Shooter at Saugus HS. Several injured. LASD resources on site and searching for suspect. Will be locking down area schools. Advise residents to shelter in place and report any suspicious activity
— Undersheriff Tim Murakami (@LASDMurakami) November 14, 2019
There’s been another school shooting. This time at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, CA. The LA County Sheriffs Office is currently reporting 3 wounded dead. The other schools in the area are on lockdown as the shooter is still at large.

This is still a very active situation. Reports of approximately 5 victims being treated. Parents, deputies are on scene everywhere protecting your children.

.@LASDHQ tells us weapon was recovered. Unclear if shooter had any other weapons. Anyone near Saugus High School is told to lock doors, call 911 if you see someone suspicious #saugus #schoolshooting https://t.co/Y0c4z1I9Sa

And MSNBC’s Pete Williams has just reported is that law enforcement authorities have informed reporters that the suspect has been found and is no longer a threat, but he is unclear what “no longer a threat” means. And while there are five wounded, there are no fatalities, so that’s a revision.

Goddammit. This is a sick country.

I don’t have anything to say about this sad and infuriating event, except that is sad and infuriating.
I am commenting to say My Nym and Email Appeared Magically! Just as I was promised by Watergirl they would!
gvg
Ironically(?) maybe, yesterday when I was checking multiple mainstream new sites, I saw a headline that there was a school shooting in Russia. I did not take the time to click through.
Villago Delenda Est
Welcome, once again, to the United States of Ammosexuals.
exlitigator
I am a teacher, reading this in a classroom, and my first response was “only 3 dead? That’s not so bad.” Ugh. Fuck the NRA, the GOP, and any parent of a teenager who keeps guns in their home.
Villago Delenda Est
@Ohio Mom: The proof will be in the pudding of when I open up a tab into another thread and my Nym and Email magically appear there, forever!
Adam L Silverman
@gvg: Which is rare, given Russian firearms laws.

Fuck Moscow Mitch for refusing to bring up all the House bills. Even if it wouldn’t have prevented this one, I hate seeing these kids go through this, knowing nothing is being done to prevent it.

This country is exhausting.
Ella in New Mexico
God damn it. So sick of this shit.
BTW, I think the site is really awesome. Any future complaints will be made in the spirit of simply helping it be even better. Thanks to Watergirl and all of you who pulled this off.
Adam L Silverman
@exlitigator: The good news is that as per the update up top, they’ve revised that information. Five wounded, no fatalities. I’d embed the tweet, but that’s not working right now.
PenandKey
I hate admitting it, but having lived through the era of school shootings starting from Columbine to today I’ve almost grown numb from it. They still make me mad as hell, but until and unless the ammosexuals lose power I don’t see anything changing but the total body count. I’m glad to see that there’s been an update of no fatalities this time, so at least there’s that little bit of silver lining here.

What everybody said. Especially that “coulda been worse” feeling, which can eff off and die in a conflagration of a thousand thousand suns.
If furry creatures are unavailable, I substitute a good dose of Animal Planet, on which this morning we’ve seen whale sharks, penguin babies, otters, and now the live Give a Dog a Home show, which is as it says on the tin, plus cats. Cuddles and comfort for all.
IE is, shall we say, a bit perturbed by the new site.
Martin
Good to see they had a nurse on duty. That’s a bit iffy right now in a lot of CA schools. My wife sometimes doubles as the nurse when she subs at her elementary school, and she’s not a nurse – just has first aid/cpr/cert training.

@TomatoQueen: From the testing period I can tell you that IE is not a very good fit. If at all possible, use a different browser.

This is actually not a norm that is being broken by Mitch.
If there is no chance the president will sign it, the senate
controlled by the president’s party will not even bring the bill up for a vote. Same thing happened from 2013-2015 when Democrats still held the senate. And the GOP loons held the House.
Zinsky
When will we pass sensible gun control legislation??
Martin
Adam might be able to speak to this as a broader phenomena with more of an academic view (you know, data and theory and shit), but even though a lot of people might be taking a breath that nobody died, every school – certainly every school in local news range is having a collective pucker, reviewing active shooter procedures, reviewing access policies, scheduling new active shooter drills, and all that right now.
We may not call this an act of terror, but it has some of the same sort of economic and social fabric effect as an act of terror. Over the next 4 years I’m going to read applications from the kids at that school describing the event and the effect it had on them, on their grades, on their mental health, as will other staff on other campuses. I read one file from a student at Marjorie Douglas last year who described hiding in their classroom, then walking out of the school hands on head, not knowing what the fuck was happening, which of their friends might have been dead, which of their friends might have done this. My wife read another. There’s around 2500 students at Saugus High School. So maybe 5 or 7 or whatever students/staff shot but 2500 affected. We’ll be reminded of the echos of this for a few more years. We’ll take whatever desperate and/or misguided steps to prevent this from happening here. But it always feels like we’re pushing water uphill with only our hands. It kind of looks like we’re doing something, but we know it’s mostly futile.

so should an edit bar be available for my recent comments? Not seeing it

Hm, I think SCV Sheriff missed a comma here:
Or maybe the suspect really did look outstanding in his black clothing.

@Gin & Tonic: It’s probably more accurate to say that IE should be replaced with a more modern browser like Chrome or Firefox in general. Support for it is largely abandoned.
Mike in NC
When I first read ‘Saugus’ I assumed it was the town north of Boston.
Martin
CA is continuing to do that. Unfortunately, that can be bypassed simply by driving to NV or AZ.
JWR
@Martin: It’s been years since I used IE. I don’t care much for Chrome, (just little things, like the way it stores bookmarks), so Firefox is my browser of choice. But I was a bit upset when they discontinued RSS support, It was so elegantly simple.

I also assumed it was Saugus, MA. Whenever I go to Logan Airport, the bus takes me past that school, which is adjacent to Route 1.
Good to hear that there were no fatalities, but things have gotten to the point where school shootings aren’t always news anymore
ETA: This was a reply to Mike in NC at comment 29. I’ve mostly been lurking (maybe a couple of comments here and there), so mostly thumbs up on the new site, but still a few glitches to be dealt with.

Sigh, bracing for the inevitable “When I gave my dumb ass, idiot teenage, easily upset son a gun, I never knew he would go and use it” story.
It would also be nice if they could get to these people before they go berserk so no one gets hurt. Mental health reform too please.

Yes. This is exactly how I feel, along with low level fear for my high school age son.
ETA: that was supposed to be a response to Laura, so the reply feature is a little wonky.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Martin: Some employers only use IE, IIRC the federal government is one of them.
Brachiator
Waking up to a late morning. I hate this stuff. I think a good number of law enforcement and fire fighting folk live in the area. But sadly, this does not increase safety. I guess this is still a breaking news story. From ABC minutes ago. The person responsible still seems to be at large.
trollhattan
Damn. Hope, hope, hope the wounded all recover. Damn.
mrmoshpotato
@JWR: Also, “outstanding?” Really? “Still at-large”, “currently uncaptured”, etc?
Barbara
I was trying to reply to Laura and that didn’t show, and updating didn’t get saved.
The Moar You Know
“Wounded” does not mean these kids will just pick it up and be back playing soccer next week. Getting a wound from a modern firearm usually means you’re crippled in some fashion for the rest of your life.
Friend of mine teaches near there, guess I get to wait and find out if he is OK.
This nation’s approach to dealing with firearms is insane. Literally. A crazy person deals with a problem in the same way our politicians do.

Wasn’t the question in “A Few Good Men”: If everything you did was aboveboard, why did you alter the flight manifests?

True enough, even though I think even Microsoft would prefer that people move on to Edge.
At work, I’ve had to use IE for some specific activities, but use other browsers for work related research, for Balloon Juice, etc. I have jumped between Chrome and Firefox, depending on which was faster, new features, etc. IE has never been my general purpose browser.

@Martin: No academics required. Usually for something to be terrorism, there has to be, if not a political/ideological motivation, then a desired political/ideological outcome as a result of the act. For instance, we have religious terrorists who are proceeding from a theological (doctrinal) and/or dogmatic motivation, but the desired result is the enactment of the political change they espouse in line with their theology and doctrine as a result of the act of terrorism.
Terror, as a term, has technically referred to acts committed by a nation-state against their own, or parts of their own, citizenry/population in order to achieve conforming behavior. This is really closely tied to the original Le Terror of revolutionary France. Since I started studying terrorism, as well as other forms of low intensity warfare, in the early 90s, this term and usage has fallen away and terrorism gets used for both state and non-state actors.
What I think you’re referring to is often identified in state criminal codes as terrorizing. Basically, criminal activity intended to frighten victims into behaving a certain way.
Cermet
First, glad no one died! Hope the injured either have minor wounds or recover fully/quickly! Went through a similar but no injury incident with one of my daughters at school and it was very unnerving. So, I understand what these poor parents suffered until they learned that their children were ok. Very sadden for the parents that have children suffering gunshot wounds. Just terrible.
Adam L Silverman
@trollhattan: Given the limited number of casualties, I’d guess he only had a handgun. If this is the case, the odds of survival go way up.

That Santa Clarita area has suffered so much lately from the recent fires. This tragedy just adds to the grief. Those poor students and parents. Sickening.

This is me talking out of my ass, but given his age and (reported) ethnicity, I would guess that he needed mental health care and his family was in denial. But, you know, the people (Democrats) who want to enact common-sense gun laws including Red flag laws are NAZIS!!!!! I refuse to accept that such a small percentage of the population can be allowed to hold a death grip (all too literally) on everyone else’s rights to live sane lives.
But, my nym and email address are here by golly. very cool. Mac mini Catalina, Safari 13.0.2
Question for someone, anyone: I always just leave the thread open and open another window while waiting for a comment to load (or go get coffee, pet the cats etc.) because I’d lost comments in the past. This method is rather a pain in the butt, however. Is there another way to do it? Gotta run to work for now. Thanks and big hugs to Watergirl, Cole and everyone for the amazing work.

My eldest son escaped the Oregon District shooting. I have been dreading the next shooting because I know they are inevitable. I know this terrible news will cause flashbacks for anyone who is a survivor and I’ll be in touch with my son today to see how he’s doing.
Helpless, frightened, frustrated, angry. Dayton is on the Shooter City list, and now Santa Clarita joins us. What a horrible legacy.

Or perhaps people pointed out they thought something was wrong and they were ignored. A girl was knifed to death at my daughters high school because she said no to a request to go to prom. She had reported the person’s behavior to the guidance counselor months earlier but nothing was done. Thankfully he did not have a gun so she was the only one who died. And isn’t that a sad commentary on the current state of the world.

I’ve lived with this since 1966, the Texas Tower shooting, if all we’re counting are school shootings.
In 1979 when the 16 yo girl killed 2 adults and shot 8 kids and a cop, in San Diego. Ten years later, almost to the day was the Stockton school shooting, 5 dead at Cleveland Elementary in Stockton, 32 more wounded, almost all of the victims were from Southeast Asia. Considered the worst until Columbine.
I’m sure there were others I didn’t know about

No, srsly, the clipboard is actually where stuff you copy goes, (stored in computer memory), before pasting it where you want it to be. I’m sure that others will have a better definition.

@Kattails:
The “clipboard” is simply the place in memory where your computer saves text that you copy. What the others are suggesting is that when you have completed your comment you select all the text (Ctrl-A on a Windows machine, or use your mouse) and copy it (Ctrl-C, or right-click your mouse and select Copy from the context menu). The text will be saved until you copy something else (which would overwrite it). You can paste the saved text wherever you want (Ctrl-V, or right-click mouse again).
If you want a deeper explanation, Google “how to copy and paste.” Lots of articles and even videos.

Barb 2
Back when I was in High School (in northern California) we had tuck and duck drills, fire drills. The old days the fears of the golden days.
I was awake and had the radio on and heard about the ongoing active shooter in Southern CA. Kids have adapted – learning to run when they hear anything that could be a gun shot. Like one of the “ear witness”. He first thought it was a milk carton. And then edited his first impression to gun shot – get out of here.
But what a!ways concerns me is that as the trauma of active shooter the students need to face the line of armed and yelling cops. That is one of the memories that students have to deal with. I realise the cops have to clear and secure the buildings and catch the shooter. Cops armed with rifles and the need for protective armor turns cops into robo cops.
Sen. Harris was interviewed as the senator of California and former State Attorney General. She told the story of students telling her about the active shooter drills and how they don’t want to die. Harris asks if we need to wait for these kids to reach voting age to vote in Senators who will write logical gun laws. The majority of voters want a change but the GOP . . . . Payoffs, NRA (till in the blanks). I like Harris – speaking for the students. Do we really need more old males thinking that we need more candidates? More choices?
