post new comments just fine. I get a thrill every time I see my nym and email sitting there, waiting for me. BUT I can not reply to other people’s comments easily at all.
The @otherperson doesn’t show up, AND more critically, I can not see what I am typing.
The visible comment box ends underneath where the words I am typing would be appearing. I can post it and then edit it, which is sorely needed since I can’t correct typos as I go along because I can’t see what I am typing. I hope what I am saying makes sense.
Thanks!

@PJ
Reminded me to mention that the out of testing release version of the Brave browser has officially rolled out. It includes two different privacy modes: Private Window and also Private Window with Tor.
Comrade Colette Collaboratrice
@WaterGirl: Nope, for me, the @nym does not appear the first time I hit Reply each time I reply, in this same thread – in fact, on this very reply!
Thanks a million for all the hard work you and the rest of the team have put in. The site looks great.
WaterGirl
@DaddyJ: Yes that’s the same process we went through. No, we don’t have the original. Yes, it’s a bit murky, but paying for someone to re-do the art would have been pricey, so it wasn’t an option. If you have any further thoughts, feel free to email me at my nym at balloon-juice.com thanks!
Ohio Mom
@Ohio Mom: b
WaterGirl
@Comrade Colette Collaboratrice: If I understood you correctly, you are agreeing with my theory, and your “nope” was a no, i cannot tell you that i found an instance that didn’t match your theory. Yes? (I’m a bit tired, for some reason, so I may be slow on the uptake.)
WaterGirl
@Ohio Mom: I mostly get what you are saying. :-) If you could copy that and submit the information thru Site Feedback: Report a Problem, that would be most helpful. And if you can get a screen capture on your iPhone and send it to me at watergirl at balloon-juice.com in addition to entering using the site feedback form, that would be even better. A picture is worth a thousand words!
Ohio Mom
@Ohio Mom: I tried replying to myself. I saw the @Ohio Mom so scrtach that complaint. But nothing I typed showed up. And right now the comment box is missing and I’m typing blind.
WaterGirl
@satby
hahahahaha
WaterGirl
@NotMax: That’s super useful information. It would help a ton if you could enter that under Site Feedback: Report a problem.
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: Roman, as in not English?
WaterGirl
@waysel: Perhaps going away and coming back = first comment on a thread. Even if it technically isn’t.
WaterGirl
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Yeah, I asked about that a few months ago. The answer from the developers was that this was a custom designed form for us, at no extra cost, and if we were going to make changes like that, it would need to be a separate contact. So if this is super important to people and they want to raise some funds for it, I imagine we could talk with the developers.
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: Got it! The COMMENT button in the white bar that always stays at the top will take you exactly where you want to go – to the bottom of the last comment.
Just Chuck
Love the new look of the site. So where are the voting buttons and threaded comments we were promised?
WaterGirl
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Bill, your On the Road submission was perfect – all the images showed up as soon as we fixed the default directory problem with the Media library.
WaterGirl
@?BillinGlendaleCA: You said:
Yes, we had a space there before, and it has disappeared, and I don’t want to bug them about a small thing like that when they have so much on their plate, but I’m sure we can bring the space back once things have settled down.
WaterGirl
@JWR: I am glad to know that! The developer spent a full day on those changes, at no extra charge. So it was out of their hide, so to speak, and greatly appreciated by me.
WaterGirl
@MisterForkbeard:
@Another Scott: MisterForbeard saved me the trouble. Yes, this is a common issue in computing and on the internet, but not an issue with the particular programming here.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@WaterGirl: Understood, it’s just a downgrade from the previous form.
@WaterGirl: My images are always perfect! //
Glad the form went though ok.
@WaterGirl: Yeah, not a high priority.
Percysowner
Not getting @commentator in Reply. Waterfox (Firefox fork) 2019.10 Mac 10.14.6
WaterGirl
@PJ: Have you tried going full screen in your browser? Then you can do Command-minus to make the print smaller, and the fly-outs don’t cover anything.
WaterGirl
@Percysowner: Every time or just the first time in a thread?
PJ
@WaterGirl: Thanks, that works (though I have a small laptop so making the print smaller makes it a little harder to read, but not a huge problem), but I still don’t get why we need two sets of buttons to do the same thing.
JaySinWA
It depends on screen width, if you make your viewing window narrow enough (where enough isn’t clearly defined for me) the sidebar stuff goes to the bottom on a computer. ChromeOS.
ET
I am not seeing embedded tweets in Firefox the same way as I do on my phone, Chrome, and Explorer. Is there something I need to do?
karen marie
@NotMax: Hahaha – I have no idea what you’re talking about.
NotMax
@karen marie
Story of my life.

@WaterGirl: No fair! How come Billin’s is good and mine went to the bit bucket?
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl:
This is the Roman alphabet.

JaySinWA
@PJ: You can also make the window narrow enough and the wing flyouts go away. No need to make the font smaller but you may have to make it narrow enough that the paragraphs get reformatted and have less text on a screen.
ETA My Chomebook 14 loses them at half screen, when I pull the window to the edge of the screen for dual app window mode.
Percysowner
I tried replying to a reply to me that replied to someone else and still not @commentator, so it looks like everytime.
And my reply to you didn’t @ either, although I don’t know if this counts as second time.
WaterGirl
@PJ:
Why? Because a lot of people LOVE the fly-outs, and you don’t take away stuff people care about unless there’s a darn good reason. The fly-outs could be hidden on tablets but there would need to be an outcry in that direction for that to happen. They are not on the sides on phones, so they are not interfering with horizontal screen space.
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: So yes, English. If you did anything edgy in your OTR submission, maybe don’t try that again until we get a simple one through for you. :-) I don’t think it should be the “&” but you never know. Bill’s paw prints made it through on his OTR.
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: What we’re trying for with your new test tonight is to see if it goes through. It’s POSSIBLE that since I didn’t check for over a day… that someone accidentally deleted yours after you submitted it. That’s what we’ll find out.
WaterGirl
@ET: Embedded tweets are not working at this point. On the list to be fixed. But if you’re not seeing them in Firefox, my guess is that you have something set in firefox that hides social media, or at least doesn’t format them nicely. I made that suggestion to someone, maybe debbie? during testing checked and found that was her problem with tweets in firefox.
WaterGirl
@JaySinWA: Why would you make your viewing window skinny on a tablet when you can just turn it and get portrait mode?
Comrade Colette Collaboratrice
@WaterGirl: Sorry, I might not have read your question correctly. So, here’s what happens: When I hit the Reply button, the window that opens the first time does not show the @nym – it’s just blank. I then close the window, hit Reply again, and @nym appears in the new, second-attempt window. This happens each time I reply to a comment in a thread, whether or not I have previously replied to a comment in that thread. It happened again when I replied to this very comment. And it happened consistently in other threads.
Chrome, Windows 10 Enterprise (yeah, I’m at work).
I hope that helps. I really appreciate all the work that is going into making the new site run – it”s already much better than the old one.
PJ
@WaterGirl: You learn something new every day – one person’s superfluous aggravation is another person’s clung-to necessity. (That also explains Facebook.)
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl: OK, I submitted a one-photo, all-English OTR post.
Another Scott
@WaterGirl: There’s a potentially larger one in the first capture of the site at Archive.org:
https://web.archive.org/web/20030127091907/http://www.balloon-juice.com:80/
It’s still pixelated, though.
HTH.
Cheers,
Scott.
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: It came through perfectly! One image with a lot of blue, and Test Post. So someone must have accidentally trashed your other one by accident yesterday – or else you did some tricky language or something edgy?
something fabulous
testing testing 123 as mentioned!
something fabulous
@WaterGirl: aha!
something fabulous
brand new comment! edited! in dread colors!!!
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl: If you knew me IRL you’d understand the preposterousness of your implication I might have done something “edgy.”
Yesterday’s post was 100% in the Queen’s English, and included like 5-6 photos with less than a sentence about each. About as vanilla as possible. Now I’m going to have to remember which photos and what I said about them.
Gin & Tonic
@WaterGirl: I just posted something vaguely resembling last night’s OTR post. I will wait nervously to see what happens with it.
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: I believe I replied in the other thread, but just in case… I not only received your test submission to On the Road – I also received your gorgeous submission of something like 6 photos in your “real” submission. Success!
gaucho
Glad you all have put together the update–I’ve seen my wife go through similar rebuilds for her business and it’s not easy.
One thing I noticed is that my RSS feed (using the web version of Feedly and a Chrome browser or the iOS app) doesn’t communicate the author of the post beyond “Balloon Juice.” Under the previous build it did. Minor issue, but would be great to have that the way it was if it’s feasible.
