Happy news from Atlanta. I know Pres. Carter says he’s ready, but I have to admit, I am not. Speedy recovery.

Still testing out the embed feature – this is ABCNews. Let me know in the comments if there are any issues. I’ve put it below the fold because I have to run out and if it’s autoplaying or something, I won’t be able to address it until I return.
Mid-morning open thread
ETA: Hey everyone it’s autoplaying for – is it autoplaying, or doing the short half-second preview loop? That’s what I’m getting. That’s not really autoplay, it’s just a dynamic preview.
Also, if it is fully autoplaying, tell us what you’re using to view it. Also, is the site running super slow for anyone else?
Thanks. Running out now…

FYI it’s autoplaying
geg6
It autoplayed on my work desktop running Firefox. Nicely, though, because it autoplayed with the sound off.
chris
@geg6: In case you don’t know, autoplay can be turned off in Firefox settings.

Hello from Helsinki.
Over the last months a backlog of pictures is collecting virtual dust on my hard drive.
I’m looking forward to the new site.
Yutsano
@otmar: You went to Helsinki? In November? Intentionally? :P
You’re definitely in one of the places I would love to go at some point. Then again so is Austria. I just need to go back to Europe period.
geg6
@chris:
Doesn’t bother me much, to be honest. I just turn it off if it does.
TomatoQueen
On the work machine (HP, Win10, IE, social media and web portals blocked) that’s a very nice, even, all-squared up black box. Looking forward to the contrast later in the day on the personal machine.
Major Major Major Major
Boy, that just does not feel promising…
chris
@geg6: I like being able to turn the volume down before I start a video. Some are SO LOUD!!!

Was it always like this? Or did it begin with Karl Rove’s dismissal of the “reality-based community” ??
Blatant lies, and the people who believe the lies are anxious to vote for president.
Jeffro
I’m so glad that we know vastly more about an ex-president’s health than the current one’s. Great job, snooze media.
Jeffro
@germy: trumpov, Bannon, and Manafort knew about the Wikileaks releases in advance…Wikileaks was disseminating information originally hacked by Russia in an attack on our country…
…I ask the American sheeple, why is this handful of dots so hard to connect?
The Dangerman
@germy:
OK, it’s fairly early on the West Coast, it coulda accidentally been devaf, but WTF is a Russia Truther?

I am glad that Jimmy Carter is recovering, although like everyone else I worry about him.
As for the ABC News video, all I see is a black rectangle.
lurker dean
autoplayed for me, too, on opera browser and win10.
i hope jimmy will make a full recovery, we need his goodness to counteract the shithead in the white house.

Hope Mr Carter begin constant use of a walker. It’s a pain in the ass, but better than the alternatives. I used one for a couple of days after my knee went south.
Nicole
The video auto played on my iPhone, but with the sound off. I pressed play but still had to unmute it for sound. All of that is fine with me, just letting you know.
Also that brief shot of President Carter kissing Mrs. Carter while they were building houses gave me all the feels.

@Amir Khalid:
not so much. He is 95. He has a had a great run. I would be more worried if George Washington were still alive. That would be scary…… those teeth.

@germy: No Collusion! No Collusion!
Apparently Trump lied in his written answers to Mueller. It’s all good.

Someone who believes that Russia didn’t interfere with our elections, and doesn’t own Donald Trump.

@J R in WV: if (when) I need a walker. I saw one with much higher than usual arm braces, that looks to reduce hunching over it.

@The Dangerman:
My guess is: Just as a 911 Truther is someone who believes it was a conspiracy by the U.S. Government or Bush, a Russia Truther is someone who believes a false conspiracy that Russia helped #45 win the election.

Autoplays sorta’ but not really. It’s just the preview thing not the whole shebang. No sound. I’m using Firefox on Windows 10 and it s up to date – whatever version that is. I have “blocked autoplay media with sound for this website” – so yay me, I guess.
Betty Cracker
It’s sad to face the prospect of losing an elder, especially a national treasure like President Carter. The world would have been a much better place if Carterism rather than Reaganism had taken root in the early 1980s. Carter may not have been the most effective president, but he was a good human being, and that matters, as our current political situation underscores, italicizes and renders in bold font.
My husband and I are at the age now when our family elders are showing their frailty, and that really sucks. We’ve each lost a parent, and I lost both grandmothers over the five or so years. As sad as that is, at least it’s not unexpected.
The universe threw a curve ball at our family late last month, and now we’re losing one of my husband’s brothers, a fantastically nice guy who’s in his mid-50s. Totally out of the blue, so we’re all feeling blindsided and trying to help his mom get through this horror show.

@Betty Cracker:
But he was hired to be an effective President. I would rather have an inhuman asshole who is effectively siding with me as president, than an ineffective nice guy. LBJ and domestic policy spring to mind. Carter would have been viewed as effective if the economy had not shrunk 5% in 1980.
With that, no chance.

Comment box completely vanishes, 2nd time. Still no functionality on the embedded vid.

@Betty Cracker: Hugs, Betty. My husband lost his only sibling to a super rare cancer 3 years ago at age 56, just months after their only remaining parent passed. The only good thing about it all was their dad never knew his son was terminal. Parents should never lose a child, no matter their age. Peace and strength to your family in the coming days.

Imani Gandy, aka Angry Black Lady, just had her dog attacked by a pit bull, for the second time in 3 years. I think there may be a way to help her with the bills, if you check her twitter feed.

As far as the video goes, on an old Kindle I just get a black box. However, starting last week I gif’s show a still image initially then go black while the screen box ticks off the seconds. I think it’s a bad kindle update since this happened once before. I can’t p!ay videos at all now.

OK, this noontide I’m running a Win 8 laptop, FFox 53, QuickJava with Flash set to ‘off’. Get picture of Pres Carter with arrow in middle. Click on arrow, get ‘black box’ and sound for 1:09 video playing
Hope that’s some help to you
Clouds and rain in New Jersey today, can’t tell noon from 8AM without clock, and they’re testing the fire and smoke alarms in this building today. Blech.

@J R in WV: My stepfather hates his walker. So he tried to get to the bathroom without it – and broke his hip. Fortunately it looks like he will recover but blech.
The Moar You Know
@Mike in DC: I raise for Guide Dogs, and every now and then one of our clients will have their dog attacked like this. The dog does not recover in a way that renders it still usable as a service animal, the losses on the resources put into raising that dog to be a successful guide alone are well north of 50k. I’d like to see owners of the attacking dog hit with the full costs of that, in the form of an absolutely non-dischargeable debt.
There are no bad dogs (really) but there are a shitload of bad owners and we really need to start hitting those folks with the costs of their failure to raise a well-behaved animal.

Weather change, that is, the Arctic blast enveloping most of the continent, is borne on an intermittent wind storm; gusting is playing merry hell with my network connection, which in turn makes mischief with various browser functions and features. All calm for the last five minutes, but that black box is a black box.

@Patricia Kayden: Well, at least he’s not in charge of immigration policy or the presidential speech writer or anything like that.
The full damage done by this administration will not be known until after they’ve been out of office for a while.

@Mandalay: I’ve always felt lucky that I served during his presidency almost exactly. Jan 77 – July 80. A period of, largely, peace for our country, at least in terms of armed combat.
Mac OS Mojave on Chrome 78, and it autoplayed [ETA: preview loop] with volume off (which is good because I’m at work).

Preview loop. Samsung A20 android system.

@Betty Cracker:
The bitter irony is that had Gerald Ford managed to win the squeaker election of 1976, it would likely have been a solidly progressive epoch rather than a reactionary conservative one that would have taken solid root after the election of 1980 – because the same forbiddingly difficult economic and geopolitical problems which sunk Carter’s chances of success would have unavoidably fallen on Ford’s head instead – and the popular will for change would have turned in the other direction with President Edward Kennedy (or some other progressive nominee) elected President in 1980, and some form of universal health care would have been enacted in the 1980s and SCOTUS would have had three far more progressive-friendly justices instead of O’Connor, Scalia and Kennedy.
I’m not dissing Jimmy Carter here – it’s just a bitter irony that his success in getting elected left him in office during a period of intractable stagflation economic distress that would have likely sunk whomever held the office in 1980, plus the Iran hostage crisis. And frankly, Jimmy Carter’s decision to not send a sufficiently redundant number of helicopters on the hostage rescue mission (in an ill-considered effort to make the optics appear like a rescue mission not a more aggressive military attack) – was what doomed the mission’s chances, sealing Carter’s fate in the 1980 election..

@Betty Cracker: Oh Betty, I’m so sorry to hear what the bad news is. I love my two brothers so very much and losing them is one of my worst fears. Brother the elder survived both testicular cancer and a kidney tumor luckily things that come in pairs. Brother the younger and I would be lost without our boss sibling.
I wish you and your husband strength and peace in the face of this impending loss.
Baud
@cmorenc:
I think you’re underestimating reactionary racism. Clinton and Obama both vastly improved the economy they inherited, and you know what that got us.

I am so sorry, Betty. Among all the other unfillable holes it creates, it leaves one wondering why.

@TaMara (HFG): Working perfectly, not autoplaying. Mac Air Safari. Thanks Tamara.

Tamara: the video embed just shows up as a black box for me – no video, no nothing, and nothing when I click on it. I am running Firefox 70.0.1 on MacOS 10.13.1.

Video does not autoplay on my chromebook with Autoplay Stopper. Plays when clicked. No sound even after I unmute the video and crank the volume all the way up on both the video control and my chromebook sound control.

@Betty Cracker: Hang in there. It’s hard – for a parent, losing a child (even a middle-aged one) is the most terrible thing.
Aleta
@Betty Cracker: Very sorry to hear you and your family are going through this.
My partner and I learned last month we’re about to lose one of his brothers, who’s been my heart brother too. It’s a hard hard thing we cannot accept yet cannot stop.
Barbara
@Betty Cracker: I am so sorry. My brother died last year at the age of 56, from metastatic brain cancer without the doctors ever identifying the organ of origination. It was apparently an unusual manifestation of cancer at the cellular level that is considered very stealthy. It was a shocking three weeks from diagnosis until death. Wishing you and your husband’s family comfort and solace.

Mine is the preview but all my comments are being eaten by moderation.

@Betty Cracker:
“For want of a screw…” I will go to my grave convinced that if the attempted rescue of the Iranian hostages had been successful, Carter would have won in a landslide and the entire course of human history over the last 39 years would have gone immeasurably better.
Citizen Alan
@cmorenc:
We can play what-if forever. If LBJ had picked a squeaky clean SCOTUS nominee instead of Abe Fortas (whose “crimes” by modern standards were laughably small), the Court would have remained liberal well into the 1980’s.

@Betty Cracker:

Death Panel Truck
In July 1979, Carter gave a televised speech (dubbed the Malaise speech by the media, although he did not use that word) in which he told Americans the truth about the country’s problems. He assumed Americans were adults who wanted to hear the truth and were willing to roll up their sleeves and help solve those problems.
He was wrong. Americans were (and by and large still are) petulant children who wanted a Big Daddy figure to pat them on the head and tell them everything was going to be okay.
That’s how we ended up with that bastard Ronald Reagan.
TomatoQueen
And on the personal machine (Lenovo laptop Win 7, Fireyfox) without sound to start there was the little preview, with sound the whole vid went, and then at the end shut itself the fuck off, which I consider half a win.
